BY MARK MAYNARD

The Toyota 4Runner is a stalwart SUV for the ages — literally. It has been 15 years since there was a full redesign of the 4Runner. Though it has worn well, 15 years is a lifetime in this age of redesigns every four to six years. Yet, the 4Runner’s lifespan is not so unusual for Toyota. This carmaker is known to build it right the first time so that it can ride for years, with timely updates.

Now in its sixth generation, the 4Runner is a throwback to the early days when SUVs took a rib from pickup trucks. And the completely reworked 2025 4Runner is reborn as a rugged ladder-frame SUV based largely on the Tacoma pickup.

Toyota used this redesign to push 4Runner farther into luxury and more extreme off-roading, with a new Trailhunter for “overlanding.” Like “Platinum” levels of pickups, the 4Runner Platinum ($64,310) is at home in the backcountry or the country club.

Overlanding to more remote destinations became popular as an escape clause from restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As before, the 4Runner is available in rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, and full-time 4WD.

The 2025 4Runner went on sale Jan. 28, 2025, but all nine of the trim-level choices might be in short supply. Starting prices range from $41,000 to $70,000, including the $1,450 freight charge from Tahara, Japan. Many options are available to push the price, including quality accessories for camping and travel with pets.

Passion for the Nameplate

The 2025 4Runner shows how far it has evolved since the first 4Runner debuted in 1984. It was built from the Toyota Hilux pickup and was a simple two-door compact with a fiberglass shell over the bed.

Since its U.S. debut, 3 million 4Runners have been sold. It is a beloved nameplate, ranking with the Ford Mustang, VW Beetle, Nissan Z, and even the old Toyota Land Cruiser. The new 4Runner competes with competent competitors such as the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

As with any product that has succeeded for 40 years, it seems everybody has a 4Runner story. I spoke with an automotive industry professional, now with a major EV charging network, who owns a 23-year-old 4Runner. He said he loves it “so much I’ll be buried in it.”

4Runner’s last full redesign was in 2009 as a 2010 model year, but Toyota continued to make timely updates.

The 2014 model received a facelift with interior improvements. The TRD Pro trim was added, and in 2017, it was renamed TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium. In between, Toyota added more safety and advanced digital technologies and more choices for bigger wheels, audio systems, and paint colors.

The TRD Pro has SofTex-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, 8-way power-adjustable with 4-way power lumbar support.

2025 4Runner Media Drive

Toyota was in San Diego in late January for a North American media drive of the 2025 4Runner. Journalists could have seat time in several of the nine trim levels, including a base SR5 to the new Platinum and Trailhunter. There was on-road driving and off-roading on the dirt tracks of Vogt Ranch, about 40 miles east of San Diego.

Owen Peacock, Toyota’s marketing GM, called the 4Runner a window to bigger worlds.

For fans of 4Runner, yes, the 2025 4Runner is good, but like many 40-year-olds, it is now bigger and heavier. Its exterior styling looks about the same as the 2024 4Runner but with more distinctions between trim levels.

The 4Runner has Limited has premium leather-trimmed tan upholstery.

The 4Runner Limited has premium leather-trimmed upholstery.

Toyota’s extensive Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all trims. Active safety and advanced driving technologies now include Proactive Driving Assist.

Of interest to past and current 4Runner owners is fuel economy. Yes, the turbo 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines get slightly better mileage than the previous V-6.

Journalists were able to have generous seat time, yet the vehicles were “preproduction.” That means they were very close to being production level, but there might be some variations in content or features.

My story is not a review but an overview of various trim levels of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner. I hope to have a test week at home soon with any of the trim levels. I was impressed by the base SR5 as the most affordable model with its voluminous cargo capacity. Details are below.

Is Bigger Better?

The new 4Runner feels robust and stable on the road or trail. It is built on a wheelbase that is 2.4 inches longer with a body almost 4 inches longer. The body is also 2.1 inches wider and taller by 1.1 inches, without a roof rack.

Curb weights are also up, ranging from 4,455 pounds for the rear-wheel-drive SR5 to 5,500 pounds for the Trailhunter. That poundage is 50 to 695 pounds heavier than the 2024 model.

Trailhunter is traction-capable with 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires on 18-inch bronze-finished wheels.

Other thumbnail stats include:

  • Towing capacity is now up to 6,000 pounds, a thousand more than before.
  • Gone is the 4.0-liter V-6 engine, replaced by a choice of two i-Force turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains, one of which is a gasoline-electric hybrid.
  • Gone is the five-speed automatic transmission, replaced by a new eight-speed automatic gearbox.
  • Gone is the tidy 37.4-foot turning circle, replaced by a span 2 feet wider.
  • Gone is the 23-gallon fuel tank, now four gallons smaller.
  • Gone are the standard 17-inch wheels, updated to 18-inch or optional 20-inch alloy wheels.
  • Off-road ground clearance is less and more for 2025. The 2024 4Runner has ground clearances of 9 or 9.6 inches, 2WD to 4WD. The new 4Runner has ground clearances of 8.1 2WD to 10.1 inches for the more extreme off-roading models, including a 1-inch lift.

4Runner Powertrains and Fuel Economy

Two turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines are new for the 2025 4Runner. Both have Toyota’s D-4ST direct fuel injection and double overhead camshafts.

  • Entry T24A-FTS i-Force engine has 278 horsepower and peak torque of 317 foot-pounds at 1,700 rpm. Fuel economy estimates for rear-wheel-drive models are 20/26/22 mpg city/highway/combined, but the 4Runner Limited drops to 24 mpg highway. Four-wheel drive mileage ratings are 19/25/21 mpg.
  • 2.4-liter i-Force Max hybrid engine produces 326 hp and peak torque of 465 lb.-ft., also at 1,700 rpm. With standard part-time 4WD, the i-Force Max has fuel economy ratings of 24/23/23 mpg. The hybrid engine is standard on the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum trims and optional for the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited.

Both engines run on 87-octane fuel.

Side LED lantern or multitool. The nifty palm-size flashlight, a $160 accessory, has several lighting modes, including a red warning light. It clicks into the end of the driver-side instrument panel and is accessible only when the door is open. Alternatively, you can opt for the Side Storage Multi-Tool, $50, which fits in the same round cutout as the lantern.

Mult-Terrain View Monitor. An indispensable asset when trail driving. The 14-inch panoramic camera monitor is the driver’s “spotter,” showing video moving forward, the front tires, rear, and underside. With cameras aimed at both front tires, it is reassuring information to avoid jagged rocks.

Power rear tailgate window. Back by popular demand, the power rear tailgate gives quick access to the cargo area with exterior window switches.

Locking rear differential. Off-roaders should not head to the trails without this piece of technology.

Disconnecting front stabilizer bar. This useful tech helps increase the range of motion to keep traction to the tire. It is standard on TRD Pro and Trailhunter. When will this trick move down the line as an option?

5 Observations and Considerations

4Runner vs. Land Cruiser. It doesn’t seem very clear to offer a 4Runner when Toyota also positions its Land Cruiser as a superior overlanding vehicle. Both are built on the same TNGA-F global body-on-frame architecture. Both use the same hybrid powertrain, and both have full-time 4WD. And both cost around $70,000 with some desirable options and accessories.

Cargo complications. 4Runner cargo space for the gas model is a huge 44.8 cubic feet. However, cargo space in the hybrid models loses 7.6 cu.ft., compromised by the placement of the battery beneath the floor. The battery-tray packaging protrudes about 6 inches above the floor, causing a high load floor. (And that is why the hybrid has no third-row option.)

Tumble-forward back seats. Though a well-engineered design, the folded seats do not provide a contiguous flat space that overlanders could use for sleeping.

Turning circle. The off-roading mantra of tread lightly gets complicated with the 4Runner’s turning circle, which is almost 40 feet with 20-inch tires. The larger 4Runner’s front and rear tread tracks are 65.6 inches from wheel to wheel, which is 3.2 inches wider than before.

Aesthetic hood scoop. Why add a nonfunctioning hood scoop that interferes with sightlines across the hood?

Which 2025 Toyota 4Runner to Buy?

I spent thousands of dollars and hours updating a heavy-duty 1987 Suburban to become an overlanding rig. In the long run, buying a new, fully equipped off-roader might be less expensive.

My choice today is the TRD Off-Road Premium in Everest green paint. The base engine seems to have plenty of power on the road or off, and I can live with the fuel economy estimates. Plus, I would rather have the bigger and more functional cargo area.

I’d also add all-weather floor liners ($248), a carpeted cargo mat ($130), and a cargo cover ($135). I would consider the rock rails for $990, the side-LED lantern for $160, and the Sirius satellite radio for $350 with 33 months prepaid.

All in, my TRD Off-Road Premium would cost $56,933, about what I spent buying and upfitting my Suburban over 10 years.

BY MARK MAYNARD

Kia America has completed its trio of Sorento SUV powertrains with the 2025 Sorento PHEV plug-in hybrid. All versions of the midsize Sorento SUV have three rows of seats and drive configurations of front- or all-wheel drive.

The 2025 Sorento plug-in hybrid is now on sale with a battery-electric driving range of 30-32 mpg. In addition to the new powertrain variant, Kia has updated the 2025 Sorento PHEV and Hybrid models with a range of enhancements. Kia says that many of the updates aim to cater to the digital needs of today’s consumers.

The Sorento’s PHEV powertrain integrates a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 66.9 kW electric motor, and a 13.8 kWh battery. The Sorento PHEV has an EPA-estimated 74 MPGe combined and an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 30 miles. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard.

For 2025, the Sorento PHEV is sold in two trim levels of EX and SX Prestige. Pricing for the 2025 Sorento PHEV EX starts at $49,365, and the PHEV SX Prestige starts at $54,465. Manufacturer suggested retail pricing includes the $1,375 freight charge from Hwasung, Korea. While gasoline-powered Sorentos are built in West Point, Ga., the electrified models are built in Korea. Check current Sorento PHEV pricing here.

The 2025 Kia Sorento in the new paint color of Volcanic Sand

The mildly refreshed 2025 Kia Sorento PHEV has a sleeker appearance from new standard lighting elements, including Kia’s signature Star Map lighting.

Kia Sorento Background

Now in its fourth generation in the U.S., the Kia Sorento debuted in February 2002; the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. The Kia Sorento transitioned from a body-on-frame to a unibody chassis in 2011 with the second generation of the vehicle. Kia maintained its popular-selling Sorento with redesigns, fresh engineering, or facelifts about every two years.

The current 2025 Sorento was completely redesigned and re-engineered in 2020. It was made larger on a longer wheelbase and offered a hybrid or gas engine. A mild refresh for the 2024 model year added vertically stacked and slimmer LED headlights and a smoother front bumper design aligned with the grille. The front lights are reminiscent of the EV9 and the 2025 Carnival, influenced by Kia’s new design language. The rear lights and bumper had minor tweaks.

The Sorento fits into the Kia lineup between the smaller Sportage and the larger Telluride.

What’s New for the 2025 Kia Sorentos?

Kia says the 2025 Sorento PHEV and Sorento Hybrid were updated for a sleeker appearance, using new standard lighting elements. Among the lighting updates include Kia’s signature Star Map lighting in the front and rear, and amber daytime running lights.

Plug-in and HEV models also have special paint colors: Cityscape Green, Mineral Blue, and Volcanic Sand. Also new is a Dust Blue interior hue and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Interior enhancements feature many digital elements. A standard panoramic instrument panel has a 4.3-inch TFT (Thin Film Transistor) and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The SX-Prestige is upgraded to a curved panoramic panel linking two 12.3-inch dual screens. This display unlocks Kia’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit operating system. Kia says the new OS has faster processing speeds and over-the-air update capability. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as are USB-C ports throughout all three rows. The SX-Prestige adds such luxury elements as a suede headliner, ventilated front seats, and Advanced Digital Key 2.0.

Notable driver convenience systems added to the 2025 Sorento models include available Smart Cruise Control-Machine Learning. Kia says SCC Machine Learning will monitor about 1-2 hours of the user’s driving. The system will then use that data to set preferences such as following distance, rates of acceleration and deceleration, and reaction speed. The result is a more intuitive and personalized driving experience.

Smart Cruise functions with Kia’s Highway Driving Assist 2. Its features include automatic lane change to help the vehicle maintain a set distance from the vehicle detected ahead. It also helps the vehicle stay within lane markers on select highways and aids in lane changes.

Among the 2025 Sorento updates is a curved panoramic panel linking two 12.3-inch screens.

BY MARK MAYNARD

The Toyota Corolla Cross makes the most of a small space with a styling stance that screams “Youthful.” On sale in North America since 2022, the compact-class Corolla Cross is available in hybrid or gas-powered models. All trim levels have Toyota’s suite of standard safety technologies, and all-wheel-drive is standard on Hybrid models.

With its interior designed for rewarding function, the Corolla Cross has a get-in-and-go adventurous attitude, even if just driving to work. The ride quality can feel jaunty on the interstate, but everywhere else it is an asset for city living.

Unique front and rear styling and optional two-tone paint choices visually separate the gas and hybrid models.

Pricing starts at $30,000 for the base front-wheel-drive model rising to $33,000 for the top XSE AWD. The Corolla Cross is being built at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Ala.

Around a dozen competitors of the Corolla Cross gas model include the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Honda HR-V. The slim subcompact hybrid segment includes the Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro Hybrid, and Lexus UX.

Looking at the front seat area

The Corolla Cross has tall headroom of 39.5 inches with the moonoof.

2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid Pricing

The Corolla Cross Hybrid has four trim levels: S, SE, Nightshade, and XSE. All Hybrid models have standard electronic on-demand all-wheel drive. Starting prices include the $1,350 freight charge from the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Ala.:

  • S: $29,745
  • SE: $31,065
  • Nightshade: $31,990
  • XSE: $32,160.

Today’s tester is a Soul Red and Black Nightshade Corolla Cross with an as-tested price of $35,447. It had two factory option packages: JBL Premium Audio, $800, and the Moonroof package, $940. Accessories included all-weather floor mats and cargo liner, $289; a rear bumper protector, $89; a frameless rearview Homelink mirror, $175; and door sill protectors, $179.

Soul Red Crystal with the black roof is a $975 add-on. The two tones in Blue Crush Metallic and black or Silver Sonic and black are $500. Solid colors of Soul Red Crystal and Wind Chill Pearl are $475 each.

The base Corolla Cross Hybrid S is ideal for buyers who can live without a moonroof, power liftgate, adaptive (turning) headlights, or a potent audio system. Paint colors are limited to four (and no two-tone), and one option of Wind Chill Pearl is $425.

For those who can’t handle manual seat adjustment (such as my girlfriend-wife), the XSE is a contender. It adds features such as SofTex-trimmed upholstery, LED fog lights, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support (but still just a four-way manual front passenger seat), a HomeLink rearview mirror, and a tonneau cover.

2 Must-Have Accessories

With news reports of catalytic converters being sawed off for sale, I would opt for the MillerCAT Cat Shield for $430. The shield, built for strength and corrosion resistance, helps protect the converter from midnight theft.

Also of interest is the Carmate DC4000RA Dashcam 360, $570. This dashcam provides a simultaneous camera view, including a swipeable and zoomable 360-degree panoramic view. It records multiple lateral directions from the vehicle, and a built-in infrared LED enables recording inside the vehicle, even at night.

There are also many camping accessories (such as shade covers, tables and chairs, and a hammock). Pet products range from dog harnesses and a booster seat to a back-seat barrier.

The Night Moves of Nightshade

The Nightshade trim level is another youthful tease. Its features build on the SE and adds:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels with black-painted finish
  • Black and red fabric trimmed seating with red contrast stitching
  • Carpet floor and cargo liners
  • Dark-accented LED projector low- and high-beam headlights with automatic high beams with auto on/off feature
  • Dark-accented taillights
  • Leather-trimmed steering wheel with red contrast stitching
  • Shift boot with red contrast stitching
  • Black rear liftgate garnish and  black outside door handles
  • Black rear spoiler and black cross bars

What’s New for 2025?

Changes across the Corolla Cross lineup for 2025 are mostly cosmetic.

Look for matte black mirror caps and shark fin antenna on the L and S trim levels. All other trims have gloss black mirror caps and shark fin antenna on all other grades. The AWD badge also moves to the rear across the lineup, and a Hybrid Electric Vehicle “HEV” badge is now on the rear liftgate of the Hybrid models.

Soul Red Crystal is a new paint choice, $425, available on the gas LE and XLE and Hybrid SE and XSE grades. For a two-tone combination, Soul Red Crystal can be paired with a Jet Black Roof on the top hybrid trims for $975. The Corolla Cross Hybrid Nightshade continues for 2025 with new two-tone styles of Wind Chill Pearl or Soul Red Crystal with Jet Black Roof exterior colors. In total, there are 11 Corolla Cross color choices.

Corolla Cross Powertrains and Fuel Economy

Corolla Cross models have a 2.0-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine and an electronically continuously controlled automatic transmission. They also use the recommended 87-octane fuel.

Powertrain similarities end there, however.

The Corolla Cross gasoline has 169 horsepower. Its front-drive fuel economy ratings are 31/33/32 mpg city/highway/combined, and its AWD rating is 29/32/30 mpg.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s performance jumps to 196 hp with 139 foot-pounds of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. With standard AWD, the hybrid model has fuel-economy ratings of 45 mpg city, 38 highway, and 42 mpg combined. My testing averaged 38.6 mpg in mixed city and highway driving.

Toyota cites 0-60 mph acceleration in 8 seconds, but that comes amid a clamor of engine noise.

Placing the hybrid battery under the back seat squeezed the fuel tank from 12.4 to 10.6 gallons. Still, the Hybrid’s range is good at around 400 miles.

The open engine bay of the Corolla Cross Hybrid

Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system has a combined 196 horsepower.

Interior Function

Toyota calls the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s exterior styling “approachable” with a higher line-of-sight. The sturdy stance disguises the upright interior, with open sightlines across the hood and over the shoulder.

The interior is not flamboyantly designed but has the right amount of toughness where it is needed. The materials show Toyota’s new attention to using more refined materials and textures.

The driver seat has a six-way manual adjustment and four-way for the front passenger.

Fabric seats in the base S model are surprisingly supportive, but there are sportier fabric seats in the SE, and Softex synthetic leather upholstery in the XSE, with heated front seats and a power driver’s seat.

The Corolla Cross’s smart packaging provides tall front headroom and back-seat space for a young family. However, the 32-inch back-seat legroom is tight for adults.

Cargo space has square dimensions for friends-helping-friends move into the new condo. The cargo entry is 43 inches wide by 29 inches from floor to headliner. Fold the 60/40 back seatbacks for about 6 1/2 feet in length.

Connectivity Features

Among the standard connectivity features are USB-C charge ports and a multimedia audio system. The multimedia system, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, also allows over-the-air updates.

An active Drive Connect subscription ($15 or $25 plans) provides access to Intelligent Assistant (“Hey, Toyota”), Cloud Navigation and Destination Assist for map, traffic, and routing information. Learn more about Toyota Connected Services here.

New Vehicle Warranties

Toyota’s bumper-to-bumper new-vehicle warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles and 5 years or 60,000 miles for the powertrain.

Hybrid-related components that require repairs to correct defects in materials or workmanship are covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first from the original date of first use when sold as new.

The hybrid battery is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and is transferable across ownership.

The warranty package includes ToyotaCare, which covers factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles and two years of roadside assistance.

Why Buy the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid?

If shopping for maximum fuel economy, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is the winner. And the Hybrid pricing starts at around $3,350 more than the Corolla Cross gas engine. With the Hybrid’s diminutive fuel tank of just 10.6 gallons I was averaging 38.6 mpg. With that, the Hybrid’s cruising range is around 400 miles. Fill-ups will be quick and should cost less than $50 in any region of the U.S. mainland.

BY MARK MAYNARD

For buyers seeking a new vehicle with a solid reputation, the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek is living a charmed life. With a complete redesign for 2024, the Crosstrek has earned a bevy of industry awards.

But don’t just take my word for it. The new Crosstrek was named a Consumer Reports Top Pick. The CR editors said, “The Subaru Crosstrek is one of the most researched cars on ConsumerReports.org, and for good reason: It delivers an excellent ride, good fuel economy, standard all-wheel drive, and enough ground clearance for mild off-roading all in a reasonably sized and priced package. We wish the base engine didn’t feel so feeble or get so loud, but otherwise, the well-rounded Crosstrek is currently the highest-scoring subcompact SUV.”

Among the roster of Crosstrek accolades:

  • IIHS Top Safety Pick: The 2024 Crosstrek is a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Crosstrek has been a Top Safety Pick every year since 2013.
  • NHTSA 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score: The 2024 Crosstrek received the top five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com Best Resale Value: The Crosstrek earned the best resale value in its class for six years.
  • Autotrader Best New Car: Best New Car.
  • Kelley Blue Book Best New Cars for Teens: One of the Best New Cars for Teens.
  • J.D. Power Best Small SUV of 2024.

Of Subaru’s nine-model lineup, Crosstrek was the brand’s No. 2 seller in December 2024 with sales of 17,088. It ranked just behind sales leader Forester at 17,149. Third is the Outback wagon, which has sales of 14,885.

Crosstrek Lineage

The Crosstrek’s history goes back to the 2013 U.S. launch of the Subaru XV Crosstrek, a “Crossover Vehicle.” (The XV initials were dropped in 2016.) A gasoline-electric hybrid version came out in 2014, and a plug-in hybrid version was added in 2019. The plug-in model was dropped in 2023, but a hybrid variant using Toyota technology will be offered in 2025.

The second generation debuted in 2017 and offered a six-speed manual transmission. Crosstrek had a facelift for the 2021 model year. Updates included new driver-assistance technologies and an optional 2.5-liter “boxer” four-cylinder engine.

This third-generation Crosstrek is built on the Subaru Global Platform and underpins other Subaru models. Subaru says the body is 10 percent stiffer in torsional rigidity than the previous generation. With the stiffer body, Subaru engineers also built some flexibility into the chassis movements for greater road adhesion.

For 2024, Subaru added the Crosstrek Wilderness trim level.

2025 Subaru Crosstrek Pricing

The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek has five all-wheel-drive trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness. All models have standard all-wheel drive, incline start assist, and two four-cylinder engine choices. The Lineartronic continuously variable automatic transmission simulates eight shifts, and top trim levels get paddle shifters.

Retail pricing includes the $1,345 freight charge from Lafayette, Ind., or Japan for Crosstrek Base:

  • Base: $26,540
  • Premium: $28,085
  • Sport: $30,935; Alpine Green paint is a $395 option.
  • Limited: $32,440
  • Wilderness: $33,540

The Crosstrek Limited tester with two options costs $36,205. Alpine Green paint costs $395. Option package 33, which costs $2,445, adds a power moonroof, a 10-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, and a Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch multimedia navigation system.

Special offers at the time of publication included:

  • 3.9 percent APR financing for 72 months;

Subaru Crosstrek Limited

I liked the Limited as a tough but refined compact SUV. It does not have the many pops of color bits of the Sport or Wilderness, which make me feel like I should belong to an off-roading club. The Limited is a more urban expression of capability without calling attention to its ability.

The Limited equipment builds on the Sport trim level with more standard features. Additions include Blind-Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Automatic Emergency Steering, and Reverse Automatic Braking. Interior perks include accent lighting and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with two-way lumbar support.

Inside, the Subaru Crosstrek Limited has durable two-tone black and gray perforated leather-appointed seats with contrast orange stitching. The leather treatment extends to the shift lever boot, center console storage lid, door armrests, and instrument panel. Chrome interior door handles and chrome-trimmed power window switches add bits of shine.

Outside, the Limited is dressed in 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels with machine finish and body-color exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Two option packages are available for the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. The first adds a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with a 432-watt amplifier and a power moonroof for $1,795 MSRP. (The standard audio package has six speakers.) The second package, $2,445, picks up the Harman Kardon audio system and power moonroof and adds the Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch multimedia navigation system powered by TomTom.

Subaru Crosstrek Safety Technologies

All Subaru Crosstrek models have eight air bags (including a driver knee bag and front passenger seat-cushion air bag), blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking.

The suite of Eyesight driver-assist technologies includes advanced adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane departure and sway warning, and a lead vehicle start alert.

An 18-inch wheel and Falken tire

Performance, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy

I would not want any less than the 182-hp in the Crosstrek. The 2.5-liter flat four-cylinder moves out tentatively until the engine gets into the torque range. There is strong force between about 25 and 55 mph, but passing power is thin at 65 mph and above. I used Sport mode except when cruising on the Interstate.

Crosstrek Limited has a curb weight of 3,391 (with options; 3,349 without), but it is just 72 pounds heavier than the Base model.

The 2.5-liter engine was revised for 2024 with new camshafts, which raise torque to 178 foot-pounds at 3,700 rpm. That is just 2 pound-feet more than before, but peak torque drops by 700 rpm. More torque at a lower rpm provides a quicker getaway from the traffic light and more acceleration control while off-road.

Official fuel economy ratings are 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 mpg combined, using the recommended 87 octane.

The Lineartronic CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) was retuned in the redesign for better low-speed performance, and with the addition of a CVT cooler. The Lineartronic transmission uses a chain instead of a belt, which is longer lasting and responds faster to throttle input. A manual mode simulates eight gear changes, which can be helpful off-road to control downhill speed. The tow rating is surprisingly strong at 3,500 pounds with a 400-pound tongue weight.

What is Symmetrical All Wheel Drive?

Perhaps the Crosstrek’s greatest asset will never be experienced in a dealership test drive. Subaru’s “symmetrical” all-wheel drive is more than full-time AWD. It is an entire drive system philosophy. It begins with the low-mounted boxer engine, with the driveshaft to the rear differential mounted in a straight, symmetrical line. Most 4WD systems have an offset driveshaft from the front transfer case to the axle and a second driveshaft centered from the transmission to the rear axle.

X-Mode is an electronic hill descent control system that automatically controls the throttle and brakes, allowing drivers to focus on steering. However, this setting only works for trail riding up to 12 mph. Improvements to the X-Mode control now automatically restore it when the speed drops to 22 mph.

Dual-function X-Mode is a secondary setting for use in more extreme snow, sand, or mud conditions. Engagement by a console button (or through the infotainment touchscreen) allows for some wheel spin to maintain forward momentum.

The open passenger door showing the door panel and bottle holder slot

Crosstrek Ride and Handling

Subaru’s dual-pinion electric power-assisted steering is unrecognized for its smooth-rolling finesse and quick turn-in.

An outstanding asset of Crosstrek Limited is friction-free rolling. Around town, it is like riding on a whisper. The tester’s 18-inch Falken Ziex ZE001 (225/55) tires have a compliant, midrange treadwear rating of 360. Replacement tires cost around $150 each, not including installation.

With the combination of the low position of the engine and driveline, there is much-reduced body roll in cornering. On my backcountry run, I steered into tight S-turns and prepared for the expected weight transition of a raised suspension. But there was no roll, just a flat execution through the corners. It brought a smile and encouraged me to push a little harder into the next turn. It might be different with a gear lashed to the roof, but I will call Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive a passive stability system.

Inside, the cabin is reasonably soundproofed, including a laminated windshield. But those heavy-duty roof rails can generate wind noise.

Looking into the front passenger compartment through the open door

Crosstrek Limited has durable leather-trimmed upholstery with orange stitching.

Interior Function

The Crosstrek cabin is efficient and roomy. The entry step-in height is comfortable. Driver sightlines are uncluttered at the side mirrors and over the shoulder.

Front headroom is good at 38.7 inches, or 39.8 inches, without the sunroof. Seat comfort is sufficient for a three-hour drive, but I wished for more upper-body bolster control for powering through the S-turns. Substantial sun visors have extenders, and armrest pads are thick and comfy. The wireless charging pad just ahead of the shift console has a thoughtful light for nighttime visibility.

A 10-way power driver’s seat is a valuable feature in the moonroof package. But the front passenger gets just a four-way manual seat — it should be power in the $36K Crosstrek Limited.

There is much black and Gunmetal Gray plastic that is acceptable in appearance for this little workhorse. Creative trim elements add visual texture to the plastic-ness. Piano black around the gearshift showed scratches, with just 4,128 miles on the test vehicle.

But there is no heated steering wheel? That is a mistake!

My biggest gripe is the 11.6-inch multimedia-plus tablet screen. I’m sure it is efficient packaging to access phone, navigation, and apps, but the display is limiting. The rearview camera view is narrow and small, and glare can complicate views. A row of digital buttons at the tablet’s base is a quick fix to adjust temperature and fan speed while driving. However, those actions take eyes from the road to hunt and tap.

There is a 12-volt plug of 120 watts, but it should be stronger at 180 watts. For campers, a household 120-volt outlet would be beneficial for powering air pumps, auxiliary lighting, and chargers.

Looking into the back seat through open left side door

Back seat roominess is a smart compromise between cargo space and legroom. (Mark Maynard)

Back Seat and Cargo Space

Back seat roominess is a smart compromise between cargo space and legroom. However, the bench is short on adult thigh support, but that helps legroom of 36.5 inches.

Side windows go all the way down, and the doors open to nearly 90 degrees. That smart Subaru engineering benefits parents strapping toddlers into child seats or loading gear for camping. However, the big-shoed passenger’s foot space through the back doors is tight.

Fold the back seats for about 5 1/2 feet in length. The cargo entry is wide at 40 ½ inches and 28 ½ inches from floor to headliner.

Why Buy the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Limited?

The Subaru Crosstrek is a long-term keeper. It is smartly simple and conforms comfortably to busy lives. The Limited model is a step up in features without a big price jump.

For maintenance DIY-ers, all the regularly checked engine fluids are clearly marked, and the oil filter is at the top of the engine.

Maybe next year, Subaru will add the hybrid engine choice.

2025 Audi SQ7 Specifications

BY MARK MAYNARD

The V8-powered, 500-horsepower Audi SQ7 is engineered for connectivity. Not digital connectivity so much as the relationship connection between driver and vehicle. It is a spidey sense of clear communication. It begins with the handshake of the steering wheel, followed by the welcome aboard rumble of the 4.0-liter V-8 on start-up. The electronic air suspension conducts a seat-of-the-pants conversation, helping the driver know how each axle and tire are performing.

This is European muscle, not the raucous hoonigan style of American muscle cars.

The three-row SQ7 is the performance pinnacle in Audi’s three-trim Q7 line, including turbocharged four- and V-6 engines. All of the goodness in the SQ7 also pours into the two-row SQ8 with its sportback roofline. And the SQ8 has a higher performance model in the 651-hp RS Q8. Starting at $137,495, it is a blink faster to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

There is as much utility as there is sport to the SQ7’s elite performance. After all, it is a family-class SUV at heart, built from the Audi Q7. All-wheel drive is standard, or Quattro in Audi-speak.

The SQ7 is rapid transit with a second-row bench, a passable pair of third-row seats, and formidable cargo capacity. The Q7’s straight roofline provides much usable space.

There are few competitors in this $100,000 Euro club. Starting at $98,195, the SQ7 is a throwdown to the BMW X5 M ($125,975) and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S ($130,800).

The front sport seats are bolstered but not so steep as to rub on entry or give a wedgie on exit.

Elite, Elevated, and Executive Class

The SQ7 is a performance package of purpose, not pretense. The exterior design is executive calmed. There is no boastful badging, exaggerated fender flares, razor-thin tire sidewalls, and wild wheel styles. Only red brake calipers and dual quad exhaust tips hint at its show of force. There is no screaming attraction of 1 percent wealth, though at $122,000, the tester is an elevated choice. The SQ7 is at peace in the church parking lot, dropping kids at school, or loading up at the home-improvement warehouse.

If needed, the Christmas tree can be lashed to the roof (with the optional crossbars). And the muscle-bound SUV can tow up to 7,700 pounds with the optional hitch and wiring harness ($750).

Driver sightlines are refreshingly wide open at the side mirrors and over the shoulder. A low and short dashboard opens forward views. A low shoulder line, mirrors offset from the body, and corner glass are assets when carving through S turns. For nose-in parking, the split-view camera shows the exact footprint and nearness to a wall, car, or shrubbery. Should the driver get distracted, the safety system gives a mule kick of brake force to protect the grille area. And the SQ7 has a complex fascia with camera lenses, sensors, and grille work.

Audi Q7 Lineage

The 2025 Audi SQ7 is primarily a German-bred and raised SUV. 28 percent of its parts are from Slovakia, where the Q7 has been built since its debut in 2005. Another 1 percent are from the U.S. or Canada.

Audi’s largest SUV in North America shares a strong family lineage. It is built on Volkswagen’s MLB platform with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne, and VW Touareg.

Audi has a larger luxury SUV, the Q6, that is sold primarily in China. Audi refers to this Q6 as a “land jet.” However, this Q6 is mechanically unrelated to the battery-electric 2025 Q6 e-tron sold in the U.S.

In the U.S., the first Q7 was first released as a 2007 model. Audi gave the Q7 several mild redesigns from 2010 to 2015. The second-generation Audi Q7 went on sale in 2015, followed by a mild redesign in 2020.

New grille inlays are L-shaped on the SQ7.

What’s New In the Redesign?

As Audi concentrated on introducing its electric e-tron models, the Q7 went unchanged until 2024 as a 2025 model. Much of the second-gen facelift is cosmetic but meaningful. Exterior updates range from new front and rear fascias, and OLED rear lights with selectable light patterns. Upper trim levels include digital daytime running lights. Inside, Audi upped the connectivity features.

On the outside, Audi’s singleframe octagonal grille has vertical inlays, visually extending its height, Audi says. The inlays have a teardrop shape on the Q7 and are L-shaped on the SQ7. The new grille contours help emphasize the elevated placement of the headlights, with the front end anchored by color-framed air intakes.

Three new metallic exterior colors were added: Sakhir Gold metallic, Ascari Blue metallic, and Chili Red metallic. All the metallic colors are $595 each, but Ascari Blue and Chili Red are SQ7 only.

Audi has maintained a tastefully forceful and enduring exterior design for its Q7 and SQ7. It is the interior, however, that needs a redesign.

Interior Changes

For 2025, the Q7 45 entry model has seam-stitching trim in a contrasting gray color. The Executive package ($1,800) adds dual-pane acoustic glass, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rear sunshades, four-zone automatic climate control, and traffic sign recognition. The SQ7 has new Carbon twill matte interior inlay.

Audi adds some red-mist attitude to the top-line SQ7 Prestige in the Sport Crimson Red package ($500). Red elements include seatbelts and red stitching on the seats, center armrest, door armrest, and center console.

Owners of previous generation Q7 will appreciate the new connectivity technologies. For the first time, multimedia apps, like Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube, can be downloaded from the Audi app store.

Audi also includes online navigation services and Traffic Light Information for 3 years at no cost. And there is a 6-month trial for streaming services and full-speed Wi-Fi.

5 Cool SQ7 Features

  • HD Matrix-design LED headlight with Audi Laser light. Standard on the Prestige trim, the laser beam pattern is active at speeds above 39 mph. High-beam headlight technology uses a blue laser to extend visibility. A small laser module in each headlight generates a blue cone of light that can extend hundreds of yards. The laser light is converted into a soft light with a color temperature of 5,500 kelvin, which is ideal for the human eye.
  • Four-wheel steering.
  • Power soft-closing doors.
  • Acoustic laminated windshield and dual-pane acoustic side glass.
  • Headlights with digital daytime running elements. The DRL has four selectable light patterns for a more personalized appearance. For the first time, the SQ7 Prestige adds digitalized OLED (organic light emitting diode) rear taillights. This lighting, too, has four digital light signatures.

Audi Q7, SQ7 Powertrains

All Audi Q7 and SQ7 models have Quattro all-wheel drive. Three different powertrains are available:

  • Q7 45 features a 261-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
  • Q7 55 has a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger.
  • SQ7 features a mighty biturbo 500-hp 4.0-liter V-8 engine. The sophisticated V-8 features a cylinder-on-demand system. When coasting or on extended downhill grades, the engine runs on four cylinders. Tip into the throttle, and the engine seamlessly switches to full force.

All Q7 55 and SQ7 models boast a towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds, adding significant practicality.

Safety Features

Standard Q7 safety features include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning. See the specifications chart below for the full list.

In the United States, the Q7 received five out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety test for front and side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Q7 its Top Safety Pick 2009, with Good ratings in all 14 measured front and side impact test categories.

A quick check for recalls at NHTSA.gov shows nothing significant.

Cargo corner cubby houses the power seat and suspension controls to lower the ride height.

Interior Function

With an easy step-in height, the driver area is a functional, hands-on experience. The short and low dashboard (rather than “cab forward”) allows clear sightlines. There are unhindered cornering views at the corner side glass and side mirrors that are offset from the body. Drivers will appreciate the openness when cresting a rise at speed when what’s on the other side could be a sharp turn or a truck. In town, there is no blockage of pedestrians in crosswalks.

Headroom with the panoramic sunroof is a tall 39.9 inches, with front legroom of 41.7 inches. The front sport seats are bolstered but not so steep as to rub on entry or give a wedgie on exit.

The interior is richly rewarding in décor but lacking in interior storage spaces. The center console is wide but has meager cup holders that are best suited for cans. There is no open space to drop a phone, and the make-do cup holders cannot keep a phone from falling out. However, door panels have slots for large bottles.

While there is wireless charging, the pad is under the console armrest. That’s not a huge issue because cabin-monitoring electronics give an audible reminder that your device is still in the vehicle.

3 Screen Array

Cabin and driving information are a three-screen array. The 12.3-inch “Audi virtual cockpit” is a high-definition digital instrument cluster. It can be configured with a map display, a sportier treatment, or the basics.

In the center stack are upper and lower screens. The top is for the camera system, navigation, phone, and media selections. The lower screen is for climate control. There is just one physical knob for volume control, an enduring Audi feature. The screen graphics are large and readable for digital adjustments for heat, AC, and fan speeds. The various settings give a tactile “thunk,” a response that helps keep eyes on the road.

Looking into the second row seats

The second-row legroom of 38.8 inches is comfortable for adults.

Second and Third Row Seating

With a max of 38.8 inches, second-row legroom is adult comfortable, at least at the window seats. With a 40/20/40 seat split, the tall center exhaust-driveline hump compromises footroom at the slim center seat. Reclining seatbacks and a B-pillar vent add to traveling comfort. The Prestige trim has fully functional climate controls for temperature, vent direction, and seat heaters.

The pair of third-row 50/50 seats are short on legroom (29.2 inches) but good for the school carpool. The seats are power-raised or lowered from the cargo area, and the seats fold flat for extended carrying capacity.

Second-row seats tilt and slide for entry-exit from the way back. And those in the third row have power seatback releases.

Cargo Space

The cargo space has usable dimensions. Fold both rows of seatbacks for 6 ½ feet in length, with 29 ½ inches in interior height. Entry at the power liftgate is 4 feet wide.

A control corner is especially handy, with switches to lower the ride height and power fold the third row. The corner notch also has a net, a bag hook, a light, and a 12-volt plug.

Fold both rows of seats for about 6 ½ feet in length.

SQ7 Performance

Hit the start button, and the V-8 gives a rumble and rev. At idle, the 4.0-liter ticks quietly like a four-cylinder. The V-8’s bravado is unobtrusive in easy driving. But punch up Dynamic mode, and the pipes open for a thunderous report.

Fuel-economy ratings on the required premium fuel are 15 mpg city, 21 highway, and 17 mpg combined. Around town, my average mileage was 10 to 13 mpg. On highway cruising, it stretched to 17.6 mpg. Mercifully, there is a 22.5-gallon fuel tank.

Audi claims 0-60 mph acceleration in a believable 4 seconds. The 4.0-liter’s 568 foot-pounds of torque make it so.

The eight-speed Tiptronic transmission is an ideal match with the V-8. Shift points are well-timed, and there is no hesitation when evasive acceleration is needed. In Dynamic sport mode, the shift response is competition grade, with strong downshift engine revs. But for a quick hit of Sport, tug the shifter back a notch. Toggle the shifter right for manual shifts.

Get Out, Get It, and Get Home

It was a quiet Monday morning when I drove out to a favorite backcountry run. The tangled shoelace of two-lane county road has soaring views and second-gear S turns. The morning rush was over, and school buses were already unloading. Now was the time to deglaze the brake discs.

Anticipate the need for power, cock the trigger, and engage. Aiming into a tight S, the SQ7 hoovers through the turn. The gutty below of the twin-turbo V-8 under pressure is invigorating and tingling. Remember to breathe, and look ahead to the next turn.

The black optic wheel package ($1,500) added 22-inch summer tires on attractive multispoke, bi-color S-design wheels. The tester’s Continental SportContact 6 tires, 285/35, are grippy-soft with a very low treadwear rating (UTQG) of 240. These tires are 10.7 inches wide and were original equipment on Audi’s high-performance R8 V10 Plus. Owners will need a second set of winter tires.

These max-performance Continentals give a lush ride quality, and try as I may, the tires would not whimper in aggressive driving. Enjoy them because replacements run around $500 each.

Looking at a closeup of the The optional 22-inch Continental SportContact 6 tires

Ride and Handling

The SQ7 is heavy—5,291 pounds at the curb, before factoring in the weighty items in some of the tester’s options. When powered up and rolling, there is no sense of heft or lean. It feels nimble and agile. Audi steadies its SQ7 sex jet with adaptive air suspension, active roll stabilization, and progressive steering. Audi pays much attention to creating a low-friction ride, which also benefits fuel economy.

While some air suspensions become jittery over rough road surfaces, Audi’s adaptive air suspension provides control and balance. Head toss at driveways or speed humps is composed. The ride quality is a true air ride.

The electromechanical progressive steering system with all-wheel steering has infinite degrees of control. The weight is two-finger easy while circling the mall parking lot and stable and precise in open cruising. At speed, the all-wheel steering helps tuck in the rear. In town, the steering system cuts the turning circle from 41 feet with standard steering to more like 38 feet. Audi doesn’t break out steering specs for four-wheel steering. However, I had no concern about curbing a wheel on my residential street.

Some of the SQ7 heft comes from vault-class side doors, but there is no slamming with soft-closers in the Prestige package. An acoustic glass windshield and side glass add some weight, but it is worth it for the traffic-calmed cabin. The extended leather in the Luxury package ($3,700) adds a few pounds and is also worth it.

This weight, like fat on a prime steak, adds flavor and pleasure, making ownership a rewarding experience.

The wide tire face is 10.7 inches wide.

10.7 inches wide.

Observations and Considerations

Accessing cruise control and the various semi-autonomous driving modes are via the old-style lower stalk on the steering column. For owners new to the Q7, it will be helpful to have a dealership tutorial, or at least to read up on how to use the system in the owner’s manual.

48-volt lithium battery. The highly sophisticated electronics in the SQ7 require the power of a 48-volt lithium battery. The battery does not assist in traction but powers the belt alternator starter (start/stop system) and other elements like the electromechanical active roll stabilization. If your SQ7 will not be driven for extended periods, the battery will gradually drain. Monthly charging is recommended, per the owner’s manual. Should the battery die, replacements must be done at the dealership. A new battery will cost around $1,800, not including dealership labor for installation and electronic configuration.

Crappy visor coverage at driver’s left. The shallow visors are most problematic with a low sun angle morning or evening. The visors have dual flaps to swing to the left but are not particularly beneficial.

Back door ashtrays in the door-side armrest? There would be no smoking in my $122,000 SUV.

Why Buy the 2025 Audi SQ7?

I like that the SQ7 is executive elite but does not require an advanced degree in Information Technology to learn how to use it. At its core, it is hands-on driving and oh-so enjoyable.

For buyers in this high-performance segment, what’s another $24,645 to get the best of Audi? Most buyers will lease rather than buy, which is smart with all the sensors, pricey tires, and a 48-volt battery.
