For buyers seeking a new vehicle with a solid reputation, the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek is living a charmed life. With a complete redesign for 2024, the Crosstrek has earned a bevy of industry awards.

But don’t just take my word for it. The new Crosstrek was named a Consumer Reports Top Pick. The CR editors said, “The Subaru Crosstrek is one of the most researched cars on ConsumerReports.org, and for good reason: It delivers an excellent ride, good fuel economy, standard all-wheel drive, and enough ground clearance for mild off-roading all in a reasonably sized and priced package. We wish the base engine didn’t feel so feeble or get so loud, but otherwise, the well-rounded Crosstrek is currently the highest-scoring subcompact SUV.”

Among the roster of Crosstrek accolades:

  • IIHS Top Safety Pick: The 2024 Crosstrek is a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Crosstrek has been a Top Safety Pick every year since 2013.
  • NHTSA 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score: The 2024 Crosstrek received the top five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • Kelley Blue Book’s KBB.com Best Resale Value: The Crosstrek earned the best resale value in its class for six years.
  • Autotrader Best New Car: Best New Car.
  • Kelley Blue Book Best New Cars for Teens: One of the Best New Cars for Teens.
  • J.D. Power Best Small SUV of 2024.

Of Subaru’s nine-model lineup, Crosstrek was the brand’s No. 2 seller in December 2024 with sales of 17,088. It ranked just behind sales leader Forester at 17,149. Third is the Outback wagon, which has sales of 14,885.

Crosstrek Lineage

The Crosstrek’s history goes back to the 2013 U.S. launch of the Subaru XV Crosstrek, a “Crossover Vehicle.” (The XV initials were dropped in 2016.) A gasoline-electric hybrid version came out in 2014, and a plug-in hybrid version was added in 2019. The plug-in model was dropped in 2023, but a hybrid variant using Toyota technology will be offered in 2025.

The second generation debuted in 2017 and offered a six-speed manual transmission. Crosstrek had a facelift for the 2021 model year. Updates included new driver-assistance technologies and an optional 2.5-liter “boxer” four-cylinder engine.

This third-generation Crosstrek is built on the Subaru Global Platform and underpins other Subaru models. Subaru says the body is 10 percent stiffer in torsional rigidity than the previous generation. With the stiffer body, Subaru engineers also built some flexibility into the chassis movements for greater road adhesion.

For 2024, Subaru added the Crosstrek Wilderness trim level.

2025 Subaru Crosstrek Pricing

The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek has five all-wheel-drive trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness. All models have standard all-wheel drive, incline start assist, and two four-cylinder engine choices. The Lineartronic continuously variable automatic transmission simulates eight shifts, and top trim levels get paddle shifters.

Retail pricing includes the $1,345 freight charge from Lafayette, Ind., or Japan for Crosstrek Base:

  • Base: $26,540
  • Premium: $28,085
  • Sport: $30,935; Alpine Green paint is a $395 option.
  • Limited: $32,440
  • Wilderness: $33,540

The Crosstrek Limited tester with two options costs $36,205. Alpine Green paint costs $395. Option package 33, which costs $2,445, adds a power moonroof, a 10-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, and a Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch multimedia navigation system.

Subaru Crosstrek Limited

I liked the Limited as a tough but refined compact SUV. It does not have the many pops of color bits of the Sport or Wilderness, which make me feel like I should belong to an off-roading club. The Limited is a more urban expression of capability without calling attention to its ability.

The Limited equipment builds on the Sport trim level with more standard features. Additions include Blind-Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Automatic Emergency Steering, and Reverse Automatic Braking. Interior perks include accent lighting and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with two-way lumbar support.

Inside, the Subaru Crosstrek Limited has durable two-tone black and gray perforated leather-appointed seats with contrast orange stitching. The leather treatment extends to the shift lever boot, center console storage lid, door armrests, and instrument panel. Chrome interior door handles and chrome-trimmed power window switches add bits of shine.

Outside, the Limited is dressed in 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels with machine finish and body-color exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Two option packages are available for the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. The first adds a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with a 432-watt amplifier and a power moonroof for $1,795 MSRP. (The standard audio package has six speakers.) The second package, $2,445, picks up the Harman Kardon audio system and power moonroof and adds the Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch multimedia navigation system powered by TomTom.

Subaru Crosstrek Safety Technologies

All Subaru Crosstrek models have eight air bags (including a driver knee bag and front passenger seat-cushion air bag), blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking.

The suite of Eyesight driver-assist technologies includes advanced adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane departure and sway warning, and a lead vehicle start alert.

Performance, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy

I would not want any less than the 182-hp in the Crosstrek. The 2.5-liter flat four-cylinder moves out tentatively until the engine gets into the torque range. There is strong force between about 25 and 55 mph, but passing power is thin at 65 mph and above. I used Sport mode except when cruising on the Interstate.

Crosstrek Limited has a curb weight of 3,391 (with options; 3,349 without), but it is just 72 pounds heavier than the Base model.

The 2.5-liter engine was revised for 2024 with new camshafts, which raise torque to 178 foot-pounds at 3,700 rpm. That is just 2 pound-feet more than before, but peak torque drops by 700 rpm. More torque at a lower rpm provides a quicker getaway from the traffic light and more acceleration control while off-road.

Official fuel economy ratings are 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 mpg combined, using the recommended 87 octane.

The Lineartronic CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) was retuned in the redesign for better low-speed performance, and with the addition of a CVT cooler. The Lineartronic transmission uses a chain instead of a belt, which is longer lasting and responds faster to throttle input. A manual mode simulates eight gear changes, which can be helpful off-road to control downhill speed. The tow rating is surprisingly strong at 3,500 pounds with a 400-pound tongue weight.

What is Symmetrical All Wheel Drive?

Perhaps the Crosstrek’s greatest asset will never be experienced in a dealership test drive. Subaru’s “symmetrical” all-wheel drive is more than full-time AWD. It is an entire drive system philosophy. It begins with the low-mounted boxer engine, with the driveshaft to the rear differential mounted in a straight, symmetrical line. Most 4WD systems have an offset driveshaft from the front transfer case to the axle and a second driveshaft centered from the transmission to the rear axle.

X-Mode is an electronic hill descent control system that automatically controls the throttle and brakes, allowing drivers to focus on steering. However, this setting only works for trail riding up to 12 mph. Improvements to the X-Mode control now automatically restore it when the speed drops to 22 mph.

Dual-function X-Mode is a secondary setting for use in more extreme snow, sand, or mud conditions. Engagement by a console button (or through the infotainment touchscreen) allows for some wheel spin to maintain forward momentum.

Crosstrek Ride and Handling

Subaru’s dual-pinion electric power-assisted steering is unrecognized for its smooth-rolling finesse and quick turn-in.

An outstanding asset of Crosstrek Limited is friction-free rolling. Around town, it is like riding on a whisper. The tester’s 18-inch Falken Ziex ZE001 (225/55) tires have a compliant, midrange treadwear rating of 360. Replacement tires cost around $150 each, not including installation.

With the combination of the low position of the engine and driveline, there is much-reduced body roll in cornering. On my backcountry run, I steered into tight S-turns and prepared for the expected weight transition of a raised suspension. But there was no roll, just a flat execution through the corners. It brought a smile and encouraged me to push a little harder into the next turn. It might be different with a gear lashed to the roof, but I will call Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive a passive stability system.

Inside, the cabin is reasonably soundproofed, including a laminated windshield. But those heavy-duty roof rails can generate wind noise.

Looking into the front passenger compartment through the open door

Crosstrek Limited has durable leather-trimmed upholstery with orange stitching.

Interior Function

The Crosstrek cabin is efficient and roomy. The entry step-in height is comfortable. Driver sightlines are uncluttered at the side mirrors and over the shoulder.

Front headroom is good at 38.7 inches, or 39.8 inches, without the sunroof. Seat comfort is sufficient for a three-hour drive, but I wished for more upper-body bolster control for powering through the S-turns. Substantial sun visors have extenders, and armrest pads are thick and comfy. The wireless charging pad just ahead of the shift console has a thoughtful light for nighttime visibility.

A 10-way power driver’s seat is a valuable feature in the moonroof package. But the front passenger gets just a four-way manual seat — it should be power in the $36K Crosstrek Limited.

There is much black and Gunmetal Gray plastic that is acceptable in appearance for this little workhorse. Creative trim elements add visual texture to the plastic-ness. Piano black around the gearshift showed scratches, with just 4,128 miles on the test vehicle.

But there is no heated steering wheel? That is a mistake!

My biggest gripe is the 11.6-inch multimedia-plus tablet screen. I’m sure it is efficient packaging to access phone, navigation, and apps, but the display is limiting. The rearview camera view is narrow and small, and glare can complicate views. A row of digital buttons at the tablet’s base is a quick fix to adjust temperature and fan speed while driving. However, those actions take eyes from the road to hunt and tap.

There is a 12-volt plug of 120 watts, but it should be stronger at 180 watts. For campers, a household 120-volt outlet would be beneficial for powering air pumps, auxiliary lighting, and chargers.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

Back seat roominess is a smart compromise between cargo space and legroom. However, the bench is short on adult thigh support, but that helps legroom of 36.5 inches.

Side windows go all the way down, and the doors open to nearly 90 degrees. That smart Subaru engineering benefits parents strapping toddlers into child seats or loading gear for camping. However, the big-shoed passenger’s foot space through the back doors is tight.

Fold the back seats for about 5 1/2 feet in length. The cargo entry is wide at 40 ½ inches and 28 ½ inches from floor to headliner.

Why Buy the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek Limited?

The Subaru Crosstrek is a long-term keeper. It is smartly simple and conforms comfortably to busy lives. The Limited model is a step up in features without a big price jump.

For maintenance DIY-ers, all the regularly checked engine fluids are clearly marked, and the oil filter is at the top of the engine.

Maybe next year, Subaru will add the hybrid engine choice.

BY MARK MAYNARD

The V8-powered, 500-horsepower Audi SQ7 is engineered for connectivity. Not digital connectivity so much as the relationship connection between driver and vehicle. It is a spidey sense of clear communication. It begins with the handshake of the steering wheel, followed by the welcome aboard rumble of the 4.0-liter V-8 on start-up. The electronic air suspension conducts a seat-of-the-pants conversation, helping the driver know how each axle and tire are performing.

This is European muscle, not the raucous hoonigan style of American muscle cars.

The three-row SQ7 is the performance pinnacle in Audi’s three-trim Q7 line, including turbocharged four- and V-6 engines. All of the goodness in the SQ7 also pours into the two-row SQ8 with its sportback roofline. And the SQ8 has a higher performance model in the 651-hp RS Q8. Starting at $137,495, it is a blink faster to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

There is as much utility as there is sport to the SQ7’s elite performance. After all, it is a family-class SUV at heart, built from the Audi Q7. All-wheel drive is standard, or Quattro in Audi-speak.

The SQ7 is rapid transit with a second-row bench, a passable pair of third-row seats, and formidable cargo capacity. The Q7’s straight roofline provides much usable space.

There are few competitors in this $100,000 Euro club. Starting at $98,195, the SQ7 is a throwdown to the BMW X5 M ($125,975) and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S ($130,800).

Lookng at the front sport seats that are bolstered but not so steep as to rub on entry or give a wedgie on exit.

The front sport seats are bolstered but not so steep as to rub on entry or give a wedgie on exit.

Elite, Elevated, and Executive Class

The SQ7 is a performance package of purpose, not pretense. The exterior design is executive calmed. There is no boastful badging, exaggerated fender flares, razor-thin tire sidewalls, and wild wheel styles. Only red brake calipers and dual quad exhaust tips hint at its show of force. There is no screaming attraction of 1 percent wealth, though at $122,000, the tester is an elevated choice. The SQ7 is at peace in the church parking lot, dropping kids at school, or loading up at the home-improvement warehouse.

If needed, the Christmas tree can be lashed to the roof (with the optional crossbars). And the muscle-bound SUV can tow up to 7,700 pounds with the optional hitch and wiring harness ($750).

Driver sightlines are refreshingly wide open at the side mirrors and over the shoulder. A low and short dashboard opens forward views. A low shoulder line, mirrors offset from the body, and corner glass are assets when carving through S turns. For nose-in parking, the split-view camera shows the exact footprint and nearness to a wall, car, or shrubbery. Should the driver get distracted, the safety system gives a mule kick of brake force to protect the grille area. And the SQ7 has a complex fascia with camera lenses, sensors, and grille work.

Audi Q7 Lineage

The 2025 Audi SQ7 is primarily a German-bred and raised SUV. 28 percent of its parts are from Slovakia, where the Q7 has been built since its debut in 2005. Another 1 percent are from the U.S. or Canada.

Audi’s largest SUV in North America shares a strong family lineage. It is built on Volkswagen’s MLB platform with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne, and VW Touareg.

Audi has a larger luxury SUV, the Q6, that is sold primarily in China. Audi refers to this Q6 as a “land jet.” However, this Q6 is mechanically unrelated to the battery-electric 2025 Q6 e-tron sold in the U.S.

In the U.S., the first Q7 was first released as a 2007 model. Audi gave the Q7 several mild redesigns from 2010 to 2015. The second-generation Audi Q7 went on sale in 2015, followed by a mild redesign in 2020.

A low angle view of the front end

New grille inlays are L-shaped on the SQ7.

What’s New In the Redesign?

As Audi concentrated on introducing its electric e-tron models, the Q7 went unchanged until 2024 as a 2025 model. Much of the second-gen facelift is cosmetic but meaningful. Exterior updates range from new front and rear fascias, and OLED rear lights with selectable light patterns. Upper trim levels include digital daytime running lights. Inside, Audi upped the connectivity features.

On the outside, Audi’s singleframe octagonal grille has vertical inlays, visually extending its height, Audi says. The inlays have a teardrop shape on the Q7 and are L-shaped on the SQ7. The new grille contours help emphasize the elevated placement of the headlights, with the front end anchored by color-framed air intakes.

Three new metallic exterior colors were added: Sakhir Gold metallic, Ascari Blue metallic, and Chili Red metallic. All the metallic colors are $595 each, but Ascari Blue and Chili Red are SQ7 only.

Audi has maintained a tastefully forceful and enduring exterior design for its Q7 and SQ7. It is the interior, however, that needs a redesign.

The climate control and camera screen.

The climate control and multiview camera screen.

Interior Changes

For 2025, the Q7 45 entry model has seam-stitching trim in a contrasting gray color. The Executive package ($1,800) adds dual-pane acoustic glass, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rear sunshades, four-zone automatic climate control, and traffic sign recognition. The SQ7 has new Carbon twill matte interior inlay.

Audi adds some red-mist attitude to the top-line SQ7 Prestige in the Sport Crimson Red package ($500). Red elements include seatbelts and red stitching on the seats, center armrest, door armrest, and center console.

Owners of previous generation Q7 will appreciate the new connectivity technologies. For the first time, multimedia apps, like Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube, can be downloaded from the Audi app store.

Audi also includes online navigation services and Traffic Light Information for 3 years at no cost. And there is a 6-month trial for streaming services and full-speed Wi-Fi.

5 Cool SQ7 Features

  • HD Matrix-design LED headlight with Audi Laser light. Standard on the Prestige trim, the laser beam pattern is active at speeds above 39 mph. High-beam headlight technology uses a blue laser to extend visibility. A small laser module in each headlight generates a blue cone of light that can extend hundreds of yards. The laser light is converted into a soft light with a color temperature of 5,500 kelvin, which is ideal for the human eye.
  • Four-wheel steering.
  • Power soft-closing doors.
  • Acoustic laminated windshield and dual-pane acoustic side glass.
  • Headlights with digital daytime running elements. The DRL has four selectable light patterns for a more personalized appearance. For the first time, the SQ7 Prestige adds digitalized OLED (organic light emitting diode) rear taillights. This lighting, too, has four digital light signatures.

Audi Q7, SQ7 Powertrains

All Audi Q7 and SQ7 models have Quattro all-wheel drive. Three different powertrains are available:

  • Q7 45 features a 261-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
  • Q7 55 has a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger.
  • SQ7 features a mighty biturbo 500-hp 4.0-liter V-8 engine. The sophisticated V-8 features a cylinder-on-demand system. When coasting or on extended downhill grades, the engine runs on four cylinders. Tip into the throttle, and the engine seamlessly switches to full force.

All Q7 55 and SQ7 models boast a towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds, adding significant practicality.

2025 Audi SQ7 Pricing

Offered in two trim levels, the entry-level SQ7 Premium Plus starts at $92,095, and the uplevel SQ7 Prestige starts at $98,195. Manufacturer suggested retail pricing includes the $1,295 freight charge from Bratislava, Slovakia. Today’s SQ7 Prestige tester came to $122,840.

The Prestige package, $6,100, includes:

  • Dual pane acoustic side glass,
  • HD Matrix-design LED headlights with Audi laser light,
  • Headlight washers,
  • Head-up display and traffic-sign recognition,
  • Heated rear seats,
  • Intersection assist,
  • Memory presets for front passenger seat,
  • OLED taillights,
  • Soft-closing power doors,
  • Remote park assist,

Safety Features

Standard Q7 safety features include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning. See the specifications chart below for the full list.

In the United States, the Q7 received five out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety test for front and side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Q7 its Top Safety Pick 2009, with Good ratings in all 14 measured front and side impact test categories.

A quick check for recalls at NHTSA.gov shows nothing significant.

Cargo corner cubby houses the power seat and suspension controls to lower the ride height.

The cargo area corner cubby.

Interior Function

With an easy step-in height, the driver area is a functional, hands-on experience. The short and low dashboard (rather than “cab forward”) allows clear sightlines. There are unhindered cornering views at the corner side glass and side mirrors that are offset from the body. Drivers will appreciate the openness when cresting a rise at speed when what’s on the other side could be a sharp turn or a truck. In town, there is no blockage of pedestrians in crosswalks.

Headroom with the panoramic sunroof is a tall 39.9 inches, with front legroom of 41.7 inches. The front sport seats are bolstered but not so steep as to rub on entry or give a wedgie on exit.

The interior is richly rewarding in décor but lacking in interior storage spaces. The center console is wide but has meager cup holders that are best suited for cans. There is no open space to drop a phone, and the make-do cup holders cannot keep a phone from falling out. However, door panels have slots for large bottles.

While there is wireless charging, the pad is under the console armrest. That’s not a huge issue because cabin-monitoring electronics give an audible reminder that your device is still in the vehicle.

3 Screen Array

Cabin and driving information are a three-screen array. The 12.3-inch “Audi virtual cockpit” is a high-definition digital instrument cluster. It can be configured with a map display, a sportier treatment, or the basics.

In the center stack are upper and lower screens. The top is for the camera system, navigation, phone, and media selections. The lower screen is for climate control. There is just one physical knob for volume control, an enduring Audi feature. The screen graphics are large and readable for digital adjustments for heat, AC, and fan speeds. The various settings give a tactile “thunk,” a response that helps keep eyes on the road.

Looking into the second row seats

The second-row legroom of 38.8 inches is comfortable for adults.

Second and Third Row Seating

With a max of 38.8 inches, second-row legroom is adult comfortable, at least at the window seats. With a 40/20/40 seat split, the tall center exhaust-driveline hump compromises footroom at the slim center seat. Reclining seatbacks and a B-pillar vent add to traveling comfort. The Prestige trim has fully functional climate controls for temperature, vent direction, and seat heaters.

The pair of third-row 50/50 seats are short on legroom (29.2 inches) but good for the school carpool. The seats are power-raised or lowered from the cargo area, and the seats fold flat for extended carrying capacity.

Second-row seats tilt and slide for entry-exit from the way back. And those in the third row have power seatback releases.

Looking into the The pair of third-row seats.

Cargo Space

The cargo space has usable dimensions. Fold both rows of seatbacks for 6 ½ feet in length, with 29 ½ inches in interior height. Entry at the power liftgate is 4 feet wide.

A control corner is especially handy, with switches to lower the ride height and power fold the third row. The corner notch also has a net, a bag hook, a light, and a 12-volt plug.

SQ7 Performance

Hit the start button, and the V-8 gives a rumble and rev. At idle, the 4.0-liter ticks quietly like a four-cylinder. The V-8’s bravado is unobtrusive in easy driving. But punch up Dynamic mode, and the pipes open for a thunderous report.

Fuel-economy ratings on the required premium fuel are 15 mpg city, 21 highway, and 17 mpg combined. Around town, my average mileage was 10 to 13 mpg. On highway cruising, it stretched to 17.6 mpg. Mercifully, there is a 22.5-gallon fuel tank.

Audi claims 0-60 mph acceleration in a believable 4 seconds. The 4.0-liter’s 568 foot-pounds of torque make it so.

The eight-speed Tiptronic transmission is an ideal match with the V-8. Shift points are well-timed, and there is no hesitation when evasive acceleration is needed. In Dynamic sport mode, the shift response is competition grade, with strong downshift engine revs. But for a quick hit of Sport, tug the shifter back a notch. Toggle the shifter right for manual shifts.

Get Out, Get It, and Get Home

It was a quiet Monday morning when I drove out to a favorite backcountry run. The tangled shoelace of two-lane county road has soaring views and second-gear S turns. The morning rush was over, and school buses were already unloading. Now was the time to deglaze the brake discs.

Anticipate the need for power, cock the trigger, and engage. Aiming into a tight S, the SQ7 hoovers through the turn. The gutty below of the twin-turbo V-8 under pressure is invigorating and tingling. Remember to breathe, and look ahead to the next turn.

The black optic wheel package ($1,500) added 22-inch summer tires on attractive multispoke, bi-color S-design wheels. The tester’s Continental SportContact 6 tires, 285/35, are grippy-soft with a very low treadwear rating (UTQG) of 240. These tires are 10.7 inches wide and were original equipment on Audi’s high-performance R8 V10 Plus. Owners will need a second set of winter tires.

These max-performance Continentals give a lush ride quality, and try as I may, the tires would not whimper in aggressive driving. Enjoy them because replacements run around $500 each.

Looking at a closeup of the The optional 22-inch Continental SportContact 6 tires

The optional 22-inch Continental SportContact 6 tires, 285/35.

Ride and Handling

The SQ7 is heavy—5,291 pounds at the curb, before factoring in the weighty items in some of the tester’s options. When powered up and rolling, there is no sense of heft or lean. It feels nimble and agile. Audi steadies its SQ7 sex jet with adaptive air suspension, active roll stabilization, and progressive steering. Audi pays much attention to creating a low-friction ride, which also benefits fuel economy.

While some air suspensions become jittery over rough road surfaces, Audi’s adaptive air suspension provides control and balance. Head toss at driveways or speed humps is composed. The ride quality is a true air ride.

The electromechanical progressive steering system with all-wheel steering has infinite degrees of control. The weight is two-finger easy while circling the mall parking lot and stable and precise in open cruising. At speed, the all-wheel steering helps tuck in the rear. In town, the steering system cuts the turning circle from 41 feet with standard steering to more like 38 feet. Audi doesn’t break out steering specs for four-wheel steering. However, I had no concern about curbing a wheel on my residential street.

Some of the SQ7 heft comes from vault-class side doors, but there is no slamming with soft-closers in the Prestige package. An acoustic glass windshield and side glass add some weight, but it is worth it for the traffic-calmed cabin. The extended leather in the Luxury package ($3,700) adds a few pounds and is also worth it.

This weight, like fat on a prime steak, adds flavor and pleasure, making ownership a rewarding experience.

The wide tire face is 10.7 inches wide.

10.7 inches wide.

Observations and Considerations

Accessing cruise control and the various semi-autonomous driving modes are via the old-style lower stalk on the steering column. For owners new to the Q7, it will be helpful to have a dealership tutorial, or at least to read up on how to use the system in the owner’s manual.

48-volt lithium battery. The highly sophisticated electronics in the SQ7 require the power of a 48-volt lithium battery. The battery does not assist in traction but powers the belt alternator starter (start/stop system) and other elements like the electromechanical active roll stabilization. If your SQ7 will not be driven for extended periods, the battery will gradually drain. Monthly charging is recommended, per the owner’s manual. Should the battery die, replacements must be done at the dealership. A new battery will cost around $1,800, not including dealership labor for installation and electronic configuration.

Crappy visor coverage at driver’s left. The shallow visors are most problematic with a low sun angle morning or evening. The visors have dual flaps to swing to the left but are not particularly beneficial.

Back door ashtrays in the door-side armrest? There would be no smoking in my $122,000 SUV.

Why Buy the 2025 Audi SQ7?

I like that the SQ7 is executive elite but does not require an advanced degree in Information Technology to learn how to use it. At its core, it is hands-on driving and oh-so enjoyable.

For buyers in this high-performance segment, what’s another $24,645 to get the best of Audi? Most buyers will lease rather than buy, which is smart with all the sensors, pricey tires, and a 48-volt battery.

BY MARK MAYNARD

If the devil is in the details, the 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid is a mileage leader on a crusade for long-term ownership. The dramatically restyled Santa Fe is packed with innovations and smart conveniences. Now, cue the road trip for 578 miles on a tankful — with no stops to recharge.

Redesigned for 2024, the Santa Fe was given a thorough shakeout for a determined way forward. This midsize family-class SUV crossover is built on a longer wheelbase to add a third row of seats. The body is just 1.8 inches longer but the same width as before (74.8 inches).

Of special interest is increased cargo capacity. The roof was raised by 2.4 inches, providing a vertical space of 69.7 inches. Hyundai says the reconfigured space can fit three road bikes with the front wheels removed. The cargo entry is wider, too, now at 4 feet. For campers, there is wide space to roll out a sleeping bag. Large dog crates can be strapped down behind the second row, and there is a rear fan speed control.

The interior is sleek and refined with subtle “H” accents among meticulous fit and finish of trim materials. The modern cabin also was updated with more premium features. Among the additions are relaxation seats with leg rests, a UV-C sterilization compartment, and dual charging pads. Upper trim levels have a 2-foot-wide curved panoramic infotainment display.

Also new for 2024 was the choice of front-wheel drive.

Commando-Ready Stance

Developed under the “Open for More” concept, the Santa Fe is city-friendly but adventure-ready, Hyundai says. The styling intends to connect “urban customer activities with natural environments.”

Boldly blunt exterior styling has an industrial tech design ethos, providing a photo-op for several passersby. Oversized and squared-off wheel arches give a fist punch of ruggedness. A second tier of gloss black plastic is form-fitted to the arch undersides, connecting with a wide margin to span the lower body. The treatment diminishes the perception of bulk and heaviness. Black wheels add to a stance of invincibility for a stance that looks commando-ready.

There are many three-row Santa Fe competitors, including the GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and VW Atlas. However, there are just two other non-luxury SUV crossovers that offer a gasoline-electric powertrain: the Toyota Grand Highlander and the Mazda CX-90.

Exterior C-pillar assist handle. The lockable grab handle above the rear tire gives a hand up to load things on the roof rails;

Bi-directional front center console lid opens at the front or rear for 2nd row passenger access. A deep drawer on the back side gives storage.

Hyundai Pay for in-vehicle e-commerce purchases. Drivers can now pay for parking, charging, and fuel on the app screen. More than 5,800 filling stations are available, Hyundai says.

Hyundai Santa Fe Blood Line

Now in its fifth generation, the first Santa Fe had its U.S. debut for the 2001 model year. It would become Hyundai’s top-selling model for many years, with updates every four to five years.

Hyundai’s most recent full redesign of the Santa Fe was in 2019. It adopted a bolder design language and new safety, comfort, and convenience technologies. More cabin storage space was added, and driver sightlines were improved. With the larger Palisade SUV on the way, the Santa Fe Sport name was dropped.

Hyundai added more features for the 2020 Santa Fe. Among the upgrades were the safety features of a rear occupant alert and blind view monitor. Wireless device charging was made standard on more trims.

In just its third year on sale, Hyundai gave a major refresh design to the 2021 Santa Fe SUV. A new hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive was the first application in the Hyundai SUV lineup. Santa Fe went upscale with the new Calligraphy trim. A Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid would debut later in 2021.

The 2022 Santa Fe was a carryover, except for a new outdoor lifestyle XRT trim. It has a dark tone treatment of lower fascias, skid plates, 18-inch all-terrain tires, side steps, and roof cross rails.

No changes were made for the 2023 Santa Fe as the radically restyled 2024 model was on the way.

As a redesigned model for 2024, there is just one change for model year 2025: Atlantis Blue paint, no cost.

2025 Santa Fe Hybrid Pricing

Hyundai’s 2025 Santa Fe Hybrid is sold in three trim levels. All manufacturer suggested retail pricing includes the $1,415 freight charge from Ulsan, Korea. HTRAC AWD adds $1,800.

  • Santa Fe Hybrid SEL FWD $39,085; SEL Hybrid AWD $40,415;
  • Santa Fe Hybrid Limited FWD $45,515; Limited Hybrid AWD $47,315;
  • Santa Fe Hybrid Calligraphy FWD $48,665; Hybrid Calligraphy AWD $50,465.

The 2025 Calligraphy Hybrid AWD tester came to $50,675 with one option for carpeted floormats ($210).

A Santa Fe plug-in hybrid was available in 2022 and 2023, but a 2024-25 PHEV has yet to be offered. And Hyundai says, “We have nothing to announce about a future plug-in.” But just wait.

2025 Hyundai Santa Fe ICE Pricing

Hyundai offers gas powered Santa Fe models in four front-wheel drive trim levels and five trims with AWD. The Santa Fe ICE has a 277-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and eight-speed wet dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

Santa Fe ICE front-wheel-drive starting prices range from $35,615 to $48,165. AWD Santa Fe models range in price from $37,415 to $49,965. Santa Fe internal combustion models are produced at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.

Depending on the trim level, the 2025 Santa Fe Hybrid has a choice of eight to 11 colors. The Limited and Calligraphy are available in 11 hues, four of which are added cost. Serenity White and Ultimate Red are $470 each; Earthy Brass Matte and Ecotronic Gray Matte are $1,000 each.

Santa Fe Safety Systems

Even the entry Santa Fe has the essential safety features and technologies. All models have nine air bags and hefty four-wheel-disc brakes with 12.8-inch front rotors and solid 12.8-inch rotors rear.

Standard safety technologies include:

  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Warning;
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist;
  • Park Distance Warning, Forward and Reverse;
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian, Cyclist, and Junction Turning Detection;
  • Lane Keeping Assist;
  • Lane Following Assist;

Trim levels from the SRT and upward include semi-autonomous, hands-on-the-wheel driving assist, known as HDA1. The Calligraphy trims pack the top Highway Driving Assist 2. HDA2 includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, leading-vehicle distance, and a lane-centering assistance system. The HDA2 brains also have lane-change assistance and machine learning capability. I am not keen on lane-change assistance, which initiates a lane change when the turn signal is used. And I’ve never experienced machine learning that was better than my human learning.

The SQ7 4.0 liter v8 engine

The improved hybrid powertrain has front-drive mileage estimates of 36/35/36 mpg and 35/34/34 mpg AWD. (Mark Maynard photo)

2 Powertrains and Fuel Economy

As before, the new Santa Fe has two turbocharged four-cylinder engines for front- or all-wheel drive. Gas-powered models have a 277-horsepower 2.5-liter direct-injected engine and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Hybrids have a 1.6-liter direct-injected engine with a six-speed automatic. The 178-hp Smartstream 1.6-liter has 195 foot-pounds of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm. A permanent magnet synchronous motor of 44.2 kW adds an estimated 60 hp from 1,600-2,100 rpm. The lithium-ion hybrid traction battery of 1.49 kWh has a max of 270 volts.

Total combined hybrid power is 231 hp (gas engine and electric motor), with a total combined torque of 271 lb.-ft. from 1,000-4,100 rpm.

The 2024-25 Santa Fe Hybrid uses an improved powertrain from the 2021 redesign. There is a “new cooling design and a high-efficiency permanent magnet to improve the performance of the hybrid starter generator.” Shift-regen paddles at the steering wheel can adjust brake-force energy recuperation. In Sport mode, the electronic paddles revert to manual shifts.

A digital reading of 578 miles to empty

Fill the 17.7-gallon tank for 578 miles of road trip cruising.

Fuel Economy

Curb weights for the 2024-25 Santa Fe are up by 371 pounds with AWD. Gas-powered models have curb weights of 4,343 pounds for front-wheel drive and 4,486 pounds for AWD. Hybrids have curb weights of 4,431/4,575 pounds FWD/AWD. Also, in 2024, the 17.7-gallon fuel tank will be the same for gas or hybrid models.

The heavier model challenged fuel economy ratings. The 2025 gas-powered, front-drive Santa Fe has fuel economy ratings of 20/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined. (That compares to 22/28/25 mpg in 2023.) AWD models have mileage ratings of 20/28/23 mpg, compared to 21/28/24 mpg for 2023.

The Santa Fe Hybrid is the mileage all-star. FWD models have mileage estimates of 36/35/36 mpg, and AWD models return mileage of 35/34/34 mpg. The 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid AWD has mileage ratings of 33/30/32 mpg.

All Santa Fe models use 87-octane fuel. Fill the 17.7-gallon tank for about 578 miles of range.

Even with the new square-jaw mug, the new Santa Fe has sleeker aerodynamics for a 0.294 drag coefficient vs. 0.33 cd in previous hybrid models. Active air flaps in the grille close for aerodynamics or open for engine cooling.

A view of the front 20 inch tire and black wheel. The tire is 10 inches wide!~

Santa Fe Hybrid models have 20-inch all-season tires with a 10-inch wide footprint.

Hybrid Performance

There is enough fuel-saving functionality in Hyundai’s hybrid system to dissuade some buyers from the added cost of a plug-in system.

Depending on driving conditions, the hybrid system will operate between the engine and the electric motor or both at the same time. The high-voltage hybrid battery drives the motor and air conditioner. The hybrid battery with the 12-volt battery (under the cargo floor) operate the ignition, lights, wipers, and audio system.

I drove with normal acceleration force, always in Eco mode, and at highway speeds of 68 to 70 mph. I did not baby the system to coax miles. The standard Eco mode performance was potent when needed and was always responsive to light pedal inputs. Sport mode gave abrupt force that seemed unnecessary in daily driving.

In-town or creeping along on the commute allows a significant range on battery power. When the test vehicle was delivered from Los Angeles, it had an average mpg readout of 28.2. After a few days of in-town driving, the average progressed to 29 mpg. After two 80-mile interstate runs, the average mpg rose to 30.7. And I might have been able to push it higher had I not had to turn in the vehicle.

Calibrations for semi-autonomous driving provide consistent monitoring without sensitivity to blasting alerts. Lane centering is exact, keeping the Santa Fe between the white lines and never veered wide in my experience.

Interior Comfort and Conveniences

Major improvements to the fifth-generation Santa Fe are in seat comfort, suspension response, and soundproofing.

Front headroom is tall at 40.2 inches or 41.1 without the sunroof, and legroom is very long at 44.4 inches. A tall shoulder line at the sides creates the impression of a closed cabin. Sightlines, however, are quite functional. Side mirrors are offset from the body and a small triangle corner glass gives helpful snippets of cornering views.

The more I drove, the more comfortable I became with the side views. And when parking or backing, the 360-degree camera gives an overhead view. The turning circle is tight at 37.9 feet, especially for a vehicle that is nearly 16 feet long. I could make a U-turn on my residential street without fear of scraping the right front wheel. (A tight turning circle is a high priority in any vehicle I buy. I abhor making three- or four-point turnarounds.)

An impressive curved panoramic display links two 12.3-inch screens. One display gives driver info, speed, and mileage. The other screen groups navigation displays and connections for phones, music, and apps. Climate controls are just below on a 6.6-inch screen.

Entry to the Santa Fe is a comfortable step-in height. And the gorgeous Calligraphy seats provide full-body support without unnecessary bolstering to complicate entry and exit. The driver seat is eight-way power adjustable, with lumbar. The front passenger seat has six-way power adjustment. “Relaxation” driver and passenger seats, standard on Calligraphy, are a power-raised leg rest that might seem unnecessary until experienced. It adds thigh support, and the elevated rest is relaxing on a long drive.

Power folding second row captain's chairs have seatback recline and seat-bottom tilt.

EV Trickle-Down Design

Santa Fe’s interior spaciousness is influenced by electric vehicle cabins. For example, the center “bridge” style console has a large open space below.

The cabin design treatment is lean and light in coloration with creative metallic trim and etching treatments. There is no faux wood here. A bead of ambient lighting is masterfully integrated along the lower instrument panel. The bead kicks up at the ends to bracket the panel with more “H” elements.

A Hyundai design genius instituted the dual phone charging pads on the broad center console. The space also integrates three USB charge ports.

The two-seat third row of seats

The third row has the uncommon feature of AC fan controls with a side vent.

2nd and 3rd Row Seats

Captain’s chairs in the six-seat Calligraphy are heated and power-adjustable, including seat bottom tilt. It’s a useful function to help long legs find a comfort spot. B-pillar vents — not common to all SUVs — are helpful for air flow to those sensitive to motion.

The third row might be short on legroom (30 inches), but it is no penalty box. Passengers in the two-seat space can access rear AC fan controls with a special side vent, a charging USB, and a 115-volt, 150-watt household outlet. Side armrests have multi-use square cupholders that will fit a mug or a box of French fries.

The Santa Fe cargo area with both rows folded for about 6 ¾ feet in length

Fold both rows for about 6 ¾ feet in length.

Liftgate entry is now 50.2 inches wide, or 5.7 inches wider than before. Fold both rows of seats for about 6.75 feet long with a 32-inch entry height. In seven-passenger configurations, the contiguous flat space could be used for sleeping.

Fold the third row for flat and square space of 40.5 cubic feet (stacked to the headliner).

However, the dang power liftgate opens when walking slowly behind the vehicle. Once it begins opening, you’ll have to wait until it opens far enough to hit the close switch. Oddly, the liftgate can be opened, but the system does not unlock the side doors at the same time.

Rear AC fan controls in the third row area.

Rear AC controls are a smart and uncommon addition for humans or pet transport.

Hybrid’s Ride and Handling

Santa Fe Calligraphy models are attractively dressed in 20- or 21-inch tires. Gas models roll with 21-inch 245/45 tires. Hyundai says hybrids are on 20-inch 255/45 tires for efficiency.

Pirelli Scorpion touring tires on the tester have a substantial footprint of just over 10 inches wide. Powering hot into an exit loop can bring a smile when the driver might be expecting lean and heave. The Hybrid tracked confidently through the turn.

The tires are “electric vehicle tuned” and designed for “Severe Snow Service.” Replacements will run around $400 per tire, not including stems, installation, etc. The good, however, is that the tires have a treadwear rating of 500 and a warranty of 50,000 miles. However, the tires’ tough formulation for extended range is not hard or harsh on the Santa Fe Hybrid.

Combined with Hyundai’s E-Ride suspension, the Santa Fe Hybrid has a carpet-comfortable ride. Struts and shock absorbers electronically adjust damping to the vehicle’s pitch and angle. The immediate action soften impacts and provides support in cornering. E-Ride is less complex than an air suspension and gives more consistent damping and control.

"Chauffeur" seat control on the front passenger seatback.

Helpful back seat features include bag hooks, “chauffeur” seat controls, and seatback USB ports.

Observations and Considerations

Unnecessary cost items:

  • Carpeted floor mats $210;
  • Roller cargo cover $190;
  • Roof rack cross bars $349. Hyundai provides standard roof side rails but leaves the owner to pay for cross bars. Not all owners plan to use the rails and crossbars, which generate wind noise in the cabin. But for a $50,000 vehicle, shouldn’t cross bars, floor mats, and a roller cover be included?

For the $50K Calligraphy, there should also be door lock-unlock sensors on the rear side doors.

Santa Fe NHTSA Recalls

Thousands of Hyundai owners registered complaints about excessive oil consumption in the 2.5 L Theta and Gamma engine families. Those years cover at least from 2015 to 2023 in various models, including Santa Fe. However, thousands of owners had no engine issues.

According to Miles Johnson, senior product relations manager, Hyundai had an entire team working on the Theta II engine issues. One remedy was to offer new engines to some owners. However, he said there was a “bandwagon effect” of people trying to get new engines. There were instances of abuse, such as engine oil that had not been changed in 30,000 miles.

The second-generation Theta II and Gamma II engines have been updated to their third generation, III.

The root cause of the engine problem, he said, was determined to be “flash” in the manifold during production, which been corrected. Santa Fe online forums also cite valve ports that were not drilled out all the way. Follow up at SantaFeForums.

Fortunately, Johnson said, “We haven’t seen anything [problems] on the new Santa Fe. Theta II issues are behind us, but that’s not to say that there aren’t some out there that need to be replaced,” Johnson said.

2024 Santa Fe Recalls

There are two recalls (so far) for the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe.

No. 1: Air bag deployment issues. Hyundai has recalled 49,719 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid SUVs due to potential air-bag issues. The main floor wiring harness might be damaged, causing the air bags to deploy unexpectedly or fail to deploy in a crash. Owner notification letters were mailed Aug. 22, 2024. Dealers will inspect and repair the wiring harness for free.

No. 2: Transmission control unit software error. A software error in the transmission control unit may cause the vehicle to roll away when in Park.

To check if your vehicle has outstanding recalls, use the VIN search at NHTSA.gov/recalls.

Why Buy the 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid?

Styling, interior refinement, and fuel economy will be the big sellers for the Santa Fe Hybrid. The price difference between gas and hybrid models is less than $1,000. The eye-opening hybrid difference in fuel economy is 13 mpg more than ICE.

With care and regular maintenance, the Santa Fe Hybrid could outlive its factory warranties.

BY MARK MAYNARD

The Buick Envista tooling past me on the highway was a glint of whoa-what-is-that? Its fastback shape looked European. It looked aspirational. It looked expensive. I changed lanes for a better look. Why do I not know this car, looking so smart in its pearlescent metallic white?

This new-for-2024 Envista “sport coupe crossover” is the smallest Buick and the first Buick to adopt the brand’s new design language. It carries over some styling elements of the compelling Wildcat EV concept.

The Buick Wildcat EV concept.

Buick’s sex-jet Wildcat EV concept.

The 2024 Envista is a new Buick nameplate and a comfortable fit as a subcompact-plus small SUV. It is a corporate GM platform partner with the Chevrolet Trailblazer. However, the big separator of these GM SUVs is Envista’s distinctive styling and Buick’s more premium interior treatment.

Competing five-seat subcompact SUVs include the Chevrolet Trax, Mazda CX-30, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and Volkswagen Taos. While most competitors have a powertrain option for all-wheel-drive, the Envista is strictly front-wheel drive. However, Buick’s other subcompact SUV, the Buick Encore GX, does have an AWD option.

Buick has structured an E nameplate series: Envista, Encore, Envision (a compact-class SUV), and Enclave (3-row, V6-powered SUV).

2024 Buick Envista Pricing

The Buick Envista is available in three trim levels, all front-wheel drive. All trims have a 137-hp turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Also standard for all trims is a single-panel digital display that combines an 8-inch screen for driver instruments and an 11-inch infotainment screen. Below is the price walk:

Preferred, $24,590. Standard features include black leatherette upholstery, 17-inch silver painted wheels, and 3 years of OnStar Remote Access.

Sport Touring, $25,690. Standard features include black leatherette upholstery with Santorini Blue stitching and ST embossed headrests, 18-inch black-painted wheels, a wrapped steering wheel, gloss black side mirrors, and body-side trim moldings.

Avenir, $29,695. Standard features include perforated leather-trimmed upholstery (in black with terracotta stitching or gray with Whisper Beige stitching), and 19-inch pearl nickel alloy wheels.

Retail manufacturer pricing includes the $1,095 freight charge from Bupyeong, Korea.

There is a choice of eight Envista paint colors, but only Summit White is a no-cost color; six hues are a $495 option. White Frost Tricoat is $1,095 but $600 for Avenir.

Today’s 2024 Envista Avenir is $31,090 with the advanced safety package, $795, and White Frost Tintcoat, $600. The advanced safety package is worthwhile for its upgrades of:

  • Adaptive cruise control;
  • Rear cross-traffic alert;
  • Lane-change alert with side blind zone alert;
  • Power, heated side mirrors with turn signals;
  • Rain sensing intermittent wipers.

Check current Buick special offers here. At publication, there was an ultra-low-mileage lease for the base Preferred trim level. The 2-year/20,000-mile lease is $219 monthly, with $3,439 due at signing.

Safety Features and Technologies

Envista safety features include six air bags (with Passenger Sensing System that automatically switches on or off the front passenger seat when no occupant is seated), front seat knee bolsters, StabiliTrak electronic stability and traction control, and hill start assist.

Safety technologies include the standard Buick Driver Confidence package of:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking;
  • Front Pedestrian Braking;
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning;
  • Forward Collision Alert;
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • IntelliBeam auto high-beam assist.

The Avenir advanced safety package, $795, adds driver assistance technologies for lane change alert with side blind zone alert, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert.

A cropped image showing LED headlights and amber LED running lights

Envista has LED exterior lighting, including those amber running lights. Headlights are below.

Interior Function

There is simple, no-stress access to getting comfortable behind the wheel. It is a position of confidence.

With its subcompact-plus size, the front-seat area of the cabin feels roomy, with broad shoulder room of 56 inches, door to door. Front headroom of 39.4 inches, without the moonroof, should fit most 6-foot drivers. A flat-bottom steering wheel improves thigh space for larger drivers. The Envista wheel has a non-leather wrap with elaborate stitching. I liked that the 9-and-3 spokes of the steering wheel have channel-changing and audio volume buttons.

Sightlines are refreshingly open over the hood and at the ellipse of the rear window. Side mirrors offset from the body add visibility when turning, and the design helps reduce wind turbulence and noise.

With a new dashboard design, there is ergonomic order and smart placement of switches and controls. Special features include a single-panel digital display that combines an 8-inch screen for driver instruments and an 11-inch infotainment screen.

Envista has a slim shift lever on the slim center console. There is not much “drop” space on the console, and cup holders are small.

Looking into the back seat of the Envista with back doors open

Max legroom of 38.7 inches seems long, but the bench is short.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

While front-seat space feels more compact class than subcompact, the back seat feels more subcompact in dimensions. Max legroom of 38.7 inches seems, but the bench is short. The flat floor accommodates three across seating to drive colleagues to lunch. There is no seatback recline, but the fixed angle is comfortable.

Duck your head when slipping into the back seat to allow for the low roof contour.

Useful back-seat amenities include:

  • Large door panel stash space with bottle slots;
  • Dual types of USB ports (A and C);
  • Wide, padded fold-down armrest with can holders.
  • The trailing arc of the fastback body takes away some height for big-box cargo capacity. However, the 20.7 cubic feet of space behind the back seat is functional for a young driver or family. The cargo area entry is about 3 feet wide, with almost 3 feet to the seatback. Fold the 60/40 back seat for up to 5 ½ feet in length.

Fold Envista’s 60/40 back seat for up to 5 ½ feet in length.

Envista Powertrain and Performance

No Sport mode, no paddle shifters, no problem (mostly).

Envista is a hustler with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. The turbocharged and direct-injected engine spins up 137 horsepower and has a usable torque of 162 lb.-ft. from 2,500-4,000 rpm. Power is sent forward through a six-speed automatic transmission.

The diminutive engine’s torque, the pulling force in the low to mid rev range, makes the engine feel more potent. Acceleration from the 1.2-liter three-cylinder is responsive away from the traffic light. However, performance lags when cruising along to keep the power underfoot. There is no Sport mode, so it takes a heavier foot for a transmission kick down. Highway cruising is competent, but anticipate your need for passing power.

Official fuel-economy ratings are 28 mpg city, 32 highway, and 30 mpg combined. Regular unleaded fuel is recommended. According to the onboard computer, my average fuel economy over the test week was 25.6 mpg with a best of 42.1 mpg.

GM uses this 1.2 liter — its smallest engine in North America — in the Buick Encore GX and Chevy Trailblazer. However, both vehicles have a slightly more powerful engine upgrade in the 155-hp 1.3-liter. This somewhat larger choice would reinforce more of Buick’s “premium” position.

“Compared to previous generations of our 1.2L Turbo engine, this version is lighter and uses fewer parts, which reduces the overall vehicle weight, increases efficiency, and creates nimble ride and handling,” said Scott McLane, lead development engineer, Buick Envista.

An open hood view of the 1.2-liter 3 cylinder engine

Envista is a hustler with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine.

Ride and Handling

Buick’s QuietTuning and active noise cancellation are rewarding technologies in this small sport-coupe SUV. Zipping along the interstate at 70 mph, conversations are comfortable without raised voice volume.

Push hard through corners, and the all-season Continental ProContact tires grip without squeals of protest. These Continentals are premium all-season touring tires with a comfortable treadwear rating of 500. The tires have a 65,000-mile limited warranty and are pricey to replace at around $250 each.

A long wheelbase (106.3 inches) helps with a settled highway ride. However, the torsion beam rear suspension transfers jolts over potholes and rough city streets.
The long wheelbase with 18- or 19-inch wheels pushes the turning circle to 38.4 feet. That span is awkwardly wide for a “subcompact” vehicle. With 17-inch wheels, the circle is a foot shorter.

The standard Buick Confidence Package includes driver-assistance technologies, such as lane-keep assist with lane departure warning.

To get full semiautonomous driving requires the Avenir Advanced Safety package, $795. It adds adaptive cruise control, including lane change alert with blind zone alert.

Always keep hands on the wheel when using this semiautonomous mode. Lane centering is not accurate and lets the Envista drift wide in interstate cornering. However, the suite of safety systems is well worth the $795.

Continental ProContact tires grip without squeals of protest.

Observations and Considerations

  1. There is a lot of black plastic throughout the cabin. The Avenir, however, is dressed up with multiple grain patterns and engaging “zicka” lines on the door panels from the dashboard. Avenir’s padded dash pad has a line of copper stitching, which continues onto the seat trim aesthetics.
  2. Power windows have an auto-down function but no auto-up, which is a silly budget issue.
  3. Visors do not slide.
  4. Front seat belts have no height adjustment; some will not like the position of the seat belt at their neck.
  5. The front passenger seat has no power adjustments. That is another compromising budget measure that detracts from “premium” for a $30,000 price.
  6. No rear wiper! Buick (and other makers saving a few dollars) seems to think that rain will blow down the rear glass while driving. However, the large back glass will still accumulate dirt and grime as it sits, and somebody will need to clean it. However, I’m not sure I would want a rear wiper because it would clutter up the gorgeous rear-end design. The shapely front end has the same dilemma when affixing a license plate to the Avenir’s attractive black-chrome ice grille treatment. (Michigan does not require a front license plate.)

BY MARK MAYNARD

The re-engineered, redesigned, and just-about-new-everything 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a formidable overachiever — luxury in a gloved fist. The new GX outdistances the previous Lexus GX in most categories, but without the V-8 engine so loved by owners.

The 2024 GX 550 is a larger SUV now with twin-turbo-V6 power and a tow rating of 9,000 pounds, or 2,500 pounds more than its predecessor. All models have full-time four-wheel drive, a limited-slip center locking differential, and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Now that Lexus dealers have the three-row, family-class TX model, Lexus could expand and enhance the GX 550 line. New for 2024 are two new Overtrail models fit for “overlanding” amid Lexus luxury.

Luxury off-roading SUVs are an oxymoron, but Lexus must see some sales-poaching opportunities. About the only GX Overtrail competition is the Land Rover Defender, an icon of mountain-goat ability with kid-glove resolve. However, the 2024 GX Overtrails have the pricing advantage, costing $70,000 to $80,000 well-equipped.

Whether for street or trail, the 2024 Lexus GX is tough looking, but the interior is calming, lux, and modern, Lexus says. There are six trim levels of pricing, four of which emphasize luxury, with seating for five, six, or seven. The Overtrail exclusively has five seats for its cargo-camping capacity.

Lexus says the GX marketing plan for the Overtrail models was to provide refined outdoor experiences. To support those experiences, Lexus created the Overtrail Project. Details are below.

It is not simple to design a husky SUV that offers luxury and off-roading dominance without compromises. As thoroughly conceived as this new GX is, there are a few missed opportunities.

Eight-way power driver’s seat in the GX Overtrail+ has extendable thigh support.

Eight-way power driver’s seat has extendable thigh support.

A Pre-Production Note

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ test vehicle was a pre-production model. Lexus says it is representative of a final production model. Or, as manufacturers will say, “If you like it, it’s production. If you don’t like it, it’s pre-production.”

The tester had accumulated 6,300 miles, which indicates it had extensive journalist evaluations. All the elements of the test vehicle looked to be at the production level. The interior assembly had precise fit and appealing finishes. All exterior body panels were well-aligned and secure.

In The Beginning

The first-generation GX entered the North American market in 2002. It would become a successful off-road racer in demanding events like the Baja 500.

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a completely new vehicle built on Toyota’s GA-F platform. It underpins body-on-frame Lexus and Toyota vehicles, including the Lexus LX 600, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Tacoma and Tundra pickups.

The 14-inch touchscreen display with Lexus Interface.

Comparing 2024 with 2023 GX

I tested the top-line 2024 GX 550 Overtrail+. It is not built on a namby-pamby unibody frame but a lightweight ladder frame. The truck-style frame increases body rigidity, crucial to withstand twisting off-road forces. The suspension capably manages the Overtrail+ curb weight of 5,675-5,705 pounds (depending on options) and its tow rating of 9,063 pounds.

With toughness comes size. Compared to the previous Lexus GX, the 2024 model has a wheelbase 2.4 inches longer, now at 112.2 inches. The GX body is 3.8 inches wider, now at 78 inches or 78.4 with the Overtrail’s fender overriders. Body length is almost 5 inches longer, at 197.05 inches. The GX stands taller by 1.39 inches, or almost 2 inches taller for Overtrail models. The wheel track is wider, too, by almost 3 1/4 inches, benefiting a secure driving stance.

Inside, there is more head and legroom throughout. Front shoulder room grew by 4 inches.

While the Lexus GX and Toyota Land Cruiser are platform partners, there are decisive separators. The Toyota is available only with a 326-hp, 2.4-liter i-Force Max hybrid four-cylinder engine. The powertrain has 465 foot-pounds of torque at a low 1,700 rpm, full-time four-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Land Cruiser went on sale Aug. 1, 2024. Available in three trim levels, starting prices range from $56,000 to $75,000 for the First Edition model.

2024 Lexus GX 550 Pricing

GX shoppers can choose from six trim levels: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and the new Overtrail and Overtrail+. Starting retail prices range from $64,250 to $77,250 for today’s review of the top-line GX 550 Overtrail+.

Suggested manufacturer starting prices include the $1,350 freight charge from the Tahara plant in Japan. The GX is built there with the Land Cruiser Prado and Toyota 4Runner.

With a few options, the test GX 550 Overtrail+ was an $81,000 commitment to exploring the outdoors. Standard features above the GX 550 Overtrail ($69,250) include:

  • Intuitive parking assist with auto braking and rear pedestrian detection;
  • Power rear door with kick sensor;
  • Front massaging seats.

All standard and optional features are highlighted in the specs chart at the end of this review.

Safety Features and Technologies

Among the standard GX 550 safety features, with 10 air bags, is the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. Its advanced technologies include:

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection — PCS. Using a camera and millimeter-wave radar, the pre-collision system can help detect and alert to a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist. If the driver does not react, the system can use automatic emergency braking between 7 and 110 mph.

Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist. Emergency maneuvers get an additional steering boost to prevent lane departure between 25-50 mph.

Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking. If turning left in front of an oncoming vehicle, the system will issue a warning alert followed by automatic braking. This feature is functional only during daylight hours.

Emergency Driving Stop System — EDSS. If the system detects no driver input for some time, audible warnings will alert the driver. If the driver does not respond, the system will slow the vehicle to a stop, keeping it safely in the lane. EDSS only operates when driving on expressways with DRCC and LTA activated.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist — LDA w/SA. Functional above 32 mph, LDA w/SA will issue audible and visual alerts if an inadvertent lane departure is detected. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system will initiate gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance.

Proactive Driving Assist — PDA. Using the vehicle’s camera and radar, PDA monitors distance control between a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. The system will engage gentle braking and steering into curves as needed.

GX Overtrail Interior Function

The GX front seats are in command position, comfortable for hours. In the Overtrail+, the driver gets the added benefit of an eight-way power seat with an extendable cushion. However, the front passenger seat has only six-way power, and the cushion is not long enough for leggy occupants. For $80,000, the front passenger should be treated better.

The upright windshield and side mirrors offset from the body provide wide-open views. Access to all controls is finger-reach simple, with a functional presentation of digital and manual controls.

The GX has an expansive hood, but its size is minimized by the two slightly raised channels over the fenders and tires. The lower flat plain between the fender channels benefits improved visibility. When off-roading, the raised channels help the driver see where the tires are and where to place them.

The wide center infotainment screen is not prone to glare and is equally visible to both front passengers.

Headroom with the Overtrail’s standard moonroof is 39.4 inches. Delete the moonroof, and head space gains a couple of inches to 41.7 inches. The moonroof is irrelevant for Overlanders who travel with a loaded roof rack, allowing the $1,100-delete to be applied elsewhere.

Cargo entry is broad at 45 inches by 42 inches deep to the back seat.

Back Seats and Cargo Space

Step-in access to the back seat is a little tight and narrow. If the doors opened wider, it would facilitate child-seat access and gear loading. Legroom is good at a max 36.7 inches if tall people are not sitting up front.

The manual lever for the fold-and-tumble back seats could use some refinement for ease of use.

GX cargo space is big and square, 45 inches wide at the tailgate opening. Boxy gear is easily loaded and secured with 36 inches from floor to headliner.

Fold the 60/40 back seat for 5 feet in length. However, the expanded cargo space is not a contiguous flat space, such as for sleeping. There is about a 3-inch dip in the floor under the back seats. Some type of filler pad will be needed to fill the void for comfortable sleeping.

A tonneau cover is $110? For an $80,000 specialized luxury off-roading SUV, a tonneau cover should be standard equipment. The roller cover keeps eyes off the cargo contents, whether at the mall or on the trail.

Powertrain and Performance

For 2024 in the U.S., the standard powertrain in the GX is a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed direct-shift automatic Transmission.

Lexus says the 349-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 outperforms the previous generation V-8, with 301-hp Torque output—towing grunt—also rising to a substantial 479 lb.-ft. from 2,000-3,600 rpm. Compare that to the previous GX 460, with 329 lb.-ft. at 3,500 rpm.

Performance around town can be strong in Normal and Sport modes. Eco mode is too hand-wringing cautious for me.

Fuel economy ratings are essentially the same as before: 15 mpg city, 21 highway, and 17 mpg combined, a 1 mpg highway boost. As before, maximum power requires premium fuel.

When the GX tester was delivered to my San Diego home, the average mileage rating was 15.1 mpg. That was after the 100-mile drive from Orange County, near Long Beach. The mileage did not get much better. During my test week, I took two 80-mile roundtrips and a shorter highway drive of around 75 miles. With that much highway driving, using Eco or Normal modes, the average mpg rose just to 15.5 mpg.

With my average mpg, the 21.4-gallon fuel tank in GX 550 would provide a driving range of around 330 miles. The Land Rover Defender has a 23.8-gallon tank — and every dollar and gallon matters when heading to the backcountry.

Lexus says a GX hybrid powertrain will be available in the U.S. at a later date but gives no details. Could it be the engine in the 2024 Land Cruiser?

GX towing capacity is much improved for 2024, now up to 8,000 pounds for Premium and Premium+ models. Overtrail models have tow ratings up to 9,096 pounds, with a standard tow hitch. The previous GX had a tow rating of 6,500 pounds.

Ride and Handling

It is big and blunt, but the GX 550 delivers a remarkably comfortable and soundproofed ride. The cabin is so well soundproofed that highway tire noise is minimal from the 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires. A full-size spare cranks down from under the cargo area.

One of the overachieving skills of the GX 550 Overtrail models is the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. E-KDSS is an elaborate hydraulic system that adjusts front and rear stabilizers for consistent control. The setup of two two-way hydraulic cylinders keeps fluid moving front to rear. Sensors in the electronic circuit respond to the side-to-side and ups and downs of trail driving, and lumpy city streets. The stabilizer bars unlock for long wheel travel when off-roading. When one cylinder reacts by compressing, the other cylinder releases. Greater wheel travel increases traction by keeping the tire in contact with the trail, ruts, or sand runs. When driving on-road, the hydraulic cylinders keep the stabilizer bars fixed, allowing the bars to twist as normal to tame body roll.

Once a system used on Toyota off-road vehicles, E-KDSS is now an exclusive Lexus technology.

Lexus also says the GX adopts electronic power steering, adding increased steering feel on and off-road. The steering weight is light and responsive to small inputs. When off-road, its steering finesse is an asset when navigating a rutted or narrow track when inches matter.

However, a wide turning circle of 42 feet is a liability on a trail or at the mall. Sure, there is enough locking-differential traction to make a five-point turn on a trail, but at what cost to dragging along the greenery? Four-wheel steering would chop the turning circle by a few feet and make everybody happy at Tread Lightly.

GX as Off-Road Chaperone

With all of the electronic driver-assistance technologies, novice Overtrail riders have a nurturing guide. However, an experienced trail-driving friend would be helpful to point out what not to do.

A Torsen limited-slip locking center differential is standard on all GX models to harness the traction capabilities. The locking diff is necessary for traction in low grip situations, splitting engine power 50:50 front for a steady pull.

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ add an electronic locking rear differential engaged by a console-mounted switch. Locking the differential splits the power evenly between the left and right rear wheels to help the wheels turn at the same speed.

Other Overtrail assets include:

Crawl Control. This electronic low-range traction system operates in five driver-selected speeds, forward or reverse.

Downhill Assist Control. The semi-automated system works with the braking system to control slippage and prevent the brakes from locking. This assistance helps drivers focus on steering and scanning ahead for hazards without applying the brakes or downshift.

Hill-Start Assist Control. HAC prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped on an incline, whether off-road or on the street. Sensors detect when the vehicle is on a hill and automatically apply the brakes for about two seconds.

Multi-Terrain Assist. The electonic transfer case’s traction control system can switch between high range (H4) and low range (L4). L4 has four modes: Auto, Sand, Mud, and Rock. H4 has five modes: Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow.

Multi-Terrain Monitor. Four cameras transpose images underfloor, front, side, and rearview, displayed on the panoramic view monitor. The underview is especially useful when off-roading.

Standard triple-beam LED headlamps.

Standard triple-beam LED headlamps have positioned higher to help avoid potential road impacts.

Observations and Considerations

Four-wheel steering. With a 42-foot turning circle, the GX 550 Overtrail+ has the grunt and traction to make five-point turnarounds on a woods trail. But at what cost to trampling the greenery? An option for four-wheel steering would be worth the price. And it would provide a better in-town parking experience.

More stash space! Off-roaders bring a lot of stuff into the vehicle’s cab. There are maps, guidebooks, gloves, a tire gauge, binoculars, and plenty of snacks. However, small-item storage is lacking in the GX 550. The door panel slots are narrow, and the center transmission console is huge and broad but has barely any space except for cup holders. There is an unnecessarily elaborate, covered slot for the 12-volt plug, which takes up valuable space. The optional Cool Box ($170) in the armrest console is smallish, with space for four small beverage bottles and a few energy bars. Cooled by AC, the insulated box is inadequate as a cooler or storage space.

Running boards fail. The GX has standard step-aboard rails that complicate ease of entry and exit. The running boards are positioned rearward and are not particularly helpful when loading the roof rail. The boards also restrict getting close to secure children into second-row child seats. When off-roading, running boards compromise trail clearance. Installing an aftermarket electric step rail would be better. These fold up after climbing aboard and automatically deploy when exiting the vehicle.

For those who use the roof rails, a handy aftermarket doorstep hooks into the door latch point. There are many choices online, and most have a weight rating of 400 pounds. Pricing ranges from $10 to $50 a step.

Lexus Overtrail Project

Lexus has introduced the Overtrail Project to explore nature through refined adventures. The project’s goals include new products, accessories, gear, and experiences. Learn more here.

Accessories for Turn Key Overtrail Experience

With dozens of outfitting choices, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail owner can hit the “Add” button to be (mostly) expedition-ready.

The Lexus off-roading accessories are of quality brands, but owners can shop for lower prices at aftermarket sites. However, a winch is not among the accessories. Loading up on the GX Overtrail accessories includes a Lexus warranty, which can be financed with the vehicle.

Find Lexus accessories at Associated Accessory Parts Program.

Rock Rails: $990. If you will be bashing down the Rubicon Trail, these rock rails will help protect the lower rocker panels. However, I have also seen rock rails torn off long-wheelbase vehicles on the way down.

Roof Rack $1,580. And the rack is useless without the optional cross bars, $560

ARB Premium Recovery Kit $526. Essential tools include:

  • Tree trunk protector;
  • Snatch strap, snatch block and bow shackles;
  • ARB snatch strap;
  • ARB snatch block to increase the tow winch capacity and facilitate winching from varying angles;

ARB Twin Portable Compressor $1,012. Serious off-roading requires an air compressor, portable or hard-wired to the vehicle (my preference). ARB does not cite what size tires this portable unit can handle. I expect it is intended for the 33s on the GX 550 Overtrail+.

ARB Air Compressor Pump Up Kit $114. Add this kit for its 20-foot air hose to air up after a trail run. The kit includes quick couplings and a T-junction for connecting an air check and pressure switch.

ARB TRED Pro $370, in red or gun-metal gray. Don’t leave home without these treads for lost traction in sand, mud, or snow. And ARB TRED Pro Mounting Kit $102.

Why Buy the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+?

Who knew there were Lexus GX owners serious about off-grid travel? And why would GX owners subject the hand-rubbed paint of their pricey SUV to trail pinstriping? Will Lexus field a team for the Rebelle Rally? Will Lexus participate in the Overland Expos?

Only time will answer those questions. According to Automotive News, Lexus believes it can sell roughly 33,000 GX models in the U.S. in 2024. That tally puts the 2024 GX only slightly ahead of the 31,910 sold last year.

For now, the GX 500 Overtrail+ is a beefy, body-on-frame truck. In some respects, it has more in common with a Toyota than the luxury of a Lexus. However, there are valuable separators in Lexus warranty coverages, destinations by Lexus properties, and the kinder, gentler treatment at the dealership.

For those who still prefer the vault-like qualities of the previous Toyota Land Cruiser, they are still available in the Lexus LX 600.
