BY MARK MAYNARD

The on-road recharging function of the 2025 Lexus NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid is the missing link between a hybrid and full EV. Being able to recharge the small hybrid battery while driving elevates this PHEV as a one-vehicle choice for the tentative EV buyer.

The battery-electric driving range is 26 to 37 miles, which provides emissions-free driving. And because this small SUV can charge on the go, it continues to extend the driving range and fuel savings.

It is a functional system that can be used to bank battery power while running on gasoline. When the charge runs out, hit the console switch for Charge Mode. Switch to EV power to save gas when the battery is full again.

Even when driving in EV mode, the gas engine will kick in for strong acceleration or on steep hills.

Charge mode quickly adds miles while driving at interstate speeds and slower while in town. The recharging was so efficient that I did not need to plug in on my home 240-volt charger. However, on-road charging will only boost the battery to an 80 percent charge, so owners might want to plug in overnight for the full 37-mile range.

This recharging mode elevates the common plug-in hybrid to a strong daily commuter, an enviable vacation traveler, a fuel saver, and an emissions conservator. It is that spoonful of sugar that sweetens the $60,000 price tag.

Recharging on the go should be the future tech for all plug-in hybrids. So far, I have tested only a few PHEVs with this capability, including the Mazda CX-90 and McLaren Artura.

2025 Lexus NX Overview

The Lexus NX is a compact-class, five-seat, five-door SUV crossover. It was fully redesigned from the inside out in 2022.

In the Lexus SUV lineup, the compact NX — “Nimble Crossover” — fits between the subcompact UX and the mid-size RX. You might not know by looking at it, but the Lexus NX shares a platform with the Toyota RAV4. The rakishly stylish NX has the same powertrain options and uses the same 105.9-inch wheelbase. The NX is about 2 ½ inches longer and less than a half-inch wider (due to body styling). And the NX roofline is about an inch lower than the RAV4. Still, the NX feels like a smaller compact than the RAV4.

Though nimble to drive, the NX is hampered by wide turning circles of 38 to 40 feet. And the span might be wider on the taller 20-inch tires of the F Sport models.

Comparable small SUVs to the Lexus NX include the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Volvo XC40.

What’s New for 2025?

For the 2025 model year, the NX line has just minor changes. Two new color options are available: Copper Crest (exterior) and Macadamia (interior, Luxury grade only). Inside, two USB Type-C ports are now included in the front console, and a wireless charger is available on all trim levels. Intuitive Parking Assist with Automatic Braking, Auto Rain Sensing Wipers, and a power liftgate are now standard.

Over-the-air updates offer real-time updates for mapping and media.

What is California Clean Assist?

Lexus and Toyota offer a special Clean Assist program for California plug-in hybrid owners. Eligible Toyota Group vehicles include the Lexus NX 450h+ and Lexus RZ BEV, Toyota Prius Plug-in, Prius Prime, or RAV4 Prime.

The program allows owners of plug-in hybrid models to offset their vehicle charging with 100 percent renewable energy. The automaker matches the electricity used to charge your plug-in or battery-electric vehicle through Renewable Energy Certificates.

Lexus will match the electricity used to charge your plug-in NX with renewable electricity to make your vehicle’s charging free of CO2 emissions.

If applicable, Lexus reports the total amount of your clean energy to state and local regulatory boards. The credits for Low Carbon Fuel Standard help promote and educate EV adoption.

Owners with a registered Lexus account can enroll in the program using the Lexus app. Tap the Clean Assist card to “Enroll Now.”

Looking at the 302-hp gas-electric hybrid powertrain in the Lexus NX

The 302-hp gas-electric hybrid powertrain. (Mark Maynard)

Powertrain and Performance

The gas-electric hybridization is a parallel system with a gas engine, high-voltage lithium-ion battery, and three permanent magnet electric motors. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine brings 181 horsepower, which jumps to 302 hp from the motors and battery.

That’s responsive power for a small SUV weighing 4,475 pounds. On average, my fuel economy was around 33 mpg, but the reward is extending battery driving.

The F Sport has drive modes of Eco, Normal, EV, Sport, and Sport S+. I drove in Eco for most of the week before I switched up. Eco is fine for in-town driving to max fuel economy. Sport is much more engaging, though.

Regenerative braking captures heat from braking and pipes it back to the battery pack. The large, ventilated four-wheel disc brakes have rewarding force without grab or dive. Lexus was not timid in providing braking force. The four-wheel ventilated brakes have 12.9-inch rotors at the front and 12.5 inches rear.

Triple beam LED headlights with washers and cornering lamps.

NX Safety Technologies

In addition to eight air bags and large four-wheel disc brakes, the NX has received multiple safety ratings. So far, the accolades include:

  • Five stars from the Euro NCAP;
  • Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety;
  • NHTSA awarded four out of five stars in its frontal crash test and five stars in the side crash test.

I especially enjoyed and took advantage of the standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 driver-assistance features. (Full details are in the specs box at the end of the review.)

Typically, I only use the All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control on the highway. In this test week, I engaged DRCC in town at 25 mph, and the system almost worked as one-pedal driving. Radar and cameras watch the road ahead to maintain the preset speed and distance from vehicles ahead. The system will automatically slow or stop if the NX gets closer than the preset distance. When the road ahead clears, the vehicle returns to its preset speed.

There is a lot to explore among the sophisticated technologies of the Lexus NX.

Lexus NX F Sport features include aluminum pedals.

Lexus NX F Sport features include robust aluminum pedals.

F Sport Ride and Handling

The F Sport model has the hotted-up appearance of the urban street fighter. Except for the adaptive suspension, it’s mostly cosmetic, but the treatment spans from good to horrible. Built on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform, the NX chassis is solid and ideal for a performance suspension.

The adaptive setup is an eager partner for sporty driving, if that is your intent. But it can be tiring on every drive.

On chunky road surfaces, the suspension instantly stiffens with jarring jolts. Along twisting country roads with undulations and crumbly portions, the suspension continually adjusts and can feel unsettled.

It is a noisy ride, too. No matter how high I crank the 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system, it is not enough to silence the wind and road noise. There must not be much soundproofing between the firewall and cabin, which is why I always tried to run on battery power.

The noisy ride might be from the Bridgestone Alenza run-flat tires. The tires have soft compounding (a 300 treadwear rating), which is good for performance adhesion. However, according to user reviews at TireRack.com , these tires were worn to the treadwear bars between 7,800 to 8,500 miles. Replacements will run around $385 each, not including installation, etc.

Interior Function

It is easy to get comfortable in the NX driver space, but headroom might be an issue for the big and tall. The NX is, after all, a compact. Front headroom of 38.3 inches is acceptable for most, with long legroom of 41 inches.

Drivers of shorter stature will appreciate how far forward the power seats can move.

The optional wireless charging pad is a smart design. It sits on a sliding shelf that will fit large phones and is adjacent to the USB charging ports. The clever part is that the shelf can slide forward to reveal small storage below.

There also is usable stash space in the door panels and a locking glove box.

I liked the multiview camera system, showing front, rear, and an overhead view to show how badly I parked. And all doors have a locking sensor, which is a big plus for me. It saves a second or two from having to unlock the front doors to get into the back. Seconds matter when loading children.

The NX back seat is reasonably comfortable with a couple notches of recline.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

The 60/40 split bench is reasonably comfortable with a couple of notches of recline. Headroom is good at 37.1 inches. Legroom sounds good at 36.1 inches unless Uncle Long John is seated ahead.

Foot space getting in and out is tight for adults.

Back seat amenities include the fold-down armrest with can holders. There are grab handles with jack hooks above each door, two charging USBs, and a 12-volt plug.

Fold the back seat for about 6 feet in length.

Cargo Space

Cargo space is functional at 22.7 cubic feet, stacking gear to the ceiling. The tailgate entry is a broad 39 inches with about 29 inches from floor to headliner. Fold the back seat for 6 feet in length, with the front seat powered forward.

Under-cargo storage has divided portions to carry the charging cable, next to the 12-volt battery. Access to the battery is convenient for the occasional jump start.

There is cargo underfloor storage for the charging cable and the folded cargo cover when not in use

Why Buy the 2025 Lexus NX 450h PHEV?

The 2025 Lexus NX plug-in hybrid is appealing as an all-around SUV crossover. Its small size makes for an ideal navigator in congested urban centers. AWD is a plus. With the NX vault of safety features, parents can feel secure in rewarding their graduates with any level of NX.

Amping up the performance for the F Sport might be overkill. The NX is better as an electrified choice than a performance vehicle.

I am a proponent of a plug-in that can be recharged while driving. But at what cost? There is a $15,815 starting price separation between the NX 450h+ PHEV and the hybrid NX 350h AWD. Is there enough green value to the NX plug-in pricing, or will buyers bank the price difference for gasoline?

Let me know which model you would buy and why. Email me at MarkMaynard@cox.net.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. Using a camera and millimeter-wave radar, the pre-collision system can help detect and alert to a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist. If the driver does not react, the system can use automatic emergency braking between 7 and 110 mph.

Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking. If turning left in front of an oncoming vehicle, the system will issue a warning alert followed by automatic braking, which is functional during daylight hours.

Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist. Emergency maneuvers get an additional steering boost to prevent lane departure. The assistance functions between 25-50 mph, and the relative speed to the detected object is between 25-50 mph.

Emergency Driving Stop System. If the system detects no driver input for a time, audible warnings will alert the driver. If the driver does not respond, the system will slow the vehicle to a stop, keeping it safely in the lane. EDSS only operates when driving on expressways with DRCC and LTA activated.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist. Functional above 32 mph, LDA w/SA will issue audible and visual alerts if an inadvertent lane departure is detected. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system will initiate gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance.

Proactive Driving Assist. Using a camera and radar, PDA monitors distance control between a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. The system will engage gentle braking and steering into curves as needed.

Road Sign Assist. A camera detects speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs. A signage icon is displayed in the driver gauge array and head-up display.

All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Radar and cameras work to maintain the preset speed and distance from vehicles ahead. If the car gets closer than the preset distance, the system will automatically slow or stop it. When the road ahead clears, the vehicle returns to its preset speed.

BY MARK MAYNARD

The Lexus UX 300h is a sip of teacup luxury among small, hybrid crossovers — but it is not everybody’s cuppa. This littlest Lexus in the U.S. goes where bigger SUVs rub shoulders in a crowded urban landscape. Its nameplate defines its mission as an “Urban Explorer.” The UXh earns respect for its gasoline-electric hybrid mileage ratings of 44 mpg city, 40 highway, and 42 mpg combined.

It is ideal for young, well-employed motorists living in a planned development with no parking or slim garage space. The UX is a sturdy small car built on Toyota’s TNGA-C platform, shared with the Toyota Corolla Cross (among other models). Both vehicles are five-seat, five-door subcompact crossover SUVs that use the Toyota Prius drivetrain.

The UX 300h is more luxurious than the more practical and affordable Corolla Cross.

Sharing a Toyota architecture provides an extensive network of standard safety features and technologies, including Proactive Parking Assist. Engage this technological shoehorn when trolling for a slot to fit the 14.7-foot-long UXh. This advanced driver assistance system uses sensors, cameras, and software to help squeeze into a space.

Lexus UXh hybrid competitors include the Alfa Romeo Tonale, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLB, and Volvo XC40.

UXh Body Style

Flared front and rear fenders and large wheels pushed to the corners present a strong stance. And the expansive spindle grille can only be Lexus.

The bobbed rear-end styling is somewhat awkward, but the “Aero Stabilizing Blade Lights” are unique. The lighting treatment begins at the top of the rear fenders and spans the vehicle’s rear. Red taillight lenses stick upward like a fin. At night, a sequence of 120 LEDs taper toward the center.

The rear fascia guides airflow around the rear of the UXh to reduce turbulence and lift. A wing-type spoiler at the roof’s rear edge and a flat underbody contribute to aerodynamics for fuel efficiency.

Lightweighting is achieved by using aluminum for the side doors, fenders, and hood. Composite materials are used for the tailgate.

2025 Lexus UX 300h Pricing

The 2025 Lexus UX 300h lineup consists of four trim levels in front- or all-wheel drive. All variants have the same hybrid powertrain and a continuously variable transmission with an EV mode.

2025 UXh starting prices range from $37,715 to $47,750. For $1,570, you can add all-wheel drive to any trim level. Suggested retail pricing includes the $1,175 freight charge from Miyawaka, Fukoka, Japan.

Standard 2025 Lexus UXh equipment is below the specifications chart.

Today’s tester is the topline 300h F Sport Handling AWD, which costs $49,670. It has four options: a $900 head-up display, $595 premium paint (Ultrasonic Blue Mica), and $350 bi-tone paint. The kicker is another $75 for a wireless charging pad. But why? Shouldn’t that be among the standard features of a nearly $50,000 subcompact SUV crossover?

The UX 300h F Sport Handling has just two factory packages. The Cold Area package, $100, adds a windshield wiper de-icer, and the Special Appearance Package, $180, adds a rear black emblem overlay and black window trim surround.

F Sport Handling Upgrades

UX 300h F Sport Handling is the top trim level for 2025. It has some desirable features, including:

  • Power moonroof;
  • NuLuxe trimmed upholstery and Washi dashboard trim (styled on the grain of a paper, known as ‘washi,’ familiar from the ‘shoji’ paper sliding doors of traditional Japanese houses.
  • Heated and ventilated front seats and heated steering wheel;
  • Power front seats with driver memory presets;
  • Aluminum front door scuff plates;
  • Power adjustable steering column;
  • Adaptive variable suspension;
  • 18-inch split-five-spoke alloy wheels with black and machined finish and run-flat tires;
  • LEF fog and cornering lights;
  • Power rear tailgate with kick sensor;
  • Body color fender overriders;

Looking at the 196 horsepower hybrid engine

All UX 300h trim levels have the same 196-hp hybrid powertrain. (Mark Maynard)

UX 300h Powertrain and Fuel Economy

The fifth-generation Lexus Hybrid System pairs the inline 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine with two motor generators or three for all-wheel drive. The e-CVT uses shift-by-wire technology, which converts shift operations into electrical signals. Lexus says this setup helps enable quicker and more seamless shifting.

Both electric motors charge the lithium-ion battery (an upgrade from last year’s nickel-metal hydride battery). The 60-cell battery is under the rear seat.

With the 83 kW front motor and the rear 30 kW motor, total horsepower is 196. With that, Lexus cites 0-60 acceleration in 7.9 seconds AWD and 8.0 seconds FWD.

The e-CVT has drive modes of ECO, Normal, and Sport. An EV drive mode allows battery driving at low speeds for short distances. The F Sport Handling adds paddle shifters and drive modes of Sport S, Sport S+, and Custom.

Unfortunately, the F Sport handling did not whisper to punch up Sport or Sport+. Instead, my performance level in Normal was just fine.

The E-Four all-wheel-drive system connects through a permanent synchronous motor at the rear axle. Lexus claims near-instantaneous power, even in low-grip situations.

Fuel economy estimates are 44 mpg city, 40 highway, and 42 mpg combined. In a week of mostly urban driving, I was happy with 39.1 mpg. But the previous best mpg for the test car was 44.8.

With the 10.6-gallon tank, a cruising range of 400 miles is possible. 87 octane fuel is recommended.

UX 300h F Sport Ride and Handling

The UX 300h isn’t particularly fun to drive when jockeying for lane space on the interstate. But the fun of its personality emerges in how slick it scoots around town. The adaptive F Sport-tuned suspension gives nimble handling, but the ride is a mix of soft springs and stiff shock absorbers. It is jolting over rough streets.

Standard on all UXh models are 18-inch run-flat tires.

The UX 300h F Sport was not quiet at highway speeds, something even a cranked audio system could not block out. Maybe it’s the Bridgestone Turanza run-flats?

Interior Function

The driver area is smartly designed with easy-to-see and touch controls. The driver has open sightlines across the hood, at the side mirrors, and over the shoulder.

Its subcompact space will be limiting to taller drivers, but the flat-bottom F Sport steering wheel helps with thigh space. Headroom with the moonroof is just 35.75 inches, or 37.28 without.

There are five USB ports, two Type C in the front shift console and two in the back, with a Type A in the front armrest console. But a wireless charging pad is a $75 option?

The bench seat is short on thigh support, and there is narrow footroom through the doorway.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

The Lexus treatment is slightly more luxurious in the front seat, but second-row materials are full Toyota and look cheap in a $40K car. Conveniences include two charging USBs, grab handles with jacket hooks, and a center armrest with can holders.

I would not recommend the UXh as a ride-share vehicle. The bench seat is short on thigh support, and there is narrow footroom through the doorway. Legroom of 33 inches is only OK if the front seat is pushed forward, so everybody is cramped.

Front-drive UX trim levels get the nifty 2-level double-decker rear cargo deckboard, adding around 3 cubic feet of space. However, the adjustable deckboard is unavailable on AWD models, which use the space for the third electric motor. Consequently, the usable space is shallow, but folding the seatbacks adds a broad, flat space.

Cargo space of 17.2 cubic feet has shallow usable space.

Safety Features and Technologies

Including 10 air bags, the Lexus UXh is well-armed for city and highway driving by the Lexus Safety System+3.0. Among its advanced technologies are:

Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection. To help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorcyclist, provide an audio-visual forward collision warning. If the driver does not react, the system will engage automatic emergency braking at speeds between approximately 7-110 mph ;

All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). Radar and camera technologies help keep the vehicle at a preset speed and distance from vehicles ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic;

Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist. Adds more steering force during an emergency maneuver;

Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking. Gives a warning and automatic braking if turning left in front of an oncoming vehicle in certain daytime conditions.

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA). Provides active steering assistance and helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane;

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, LDA w/SA.

Star Safety System includes:

VSC — Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control;

TRAC — Traction Control;

ABS — Anti-lock Brake System;

EBD — Electronic Brake-force Distribution;

BA — Brake Assist;

SST — Smart Stop Technology;

AHB — Automatic High Beams;

PDA — Proactive Driving Assist.

Why Buy the 2025 Lexus UX 300h?

Rather than going full F Sport Handling, with its hard ride and overkill performance features, consider the UX 300h F Sport Design. Starting at $43,235. It gets all the desirable F Sport design treatment without the sport-tuned suspension.

For a young person getting out of a hand-me-down Camry, the Lexus UX 300h will be a prestigious upgrade. Lease it for a couple of years, then trade up to the Lexus NX 350h or NX 450h plug-in hybrid. This compact-class SUV crossover has starting prices of about $42,000 to $50,000, including an F Sport Handling AWD.

BY MARK MAYNARD

Iconsider myself a card-carrying, sport-tuned car enthusiast, but a test week in an Ultra Luxury Lexus ES hybrid reminds me of a kinder and gentler driving experience.

As America has fled to sport-utility vehicles, many motorists have forgotten the simple pleasures of a well-done, four-door sedan. Automotive marketers believe their buyers are young and athletic trendsetters who want everything all at once. They disdain wagons and prefer SUVs to fit their lifestyle, even if they only use them as a station wagon. Buyers are teased with speed-line images of sporty-ish SUVS or adventure-tempting trail runners. Blacked-out trim, low-profile tires on black wheels, and dual exhaust tips deliver an outward message that this driver just rolled out of a pricey cologne advertisement.

Toyota’s luxury division Lexus has made the SUV transition, too. It now offers just three sedan body styles (IS, ES, and LS) — and 14 choices of sport utility vehicles, from subcompact to full size, with powertrains of gasoline, gasoline-electric hybrid, or plug-in hybrid.

There is still a heartbeat in the sedan segment, and the midsize Lexus ES has been the brand’s best-selling sedan for 15 years. Toyota has filled the ES lineup with 14 trim levels! Buyers can choose gasoline-electric hybrid powertrains, four-cylinder, or V-6 with starting prices from about $44,000 to $53,000, with some offering all-wheel drive.

Some popularity of the Lexus ES is its size-to-luxury factor. And any sedan will cost thousands less than a comparably sized SUV and get better fuel economy.

Front headroom of 37.4 inches with the moonroof should be acceptable to most 6-foot-plus drivers.

Sedan vs. SUV

Motorists favor the raised ride height in an SUV but not so much the leg up to climb aboard. And then there’s the stiffer suspension to balance the weight and, with it, the jiggle, jarring, and head waggle of awkward road dips and transitions. Marketers refer to the rougher ride quality as “sporty,” and who doesn’t want to be considered sporty?

There is a confident swagger to sedans that has been bypassed in the rush to an SUV. However, not all midsize sedans are created equal. The Lexus ES is especially enjoyable because it is not extremely low riding and has unobscured sightlines for the driver. Other makers lowered their sedans to help nurse aerodynamics for fuel economy ratings but, in so doing, lost interest from buyers who complained of restricted headroom.

The big incentive for the 2024 Lexus ES 300h is its fuel economy: 43 mpg city, 44 highway, and 44 mpg combined on 87 octane. Fill its 13.2-gallon tank and hit the road for a possible 580 miles. Using Eco mode, I saw 44.5 mpg consistently while driving on the highway at 65 to 70 mph. Careful drivers might eke out a few more mpgs. Compare your vehicle at FuelEconomy.gov.

With that mileage, the ES 300h is a comfortable half-step into the electrified vehicle space.

Lexus ES In the U.S.

Now in its seventh generation, the Lexus ES had its U.S. debut in 1989. It is the second vehicle in the Lexus lineup and is based on the Toyota Camry. The second-generation ES ran from 1991 to 1994, with updates for 1995 and 1996. The third generation came out in 1996 for the 1997 model year, with a refresh for model year 2000. The fourth generation ran from 2001 to 2006, followed by the fifth generation for the 2007 model year, with a midcycle facelift in 2010. The sixth generation, 2012 through 2018, was moved to the architecture of the full-size Toyota Avalon, which had a roomier cabin. Also added was the hybrid ES 300h.

The seventh generation of the midsize sedan will be redesigned in 2025. It will then transition to the Lexus Interactive infotainment system and new driver-assistance and safety technology. The F Sport trim and all-wheel drive were also added for the seventh-gen model.

2024 Lexus ES Pricing

Powertrain choices for the 2024 Lexus ES are:

  • 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four cylinder;
  • 302-hp 3.5-liter V-6;
  • 215-hp gasoline-electric hybrid.

Four-cylinder Lexus ES 250 gas models have starting prices that range from $43,190 to $47,775, including all-wheel drive.

Lexus ES 350 gas models range from $43,190 (same as the entry ES 250) to $49,650 for the ES 350 F Sport Handling.

There are five trims of the ES 300h (hybrid), all front-wheel drive and ranging in price from $44,590 to $50,885 for the ES 300h F Sport Handling. The 300h F Sport is fully youth-enized with such style features as 19-inch gloss-black wheels, black grille, thumping 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio, and more advanced technologies, such as Intuitive Parking Assist and an option for Adaptive Variable Suspension. (Toyota does excellent engineering for smoothness in its AVS).

Today’s tester, a Lexus ES 300h Ultra Luxury, is the most expensive of the three Ultra Luxury hybrid trim levels. Its pricing starts at $53,480, including the $1,150 freight charge from Georgetown, Ky. This trim level has just three factory option packages: the 17-speaker, 1,800-watt Mark Levinson audio system ($1,080), triple-beam LED headlights ($1.215), and SmartAccess card key ($100). But there are many accessory choices, ranging from trunk and floor liners ($130-$190) to a dash cam ($375-$550), and around 20 Kurgo pet accessories.

Lexus warranty coverages are extensive, including 8 years or 100,000 miles for the hybrid system. Coverage includes the hybrid control module, hybrid battery control module, and inverter with converter. The hybrid battery has coverage of 10 years or 150,000 miles.

The 215-hp gasoline-electric powertrain in the Lexus ES 300h.

Powertrain and Performance

The gasoline-electric powertrain in the Lexus ES 300h integrates a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle, D-4S direct-injected four-cylinder engine with a 259-volt lithium-ion battery pack of 70 cells and a high-output, permanent-magnet, electric-drive motor. (D-4S uses direct and port fuel injection for a more complete and clean fuel burn. Here’s a D-4S explainer.)

Lexus says that total horsepower of 215 hp and maximum torque of 163 foot-pounds at 3,600 rpm is sufficient to launch the ES 300h to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. There might be quicker midsize sedans, but the ES 300h does not feel power starved — except in Eco mode around town — and the acceleration uptake between 45 to 55 mph is sharp for freeway merging.

With a curb weight of 4,740 pounds, or closer to 5,000 pounds with a passenger or two, most owners will not object to 8.1 seconds, especially with 44 mpg.

An electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, e-CVT, simulates six gear shifts with complete smoothness.

ES 300h Ride and Handling

Close the door, shut out the noise of life, and just enjoy the drive.

The steel-spring suspension and the tester’s Adaptive Variable Suspension heft the curb weight without dive or wallow. Performance through sweeping exit arcs is controlled and confident — refreshing for a hybrid sedan. Four-wheel power discs have generously sized 12-inch ventilated rotors at the front and 11.1-inch solid rear rotors.

The tester’s 18-inch Bridgestone Turanza EL 440 grand touring all-season tires were not as quiet as I would have expected of a Lexus. The tires felt hard across seams in the road and uneven pavement. When replacing these Bridgestones, consider the Michelin Primacy Tour A/S or Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus Elect. Bridgestone Turanza replacements run about $300 a piece, while the Michelin Primacy Tour and Pirelli P Zero are around $250. Check Tire Rack.com for details.

Driver Assistance Finesse

Toyota and Lexus are leaders in their technologies for semi-autonomous driver assistance systems.

The package of technologies in the Lexus ES 300h — Lexus Safety System-plus 2.5 — gives consistent lane centering and holds true in cornering. However, when driving into sunlight, the system gets confused when the highway markings are obscured by glare or washout. In such situations, the car might follow dark lines on the concrete surface or struggle to determine the lane. These situations are common to all such semi-autonomous systems by all makers, so driving in assist mode must always be with both hands on the wheel. And the Toyota-Lexus system will only tolerate one-handed driving for a short period before firing off a warning.

ES Interior Function

There are large car proportions to the interior of the Lexus ES. The entry height is comfortable without a duck-and-drop maneuver. Headroom of 37.4 inches, with the sunroof, should be acceptable for tall but not overly tall drivers.

Sightlines are uncompromised over the shoulder and at the side mirrors, which are offset from the body (not attached to the windshield pillar), providing a snip more visibility and reduced wind noise.

And there is no fussy joystick controller to access cabin controls. Instead, a broad dash-top touchscreen is easily viewed in all light conditions.

Ultra luxury in the ES 300h is defined more by the long list of conveniences and technologies than a pampering experience. But the cabin has all the amenities for long-term rewards, such as heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and semi-aniline perforated leather upholstery. The materials used in the cabin are modern and contemporary with appealing textures, such as the stylized gray wood trim, though some Toyota-grade plastics with rough edges can be seen in lower areas, such as door panel pockets.

The front seats have hours-long support, with a 14-way power driver seat with a seat-cushion extender. The passenger seat is 10-way power adjustable with lumbar support.

Back-seat legroom is long at 39.3 inches, and it is not cramped when tall people are up front. Rear seatbacks are at a comfortable angle, which also helps with headroom, 37.4 inches.

Trunk space of 13.9 cubic feet is typical of a midsize sedan, but the seatback does not fold to expand capacity. However, there is a ski passthrough.

Why Buy the 2024 Lexus ES 300h?

I like chrome trim on a car, and I cannot lie. But I like high fuel economy and luxury.

My Ultra Luxury ES 300h tester came in the elegant paint hue of Moonbeam Beige, but I call it gold. Vapor Chrome wheels pulled all the styling elements together for a classy-looking experience.

Hybrid warranty coverage provides long-term security. After 8 years, this owner will be ready for the next new Lexus ES hybrid.

If the 2024 pricing is too steep, the same model from 2020-2023 is a good alternative. Shop dealership websites for the Certified Preowned Lexus ES 300h.

BY MARK MAYNARD

Lexus flipped the switch for its electric-vehicle future with the 2023 RZ 450e midsize SUV. The RZ is the brand’s first purpose-built battery-electric vehicle that will be available throughout the U.S. and globally.

Built on the e-TNGA platform shared with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the RZ will go on sale this spring. Sizewise, the RZ is technically a small SUV, but it splits the segment between a super-compact and midsize.

Sold in two all-wheel-drive trim levels with two wheel sizes, RZ 450e starting prices range from about $61,000 to $66,000. Because the RZ and BZ-Solterra are built in Japan at the Motomachi Plant (in Toyota City), none qualifies for the federal tax incentive of $7,500. State and local incentives, however, might be available (details below).

Both models have a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack for total system horsepower of 308. RZ’s DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system has two eAxle motors, a 150 kW front motor and an 80 kW rear.

Entry models with 18-inch wheels have an EPA-estimated electric driving range of up to 220 miles and an MPGe rating of 115/98/107 city/highway/combined. Models with 20-inch wheels have an EPA-estimated range of up to 196 miles or an MPGe of 102/87/95.

“RZ” stands for “Radiant Zero,” such as for “shining” and Zero Emissions. Similarly, Toyota uses BZ for Beyond Zero to brand its battery-electric vehicles.

In a full year of RZ 450e sales, Lexus says it hopes to sell 4,900 units. In the U.S., there are around 240 Lexus dealerships.

The RZ interior has a minimalist design theme with new materials and special lighting to create a luxurious impression.

6 Intriguing RZ Features

Steering By Wire

The steer by wire system uses a yoke rather than a wheel. The optional system is still be tested and refined by Lexus engineers.

Steering by wire uses a yoke rather than a wheel.

The optional steer-by-wire system eliminates the mechanical steering column to the front axle and, with it, the transfer of vibration. Instead, electrical signals communicate steering inputs for much quicker steering response. And instead of a steering “wheel,” Lexus uses a steering yoke. A yoke will help train drivers to use smaller steering inputs rather than hand-over-hand movements to rotate a wheel. The system’s steering ratio constantly adjusts to the speed of the vehicle. Steering by wire provides more “agility in slow-speed situations and impressive stability at higher speeds,” Lexus says.

The steer-by-wire system also has a different gauge cluster that sits higher (1.5 inches) and farther away (1.4 inches) from the driver. The change in positioning is to minimize the driver’s line-of-sight movement.

Dealerships will provide initial testing to familiarize owners before sending them down the road. And it will take time for new users to adapt, but not just to the quicker steering response.

It was an odd initial experience in my testing of the yoke system. That was primarily due to my muscle memory of rotating a wheel. The yoke requires the driver’s hands to be in a 9-and-3 position. There will be fewer positions to rest hands on longer trips.

The system, however, is still being refined and is expected to be available in the U.S. at a future date. Pricing has not been set.

Electrochromic Dynamic Sky panoramic roof

The electrochromic Dynamic Sky panoramic roof changes from opaque to clear at the touch of a button.

The electrochromic Dynamic Sky panoramic roof changes from opaque to clear.

All models of RZ have a panoramic glass roof, but the Luxury model has the option ($550) of an electrochromic function. The so-called smart glass transitions from opaque to clear at the touch of a button at the top of the windshield header. The goal is to eliminate the need for a sunshade.

Radiant Heating

The optional radiant heaters are positioned at the base of the dashboard to heat front passengers’ legs and feet.

The optional radiant heaters are positioned at the base of the dashboard.

It takes less energy to heat occupants than to heat the entire cabin, so Lexus added radiant heating for the front seat, standard in the Luxury model. The heaters at the base of the dashboard warm legs and feet and are in addition to seat heaters (and ventilation).

Radiant heat might have more value to buyers in colder regions. The radiant heater on the passenger side replaces the glove box, removing any interior locking storage.

With the loss of the glove box, materials that typically are kept in the glove box, such as owner’s manuals, can be stored in the under area of the shift console peninsula. But even this space required an adjustment. To help keep items from slipping off the shelf and into the driver’s foot space, the console has about a 2-inch taller lip on the driver’s side versus an inch lip on the passenger side.

Shadow Illumination

Embedded lighting in the door panels is used in the RZ 450e to create a sense of luxury.

Embedded lighting is used in the RZ 450e to create a sense of luxury.

Part of Lexus’ plan to redefine luxury is using shadow illumination. The upper front door panels are embedded with a span of light that creates a decorative pattern. Trouble is, the pattern is only visible at night. During the day, the door panels are rather bland looking. In the Luxury model, users have a choice of 50 ambient interior colors and 14 themes.

Vortex Generators

Vortex Generators at the end of the roof are intended to channel air flow down the glass to sweep away rain.

Vortex Generators are intended to channel air flow down the glass to sweep away rain.

At the roof’s end at the back glass, the so-called vortex generators channel airflow down the glass, eliminating the need for a rear wiper arm. In theory, the downward flow of air could be effective at highway speeds. But in town, those vortex generators will do nothing to clear away rain, heavy morning dew, or frost.

Illuminated Logo

An illuminated front logo, $200, also lights up when the RZ is charging.The RZ will be recognizable at night by the optional lighted front Lexus logo, $200. The logo also illuminates when charging.

RZ Incentives and Rebates

The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e does not qualify for the Federal Electric Vehicle Tax Credit because it is built in Japan, not the United States. And because Lexus and Toyota have exceeded the government’s 200,000-unit limit. However, the RZ does qualify for some state and regional perks. The California Clean Fuel Reward amount has been temporarily reduced to $0 from $750.

As of this posting, information for the California Clean Vehicle Rebate for the Lexus RZ 450e was unavailable. When active, the rebate was $2,000. Participants are eligible based on gross annual income, as stated on their federal tax return.

Toyota created this incentive finder for federal, state, and municipality incentives.

The RZ 450e also qualifies for California (and other states) High-Occupancy-Vehicle freeway access, with the green DMV decal

Lexus Reserve

This new Lexus Reserve program aims to reduce “range anxiety” for drivers who don’t want to plan a driving trip around stops at charging stations. RZ 450e owners and lessees can rent another Lexus vehicle from their dealer for free. The program provides 30 days of a rental that can be used for three years from the date of purchase or lease. RZ 450e owners also will have access to a concierge guest experience to answer BEV questions.

Lexus RZ Buyer Demographics

Lexus expects the target customer for the RZ 450e will be:

  • Highly educated professionals and city and suburban residents;
  • Higher than average household income of $175,000-plus;
  • Older millennials and couples or families, with an even split of male and female buyers.
  • Lexus loyalists moving up from the comparably sized RX SUV or compact NX, and Toyota-brand move-ups.
  • First-time EV buyers who waited to make an intentional, refined choice.

Redefining Lexus Luxury

Lightweight materials are essential when building an EV. The lighter the curb weight, the farther the battery range. But the traditional materials that define a luxury car are heavy — leather upholstery, wood or metallic trim, and extensive power-operated features.

Instead, Lexus presents new interior design and materials, with special lighting effects to create a luxurious impression.

NuLuxe synthetic leather (half the weight of leather) is the standard upholstery in Premium models. And manufactured Ultrasuede fabric is standard for the Luxury. Luxury models also have access to an optional Tsuyasumi film, which has a shiny charcoal effect on the center console.

The minimalist interior treatment, however, might not appeal to the traditional buyer accustomed to Lexus’ pampering features.

More standard features are highlighted in the specs box at the end of this story.

Interior Function

There are five USB charging ports in the RZ cabin. Three USB Type-C ports with a wireless charger are on the lower instrument panel. Back-seat passengers have two Type-C USB ports at the base of the center console.

A standard 14-inch touchscreen has high-definition clarity for infotainment, navigation display, and the panoramic view monitor. The Luxury adds a 10-inch-wide head-up windshield display.

Tall headroom of 39.8 inches with the pano roof is spacious enough for 6-foot-6 occupants. Legroom is a comfortable stretch at 42.1 inches.

Driver controls are traditional with intuitive function and reach. And sightlines are open at the side windows and across the hood. Rearward views are slim out the back glass, but the panoramic view camera system is a great enabler in tight parking situations.

There is a standard 10-speaker sound system or an optional 13-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound system.

Back seat space is reasonably accommodating, but legroom of 38 inches is not limo-like, depending on who is sitting ahead.

The fast slope of the roof crops some cargo space, but Lexus says there is width for a golf bag at the tailgate entry. Or fold the second row for up flat space of 48 cubic feet.

Back seat legroom of 38 inches can be tight when tall occupants are seated ahead. Shown is the Palomino NuLuxe upholstery.

Driving the RZ

At the recent media launch in San Diego, journalists could drive both trim levels of RZ in 18- and 20-inch wheels. The RZs were preproduction models but appeared production ready. Still, it is the procedure for preproduction media vehicles to be well-prepped for the perception of full function. The production version, however, might have differences. The following observations came after driving various short routes in the area.

The first thing prospective buyers will notice about the RZ 450e is its styling. Lexus embraced its “spindle” grille treatment but as a complete spindle body design. The RZ exterior is a movement of angles, arcs, and aerodynamic twists and turns.

Noise Calmed Cabin

Once buckled in place, the second aspect of the RZ will be the cabin’s quietness. Lexus is proud of its ability to filter out unpleasant noise and harshness. In my experience, this cabin might be the quietest of any in the high-luxury segment. The quiet is so penetrating that it is relaxing.

While the Premium model is luxuriously calmed, the Luxury model adds acoustic front and rear side window glass for the vault feel.

Another quieting aid is the tires. For the stable ride quality Lexus wanted, the RZ has staggered-width tires, wider at the rear. The Luxury model preserves its hushed cabin with ultra-high performance Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 060 20-inch tires 235/50. These are soft and grippy tires. But know that the treadwear rating (UTQG) for these ultra-performance Dunlops is a low 280. That number translates to a tread lifespan of around 25,000 miles or so. And plan on purchasing snow tires for driving in winter weather.

The Premium model is fitted with 18-inch Bridgestone Turanza EL450 (235/60) all-season touring tires. The Turanza EL450 has a more durable treadwear rating of 400. For a UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grading) comparison, a midsize all-season touring tire for a crossover SUV will have ratings as high as 700 to 800.

Parking is uncomplicated with a turning circle of 36.8 feet or a little more with 20-inch tires. And there is the Advanced Park system as part of the $1,475 Technology package. Use Advanced Park to find and automatically park horizontally or nose-in. The package includes the Digital Key app and the 10-inch head-up display.

The Luxury model rolls quietly on 20-inch ultra-high-performance Dunlop tires.

RZ Safety Technologies

Under its skin, the RZ 450e has an advanced neural network of safety and driver-assist technologies. Lexus’ driver-assist systems are among the most steady and predictable for lane-centering and vehicle control, without frightening alerts to potential intrusions from other vehicles.

Leading the lineup of tech is the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. Among its assist features are:

PCS — Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection.

DRCC — All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control: In highway driving, the adaptive cruise system uses radar and camera technology to help keep the vehicle at a preset speed and distance from vehicles ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic.

CSM — Curve Speed Management, within DRCC. A new feature to help manage speed in curves when cruise control is engaged.

LTA — Lane Tracing Assist. Lines on the road or a preceding vehicles give active assistance to keep the vehicle centered in its lane;

LDA w/SA — Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist;

PDA — Proactive Driving Assist: Initiates gradual braking into curves or braking and steering to maintain distance control between the vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist;

Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist: Objects in the lane can be avoided by gentle braking and steering under certain daytime conditions;

Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking.

Lexus RZ Powertrain

The Lexus RZ 450e has a total system power of 308 hp, generated by two dual permanent-magnet synchronous motors. The dual-motor setup has a 150 kW motor at the front and an 80 kW rear. Transferring power is a single-speed e-Axle.

Either model, Lexus says, can launch to 60 mph in 5 seconds.

A “skateboard” style battery pack is positioned under the floor, extending from about the engine-bay firewall to just ahead of the back seat. The 96 cells of lithium-ion batteries generate 355 volts for total battery power of 71.4 kWh; the battery capacity is 201 Ah (ampere-hours).

Lexus uses water-cooling and water-heating systems to protect the battery pack from temperature swings.

RZ acceleration can be brisk and forceful, depending on how hard the accelerator is used. RZ performance can be manipulated by four drive modes of Normal, Sport, Eco, and Range. Range mode switches off the air-conditioning system and applies a more rear-wheel-drive bias.

I’m always conservative when driving an EV, but Sport is a go-to in heavy traffic to help guard my line.

There is no “e-pedal” driving, in which the vehicle can be slowed to a stop by lifting off the accelerator pedal. Instead, paddle shifters at the steering wheel can be used to vary the amount of regenerative braking force.

Lexus RZ Charging Times

Under ideal conditions, the RZ can fully recharge in about 9.5 hours with a Level 2 charger, and from 0-80 percent in approximately 30 minutes with a DC fast charger.

The RZ comes with a Level 1 vehicle-charging cable for 120-volt outlets. And all models are equipped with a Combined Charging System (CCS) socket for at-home and public charging.

For at-home charging, most Lexus dealers offer an option to purchase a ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 charger ($749, not including installation) at the dealership or directly from ChargePoint. ChargePoint Home Flex is Energy Star certified and Wi-Fi connected. The charger can be installed indoors or outdoors and comes with a 23-foot charging cable. The home charger can add up to 25 miles of range per hour and fully recharge the battery when plugged in overnight.

For help in charger selection and installation, Lexus recommends Qmerit.

The installation service can help locate a certified electrician to install the EV charger and provide an initial free quote. Customers will be provided information on Qmerit during their purchase checkout process at participating dealers.

Curb Weights

Heavy electric cars are not always dynamic to drive. While the RZ is not exactly sporty in its handling, sportiness was important in suspension engineering.

Lightweighting features and technologies in developing the RZ have made it among the lighter EVs in its size segment. The RZ weighs 200 to 300 pounds less than competitors such as the Volvo, Mustang Mach-e, or the VW ID.4. The RZ weighs a whopping 1,296 pounds less than the Cadillac Lyriq.

The RZ Premium model weighs 4,586 pounds with 20-inch wheels, and 4,619 pounds for the Luxury model. Hefting that weight smoothly is a challenge, especially with SUV height. But the suspension engineering creates a truly svelte ride quality. There is no objectionable bottoming-out jounce and rebound as the dampers adjust to catch and control the heave of weight.

RZ Suspension, Steering, Braking

The RZ suspension is not overly sophisticated. It is comprised of front MacPherson-type struts and a rear trailing arm multi-link configuration. Both assemblies are tuned and located for handling balance, roll posture, and ride comfort.

At the rear, Frequency Reactive Dampers alter the dampening force on the extension stroke in response to road surface frequency input. The FRD works to provide a high level of handling stability, Lexus says.

Also neatly dialed in with the suspension are the steering response and braking engagement. The drive-by-wire steering is constant in turns, but I could not discern any road feedback.

Four-wheel ventilated disc brakes have 12.9-inch front rotors and 12.5 inches rear. The regenerative braking has no on-off effect as the brake pedal is applied and pushes through to the engagement point. Drivers will value the smooth engagement when nosing their RZ into a parking space with a vehicle or wall ahead.

Reinventing the Wheel

The automotive industry is in the middle of a once-in-a-century transition from internal-combustion propulsion to electric. And Lexus, too, is in a pivotal moment of major transformation, said Greg Kitzens, Lexus marketing GM.

Lexus aims to sell fully electric vehicles worldwide by 2035, with the hope of selling 1 million EVs globally in 2030, Kitzens said at a recent media test drive. (According to industry reports, Toyota targets global sales of 3.5 million EVs in that time frame.)

Electrified vehicles are not new to Lexus. The brand launched its first gasoline-electric hybrid RX SUV in 2004 and today has seven hybrid or plug-in electric vehicles in its lineup.

Electrification of existing Lexus and Toyota vehicles was the faster route to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to help slow climate change. The world’s largest automaker is now being criticized for not launching more battery-electric models.

It was a simple business plan, with some consideration of the planet, Kitzens said on the sidelines of the RZ media drive.

“The battery resources to build one battery-electric vehicle could instead be used to build six plug-in electric Lexus vehicles or 90 gasoline-electric hybrids,” Kitzens said. He was citing research by Gil Pratt, Toyota Motors’ chief scientist and executive fellow for research.

Today, Toyota Motor is at work on a wholly re-engineered, next-generation platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles arriving in 2026. It is a “BEV-first mindset,” but with a balanced approach that will include plug-ins and hybrids.

With lithium as scarce as it is, automakers can reduce carbon emissions more quickly through a multipronged approach to electrification that includes hybrids rather than focusing exclusively on fully electric vehicles, said Pratt in an Automotive News report.

Why Buy the Lexus RZ 450e?

The RZ 450e doesn’t set any charging speeds, driving range, or powertrain efficiency benchmarks. But Toyota and Lexus focus on the real-world range for reliability and battery life.

Don’t get hung up on competitors’ claims of 300 or more miles of battery driving. With a home charger, it really doesn’t matter if your EV has a range of 200 or 350 miles. You’ll both meet at the public charging station on a long driving trip.

Either RZ model is favorably priced as a luxury electric SUV.

A nicely equipped Premium model will cost around $63,415. A nicely optioned Luxury model with such extras as two-tone paint ($1,200), the cold-weather package ($200) and another $200 for the illuminated Lexus grille logo, and the Dynamic Sky roof ($550) will run $67,300.

For the $3,885 pricing difference, I prefer the Luxury model for the complete Lexus luxury treatment.
