The Toyota Land Cruiser is an institution of overlanding authority. It has been a global expedition vehicle since its launch in Japan in 1951 as the Toyota Jeep BJ, a small 4WD military vehicle. The name was changed by 1954 to Land Cruiser to avoid legal entanglements with the Willys brand and to tread lightly around the Land Rover.

The prototype BJ was not chosen for production, according to Toyota, but it went on to become the first motor vehicle to reach the sixth station on the trail to the top of Mt. Fuji.

In 1958, the updated 20-Series was one of the first Toyota exports to the United States. The next Land Cruiser iteration, the 40-Series (FJ-40), arrived in 1960 and became an all-terrain icon (and now a collector’s item). A larger station wagon model followed in the late-1960s, putting the Land Cruiser on a path toward family adventures.

By 1991, the 80-Series Land Cruiser was becoming a full premium model. A V-8 engine and an array of advanced chassis systems and luxury amenities were added in the late-1990s.

The current Land Cruiser, known internally as the 200-Series, is the most advanced and luxurious in the model’s history, Toyota says.

Land Cruiser Credentials

The Land Cruiser is not a station-wagon SUV. It is built expedition tough to get you out and back. Its protective armor includes full-time four-wheel drive, frame-mounted tow hooks front and rear and underbody skid plates (at the front suspension, radiator, fuel tank, transfer case).

After an all-new seventh-generation model debuted in 2008, the last major “refresh” was in 2016. That update would add a new front end (for Euro pedestrian crash standards), an eight-speed automatic transmission and a full suite of advanced safety technologies, such as low-speed frontal collision avoidance, lane departure alert and dynamic radar cruise control.

Land Cruiser Heritage Edition

To honor the Land Cruiser’s 60-plus years as an SUV icon, Toyota created the 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition. The limited-edition model has a starting price of $89,070 and is only available in a five-seat, two-row configuration to maximize cargo space. (Its MSRP is about $2,330 more than the standard eight-seat Land Cruiser). Pricing includes the $1,325 freight charge from Toyota City, Japan. The tester was $89,369 with one option for a glass-breakage sensor, $299.

It is available in two paint colors, Midnight Black Metallic or Blizzard Pearl, both with a black-accented grille and bronze-colored BBS 18-inch forged aluminum wheels featuring a “TOYOTA” center cap. The vintage-style Land Cruiser badge is a tribute to its accomplished history.

With its mission of off-roading, the Heritage Edition has no running boards to interfere with high-centering and the usual chrome lower bodyside moldings were deleted to avoid trail rash. Other unique features include darkened headlight housings, fog lights with dark chrome surrounds, and side mirrors with darkened chrome.

Land Cruiser Safety Features

All Land Cruiser models come standard with 10 air bags and Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), which uses radar and a camera sensor to detect a preceding pedestrian or a vehicle. The system is intended to automatically apply the brakes as needed to help mitigate or avoid collisions in certain conditions.

Integrated into the TSS-P system are Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Automatic High Beams. Also standard are blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Toyota Safety Connect (with three years of free subscription service) uses onboard cellular technology, independent of the driver’s phone, to provide such services as Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS) and GPS-enhanced roadside assistance.

Off-roading armor includes a multiterrain camera with front, side or rear views, a full-size spare tire, roof rack, frame-mounted tow hooks front and rear with underbody skid plates at the front suspension, radiator, fuel tank and transfer case.

Ride and Handling

With its body-on-frame truck chassis, the Cruiser feels as tough as a railroad spike. But the ride quality is quite composed on all road surfaces I tested and without head toss in turns.

Its hydraulic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension works through the stabilizer bars to steady the on-road ride or to reduce resistance for more wheel travel off road to keep the rubber in contact with the trail. (It is not an air suspension and there is no ability to change the ride height, whether for loading people or cargo or raising it for off-road clearance.)

The full-time 4WD system has high- and low-range gearing and a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential. Active Traction Control works the brake and throttle to help control wheel spin. And the electronic multiterrain select system will fine-tune throttle and traction for a variety of surfaces, including a mogul mode.

Crawl Control takes over the accelerator and braking to wallow along at one of five low-speed settings (1 to 5 mph). It even works in reverse.

Endearing features include a manual hand brake and the power liftgate and manual fold-down tailgate (with storage panels) and a soft-close feature.

With a curb weight of 5,715 pounds, there is good power from the 381-horsepower 5.7-liter V-8 and a trail churning 401 foot-pounds of torque for forceful but not quick acceleration. The eight-speed automatic doles out easy shifts to stay in the powerband.

Fuel-economy ratings are 13 mpg city, 17 highway and 14 mpg combined on 87 octane. I was averaging a consistent 15.7 mpg, with much highway driving. The 24.6-gallon tank allows a decent cruising range.

Interior Function

The upright cabin, one of Toyota’s highest-quality interiors, is a vertical environment with a short dashboard, which simplifies sightlines over the hood. It is a traffic-calmed space that leaves the commotion outside and you comfortably seated with a clear view down the road. It is an empowering message that not all SUVs provide. My only gripe was sun glare on the touch screen.

The Heritage Edition interior is luxurious but durable. The cabin is outfitted with black leather-trimmed upholstery and bronze contrast stitching, which is carried onto the steering wheel, door trim, center stack, console and seats. With standard all-weather floor mats and cargo liner, it’s ready for the trail, or the commute to work.

Other Heritage Edition equipment includes heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power moonroof, four-zone automatic climate control with 28 air vents throughout the cabin, and smart-key locking with push-button start. For deeper center console storage, the cool box has been deleted.

The 9-inch touch screen infotainment system has split-screen capability, advanced voice recognition and a 14-speaker JBL audio system with navigation and Bluetooth phone and music. There’s also Qi wireless phone charging.

The second row has a flat floor and adult-class support to the seats, which also recline.

Window seat occupants have overhead and pillar-mounted grab handles. The HVAC system includes a pollen and dust filter.

Why Buy the Toyota Land Cruiser?

Big and heavy off-roading SUVs are getting more scrutiny by manufacturers seeking improved fuel economy and emissions for greenhouse-gas ratings.

The Land Cruiser typically sells fewer than 350 models a year, but the Toyota dealers want to keep it, or at least the nameplate. As of now, the Land Cruiser is slated for a redesign in 2023, which might bring a fresh new concept. Toyota isn’t saying which direction it might take, but a return to its more compact FJ roots would introduce fresh new competition for Jeep and the new Ford Bronco.

You will like the Land Cruiser if you are seeking a vehicle that feels vault-secure and safe. For those not sensitive to pricing and fuel costs, the Land Cruiser provides a feeling of calm invincibility on the road.

FFord Motor Co. just added a trunkload of archived PR car images to its heritage vault, including nearly 380 concept vehicles. The Ford Heritage Vault now has more than 1,844 concept car images from 1896 to 2021. The site also includes brochures and news releases.

I made a run through the site and had to stop and read more about the 1956 Mercury XM-Turnpike Cruiser and its Van-O-Rama.

The nameplate, “Turnpike Cruiser,” is the enthusiast’s siren song for a road trip, at least it was for me as a kid seeing the big Merc Turnpike Cruiser.

The 1957 production version of the Cruiser was tamed down from the concept, which had such features as:

  • Twin jet pods in chrome nacelles on both sides of the lower front bumper;
  • New delayed-action headlights remain on 30 to 40 seconds after being switched off; they are also a driving and fog light combination;
  • Butterly top panels are built into the roof above each front door. The “butterfly top” opens when the door opens, facilitating passenger entry and exit.

The Van-O-Rama

Here is the news release for the 1956 Turnpike Cruiser, which Ford called “the experimental car that anticipates future motoring needs.”

“The first glass-sided, full-length trailer ever built will leave Cleveland Monday (January 30) on a 900-mile run to Omaha carrying Mercury Division’s XM-Turnpike Cruiser on a coast-to-coast tour.

“The Turnpike Cruiser is the first vehicle designed, according to Mercury’s forward-thinking stylists and engineers, to provide maximum visibility and driving ease for motorists traveling the nation’s new turnpike system.

“The special Van-O-Rama carrying the Turnpike Cruiser has picture windows on either side, which measure 20 feet by 6 feet 6 inches high. Drawn by a Ford C-700 truck, the special van was built by Fruehauf Trailer Company.

Self-Contained Unit

“In addition to transporting the Turnpike Cruiser, the van also serves as a self-contained unit to display the car. Both sides can be lowered and the Cruiser turned cross-wise in the van by the turntable. Aluminum walkways and railings are installed on either side of the car, and visitors can walk past and inspect the model.

“F.C. Reith, general manager of the Mercury Division and vice president of Ford Motor Company, said that the XM-Turnpike Cruiser will be brought to many sections of the nation which never before have seen an advanced model car.

Two red plastic turn-signal indicators are recessed below the roofline on each rear corner. It could have been considered an early use of the high-mounted stoplight.

“While equipped to hook into regular 110-volt AC current, the van also carried a self-contained power-driver 10 kW generator for operating the 110-volt electrical components, including lights, public address system, recording devices, turntable, spot, and flood lights. A hot-air defrosting system with four fans keeps the windows free from fogging.

“The Turnpike Cruiser is loaded on the van through rear doors by means of sectional loading ramps. The trailer unit is 35 feet long, and the overall length of the tractor and trailer is 45 feet. Its height, including the plastic domes, is 11 feet 6 inches, and its width is 12 feet.”

The fourth-generation 2020 Toyota Highlander is a revitalized expression of family care, wrapped in an armor of advanced safety systems. The redesigned midsize SUV — now built on the Toyota New Global Architecture — represents hundreds of thousands of Highlanders that have been sold since its 2001 debut in the U.S.

It is currently Toyota’s second-best-selling SUV. It follows the compact-class RAV4 but is ahead of the 4Runner, subcompact C-HR, Sequoia and Land Cruiser.

The driver area is smartly arranged with eyes-on-the-road ergonomics.

Exterior design

Much care went into redesigning the 2020 Toyota Highlander. It is an all-new construction, except for the carryover V-6 engine. The “bold and chiseled” design language is evolutionary but with substantial presence. It is defined by an aggressive face, boomerang angles and character bulges.

The new model is about the same size as before but 2.36 inches longer. The length went to the cargo area, which was requested by owners. The expanded capacity is also more competitive with other three-row SUV crossovers, such as the Kia Telluride. The second row now slides an extra 1.2 inches farther to give more legroom to the third row or to stretch cargo space.

But the Highlander’s more premium presentation inside will be most appreciated to the loyalists.

Pricing

Highlander is again available in gasoline or gasoline-electric hybrid models in front or all-wheel drive. Three rows of seating can be configured for seven or eight. Second-row captain’s chairs or a three-position bench are no-cost options.

Sold in five trim levels, including the new base L, starting prices range from $35,720 with front-drive to $49,920 AWD. Pricing includes the $1,120 freight charge from Princeton, Ind.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is just $1,400 more than the gas version (depending on the model). The Hybrid is sold in four trim levels of front- or AWD with starting prices of $39,745-$51,745.

All trim levels are socially connected with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon’s Alexa, Waze (driving directions), satellite radio and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Today’s tester is a Platinum AWD with second-row captain’s chairs that was $51,112 with three options: the new Moon Dust (ice blue) metallic paint ($415), carpeted floor mats and cargo mat ($318) and roof rack crossbars ($350) and universal table holder ($99).

Powertrains

Gasoline Highlanders use a 295-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 with eight-speed automatic transmission.

The hybrid model is powered by a 2.5-liter direct-injection Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder. It has a total power rating of 243-hp combined with the electric motors and engine. Peak torque is 175 foot-pounds at 4,400 rpm.

The Platinum will be the empty-nesters’ escape with its elevated luxury treatment in presence and technologies. It is a best-of collection with the new 12.3-inch touch-screen infotainment display (8-inches on the other models), a 1,200-watt, 11-speaker JBL sound system and laminated front side window glass for soundproofing. The leather upholstery, perforated and neatly stitched, appears to be sourced from Lexus (Toyota’s luxury brand).

While $51,000 is not unreasonable for what Toyota delivers, the midrange XLE is $10K less. With one package for premium audio, $1,400 and carpeted floor mats, the MSRP would be $42,078 and the hybrid equivalent would be $45,078.

Unfortunately, the front passenger has just four-way power adjustment, leaving some occupants feeling low in the hole.

2021 XSE model

And later this year Toyota will debut the sportier XSE. It injects some life into the drive with higher-rate springs and a rear stabilizer bar, and the shock absorbers and electric power steering have been tuned for quicker response.

The front fascia, grille and lower spoiler are exclusive to the XSE to give it a more aggressive stance. The headlamps have black accents and light-strip DRLs. And inside, are black Softex (synthetic leather) seats with fabric inserts, but a two-tone red and black leather-trimmed interior with red-stitched instrument panel is optional.

Safety features

All models now include Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 system with:

•Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection;
•Full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise control;
•Lane-departure alert with steering assist;
•Automatic high beam control;
•Lane-tracing assist;
•Road sign assist and cyclist detection.

Other standard safety features include eight air bags, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, hill-start assist and downhill assist.

Performance

I appreciated the V-6 in the 4,450-pound Platinum, but its peak pulling power (torque) of 263 foot-pounds is high in the power band at 4,700 rpm. Its force will be out of reach to most drivers on the daily commute. The eight-speed automatic is dutiful in performance, but Sport mode sharpens the response time. The power is measured but it’s there when needed.

Fuel economy is the bigger benefactor.  The AWD model has mileage ratings of 20/27/23 mpg or just a tick better with front-drive at 21/29/24, on the recommended 87 octane. My best was 23.4 mpg combined city/highway.

The hybrid has impressive mileage ratings of 36/35/36 mpg for front-drive or 35/35/35 mpg with AWD. The range dips to 35/34/35 for the heavier Limited and Platinum models, also on 87 octane. I have not tested the hybrid, but performance through the eCVT (continuously variable) transmission should have the benefit of more immediate thrust from the electric motor.

Ride and handling

The Highlander drives more as a car than an SUV crossover. Its comfortable step-in height has no obstruction from sporty seat bolsters. Driver sightlines are unobstructed and the turning circle is a parking savior at 37.4 feet, the same as the base-model Camry.

Power-assisted four-wheel discs brakes are ready for towing with 13.3-inch vented rotors front and solid 13.3-inch rotors rear.

Captain’s chairs or a second-row bench are no-cost options. 

It is a comfortable ride, tuned for mainstream-America comfort, capably blunting the impact of potholes and busted pavement. When pushed hard, it responds as a big, comfy sedan.

The enhanced soundproofing (with the Platinum’s laminated front and side glass) creates a quiet cabin. The 20-inch Bridgestone Alenza all-season tires have a tall sidewall for a cushioned ride quality and protection from curb rash to the wheels when parking. The Alenza’s were quieter on the highway than I anticipated for a somewhat hard tire with a 65,000-mile warranty and a 500 treadwear rating.

Driver-assist system

Dynamic radar cruise control with driver-assist steering and braking technologies does a good job of centering the vehicle in the lane. But it let the Highlander drift over the white lines or Botts dots and then gave me a warning for the transgression.

These systems seem to be easily confused with varying light and road-surface conditions. Always use these driver-assist systems with both hands on the wheel.

Interior

This is a big cabin with elbow and shoulder room. There is plenty of space to ergonomically place screens, switches and areas for small-item storage.

The driver area is smartly arranged for multitasking. The Platinum’s 12.3-inch-wide infotainment screen is a billboard of information but not prone to glare. The big screen has two to three panels for such information as car settings, music or navigation. And there are knobs for audio volume and tuning. There also is a tier of switches for temperature, fan speed, vents and seat heaters.

The shift console packages an e-bin with two 2.1-amp charging USBs. A tray above in the dashboard face is wide enough to lay a phone and the tray includes a small cutout to route a charging cable. For newer phones, the wireless charging pad is in the center armrest console. The three-level armrest box is deep with a removable second-level tray.

2nd- and 3rd-row features

The back seat in the Highlander has a flat floor with a center floor console with cup holders. It integrates controls for temperature, fan speed and seat heaters. There also are two 2.1-amp USBs and a 12-volt household plug, but it is light duty at 100 watts.

The raised second-row benefits from manual sunshades. The chairs will tip and slide for third-row access or the seatbacks will fold flat for cargo.

The added length translates to 2.36 cubic feet more space behind the third row.

The waaay back three-seat bench is best for children. Legroom is tight at 27.7 inches. There are dual cup holders, but no ports or plugs for device charging. The 60/40 split seatbacks (with three head restraints) have several inches of recline.

The longer body translates to 2.36 cubic feet more space behind the third row, now at 16 cu. ft. Fold the third row for 48.4 cu. ft. of flat and square space that is 3 ½-feet deep. Drop both rows for up to 7 feet of length.

Why buy the Toyota Highlander

There are at least 10 other three-row SUV crossovers in the segment this year. Toyota was careful to craft its new Highlander for quality and nimble stability. 

Some SUVs will feel stiff and clumsy in the name of “sporty,” but the Highlander is built for comfort and long-term ownership.

The Toyota 4Runner is a stalwart SUV for the ages — literally. It has been 15 years since there was a full redesign of the 4Runner. Though it has worn well, 15 years is a lifetime in this age of redesigns every four to six years. Yet, the 4Runner’s lifespan is not so unusual for Toyota. This carmaker is known to build it right the first time so that it can ride for years, with timely updates.

Now in its sixth generation, the 4Runner is a throwback to the early days when SUVs took a rib from pickup trucks. And the completely reworked 2025 4Runner is reborn as a rugged ladder-frame SUV based largely on the Tacoma pickup.

Toyota used this redesign to push 4Runner farther into luxury and more extreme off-roading, with a new Trailhunter for “overlanding.” Like “Platinum” levels of pickups, the 4Runner Platinum ($64,310) is at home in the backcountry or the country club.

Overlanding to more remote destinations became popular as an escape clause from restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As before, the 4Runner is available in rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, and full-time 4WD.

The 2025 4Runner went on sale Jan. 28, 2025, but all nine of the trim-level choices might be in short supply. Starting prices range from $41,000 to $70,000, including the $1,450 freight charge from Tahara, Japan. Many options are available to push the price, including quality accessories for camping and travel with pets.

Passion for the Nameplate

The 2025 4Runner shows how far it has evolved since the first 4Runner debuted in 1984. It was built from the Toyota Hilux pickup and was a simple two-door compact with a fiberglass shell over the bed.

Since its U.S. debut, 3 million 4Runners have been sold. It is a beloved nameplate, ranking with the Ford Mustang, VW Beetle, Nissan Z, and even the old Toyota Land Cruiser. The new 4Runner competes with competent competitors such as the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

As with any product that has succeeded for 40 years, it seems everybody has a 4Runner story. I spoke with an automotive industry professional, now with a major EV charging network, who owns a 23-year-old 4Runner. He said he loves it “so much I’ll be buried in it.”

4Runner’s last full redesign was in 2009 as a 2010 model year, but Toyota continued to make timely updates.

The 2014 model received a facelift with interior improvements. The TRD Pro trim was added, and in 2017, it was renamed TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. In between, Toyota added more safety and advanced digital technologies and more choices for bigger wheels, audio systems, and paint colors.

2025 4Runner Media Drive

Toyota was in San Diego in late January for a North American media drive of the 2025 4Runner. Journalists could have seat time in several of the nine trim levels, including a base SR5 to the new Platinum and Trailhunter. There was on-road driving and off-roading on the dirt tracks of Vogt Ranch, about 40 miles east of San Diego.

For fans of 4Runner, yes, the 2025 4Runner is good, but like many 40-year-olds, it is now bigger and heavier. Its exterior styling looks about the same as the 2024 4Runner but with more distinctions between trim levels.

Toyota’s extensive Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all trims. Active safety and advanced driving technologies now include Proactive Driving Assist.

Of interest to past and current 4Runner owners is fuel economy. Yes, the turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines get slightly better mileage than the previous V-6.

Journalists were able to have generous seat time, yet the vehicles were “preproduction.” That means they were very close to being production level, but there might be some variations in content or features.

My story is not a review but an overview of various trim levels of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner. I hope to have a test week at home soon with any of the trim levels. I was impressed by the base SR5 as the most affordable model with its voluminous cargo capacity. Details are below.

Is Bigger Better?

The new 4Runner feels robust and stable on the road or trail. It is built on a wheelbase that is 2.4 inches longer with a body almost 4 inches longer. The body is also 2.1 inches wider and taller by 1.1 inches, without a roof rack.

Curb weights are also up, ranging from 4,455 pounds for the rear-wheel-drive SR5 to 5,500 pounds for the Trailhunter. That poundage is 50 to 695 pounds heavier than the 2024 model.

Other thumbnail stats include:

  • Towing capacity is now up to 6,000 pounds, a thousand more than before.
  • Gone is the 4.0-liter V-6 engine, replaced by a choice of two i-Force turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains, one of which is a gasoline-electric hybrid.
  • Gone is the five-speed automatic transmission, replaced by a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.
  • Gone is the tidy 37.4-foot turning circle, replaced by a span 2 feet wider.
  • Gone is the 23-gallon fuel tank, now four gallons smaller.
  • Gone are the standard 17-inch wheels, updated to 18-inch or optional 20-inch alloy wheels.
  • Off-road ground clearance is less and more for 2025. The 2024 4Runner has ground clearances of 9 or 9.6 inches, 2WD to 4WD. The new 4Runner has ground clearances of 8.1 2WD to 10.1 inches for the more extreme off-roading models, including a 1-inch lift.

4Runner Powertrains and Fuel Economy

Two turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines are new for the 2025 4Runner. Both have Toyota’s D-4ST direct fuel injection and double overhead camshafts.

  • Entry T24A-FTS i-Force engine has 278 horsepower and peak torque of 317 foot-pounds at 1,700 rpm. Fuel economy estimates for rear-wheel-drive models are 20/26/22 mpg city/highway/combined, but the 4Runner Limited drops to 24 mpg highway. Four-wheel drive mileage ratings are 19/25/21 mpg.
  • 2.4-liter i-Force Max hybrid engine produces 326 hp and peak torque of 465 lb.-ft., also at 1,700 rpm. With standard part-time 4WD, the i-Force Max has fuel economy ratings of 24/23/23 mpg. The hybrid engine is standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum trims and optional for the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited.

Both engines run on 87-octane fuel.

5 Favorite 4Runner Features

Side LED lantern or multitool. The nifty palm-size flashlight, a $160 accessory, has several lighting modes, including a red warning light. It clicks into the end of the driver-side instrument panel and is accessible only when the door is open. Alternatively, you can opt for the Side Storage Multi-Tool, $50, which fits in the same round cutout as the lantern.

Mult-Terrain View Monitor. An indispensable asset when trail driving. The 14-inch panoramic camera monitor is the driver’s “spotter,” showing video moving forward, the front tires, rear, and underside. With cameras aimed at both front tires, it is reassuring information to avoid jagged rocks.

Power rear tailgate window. Back by popular demand, the power rear tailgate gives quick access to the cargo area with exterior window switches.

Locking rear differential. Off-roaders should not head to the trails without this piece of technology.

Disconnecting front stabilizer bar. This useful tech helps increase the range of motion to keep traction to the tire. It is standard on TRD Pro and Trailhunter. When will this trick move down the line as an option?

5 Observations and Considerations

4Runner vs. Land Cruiser. It doesn’t seem very clear to offer a 4Runner when Toyota also positions its Land Cruiser as a superior overlanding vehicle. Both are built on the same TNGA-F global body-on-frame architecture. Both use the same hybrid powertrain, and both have full-time 4WD. And both cost around $70,000 with some desirable options and accessories.

Cargo complications. 4Runner cargo space for the gas model is a huge 44.8 cubic feet. However, cargo space in the hybrid models loses 7.6 cu.ft., compromised by the placement of the battery beneath the floor. The battery-tray packaging protrudes about 6 inches above the floor, causing a high load floor. (And that is why the hybrid has no third-row option.)

Tumble-forward back seats. Though a well-engineered design, the folded seats do not provide a contiguous flat space that overlanders could use for sleeping.

Turning circle. The off-roading mantra of tread lightly gets complicated with the 4Runner’s turning circle, which is almost 40 feet with 20-inch tires. The larger 4Runner’s front and rear tread tracks are 65.6 inches from wheel to wheel, which is 3.2 inches wider than before.

Limited and Platinum trims have full-time 4WD, an electronic locking center differential, and an adaptive variable suspension.

Which 2025 Toyota 4Runner to Buy?

I spent thousands of dollars and hours updating a heavy-duty 1987 Suburban to become an overlanding rig. In the long run, buying a new, fully equipped off-roader might be less expensive.

My choice today is the TRD Off-Road Premium in Everest green paint. The base engine seems to have plenty of power on the road or off, and I can live with the fuel economy estimates. Plus, I would rather have the bigger and more functional cargo area.

I’d also add all-weather floor liners ($248), a carpeted cargo mat ($130), and a cargo cover ($135). I would consider the rock rails for $990, the side-LED lantern for $160, and the Sirius satellite radio for $350 with 33 months prepaid.

All in, my TRD Off-Road Premium would cost $56,933, about what I spent buying and upfitting my Suburban over 10 years.

The re-engineered, redesigned, and just-about-new-everything 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a formidable overachiever — luxury in a gloved fist. The new GX outdistances the previous Lexus GX in most categories, but without the V-8 engine so loved by owners.

The 2024 GX 550 is a larger SUV now with twin-turbo-V6 power and a tow rating of 9,000 pounds, or 2,500 pounds more than its predecessor. All models have full-time four-wheel drive, a limited-slip center locking differential, and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Now that Lexus dealers have the three-row, family-class TX model, Lexus could expand and enhance the GX 550 line. New for 2024 are two new Overtrail models fit for “overlanding” amid Lexus luxury.

Luxury off-roading SUVs are an oxymoron, but Lexus must see some sales-poaching opportunities. About the only GX Overtrail competition is the Land Rover Defender, an icon of mountain-goat ability with kid-glove resolve. However, the 2024 GX Overtrails have the pricing advantage, costing $70,000 to $80,000 well-equipped.

Whether for street or trail, the 2024 Lexus GX is tough looking, but the interior is calming, lux, and modern, Lexus says. There are six trim levels of pricing, four of which emphasize luxury, with seating for five, six, or seven. The Overtrail exclusively has five seats for its cargo-camping capacity.

Lexus says the GX marketing plan for the Overtrail models was to provide refined outdoor experiences. To support those experiences, Lexus created the Overtrail Project. Details are below.

It is not simple to design a husky SUV that offers luxury and off-roading dominance without compromises. As thoroughly conceived as this new GX is, there are a few missed opportunities.

A Pre-Production Note

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ test vehicle was a pre-production model. Lexus says it is representative of a final production model. Or, as manufacturers will say, “If you like it, it’s production. If you don’t like it, it’s pre-production.”

The tester had accumulated 6,300 miles, which indicates it had extensive journalist evaluations. All the elements of the test vehicle looked to be at the production level. The interior assembly had precise fit and appealing finishes. All exterior body panels were well-aligned and secure.

In The Beginning

The first-generation GX entered the North American market in 2002. It would become a successful off-road racer in demanding events like the Baja 500.

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a completely new vehicle built on Toyota’s GA-F platform. It underpins body-on-frame Lexus and Toyota vehicles, including the Lexus LX 600, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Tacoma and Tundra pickups.

Comparing 2024 with 2023 GX

I tested the top-line 2024 GX 550 Overtrail+. It is not built on a namby-pamby unibody frame but a lightweight ladder frame. The truck-style frame increases body rigidity, crucial to withstand twisting off-road forces. The suspension capably manages the Overtrail+ curb weight of 5,675-5,705 pounds (depending on options) and its tow rating of 9,063 pounds.

With toughness comes size. Compared to the previous Lexus GX, the 2024 model has a wheelbase 2.4 inches longer, now at 112.2 inches. The GX body is 3.8 inches wider, now at 78 inches or 78.4 with the Overtrail’s fender overriders. Body length is almost 5 inches longer, at 197.05 inches. The GX stands taller by 1.39 inches, or almost 2 inches taller for Overtrail models. The wheel track is wider, too, by almost 3 1/4 inches, benefiting a secure driving stance.

Inside, there is more head and legroom throughout. Front shoulder room grew by 4 inches.

While the Lexus GX and Toyota Land Cruiser are platform partners, there are decisive separators. The Toyota is available only with a 326-hp, 2.4-liter i-Force Max hybrid four-cylinder engine. The powertrain has 465 foot-pounds of torque at a low 1,700 rpm, full-time four-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Land Cruiser went on sale Aug. 1, 2024. Available in three trim levels, starting prices range from $56,000 to $75,000 for the First Edition model.

2024 Lexus GX 550 Pricing

GX shoppers can choose from six trim levels: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and the new Overtrail and Overtrail+. Starting retail prices range from $64,250 to $77,250 for today’s review of the top-line GX 550 Overtrail+.

Suggested manufacturer starting prices include the $1,350 freight charge from the Tahara plant in Japan. The GX is built there with the Land Cruiser Prado and Toyota 4Runner.

With a few options, the test GX 550 Overtrail+ was an $81,000 commitment to exploring the outdoors. Standard features above the GX 550 Overtrail ($69,250) include:

Safety Features and Technologies

Among the standard GX 550 safety features, with 10 air bags, is the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. Its advanced technologies include:

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection — PCS. Using a camera and millimeter-wave radar, the pre-collision system can help detect and alert to a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist. If the driver does not react, the system can use automatic emergency braking between 7 and 110 mph.

Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist. Emergency maneuvers get an additional steering boost to prevent lane departure between 25-50 mph.

Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking. If turning left in front of an oncoming vehicle, the system will issue a warning alert followed by automatic braking. This feature is functional only during daylight hours.

Emergency Driving Stop System — EDSS. If the system detects no driver input for some time, audible warnings will alert the driver. If the driver does not respond, the system will slow the vehicle to a stop, keeping it safely in the lane. EDSS only operates when driving on expressways with DRCC and LTA activated.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist — LDA w/SA. Functional above 32 mph, LDA w/SA will issue audible and visual alerts if an inadvertent lane departure is detected. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system will initiate gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance.

Proactive Driving Assist — PDA. Using the vehicle’s camera and radar, PDA monitors distance control between a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. The system will engage gentle braking and steering into curves as needed.

GX Overtrail Interior Function

The GX front seats are in command position, comfortable for hours. In the Overtrail+, the driver gets the added benefit of an eight-way power seat with an extendable cushion. However, the front passenger seat has only six-way power, and the cushion is not long enough for leggy occupants. For $80,000, the front passenger should be treated better.

The upright windshield and side mirrors offset from the body provide wide-open views. Access to all controls is finger-reach simple, with a functional presentation of digital and manual controls.

The GX has an expansive hood, but its size is minimized by the two slightly raised channels over the fenders and tires. The lower flat plain between the fender channels benefits improved visibility. When off-roading, the raised channels help the driver see where the tires are and where to place them.

The wide center infotainment screen is not prone to glare and is equally visible to both front passengers.

Headroom with the Overtrail’s standard moonroof is 39.4 inches. Delete the moonroof, and head space gains a couple of inches to 41.7 inches. The moonroof is irrelevant for Overlanders who travel with a loaded roof rack, allowing the $1,100-delete to be applied elsewhere.

Back Seats and Cargo Space

Step-in access to the back seat is a little tight and narrow. If the doors opened wider, it would facilitate child-seat access and gear loading. Legroom is good at a max 36.7 inches if tall people are not sitting up front.

The manual lever for the fold-and-tumble back seats could use some refinement for ease of use.

GX cargo space is big and square, 45 inches wide at the tailgate opening. Boxy gear is easily loaded and secured with 36 inches from floor to headliner.

Fold the 60/40 back seat for 5 feet in length. However, the expanded cargo space is not a contiguous flat space, such as for sleeping. There is about a 3-inch dip in the floor under the back seats. Some type of filler pad will be needed to fill the void for comfortable sleeping.

A tonneau cover is $110? For an $80,000 specialized luxury off-roading SUV, a tonneau cover should be standard equipment. The roller cover keeps eyes off the cargo contents, whether at the mall or on the trail.

Powertrain and Performance

For 2024 in the U.S., the standard powertrain in the GX is a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed direct-shift automatic Transmission.

Lexus says the 349-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 outperforms the previous generation V-8, with 301-hp Torque output—towing grunt—also rising to a substantial 479 lb.-ft. from 2,000-3,600 rpm. Compare that to the previous GX 460, with 329 lb.-ft. at 3,500 rpm.

Performance around town can be strong in Normal and Sport modes. Eco mode is too hand-wringing cautious for me.

Fuel economy ratings are essentially the same as before: 15 mpg city, 21 highway, and 17 mpg combined, a 1 mpg highway boost. As before, maximum power requires premium fuel.

When the GX tester was delivered to my San Diego home, the average mileage rating was 15.1 mpg. That was after the 100-mile drive from Orange County, near Long Beach. The mileage did not get much better. During my test week, I took two 80-mile roundtrips and a shorter highway drive of around 75 miles. With that much highway driving, using Eco or Normal modes, the average mpg rose just to 15.5 mpg.

With my average mpg, the 21.4-gallon fuel tank in GX 550 would provide a driving range of around 330 miles. The Land Rover Defender has a 23.8-gallon tank — and every dollar and gallon matters when heading to the backcountry.

Lexus says a GX hybrid powertrain will be available in the U.S. at a later date but gives no details. Could it be the engine in the 2024 Land Cruiser?

GX towing capacity is much improved for 2024, now up to 8,000 pounds for Premium and Premium+ models. Overtrail models have tow ratings up to 9,096 pounds, with a standard tow hitch. The previous GX had a tow rating of 6,500 pounds.

Ride and Handling

It is big and blunt, but the GX 550 delivers a remarkably comfortable and soundproofed ride. The cabin is so well soundproofed that highway tire noise is minimal from the 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires. A full-size spare cranks down from under the cargo area.

One of the overachieving skills of the GX 550 Overtrail models is the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. E-KDSS is an elaborate hydraulic system that adjusts front and rear stabilizers for consistent control. The setup of two two-way hydraulic cylinders keeps fluid moving front to rear. Sensors in the electronic circuit respond to the side-to-side and ups and downs of trail driving, and lumpy city streets. The stabilizer bars unlock for long wheel travel when off-roading. When one cylinder reacts by compressing, the other cylinder releases. Greater wheel travel increases traction by keeping the tire in contact with the trail, ruts, or sand runs. When driving on-road, the hydraulic cylinders keep the stabilizer bars fixed, allowing the bars to twist as normal to tame body roll.

Once a system used on Toyota off-road vehicles, E-KDSS is now an exclusive Lexus technology.

Lexus also says the GX adopts electronic power steering, adding increased steering feel on and off-road. The steering weight is light and responsive to small inputs. When off-road, its steering finesse is an asset when navigating a rutted or narrow track when inches matter.

However, a wide turning circle of 42 feet is a liability on a trail or at the mall. Sure, there is enough locking-differential traction to make a five-point turn on a trail, but at what cost to dragging along the greenery? Four-wheel steering would chop the turning circle by a few feet and make everybody happy at Tread Lightly.

GX as Off-Road Chaperone

With all of the electronic driver-assistance technologies, novice Overtrail riders have a nurturing guide. However, an experienced trail-driving friend would be helpful to point out what not to do.

A Torsen limited-slip locking center differential is standard on all GX models to harness the traction capabilities. The locking diff is necessary for traction in low grip situations, splitting engine power 50:50 front for a steady pull.

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ add an electronic locking rear differential engaged by a console-mounted switch. Locking the differential splits the power evenly between the left and right rear wheels to help the wheels turn at the same speed.

Other Overtrail assets include:

Crawl Control. This electronic low-range traction system operates in five driver-selected speeds, forward or reverse.

Downhill Assist Control. The semi-automated system works with the braking system to control slippage and prevent the brakes from locking. This assistance helps drivers focus on steering and scanning ahead for hazards without applying the brakes or downshift.

Hill-Start Assist Control. HAC prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped on an incline, whether off-road or on the street. Sensors detect when the vehicle is on a hill and automatically apply the brakes for about two seconds.

Multi-Terrain Assist. The electonic transfer case’s traction control system can switch between high range (H4) and low range (L4). L4 has four modes: Auto, Sand, Mud, and Rock. H4 has five modes: Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow.

Multi-Terrain Monitor. Four cameras transpose images underfloor, front, side, and rearview, displayed on the panoramic view monitor. The underview is especially useful when off-roading.

Observations and Considerations

Four-wheel steering. With a 42-foot turning circle, the GX 550 Overtrail+ has the grunt and traction to make five-point turnarounds on a woods trail. But at what cost to trampling the greenery? An option for four-wheel steering would be worth the price. And it would provide a better in-town parking experience.

More stash space! Off-roaders bring a lot of stuff into the vehicle’s cab. There are maps, guidebooks, gloves, a tire gauge, binoculars, and plenty of snacks. However, small-item storage is lacking in the GX 550. The door panel slots are narrow, and the center transmission console is huge and broad but has barely any space except for cup holders. There is an unnecessarily elaborate, covered slot for the 12-volt plug, which takes up valuable space. The optional Cool Box ($170) in the armrest console is smallish, with space for four small beverage bottles and a few energy bars. Cooled by AC, the insulated box is inadequate as a cooler or storage space.

Running boards fail. The GX has standard step-aboard rails that complicate ease of entry and exit. The running boards are positioned rearward and are not particularly helpful when loading the roof rail. The boards also restrict getting close to secure children into second-row child seats. When off-roading, running boards compromise trail clearance. Installing an aftermarket electric step rail would be better. These fold up after climbing aboard and automatically deploy when exiting the vehicle.

For those who use the roof rails, a handy aftermarket doorstep hooks into the door latch point. There are many choices online, and most have a weight rating of 400 pounds. Pricing ranges from $10 to $50 a step.

With dozens of outfitting choices, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail owner can hit the “Add” button to be (mostly) expedition-ready.

The Lexus off-roading accessories are of quality brands, but owners can shop for lower prices at aftermarket sites. However, a winch is not among the accessories. Loading up on the GX Overtrail accessories includes a Lexus warranty, which can be financed with the vehicle.

Rock Rails: $990. If you will be bashing down the Rubicon Trail, these rock rails will help protect the lower rocker panels. However, I have also seen rock rails torn off long-wheelbase vehicles on the way down.

Roof Rack $1,580. And the rack is useless without the optional cross bars, $560

ARB Premium Recovery Kit $526. Essential tools include:

  • Tree trunk protector;
  • Snatch strap, snatch block and bow shackles;
  • ARB snatch strap;
  • ARB snatch block to increase the tow winch capacity and facilitate winching from varying angles;

ARB Twin Portable Compressor $1,012. Serious off-roading requires an air compressor, portable or hard-wired to the vehicle (my preference). ARB does not cite what size tires this portable unit can handle. I expect it is intended for the 33s on the GX 550 Overtrail+.

ARB Air Compressor Pump Up Kit $114. Add this kit for its 20-foot air hose to air up after a trail run. The kit includes quick couplings and a T-junction for connecting an air check and pressure switch.

ARB TRED Pro $370, in red or gun-metal gray. Don’t leave home without these treads for lost traction in sand, mud, or snow. And ARB TRED Pro Mounting Kit $102.

Why Buy the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+?

Who knew there were Lexus GX owners serious about off-grid travel? And why would GX owners subject the hand-rubbed paint of their pricey SUV to trail pinstriping? Will Lexus field a team for the Rebelle Rally? Will Lexus participate in the Overland Expos?

Only time will answer those questions. According to Automotive News, Lexus believes it can sell roughly 33,000 GX models in the U.S. in 2024. That tally puts the 2024 GX only slightly ahead of the 31,910 sold last year.

For now, the GX 500 Overtrail+ is a beefy, body-on-frame truck. In some respects, it has more in common with a Toyota than the luxury of a Lexus. However, there are valuable separators in Lexus warranty coverages, destinations by Lexus properties, and the kinder, gentler treatment at the dealership.

For those who still prefer the vault-like qualities of the previous Toyota Land Cruiser, they are still available in the Lexus LX 600.
