The Kia Seltos is a small SUV crossover with big ambition. With a name derived from “Celtos” — the son of Hercules in Greek mythology — the Seltos is an overachiever in its class. It is a cargo-carrying Olympian for the young family. The Seltos cabin has uncommonly tall headroom, the interior design is contemporary with an impressive panoramic display as the centerpiece. But as much as Seltos gives, it also takes from long-term reward in its spartan ride and missed opportunities.

Kia says that the Seltos is aimed at millennials and “youthful, tech-savvy buyers” looking for a vehicle that stands out. But every automaker seeks that buyer for its small utility vehicles. And Seltos has formidable competition in the Chevrolet Trax and Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX 30, Nissan Kicks, and Subaru Crosstrek.

Besides battery-electric models (two) or the Carnival MPV (minivan), Kia has seven SUVs and crossover-type utility vehicles. The choices range from the subcompact Rio to the hybrid-powered Niro to the Sportage small SUV, the boxy Soul (also with an EV version), and the large Telluride.

Of Kia’s 12-vehicle lineup, Seltos slots between the Kia Soul and compact Sportage SUV. Seltos is a top seller for the brand, typically ranking fifth in monthly sales. Among Kia’s total February 2024 sales, Seltos contributed 4,766 — which is why Kia put the Seltos through a major midcycle update just three years after its debut in 2020 for the 2021 model year.

What Was Updated for 2024?

A midcycle “refresh” of the 2024 Kia Seltos gave this large-subcompact SUV crossover a more commanding presence inside and out, Kia says.

Exterior Changes and Additions

  • A larger “Tiger Nose” grille emphasizes vehicle width;
  • Projection LED headlamps bookend the grille;
  • Star Map signature lighting across the front grille creates a recognizable first impression;
  • Rigid shapes on the front bumper present a more confident and rugged stance;

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

FCA — Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection: This system detects oncoming vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists under certain conditions. If the system detects that a collision might be likely, it may apply the brakes to help prevent a collision or lessen its effects.

BCW — Blind Spot Collision Warning: Detects vehicles in the next lane. If the system detects a vehicle in its blind spot, it will issue an audible and visual warning when using the turn signal (standard on the S trim and up).

ISLA and ISLW—Intelligent Speed Limit Assist and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning: Using GPS data and smart cruise control, the system detects speed-limit signs with a forward-facing camera. The posted speed limit is displayed in the driver gauge cluster, and if it is exceeded, the digital display icon will turn red and blink. If adhering to the posted speed is annoying, an offset of 5 to 10 mph can be set in vehicle settings.

2024 Kia Seltos Pricing

The large-subcompact Kia Seltos is sold in five trim levels of LX, S, EX, X-Line, and SX. Entry-level front-wheel-drive models have the standard 146-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and continuously variable automatic transmission. X-Line and SX have a 195-hp 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, eight-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive.

Starting prices range from $25,865 for the front-wheel-drive Seltos LX to $30,165 for the Seltos X-Line with all-wheel drive and $31,465 for the SX with AWD. Pricing includes the $1,375 freight charge from Gwangju, Korea.

Today’s tester is the top-line SX with options for Pluton Blue paint with black roof, $395, and carpeted floor mats, $175. With those options, the Seltos SX tester came to $32,035.

Add the only other available factory package, the Sunroof package, which costs $1,200 and includes the smart power tailgate (kick-opening), ventilated front seats, and digital Key 2 Touch. The price is still manageable at $33,200.

Standard SX features include: 18-inch alloy wheels, projection LED headlights and fog lights, Bose audio system, sport steering wheel, cargo cover, electric parking brake, rearview monitor, power (heated) side mirrors with LED turn signal.

Standard Seltos features

Even the base trim level of Seltos is rich in convenience features. Among them: 10.25-inch dual panoramic displays with touchscreen navigation; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability; wireless phone charger; SynTex seat upholstery; leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel and shift lever; 60/40 split-folding back seat; dual-level cargo floor and cargo cover; Kia Connect, LED projection headlights and fog lights, sound-absorbing windshield glass, and illuminated sun visor vanity mirrors.

Powertrains and Performance

Entry Seltos models are powered by a 146-horsepower, non-turbocharged 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle (for fuel economy) four-cylinder engine and an “Intelligent” continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive fuel economy ratings are 28/34/31 mpg city/highway/combined and 27/31/29 with AWD, with the recommended 87 octane fuel.

The sportier X-Line and SX trim levels have standard all-wheel drive and more horsepower. The new gasoline-direct injection (GDI) four-cylinder engine has 195 hp — an increase of 20 horsepower over the outgoing model. A new eight-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Mileage estimates for the 2024 EX and SX are 25/30/27 mpg city/highway/combined.

Seltos SX Performance

The 1.6-liter turbocharged engine has a hearty peak torque of 195 lb.-ft. from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. But it is a hesitant start off until the turbo catches a breath and spools the power. The “turbo lag” might also be compounded by the full-time all-wheel drive system.

However, get hard on the gas, and the acceleration can be neck-snapping quick. I learned to use a heavier foot on the accelerator to push through the turbo lag, and I’d always slap the shifter into sport mode. It gives just enough snap to keep me out of trouble.

My week of testing returned a peak average fuel economy of 24 to 25 mpg around town and just reaching 27.2 with a mix of highway driving. I was expecting more mpgs after 115 miles of driving, but the official mileage estimates are within an mpg or two of the competing four-wheel-drive competition. Dynamax Full-Time All-Wheel Drive

Seltos is unique among its competitors for its locking center differential and Dynamax full-time AWD. Sensors monitor road conditions and distribute power to the appropriate wheels to control wheel slip. New for 2024 is a center locking differential that can split power equally between the front and rear wheels.

The driver-activated Lock Mode adds low-speed traction in poor road conditions, which should help the Seltos plow through inclement weather and light off-road driving. Key to the effectiveness of the AWD system is torque vectoring. This electronic calibration increases traction by predicting which wheel will best utilize power. Vectoring enhances stability in corners and contributes to more control in evasive handling.

Only the Seltos SX model includes all the Level II semi-autonomous driving features, such as highway-driving assist, smart cruise control with stop-and-go, and forward collision assist with cyclist detection.

The tester’s semi-autonomous drive experience is well-calibrated to center the Seltos in the lane while making fluid course corrections. The system sensors were not overly sensitive to varying daylight conditions and shadows, which have caused frequent cancellations in some systems I have tested.

Kia’s system gives the driver the immediate benefit of more watchful eyes on the road without continual beeps, bonks, and random alerts. But the system will sound the pay-attention alert when the driver is about to do something reckless.

Always keep both hands on the wheel when using a driver-assist system, even though Kia’s system was forgiving of one-handed driving.

Seltos SX AWD Ride and Handling

Engineering a tall and small SUV for sporty-driving attributes can result in a stiffer ride that isn’t easy to tame, and Seltos is not alone in this conflict.

Front-drive Seltos models use a torsion-beam rear suspension, which is less heavy and less expensive than a multi-link with lower mounting points that improve cargo space, but the ride quality is not always smooth.

The AWD models are uprated with an independent rear multi-link for more flexibility and wheel travel when driving off-road. The balance of spring rates and shock absorbers feels like a disconnect. Navigating lumpy and undulating roads, the Seltos has some wobble and lift. That unsettling sensation is likely due to the tall gap of air space between the top of the tire and the fender.

Between the relatively long wheelbase (103.5 inches) and the independent rear end, the ride quality is steady on the highway (not choppy). However, hold on for big head-toss when transitioning speed bumps or turning into driveways. Evasive maneuvers were not scary, and the Seltos snapped confidently back in line.

Braking for the 1.6 Turbo is beefier than expected with 12-inch ventilated front rotors and solid 11.2-inch rear rotors. Seltos trims with the 2.0-liter models have brake rotors of 11 inches front, 10.3 inches rear.

The Seltos SX is fitted with 18-inch grand touring Kumho Majesty 9 Solus tires on attractive alloy wheels. The tires (235/45) do not make the Seltos feel agile, and they are of an above-medium hardness for a 560 treadwear rating. But the tires wear like iron with a 45,000-mile treadwear warranty. Replacement tires run around $170 each, per TireRack.com.

Seltos Interior Function

Seltos makes the most of its cabin space. Headroom without the sunroof is a tall 40 inches, with 38.4 inches of hat space in the back seat. For a small, upright vehicle, front legroom is considerable (for a small vehicle) at 41.4 inches, and the back seat is roomy with 38 inches of legroom.

Interior décor is contemporary and clean. There are several textures to the black plastic, from piano black to matte, and lizard-belly pebbly. There are several areas of small-item storage, including the front center console armrest (sliding) with a storage box below.

The driver area is laid out to make it easy to find buttons and switches. There is a nice big driver’s footrest, and the flat-bottom steering wheel helps with thigh space. However, cornering views are complicated by the windshield pillars at the broad base of the side mirrors. The view can block pedestrians entering crosswalks.

The multi-way power driver seat, including lumbar support, is desirable. However, the passenger gets just four-way manual adjustment. Why not give the passenger a six-way manually adjusted seat with height adjustment?

Unnecessarily “sporty” front seats are wedgie-inducing from prominent bolsters. It won’t be long before the Syn-Tex upholstery shows that wear.

Back Seats and Cargo Space

The sculpted back seat window seats provide acceptable small adult thigh support with a comfortable seatback angle. But the perched center position is no place I would buckle up a child for even a short ice cream run. With such a family emphasis on small SUVs, why can’t the back seat be more of a legitimate three-across bench?

The center rear air vents are an asset. There are grab handles above all doors and two fast-charge USB ports. The fold-down armrest has can holders, and the doors have bottle storage.

Cargo space is a Seltos selling point for its dual-level floor. The cargo entry is wide at 43 inches, the entry height is a tall 35 inches (with the lower cargo floor), and 34 inches deep to the rear seatback. Fold the 60/40 back seat for 5 ½ feet in length.

Observations and Considerations

MSRP. Kia judiciously set the starting suggested retail prices for the 2024 Seltos line. Despite all the enhancements for 2024, the three more expensive trim levels decreased in price. Comparing 2023 pricing, the 2024 Seltos LX is just $175 more, and the Seltos S went up by $375. Seltos EX pricing was trimmed by $2,075. The 2023 Nightfall (now X-Line) and the Seltos SX dropped by $75. (The freight charge from Korea went up $50 to $1,375.)

No parking sensors? With all of Seltos’s driver-assistance features, where is this simple alert system when pulling into a parking space?

Windshield glare. In bright sunshine, a broad portion of the dashboard at the center speaker reflects into the glass and can be distracting.

No seat memory presets? For a $32K vehicle, seat presets are an asset for the couple who share daily driving duties. If the Seltos driver can choose from five digital gauge presentations, why not also have electronic seat presets?

Lack of adventure features. For those who will use their Seltos X-Line or SX in the adventurous way it is intended, the spare is just a temporary donut spare, not a full-size temporary. That could be an issue while off-roading. And there is no 110-volt household outlet or 12-volt plug in the cargo area for using an inflator for tires, chargers, or toys. But there is a 180-watt 12-volt plug in the e-bin.

Why Buy the 2024 Kia Seltos?

In its urban-suburban environment, the Kia Seltos is a Trojan workhorse.

This trusty little SUV fits the old English quote, “Jack of all trades, master of none, though oftentimes better than master of one.” The Seltos will be a good fit for a young family, a ride-share entrepreneur, and drivers wishing to downsize. For those who need all-wheel drive, the Dynamax full-time system with center locking differential is an asset in winter or getting to the backcountry cabin.

Though Seltos is well armed with driver-protecting assistance technologies, it would not be my choice as a long-distance daily commuter — but a 20-gallon fuel tank could change my mind.

At $32,000 for the as-tested Kia Seltos SX, shoppers have a choice. For another $2,000, the larger Kia Sportage SX ($34,065) has all the features of the as-tested Seltos SX, and they move into a bigger vehicle. Otherwise, the Seltos X-Line — $30,165, with AWD — might be the value option.

The 2024 Toyota Crown is one of the most pleasurable hybrid sedans I have driven — and I did not expect to like it. The Crown exterior looked awkward in photos, as if it was built for an EV skateboard platform (think Mustang Mach-E). The design treatment has some SUV influences in the fender overriders and black center swipe along the lower body.

The body styling is fast, like a sport sedan. It has a slightly elevated ride height, standard on-demand all-wheel drive, and expansive trunk-cargo capacity. But do these fundamentals define the Crown as a sport-utility car? A crossover? A hybrid of both? After a couple of hundred miles on a bonding drive, what it is did not matter.

The Crown feels luxurious in a sturdy and durable experience. The premium quality and varied textures of interior materials are not the Toyota of old. Nor are the Crown’s thorough soundproofing and road-smoothing suspension.

Top off the 14.2-gallon tank with 87 octane, queue the Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles),” then engage the advanced cruise control and settle in for nearly 600 miles. With care, a driver can expect up to 41 mpg on the highway.

In the Toyota car lineup, Crown takes the slot where the Avalon flagship sedan held court from 1995 until it was discontinued in 2022.

However, Toyota already has at least nine hybrid models in its lineup, including the midsize Camry Hybrid sedan. Two of those gasoline-electric hybrids are plug-ins, and there is one battery electric, the bZ4X. But not one of those electrified Toyotas is anything like the 2024 Crown.

The Reimagined Large Sedan

Built on Toyota’s rigid GA-K platform, Crown makes a bold entry with its hammerhead front end, the Kitana-like slice of LED headlights, and an elevated stance 19-inch or 21-inch wheels; Toyota says those 21s are the largest ever on one of its sedans.

It seems risky to re-enter the now-gone mainstream segment of large-midsize sedans, like Toyota’s Avalon and the Acura RDX, Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300, Kia 900, or Nissan Maxima. But there is a reason for this graveyard of greats.

With ever-increasing fuel economy and emissions regulations levied on sedans, manufacturers tried to beat the system with harder tires, lower ride heights, and lower rooflines for aerodynamics. The interior width was carved out slightly, but the cabin space felt cramped for the taller American motorist. The low ride height was uncomfortable for entry and exit, and sporty exterior styling often compromised sightlines. The final blow was pricing, sometimes $5,000 to $10,000 more than the midsize sedan in the lineup.

Now, enter the Crown sedan. It has all the elements stripped away from sedans to meet mileage standards. Crown has open sightlines, a higher hip entry point requiring no duck-and-drop, and tall headroom even with the panoramic roof. Switches, window lifts, and climate-control tabs are clearly marked and in easy reach. Better yet, there is no annoying touchscreen display to tap, tap, tap in search of a category. Everything the driver needs is designed for head-up driving.

I grew to like the exterior styling — and several passersby were compelled to praise the Crown’s strong stance and the 21-inch tire and wheel package.

Toyota Crown History

The 2024 Toyota Crown nameplate lacks prestige — or sexiness — in North America, but the model is rich in Toyota history.

According to the Crown page on Wikipedia, the nameplate was introduced in 1955 as the Toyopet Crown. “It holds the distinction of being the longest-running passenger-car nameplate affixed to any Toyota model.”

The Crown is also the seventh longest-running model nameplate in the world after the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (1954), Chevrolet Corvette (1953), Toyota Land Cruiser (1951), Volkswagen Transporter (1950), Ford F-Series (1947), and Chevrolet Suburban (1935).

Here’s another bit of trivia, also from Wikipedia. The Crown nameplate continues a Toyota tradition of naming their sedans “crown” in various languages. There are Crown, Corona, Camry, and Corolla, and there are names for types of crowns, such as Tiara, or other things associated with royalty, like Scepter.

There will be a family of Crowns, per Wikipedia, though Toyota PR would not confirm nor deny: “In 2022, Toyota [Japan] unveiled four different Crown models to replace the 15th-generation model. The first model that is available is the Crossover-type Crown, which is also marketed in North America as the sole Crown model.

The remaining three models, Sedan, Sport, and Estate, will be released in 2023 and 2024, respectively, and will be available in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fuel cell powertrains depending on the model.”

The Estate will be the upcoming Crown Signia SUV crossover. It is expected to go on sale this summer, 2024.

2024 Toyota Crown Pricing

There are three trim levels to the 2024 Toyota Crown, all with standard all-wheel drive. There are two hybrid powertrains, including the 340-hp Hybrid MAX exclusive to the Platinum model.

Crown retail pricing includes the $1,095 freight charge from Aichi, Japan.

XLE $41,445 — no option packages available;

Limited $47,045 — 1 factory option package available;

Platinum $54,465 — no factory option packages available.

Which Crown Fits You?

XLE: Well-equipped with standard features and safety technologies, the XLE has the lightest curb weight and likely will have the highest fuel economy. However, the XLE has no access to factory option packages and has a black interior with fabric upholstery.

Limited: The Crown Limited would be my choice. The hybrid performance is strong throughout the entire power band. The work commuter would also benefit from the Advanced Tech package for its panoramic view monitor and added eyes for front-cross traffic alert and Traffic Jam assistance. The 21-inch wheels also look right and contribute to a strong stance without sacrificing ride quality or noise.

Platinum: Platinum is the loaded crown jewel with its turbocharged powertrain, Adaptive Variable Suspension, and Advanced Park (for automated assist when backing into or parallel parking). I haven’t driven this model — but it should provide thoroughbred performance with 400 foot-pounds of instantly available torque. The Platinum’s only fault could be its lower mileage ratings; it is the heaviest of the trim levels at 4,343 pounds. The standard suspension is so well calibrated for balance and weight control that the real-time damping of the adaptive suspension might be unnecessary.

Crown Limited Ride and Handling

It was a good day to head to the backcountry hills of San Diego County for a long drive in the 2024 Toyota Crown Hybrid. Toyota’s Level 2 semi-autonomous drive system is accurate for lane centering without nervous alerts. It is an ideal system for rubbernecking as you tool along.

Toyota injects some secret sauce into the Crown’s steel suspension, with front MacPherson struts, a stabilizer bar, and a multilink rear with a stabilizer bar. This setup performed with luxurious compliance, the great equalizer to bad street surfaces. The Crown can step across speed bumps without a lot of head woggle and dives across intersection dips without a chin scrape. When there was a full-compression bump, the suspension never gave a bottoming-out jolt. Occasionally, I could feel side-to-side heave on unsettled turns. But the overall impression is of remarkable damping control when powering through exit ramps or evasive maneuvers.

Enabling the cornering grip are the 21-inch Michelin Primacy Tour all-season tires. These grand touring tires have a hefty footprint of 8.9 inches and did not spin up cabin noise despite an above-average treadwear (hardness) rating of 540.

Four-wheel disc brakes are appropriately sized for controlled and absolute stopping power. (Towing is not recommended for any Crown model.) Front ventilated rotors are 12.9 inches, and solid rear rotors are 12.5 inches.

Electric power steering tracks steady and is responsive to small inputs but (like most electrified steering systems) lacks road communication with the driver. A 38.8-foot turning circle is manageable in urban parking but is a couple of tenths wider than the Avalon TRD.

Powertrains and Performance

XLE and Limited trim levels have the standard gasoline-electric Toyota Hybrid System. Front and rear electric motors are integrated with a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine; it has 236 horsepower and 163 foot-pounds of torque. The transmission is an electronic continuously variable automatic. EPA-estimated mileage ratings are 42 mpg city, 41 highway, and 41 mpg combined.

Platinum gets the more powerful 340-hp, 2.4-liter turbocharged Hybrid MAX engine with a combined net torque of 400.4 lb.-ft. Its direct-shift transmission is a variant of the eCVT; it adds a launch gear for stronger off-the-line acceleration and then simulates six gear shifts. The Platinum has mileage ratings of 29/32/30 mpg.

Both electrified engines use Toyota’s D-4S direct and port fuel injection. The combination gives a more complete and clean fuel burn to prevent carbon buildup on the intake valves. Here’s a D-4S explainer.

Both Crown powertrains use a nickel-metal hydride battery pack, with power ratings of 230.4 volts and 5.0-amp hours. The Crown hybrid system includes a battery-only EV Mode, which allows driving about a half mile and up to speeds of about 20 mph, depending on the battery pack’s state of charge. With the engine’s stop-start at idle, that means the Crown creeps emissions-free in extended stop-start traffic.

The nickel-metal battery pack has one big advantage over a more densely powered (and expensive) lithium-ion battery: a nickel-metal battery will be less costly to replace should an owner keep their Crown beyond the hybrid battery warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles. And the Crown should be a keeper.

2 AWD Systems

To boost mileage, the standard hybrid system drives the Crown XLE and Limited in front-wheel drive until slippage occurs. A separate rear-mounted electric motor powers the rear wheels when the electronic on-demand AWD senses traction loss.

The Platinum model has full-time electronic AWD, and its fuel economy shows the drop in range. This new AWD system uses a front-mounted motor and rear eAxle electric motor. Depending on the driving, the system adjusts the power split between 70/30 and 20/80 front to rear. Toyota says this system has the feel of rear-wheel drive.

Crown Hybrid Performance

While both Crown engines run on 87 octane or higher, 91-octane fuel boosts performance. On premium fuel, Toyota says its Crown, with the standard hybrid system, will accelerate to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. The Hybrid Max is capable of 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The Limited’s electronic continuously variable transmission performs with fluid effort. There is some engine noise on hard acceleration, but it has a deep voice, and the rubber-banding of the eCVT is minimal, and the pickup is quick.

The eCVT has performance modes of Normal, Sport, and Eco. In my test week, I used Eco when on the highway with cruise control and Sport when in traffic to guard the gap to the vehicle ahead. Normal mode was responsive around town and would feel quite potent when pressed hard.

On paper, Crown’s fuel economy ratings are comparable to or a notch above competing small hybrid SUVs — and better than Toyota’s RAV4 Hybrid and its Venza hybrid. But Crown’s curb weight is stout at nearly 4,000 pounds, and with all-wheel drive, I could not finesse the total combined mpg to more than 36.2, according to the display in the 12.3-inch driver info array. Oddly, there was no algorithm to check instant or accumulated mileage besides a graph chart in the multimedia display.

Crown Interior Function

The Crown makes a good first impression. Its stocky steering wheel with stitched leather gives a reassuring handshake. The dual-cockpit front seat space has an appealing design.

The shift console is a fresh presentation with a vertical slot for wireless phone charging. And there is a second vertical phone slot with a pair of charging USBs.

Of course, the console integrates a pair of cup holders, and the well-padded center armrest has deep storage. Door panels have large-bottle capacity.

Toyota says Crown engineers spent countless hours studying and engineering reductions in noise, vibration, and harshness. The materials and placement were optimized to minimize noise in the frequencies that typically interfere with conversation.

Creating such a traffic-calmed cabin included acoustic glass on the front side windows, a dashboard silencer pad, and an engine cover made of acoustic absorbing materials. Noise-minimizing insulation and body sealing material are layered between the engine bay and cabin, under the carpeting, and above the headliner.

Because the cabin is so soundproofed, I noticed the noisy fan AC fan speeds and seat ventilation fans.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

Crown back seat space is more of a 2+2 layout than three across because of the tall and wide exhaust tunnel. Legroom of 38.9 inches is almost an inch and a half shorter than in the Avalon. Rear foot space is tight, too. Consequently, the seating feels more compact than midsize, and passengers will let you know. The center seat is narrow and perched with footroom splayed by the intrusive hump in the floor.

Trunk space of 15.2 cubic feet is slightly smaller than the Avalon’s 16 cu.ft. trunk. But the Crown trunk is wide (41 inches) with a low liftover. Fold the 60/40 back seat for up to 6 ½ feet in length.

Instead of a rinky-dink “tire-inflation system,” the Crown has trunk space for a full-size, 21-inch spare tire.

The 2024 Crown is a Top Safety Pick-Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The institute gives top marks of “Good” for the Crown’s crashworthiness in small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side collisions.

According to the IIHS, the standard front crash prevention system earns superior ratings in daytime and nighttime pedestrian tests. The LED projector headlights on the Limited and Platinum trims earn a good rating, while those that come with the XLE trim are rated acceptable.

Crown has not yet been tested by the National Traffic Safety Administration.

Standard Crown safety features include six air bags, blind spot alerts, lane departure accident-avoidance system, and lane keep assist. Advanced technologies in the standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.

Perusing the Toyota Crown owner’s manual, I found this nifty pyrotechnic feature: the “Pop Up Hood.” In the event of a collision with a pedestrian, the Crown packs a pair of pop-up explosive devices to raise the hood a few inches. The system satisfies a European safety regulation to improve pedestrian “survivability” in a low-speed frontal hit.

The pyrotechnic hood system is necessary because of the Crown’s sloping hood. I first saw the pop-up system in the Lexus LC convertible. The system allows a sharp angle to the hood when so many new car designs today have blunt front ends. Two explosive charges are positioned at the hood hinges.

What A Crown Owner Says

My tax preparer, Mike Hoffman, is the target buyer for the Crown.

“I had a 2020 Avalon TRD I purchased used with 2,500 miles on it through a Dodge dealership in Escondido. Picked it up for a steal at $34,000 because they could not get it sold. I sold it 2 years later for $40,000 because of the high price of used cars [during the Covid pandemic]. [The Avalon] was too low for me.”

He says he loves his Crown Limited, “but to get the good mileage, the sweet spot is between 65 to 70 mph. Also, the map and [connected multimedia] systems require a subscription fee after the first year. I was not told about this until I bought the vehicle. My Avalon’s cabin was very similar in size to the Crown, but the trunk is a little smaller.”

Why Buy the 2024 Toyota Crown?

Electric vehicles are the future of transportation. However, EVs have their own set of problems that owners must process. And for road-trip driving, the poor condition of public charging stations and lengthy charging times blunt the freedom of adventure.

As a gasoline-electric hybrid, the Crown is a super ultra-low emissions vehicle or SULEV. Its energy impact score ranks it 7 out of the top 10 for smog and greenhouse gas emissions.

If the multitude of electronic sensors hold up over time, the Toyota Crown would make a good long-term purchase, with what could be lower maintenance costs.

Toyota jeweled its Crown for a good fit with features, eager horsepower, and quality materials. $51,000, as tested, seemed like all the money for a hybrid sedan until I drove it. And then I said, $51K has value, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Indeed, there could be renewed interest from drivers who value electronic simplicity, comfort, and fuel-efficiency freedom.

Dodge has just revealed its new electrified Charger Daytona, declaring it “the World’s First and Only Electric Muscle Car.” For all the old-school Dodge Charger enthusiasts, the 2024 model will be available as a two-door coupe or four-door sedan. And for enthusiasts with gasoline in their veins, Dodge also will offer “multi-energy” powertrains for the 2024 Charger. There will be two internal-combustion engine options, including the 550-horsepower Dodge Charger SIXPACK H.O. powered by the 3.0-liter Twin Turbo Hurricane High Output engine and the 420-hp Dodge Charger SIXPACK S.O. fueled by the 3.0-liter Twin Turbo Hurricane Standard Output engine. The new Dodge Charger features standard all-wheel drive for all models.

Electrified versions of the 2024 Dodge Charger will feature the 496-hp 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T and the 670-hp Daytona Scat Pack, which can launch from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and run the quarter-mile in an estimated 11.5 seconds.

Two-door coupe versions of the all-electric 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack and 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T will begin production in mid-2024.

Production of all-electric four-door Daytona Scat Pack and R/T models will begin in the first quarter of 2025.

‘Multi-Energy’ Powertrains

The next-generation Dodge Charger models are the first vehicles to debut on the STLA Large platform. Dodge calls this platform a highly flexible, battery-electric native platform with the potential to carry extreme power. A variety of suspension modules and powertrain cradles can be used for vehicle-specific performance objectives.

All-electric Charger Daytona models are powered by a 400-volt propulsion system, which Dodge says delivers supercharged V-8 performance with zero tailpipe emissions and instant torque response.

The propulsion system comprises a high-voltage battery pack, a dual integrated charge module, and front and rear electric drive modules. The battery pack is liquid-heated and cooled with a chiller. The lithium-ion-based battery features a high-energy density nickel cobalt aluminum chemistry.

The front drive module has a front-wheel-end disconnect to improve driving range, while the rear EDM includes a mechanical limited-slip differential to increase traction and performance. Both drive modules have a 3-in-1 architecture (inverter, gearbox, and motor); each generates 335 hp (250 kW) and 300 foot-pounds of torque.

Using paddle shifters, the force of regenerative braking — which converts the vehicle’s kinetic energy during deceleration into electricity — can be adjusted by 0.1g, 0.2g, or 0.3g regen.

Electric Driving Range

The Dodge Charger Daytona R/T is expected to have a battery-driving range of 317 miles, while the higher-performance Charger Daytona Scat Pack provides 260 miles of all-electric range.

Optional Level 2 wall-charging units or public charging credits will be offered through Free2move Charge. In 2023, Stellantis launched the so-called 360-degree ecosystem.

Using a Level 3 DC CCS fast charger, both electric Chargers can be recharged from 20 percent to 80 percent in just over 27 minutes. A 350-kW fast charger will add 9.9 miles of range per minute for the Daytona R/T and 8.1 miles per minute for the Daytona Scat Pack.

When comparing the total cruising ranges of the gas-powered and electric Charger models, the gas model wins. Factoring in combined fuel mileage estimates and the 18.5-gallon fuel tank, the 2023 Dodge Charger has a possible maximum range of 425 miles and a low of 333 miles.

Performance Features

Keeping true to the Dodge Brotherhood of Muscle, Charger Daytona models offer several levels of driver-selected performance. In addition to the Drag, Track, Drift, and Donut modes, there is the PowerShot mode, which adds 40 hp. With a throttle punch, the PowerShot gives a 15-second overboost.

Donut Mode: Enables the vehicle to spin only the rear wheels and to rotate around either of the front wheels without intervention from the traction control system;

Drift Mode: The driver can select three levels of slip angle, and torque is rear-axle biased, using the front axle to help maintain slip angle. Front dampers become full soft, and rear dampers go full stiff to enable an oversteer condition, and the traction control system allows for different wheel speed differentials without setting fault codes;

Daytona Suspension Hardware

Wheels and tires: The Track Package option for the Daytona Scat Pack adds the biggest tire package used to date by Dodge: 20-inch wheels and staggered Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 305/35ZR20XL (12 inches wide) front/325/35ZR20 rear tires (12.8 inches). The tire package is the first street or road-course-oriented staggered set-up for a Dodge Charger. Front and rear tires can be tuned independently, with the front tuned to achieve maximum lateral acceleration and the rear tuned for stability.

High-performance brakes: Available with the Track Package option on the Charger Daytona Scat Pack, 16-inch Brembo vented rotors with red six-piston front rotors and four-piston rear fixed calipers increase the swept area more than 30 percent from the outgoing SRT.

Suspension: Front multi-link with forged aluminum links. Independent rear suspension with a Charger-unique rear four-link geometry.

Dual-valve semi-active damping: Optional on the Charger Daytona Scat Pack with Track Package, the adaptive damping suspension uses dual valves, one for compression and one for rebound. Dodge says the suspension has three times the number of body accelerometers, four times the wheel-hub accelerometers, and four times the ride height sensors from the outgoing Charger. Using dual valves allows for more force in handling scenarios, a smoother ride over rough roads, and more personalization choices in each driving mode.

2024 Charger Styling

Both two- and four-door body styles share a widebody stance and a common wheelbase. An optional full-length glass roof (a gloss black painted roof comes standard) provides an expansive glass canopy.

The new Charger brings back the three-pointed, triangular badge that Dodge used on its muscle cars from 1962 through 1976. The return of the Fratzog logo represents the electrified future of Dodge.

No automaker has such descriptive paint color names as Dodge (and Plymouth). The new Charger continues the creativity with eight paint choices: After Dark, Bludicrous (as in Be-Ludicrous), Destroyer Grey, Diamond Black, Peel Out, Redeye, Triple Nickel, and White Knuckle.

Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust

Gas-powered Dodge muscle cars have long had their unique exhaust sound. So, too, will the electric Chargers, using a patent-pending Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust system. Its two passive radiators create an exhaust tone that Dodge says has Hellcat (V-8) sound intensity, worthy of the Brotherhood of Muscle. The Fratzonic system also has a stealth sound mode.

Interior Features

A driver-focused cockpit begins with a layered instrument panel with free-standing, wide-format 10.25-inch or 16-inch driver-info screens. A 12.3-inch center display in the center stack is angled toward the driver.

The heated flat top and flat bottom steering wheel includes paddle shifters for regenerative braking and the PowerShot button. A new “pistol-grip” shifter and the start button on the center console also incorporate a wireless phone charger.

Interior badging corresponds to the model: Daytona for the all-electric vehicles and Charger for gas-powered SIXPACK models.

Daytona Scat Pack and R/T models have a standard nine-speaker, 506-watt Alpine stereo with a subwoofer. An 18-speaker, 914-watt system is optional.

Cloth and leatherette seats are standard, with premium options for heated Black Nappa leather and Demonic Red Nappa leather seats. High-backed fixed headrest seats have a unique pass-through and are optional with the Plus Package, Track Package, and Carbon & Suede Package.

Charger’s “hidden hatch” roof design is about cargo capacity, including fold-flat back seats. The max rear cargo area is 38.5 cubic feet, which is 133 percent more cargo volume than the outgoing Charger. A “frunk” space adds 1.5 ft cubic feet of storage.

Making my rounds at the 2024 San Diego International Auto Show, two vehicles caught my eye, and both were Chevrolets: the 2024 Trailblazer and 2024 Trax. These small SUV crossovers have been re-engineered and redesigned, with particular attention to exterior styling. They are both built in South Korea by GM.

I spoke with a sizeable retirement-age showgoer sitting in the Cacti Green Trax Activ at the show. They felt comfortable behind the wheel but pointed to the nearby Trailblazer and preferred its interior space. They were shopping for a small SUV with four-wheel drive, which is available on the Trailblazer, but Trax is front-wheel drive only for all trim levels.

For 2024, Chevrolet has repositioned the Trax and Trailblazer, which share a vehicle architecture.

Trax is available only in front-wheel drive and has one powertrain, a 137-hp 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2024 Trailblazer is available in front- or all-wheel drive and has a choice of two turbocharged three-cylinder engines, either the base 1.2-liter or the 155-hp 1.3-liter. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Trailblazer pricing starts at $24,395 for front-drive and rises to $30,390 for the topline AWD models. Lower trim models can be optioned with AWD for $2,000.

Trax is the more economical choice, with starting prices ranging from $21,495 to $26,685.

Today’s tester is the 2024 Trax Activ, and I hope to circle back to assess the new Trailblazer.

Chevrolet Trax Backgrounder

When the Chevrolet Trax made its U.S. debut in 2015, it was among the smallest CUV offerings and shared an architecture with the Buick Encore (now the Buick Envista). Nine years later, the burgeoning segment of subcompact SUV crossovers has grown to at least nine models. The Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Jeep Compass, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Nissan Kicks, Toyota Corolla Cross, and VW Taos are among them.

The previous generation 2022 Trax (there was no 2023 model) had a 155-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic. It also had a slightly larger 14-gallon gas tank and the option for all-wheel drive.

Now in its second generation in North America, the 2024 Trax sheds its stubby and pinched body shape for a confident and contemporary stance. Compared to its predecessor, the new Trax is 11 inches longer, has a 3.5-inch lower roofline, and is 1.8 inches wider. Its wheelbase grew by 5.7 inches to 106.3 from 100.6 inches.

2024 Trax Pricing and Model Line

The 2024 Chevrolet Trax is sold in five trim levels with starting prices of $21,495 to $26,685, including the $1,095 freight charge from Changwon, Korea. Today’s tester is the topline Activ, which costs $26,685 with the Sunroof package ($895) and Driver Convenience package ($795).

The Sunroof package also packs wireless charging, an odd pairing for no meaningful reason except to upsell. Wireless charging is not offered as a standalone option.

Adding the Driver Confidence package ($795) is a smart choice for its safety technologies of rear cross-traffic alert, lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear park assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Adaptive Cruise Control does not allow Level-2 hands-on-the-wheel semi-autonomous driving, but its technologies add watchful eyes. Adaptive Cruise features a driver-selected “following gap” of one to four cars, and helpful in heavy commuting traffic. If a vehicle is detected in the driver’s lane, the system can maintain the set gap between the Trax and the car ahead. I set the gap spacing at one car length to dissuade other drivers from diving in front. While driving with the girlfriend, I set the space at four cars

Design Separators

  • The 2024 Chevrolet Trax LT features black seats with Sky Cool Gray accents;
  • 2RS has red accents on the seats, a wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, and black bowtie emblems;
  • ACTIV has a monochromatic look with black fender surrounds and sill guards, black bowtie emblems, and a prominent treatment to the lower rear fascia and skid plate. The interior has titanium chrome accents and Evotex seats with yellow accents.

2024 Trax Safety Features

In addition to six air bags, there is a big group of advanced safety technologies in the standard Chevrolet Safety Assist:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • IntelliBeam auto high beams
  • 3 years of OnStar remote access.

Of special interest is Front Pedestrian Braking, particularly for nighttime and low-visibility driving. At speeds between 5 and 50 mph, front pedestrian braking will alert the driver and can automatically provide hard emergency braking or enhance the driver’s hard braking.

LT, 2RS, and Activ have an 11-inch color display screen for infotainment and rear camera views. The screen is easy to read and is canted slightly toward the driver.

Which 2024 Chevrolet Trax to Buy?

Dollars matter when choosing an economy car, and Trax pricing is attractive. The price walk from base LS to topline Activ is just $3,500, which leaves room for indulgence.

Trax LS

Basic transportation with essential convenience features and solid safety technologies in the Chevrolet Safety Assist. The LS also has 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto capability, an 8-inch color touchscreen, a rearview camera, cruise control, electric parking brake, four-speaker audio system, remote keyless locking, power windows and locks, two non-charging USB ports (Type A and C), and a six-way manual driver seat.

Trax 1RS

Moving up a rung takes just $1,700 and builds on the LS content with a few more style features and conveniences. The 1RS adds the LS convenience package of remote start, heated front seats, carpeted rear floor mats, body-color heated power outside mirrors, and 17-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels. Other extras include a heated steering wheel with an attractive perforated leather wrap.

2RS

At $26,090, a step of $1,800, adds an 11-inch infotainment screen, a six-speaker audio system, 8-inch color driver-info gauge, two charging USB ports, a roller-style cargo cover, a front passenger seatback pocket, two key fobs, and Evotex seat upholstery.

LT

For another $200, the LT is the grown-up’s choice, but it is not possible to have the power eight-way driver seat — available only on the Trax Activ. The LT’s 17-inch alloy wheels with gray-painted slots will be less prone to curb rash than the solid black Activ and RS2 wheels, and the 17-inch tires will cost less to replace than 18s. I’d add the LT convenience package, $595, for its keyless entry (press the chiclet in the front door handles to unlock or lock), heated front seats, a heated and wrapped steering wheel, and heated body-color power outside mirrors. For $195, the Premium floor mats are more attractive and might be more durable than the standard mats. If you can find an LT on a dealership lot with these features, it should cost around $24,185.

Trax Updates for 2025

Before you decide which 2024 Trax you prefer, some updates are planned for the 2025 model year.

The 2024 Trax went on sale about a year ago, in the second quarter of 2023. In a testament to the growth of choices in this CUV segment, Chevrolet will make some important updates and changes for the 2025 model year, according to a report on GMAuthority.com https://gmauthority.com/blog/2024/02/here-is-2025-chevy-trax-pricing-with-options-and-packages/.

Among the 2025 updates will be new standard technologies and a new E85-compatible engine. Two new optional paint colors will be added, and Cayenne Orange Metallic was dropped. The new Marina Blue Metallic and Nitro Yellow Metallic are $395 each.

Here is the 2025 Trax MSRP breakdown by trim level:

  • Trax 1LS starting price stays the same at $21,495;
  • 1RS is up by $200 at $23,395;
  • 1LT is up by $200 at $23,595;
  • 2RS is up by $400 at $25,395;
  • Activ is up by $400 at $25,395.

Most factory package prices stayed the same, but some options and accessories had modest increases of $20 to $50.

Trax Performance and Powertrain

Don’t dismiss this 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine — its turbo force is deceiving. Trax is a lightweight at 3,042 pounds and makes the most of its 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm. Initial acceleration is slow until the turbo catches its breath, then there is eager pull.

The six-speed rolls smoothly through shifts, timed to maximize available power. There is no Sport mode — and there were times when I wanted more kick — but 137-hp will be good enough for most buyers seeking an economical car.

Fuel economy, however, might not be up to expectations for a small vehicle. However, Chevy Trax mileage ratings are comparable or a mpg better than its front-wheel-drive competition. Official Trax mileage estimates are 28 mpg city, 32 highway, and 30 mpg combined, using the recommended 87 octane fuel. With cruise-controlled highway driving, an owner might see up to 31.6 mpg. Fill the 13.2-gallon tank and expect nearly 400 miles of range.

For buyers of the Trax in cold climates, the Active Aero Shutters option ($125) might be a good idea. Chevrolet says this feature is a common option in Canada and some of the northern parts of the U.S. “The [shutter system] is placed ahead of the air-to-air charge air cooler in front of the radiator. The shutters close automatically under certain conditions when temperatures are extremely low during extended highway driving. Closing the shutters prevents water condensation in blow-by gasses from freezing into ice inside the charge air cooler. Ice in the charge air cooler can restrict airflow into the engine and result in temporary loss of performance until the ice melts.”

Ride and Handling

Trax would not be my choice as a distance commuter. The ride can be rough, and the cabin noisy. And even with active noise cancellation (through the audio system), there still is noticeable highway wind noise and probably tire noise.

The suspension engineering of the Trax chassis components needed more budget. I don’t expect luxury damping from a $21,000 crossover, but something is lacking in this setup. The Trax tools delicately along smooth streets, but rough patches and not-huge potholes bring on bang-hard jolts, with steering column judder. (I have not experienced steering judder in any vehicle since testing a 1994 Chevy Cavalier sedan.)

I blame the rear torsion beam suspension, which Chevy calls a Compound Crank. It is a functional setup for front-drive vehicles, especially wagons or small crossover SUVs, because it is lightweight and lost cost, compared to a multilink. And the torsion beam elements lie flat, preserving cargo capacity. The engineers tried to blunt the bumps with twin-tube shock absorbers, but more should be done. Not all rear torsion beam suspensions (also called twist beam) are this harsh. Would a rear stabilizer bar make a difference?

Standard tires for the Trax Activ are 18-inch all-season Goodyear Assurance Finesse, 225/55. The tires have a fairly hard treadwear rating (UTQG) of 540, translating to an estimated lifecycle of 65,000 miles or about six years. The hardness of the tire might contribute to the interior noise. A compact spare is included.

Four-wheel disc braking can give slam-stopping action when needed. All Trax models have an electric parking brake, which is smart to clean up foot space rather than using a foot-pumper brake.

With its larger body, the Trax interior has good shoulder room (55.7 inches) and tall headroom of 39.6 inches. The front bucket seats, with Evotex upholstery, have good grip without restrictive side or bottom bolsters. And the Evotex breathes, which is essential in hot weather. BUT, Trax has the Chevrolet droop-seat syndrome. Chevy’s seat structure for its less expensive models seems to “relax” (sag) after setting a position. After 20 minutes into the drive, I have to readjust the seat height and rearview mirror. Activ’s eight-way power driver seat is easy to adjust and has two-way power lumbar.

Trax interior materials do not look cheap and appear well put together. There is a light gray woven headliner and basic black plastic from the window sills to the floor. Color pops, metallic trim elements, and turbine-look gimbal-style air vents present a self-assured style and neatly break up the black.

A low instrument panel enhances outward visibility and contributes to the feeling of airiness. Sightlines are unrestricted across the hood or out the back glass, though the opening appears smallish in the rearview mirror.

The driver gauge array is distinctive, with a black digital screen. The large center speedometer readout focuses the driver’s attention. Another tidbit of useful info is the Following Distance Indicator. In the upper right corner of the gauge array, a digital readout shows the distance to the vehicle ahead in seconds. Seeing in seconds is valuable awareness of how close not to follow and still be able to stop in an emergency.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

There is actual adult head and leg room in the back seat. The three-position bench has acceptable thigh support, and the seatback is contoured for uncommon comfort not usually found in any subcompact vehicle. The flat floor allows decent center seat footroom, and the window seats have open foot space under the front seats.

There are grab handles above each door and a dome light. But there are no back-seat cup holders and no center armrest.

Cargo space is ample, with a max of 25.6 cubic feet behind the back seat (stacked to the headliner). Fold the 60/40 seatbacks for up to 54.1 cubic feet and about 5 ½ feet in length. A stiff cargo cover is included with the Activ.

Why Buy the 2024 Chevrolet Trax?

Despite what I consider a harsh suspension, the new Trax is very likable with accommodating interior design and plentiful cargo space.

A new Trax will be salvation for the young family getting out of a tired, hand-me-down Camry. Trax has easy access to the wide-opening back doors to buckle up a child seat, with cargo space to throw in a stroller, or two. A Trax 1RS, starting at $23,195, has some style in its 18-inch wheels and red interior accents. Add the Driver Confidence package of rear-park assist ($395, including rear-cross-traffic alert and lane-change and side blind-zone alerts), the hard cargo cover ($250), and Premium floor mats to replace the lightweight cheapie standard mats, and the MSRP goes to $24,035.

For buyers on fixed incomes, such as the retiree I spoke with at the auto show, the new Trax is now roomy enough to enjoy for many years. It is a handy runabout with elbow room, good sight lines, and light steering for easy parking. A Trax LT is a thrifty but accommodating choice. Add upgrades for the Convenience package ($595), the Interior protection package of premium winter-summer floor mats and cargo liner ($515), and a $150 cargo liner, and the MSRP is affordable at $25,300. But a power driver seat is unavailable on this trim, which would mean opting for the Activ.

No matter which Trax a buyer takes home — 2024 or 2025 — they will have to take the good with some bad.

With 300 miles of range, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is a formidable battery-electric, but it gets even better with a list of improvements for the 2024 models.

If the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV was a love interest, it might best be explained as “Complicated.” It is beautiful to look at, dreamy to drive, and the interior is a gallery of gorgeous. This big, voluptuous SUV is a definite swipe right to get the details and to winnow the traits you like and those you could not live with — and there are a few.

For those who remember the vault-like Benzes of old, this new Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is a direct descendant. Among its outstanding features is the traffic-calmed cabin created by a team of “aeroacousticians.” They applied a lot of soundproofing and aerodynamic tuning to reduce wind resistance and noise. Mercedes-Benz says that the aero engineering resulted in an extremely low drag coefficient of 0.251. (And that Cd is slipperier than the Toyota Prius.)

The EQE SUV went on sale in spring 2023 as the platform-mate to the EQE executive sedan, which has been on sale since fall 2021. However, the EQE SUV is more compact than the EQE sedan, with a wheelbase (119.3 inches) 3.5 inches shorter than the sedan.

With its 90.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, the EQE 350+ SUV has an official EPA estimated range of 279 miles. When I charged at home, a 100 percent charge went to 320 miles. However, most EV makers recommend charging to 100 percent only for highway-distance driving.

Buckle up for this ride. It is more than mere electric transportation, the Mercedes-Benz EQ brand goes boldly into an alternate existence of augmented reality. The EQ vehicles are an immersive experience enhanced with computer-generated visual elements amid OLED portrait displays, interactive aural soundscapes, and the luxurious stimuli of materials to suit an affluent buyer.

What is EQ?

EQ stands for “Electric Intelligence,” the new all-electric brand for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. It is an all-in global approach as the carmaker plans to become fully electric by 2030 “wherever market conditions allow.” The ambitious plan includes becoming CO2-neutral by 2039 — while connecting luxury with sustainability.

Production of the EQE SUV began at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in Dec. 2022. The battery factory in nearby Bibb County supplies the batteries for this model and the EQS SUV. Since 2022, all of Mercedes-Benz’s own passenger car and van plants worldwide have achieved net carbon-neutral production as part of their eco-balance — including the two Mercedes-Benz plants in Alabama.

All vehicles in the Mercedes-EQ brand are on a single platform — EVA2 — developed specifically for electric drivetrains. The model line is extensive, with several vehicles targeted for European production, such as the small EQA crossover, EQB compact SUV (also available in the US), an EQV minivan, and a commercial van.

Most models in the U.S. Mercedes-EQ line are rear-wheel drive with optional 4Matic all-wheel drive. Here is the EQ lineup to date:

  • EQB small SUV with seats for 5-7, starting at $53,900;

EQ Global Charging Network

Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced a far-reaching plan to launch a global high-power charging network across North America, Europe, China, and other key markets. By 2027, the company plans for a network of more than 400 hubs across North America, including more than 2,500 high-power chargers.

The current Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is sold in four trim levels of Premium, Exclusive, and Pinnacle in rear- or dual-motor 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Manufacturer retail pricing includes the $1,150 freight charge from Vance, Ala. US buyers of the EQE SUV will receive two years of free 30-minute DC Fast Charging sessions at Electrify America public charging stations.

EQE 350+ RWD $79,050-$84,800; 90.6 kWh battery, 288-hp, 418 lb.-ft. torque, 279 miles of range, 6.3 seconds 0-60 mph. (Plus stands for the highest range version in that class.)

Today’s tester is a 2023 EQE 350+ Premium that was $86,290 with 10 packages. Among the optional equipment is 10-degree rear axle steering ($1,300), the driver-assistance package ($1,250), and the Acoustic Comfort package ($1,100). (Fresh from its spring debut, the EQE SUV will not have a freshening until 2027, according to a report in Automotive News.

There are no current federal incentives or rebates, but MBUSA.com is advertising a $7,500 lease bonus cash, which is the top tax rebate once offered by the government. Check here for special  EQ offers.

What’s New for the 2024 EQE SUV?

For the 2024 EQE model year, Mercedes-Benz has significantly added to standard equipment for the exterior, interior, and powertrain. The 2024 EQE models are expected in dealerships in the first quarter; retail pricing will initially stay the same as for 2023.

Powertrain Updates

New battery for improved range: 96.0 kWh on EQE 350+ and EQE 500 4M, 90.56 kWH on EQE 350 4Matic.

The large battery will also extend the electric range:

  • EQE 350+: 307 miles, a 28-mile increase;
  • EQE 350 4MATIC: 265 miles, a 12-mile increase;
  • EQE 500 4MATIC: 287 miles, an 18-mile increase;
  • New Standard Equipment for all EQE SUVs:

Mechanical and Digital Changes

  • All-new braking system for improved brake feel;
  • Flex charging cable for Level 1 and Level 2 charging;
  • Power opening and closing charging port door. The charging door can be opened via the user experience screen. When the cable is removed, the door closes automatically. Opening and losing can still be done manually by pressing the charger port door.
  • Communications module upgrade to 5G service;
  • 2nd-row occupant reminder and seatbelt detection system;
  • New “Serene Breeze” soundscape tone;
  • 20-inch wheels (an $850 option in 2023);

Miscellaneous Changes and Updates

EQE Warranties

All Mercedes-EQ models have bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage of 4 years or 50,000 miles. The hybrid battery is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles. The MSRP includes free scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 20,000 miles.

High repair costs and finicky electronics make a Mercedes extended warranty worth considering. Extended Limited Warranty activates after the factory warranty expires. The plans are expensive and are available in increments of 1, 2, or 3 years, but the potential peace of mind could be worth it. Start your research here.

EQE Powertrain

All models of EQE use permanently excited synchronous electric motors. An advanced cooling system helps maintain consistent motor performance in forceful driving and through various climates.

“Permanently excited” motors use less power and have a smaller motor case. The permanent magnet rotor also has a higher torque capacity, which is essential for a vehicle that weighs 5,412 pounds. Rear-drive EQE models have one motor on the rear axle, while 4Matic AWD adds another motor at the front axle. To help stretch driving range, the front motor can decouple when not needed; it will re-engage in 100 milliseconds, Mercedes says.

A single-speed automatic transmission capably controls the acceleration force without delay in uptake. Performance in Comfort mode is not quick or sharp, but it will keep the driver out of harm’s way. Switch to Sport mode for quicker and more consistent power flow.

Paddles on the steering wheel allow the driver to vary the intensity of energy recuperated by deceleration and braking during everyday driving. There are three levels of recuperation:

  • Normal, which can allow one-pedal driving to bring the EQE to a stop;
  • None, effectively coasting when the driver lifts off the pedal.
  • D Auto, which activates intelligent ECO Assist. The system uses radar, a stereo camera, and GPS map data, including topography, traffic, and nearby vehicles. With those parameters, ECO Assist can optimize energy recovery and allow one-pedal driving in some situations.

EQE 350+ Performance

Maximum total power outputs range from 215 kW for the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ rear-wheel drive to 300 kW for the EQE 500 4Matic. The EQE AMG packs 350 kW of power and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds. The EQE 350+ has 288 horsepower and 417 foot-pounds of torque, channeled through a single-speed automatic transmission for 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds. 4Matic AWD models also have 288 hp but 564 lb.-ft. of torque; battery driving range drops to 253 miles.

Towing capacity: The EQE 350+ RWD is not recommended for towing, but 4Matic models have a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

EQE Charging Times

LEVEL 1 household 110-volt outlet: 2-4 miles of range per hour of charging. It has the slowest charging power available and is only recommended if no other option is available. Use a Level 1 cable to plug into a standard 120V household outlet for up to 1.9 kW power.

LEVEL 2, 240-volt (home or public charging): 20-30 miles of range per hour of charging. Charge up to 9.6kW on 40 amps for a full charge overnight.

LEVEL 3 DC Fast Charging, from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes: Public station output can range from 50kW to 350kW. Some EQ models can support charging power of up to 200kW; the EQE can manage charging power of up to 170kW.

Onboard charger: 9.6 kW, with the optional cable, $250. (For 2024, this cable was made standard equipment.) This 9.6 kW cable is for use in 110-volt or 240-volt household outlets. Like a spare tire, the cable is better than nothing to pull in a few miles when visiting family or a friend. Hyundai includes a 10.9-kW onboard charger as standard equipment for its EVs.

Most owners of EQ vehicles will have a wall-box charger in the garage. If not, the Mercedes-Benz dealership can help with sales, installation, and accessing the Electrify America free charging via the Mercedes Me app.

Vacation Prep for Charging

Special charging care is required when a Mercedes-Benz EQE owner goes on extended travel and leaves their vehicle in the garage. After two weeks or longer, the all-important 12-volt battery likely will be weakened or dead, making it impossible to open the EQ or even get it started.

Mercedes provides no external 12-volt battery charge points, so the car must be towed to the dealer when the battery dies.

Here is what Mercedes-Benz recommends when leaving their EQ vehicle for extended periods:

  • Park the vehicle with the high-voltage battery charged between 30 percent to 50 percent.
  • Do not leave the vehicle plugged into a wall box or household outlet during the extended parking period.
  • Every six weeks, at least, the owner should check the status of the high-voltage battery charge (in-vehicle or through the Mercedes Me app). If the traction battery dips below 30 percent, it must be charged. During times of extended non-use, do not disconnect the 12-volt battery.
  • The high voltage system also charges the 12V battery.

EQE SUV Ride and Handling

The 5,400-pound EQE SUV rolls as if on memory foam, but there is some bound and heave when braking and making evasive maneuvers. The tester had the standard four-link suspension at the front and an independent multilink suspension at the rear. The components gave lush control over speed bumps and dips in the road without aggressive head-toss.

An optional AIRMATIC suspension ($1,900) substitutes electronically controlled air springs. The system can adjust to road conditions, compensate for cargo or passengers, and vary the ride height. The air springs will lower the EQE at higher speeds for improved aerodynamics or raise it up to an inch for added ground clearance.

There is not much communication of road feel through the steering, but does that matter to owners of this elevated electric SUV.

I was impressed by how nimble this big rig pivoted into tight parking with the 10-degree rear axle steering ($1,300). It shortens the turning circle from 40.4 feet to 34.4, which compares to 35.4 feet for the Subaru BRZ sports car. At speed, ear-axle steering helps tuck the EQE neatly back into place after passing a vehicle. This function is so worth the cost.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric summer tires contribute to the comfortable and quiet ride. The tester’s 20-inch Goodyears (255/45) have a 10-inch-wide footprint and a very soft 300AAA treadwear rating (UTQG).

Electric vehicles are heavy and wear out tires faster than other vehicles. The Goodyear tires wrap the ride like a plush bathrobe, but these soft tires will be ground down before their expected 30,000-mile life cycle. These are “Mercedes Only (MO)” tires sourced through the dealership.

EQE Driving Assistance Systems

The optional Driver Assistance package ($1,250) allows Level 2 semi-autonomous driving with hands on the steering wheel. Other technologies in the package include active distance assist Distronic, active evasive steering assist, active lane change assist, active blind spot assist, active speed limit assist, and traffic sign assist.

Lane-Change Assist. As part of the optional Driver Assistance Package, and when Driver Assist is engaged, the EQE SUV can automatically initiate a lane change and pass slower vehicles without driver intervention. In my experience, the auto lane change was sometimes confused when highway lines converged or led off to an exit ramp. Because I am an active driver, the lane change action was distracting, though it might become a handy tool with more drive time to become accustomed to its inputs.

Route planning. Using “electric intelligence,” the navigation system can plan the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops and traffic jam rerouting. The system also calculates the expected charging costs for a charging stop (and these fees can be widely variable, such as time-of-day use.) Of course, the driver can edit the planned route to add preferred charging stations and exclude other charging stations.

Interior Function

Get settled behind the flat-bottom steering wheel and take in the breadth of an interior with the creativity of a concept design in real-time. Natural grain linden wood shows pristine craftwork in thin vertical strips across the instrument panel. The EQE 350+ tester is smartly dressed in MB-Tex upholstery, a manufactured vinyl. It feels richly supple, as if it were inch-thick leather. Both front seats are 10-way power adjustable and heated; ventilated seats are a $450 extra. And do not expect a heated steering wheel as standard on this $86,000 Mercedes, as I did. For 2023, a heated steering wheel is $250.

All cabin functions are accessed by digital screens, which were easy enough to figure out. The touch sensors are well-calibrated for a light and accurate selection.

The cabin is inset from the exterior by about 8 inches, which is good for side-impact crush space, but the inset and cab-forward design make forward views seem enclosed. The view looked awkward on my first drive, but there was no compromise to sightlines over the hood and fenders.

Small storage space is limited in the front seat area, and the phone charging pad is hard to access in the forward console space. But the center console storage is a canyon, about 11 inches deep by 6 ½ inches wide. The “bridge” space below the console is also huge, such as for stowing a handbag.

I like the exterior appearance of the optional and lighted running boards integrated with the lower body. But put that $650 option toward rear-axle steering. The running boards create an awkward half-step and a foot-wide step-in dilemma, causing dirty scuffs on pant legs or stockings. There are no roof rails, so the lift of a running board is unnecessary.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

Despite generous headroom of 39.3 inches and maximum legroom of 40.5 inches, the EQE SUV back seat space feels compact. The raised bench seat has a short bottom, and legroom depends on long legs in front. There are no cup or can holders, but bottle storage is in the doors. The fold-down padded armrest has a short slide-out to tuck a phone and run a charging cable to one of the dual charging USBs in the back of the front console, which protrudes into center-seat footroom.

Between the narrow rear door aperture and the obstacle of the wide running board, it can be a struggle to enter the back seat. Oddly, there are NO grab handles to give an assist. The wide boards and narrow entry will also be challenging for parents when securing children into car seats.

Cargo space of 14 cubic feet (stacked to the headliner) is broad and square, 41 inches wide and 36 inches to the seatback with 28 inches to the headliner. Fold the 40/20/40 back seat for up to 55 cubic feet. (The black carpet mat in my photo is a $90 accessory.)

There is no spare tire, only an inflator kit stored under the cargo floor where there is space for the optional charging cable. If the EQE SUV takes a header into a snowbank, there is the largest recovery tow pin I have ever seen in any vehicle. Mercedes spared no weight in providing it.

Human-Machine Interface

Electric vehicles are rolling computers with distinct characteristics not always available to a combustion engine vehicle. Among the Mercedes-EQ features are:

Soundscapes. Without the noise (sounds) from a combustion engine, Mercedes-Benz adds “holistic sound staging.” Several sound choices can be piped into the cabin.: Serene Breeze (relaxed and unagitated), Silver Waves, Vivid Flux, or Roaring Pulse (sonorous and extroverted). Interior speakers play the sounds, such as on entry, a different sound when exiting, and a driving sound that changes with accelerator position, speed, or energy recovery. The sounds can be switched off if desired.

Pre-entry climate control. A climate control algorithm uses machine learning to predict driver behavior around departure times. The system can detect a pattern if the vehicle regularly sets off from a particular place at a specific time. In that case, the activity is automatically entered into the departure time menu to provide pre-entry climate control. Another asset of this tech feature is that it allows for gentler (slower) battery charging to the required level in time for departure. This function is activated in the Mercedes Me app.

Heat pump, not radiant. Waste heat from the electric drive (inverter and electric motor) and the high-voltage battery can be used to heat the interior. Using a heat pump rather than traditional radiant cabin heating drastically reduces the draw on battery power for the heating system, which increases the range, Mercedes says.

EQE Safety Features and Ratings

There are no official safety ratings for the Mercedes-Benz EQE models from the NHTSA  or IIHS. According to online reports, it is not uncommon for luxury cars, supercars, and hypercars that sell in small numbers to not undergo government crash testing.

The European NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) has tested the EQE and awarded it a five-star rating. But Consumer Reports advises car shoppers against relying on ratings from safety agencies in other countries because protocols and safety standards can differ from country to country. Vehicles sold in other markets might also have design differences that affect their performance in crash tests, even if those variations are not visible.

Standard safety technologies on all Mercedes-EQ models include active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with a surround-view camera system, active brake assist, and a Pre-Safe predictive occupant protection system. The status and activity of the systems can be viewed in the driver’s gauge display.

Of particular interest is the Guard 360 vehicle protection with parking damage detection. Guard 360 is a relatively new anti-theft technology provided by Mercedes-Benz. It is an “intelligent” system comprised of an anti-theft alarm system, a tow-away protection system with visuals and alarms, and various sensors and monitors for parking collision detection.

When there is an incident, the driver receives detailed information via the Mercedes Me App. The system also records images of damage, which can be viewed on the MBUX screen or in the app. If the vehicle is stolen, damaged, or towed, the owner will get notifications on their smartphone, including photos, dates, and time stamps. EQE SUV Oddities and Observations

External wiper-washer-fluid access. The first thing I noticed on the front left fender of the EQE SUV 350+ tester was a slim cutout panel. It is the access point to add windshield washer fluid. I thought odd, but the reason for it is in the next paragraph.

Factory-secured hood. I learned that the external washer-fluid access is because the owner cannot or should not open the hood. Per the owner’s manual, a certified Mercedes-Benz technician or qualified specialist service facility must perform any under-hood maintenance. That includes charging the 12-volt battery when needed; the 12-volt battery powers features such as door locking and unlocking, audio, and the blinking light of theft monitoring.

No Vehicle to Load (V2L) capability. This EV technology uses “reverse compatibility,” or bidirectional, to allow an EV battery to be used as an alternate power source. Hyundai, for example, provides a special cable with its electric vehicles to tap the traction battery in the event of a significant power outage. I consider this function a simple survival asset. V2L is handy for operating small appliances, recharging electronic devices, or giving a boost to another EV.

Back to the Dealership. Mercedes-EQ vehicle owners depend on just about every aspect of maintenance for their vehicle, from factory-specific tires to a simple charge of a dead 12-volt battery.

Why Buy the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV?

Mercedes-Benz knows its customer base and builds the EQ lineup to their satisfaction. Many EQ owners are long-time Benz owners and have a combustion-engine Mercedes in their garage. Take a look at MBWorld.com  or Benzworld.com.

Mercedes is not fazed by what other brands do for their EVs except to meet or surpass engineering standards and the driving range. There are many well-done battery-electric competitors to the EQ, but Mercedes’ presentation of luxury makes it unique. Other marques in this luxury queue include the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW i5, Genesis Electrified G80, Polestar 2, Lucid Air, and Volvo EX90.

There have been growing pains with this new Mercedes-EQ platform, primarily in electronic glitches, which EQ owners well document in online forums, including this one. The owners are not happy having to go back to the dealership, and sometimes, it can take days to solve a problem. However, owner comments make it appear that M-B takes care of customers when issues arise, and the owners praise how their vehicle drives and handles.

Electric vehicle technologies are still in their nebula stage, and electronic glitches will continue as we drive into the future.

The electrification plan for Mercedes-Benz EQ, including the manufacturing process, is at the forefront of innovation, shaping a greener, more efficient future. And Mercedes EQ owners want to be on the point of that spear.

FEBRUARY 13, 2024, AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Chrysler today unveiled the Chrysler Halcyon Concept, exemplifying a fully electrified future of the Chrysler brand. The concept embraces sustainability-driven exterior and interior design, full autonomy paired with personalized driving experiences and futuristic technology.

Chrysler plans to launch its first battery-electric vehicle in 2025 and is on course to feature an all-electric portfolio in 2028. The Chrysler Halcyon Concept reinforces the brand’s commitment to the plan of Stellantis Dare Forward 2030, which cultivates electrified and more efficient propulsion systems. The goal is for Stellantis to cut its global carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2030 and to lead the transportation industry by achieving net carbon zero by 2038.

The interior of the Chrysler Halcyon Concept has an almost 360-degree range of view. Chrysler says the design delivers a “digital detox” cockpit through stress-free autonomous features.

Chrysler Halcyon: A Forward-Looking Vision for an All-Electric Future

The Chrysler Halcyon Concept imagines a future that utilizes innovative Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer, DWPT. This technology will wirelessly recharge electric vehicles traveling over specially equipped, dedicated road lanes. The power transfer system is intended to allow unlimited range and travel from destinations, such as New York to Seattle, without needing a charger, charge cord, or public charging stations. Stellantis partnered in 2022 to demonstrate the potential of DWPT technology at the Arena del Futuro circuit in Chiari, Italy.

The concept also envisions incorporating breakthrough Lyten 800-volt lithium-sulfur EV batteries that do not use nickel, cobalt or manganese. By not using these mixed metal oxides, Chrysler anticipates an estimated 60 percent lower carbon footprint than today’s best-in-class batteries and a pathway to achieve the lowest emissions EV battery on the global market. In May 2023, Stellantis Ventures, Stellantis’s corporate venture fund, announced an investment in Lyten to accelerate the commercialization of Lyten 3D Graphene applications for the mobility industry.

Interior Design and Features

A cross-car pillar-to-pillar transparent display centers the sculpted cockpit. The screen provides a forward-looking view of information while keeping eyes on the road. A stowable 15.6-inch console screen can be rotated for portrait or landscape orientation and can assist in start-up and quick access to information. Voice recognition commands can fully control the displays.

AI functionality allows the driver to ask the vehicle anything. STLA Brain technology delivers over-the-air updates for software and features. The Stellantis AI system enables the concept to diagnose issues and communicate OTA solutions without visiting a dealership.

The reverse-yoke-designed steering wheel folds away, with pedals also retracting when the steering wheel retracts.

Detroit’s musical culture and heritage inspire Chrysler’s new wing logo. The logos on the steering wheel and other cabin areas are made from crushed and 100 percent recycled composite material made from post-consumer music CDs.

A glass center console links the cabin spaces from the front to the rear. Lighting is a focal point for the console and continues along the doors, footrest, and footwells.

Lightweight, keystone-shaped front seats can fully retract into the rear seat position, creating a giant accessible area.

Rear seats retract into the trunk area to highlight a potential next-generation vision of Stow’ n Go seating, invented for Chrysler minivans. The rear seats stow away either through biometric identification or voice.

Innovative Materials

The dark gray floor is a malleable, textile-infused wood with a microfiber backing, offering multiple potential applications. The wood is traceable throughout its entire production.

Brushed black copper door and door sill film accents provide an alternative to paint, lowering the concept’s use of volatile organic compounds emitted during the painting process. The thin film transitions in shades from black to brown.

The trunk area also features a textile-infused wood floor and a runnerboard on the floor that can be removed for more storage space. There also is a pass-through from the rear seats.

Halcyon Concept Bullet Points

  • Based on Chrysler’s STLA Large BEV platform, the Halcyon Concept integrates STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit, and STLA AutoDrive technologies;
  • The concept’s dramatic proportions create a low-to-the-ground profile with a front air blade aerodynamic pass-through for improved BEV range;
  • Butterfly-hinged canopy and red-carpet-style side doors create an open-air feel and give easy access in and out of the vehicle;
  • In Prepare Mode, Stellantis AI assistant preps the cabin to set HVAC levels; predictive navigation provides real-time traffic routing;

The rear of the Chrysler Halcyon concept also carries its own unique silhouette, with a water line that emphasizes the width and shoulders of the car, and the front’s cross-car read and LED-lit Chrysler Wing logo are mirrored in the rear.

  • A Welcome Mode uses biometric identification to greet the driver with LED exterior lighting animation, personalized exterior sounds, and a greeting on interior screens;
  • Personalized vehicle “cymatics” –— sounds and vibrations mirrored through visuals — give calming or energetic sounds based on driver presets;
  • Different sound frequencies prompt corresponding particle shapes on the wide console screen. So-called “calming frequencies” create dispersed particle patterns, while dynamic sounds have energetic shapes;
  • Chrysler’s STLA AutoDrive technology platform enables Level 4 autonomous driving;
  • A dimmable glass canopy and windshield can turn opaque with seats laid back for a unique augmented-reality Stargazing Mode;
  • Drivers can use voice recognition to deploy the steering wheel and control the vehicle through customized EV drive modes.
