BY MARK MAYNARD

The V8-powered, 500-horsepower Audi SQ7 is engineered for connectivity. Not digital connectivity so much as the relationship connection between driver and vehicle. It is a spidey sense of clear communication. It begins with the handshake of the steering wheel, followed by the welcome aboard rumble of the 4.0-liter V-8 on start-up. The electronic air suspension conducts a seat-of-the-pants conversation, helping the driver know how each axle and tire are performing.

This is European muscle, not the raucous hoonigan style of American muscle cars.

The three-row SQ7 is the performance pinnacle in Audi’s three-trim Q7 line, including turbocharged four- and V-6 engines. All of the goodness in the SQ7 also pours into the two-row SQ8 with its sportback roofline. And the SQ8 has a higher performance model in the 651-hp RS Q8. Starting at $137,495, it is a blink faster to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

There is as much utility as there is sport to the SQ7’s elite performance. After all, it is a family-class SUV at heart, built from the Audi Q7. All-wheel drive is standard, or Quattro in Audi-speak.

The SQ7 is rapid transit with a second-row bench, a passable pair of third-row seats, and formidable cargo capacity. The Q7’s straight roofline provides much usable space.

There are few competitors in this $100,000 Euro club. Starting at $98,195, the SQ7 is a throwdown to the BMW X5 M ($125,975) and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S ($130,800).

The front sport seats are bolstered but not so steep as to rub on entry or give a wedgie on exit.

Elite, Elevated, and Executive Class

The SQ7 is a performance package of purpose, not pretense. The exterior design is executive calmed. There is no boastful badging, exaggerated fender flares, razor-thin tire sidewalls, and wild wheel styles. Only red brake calipers and dual quad exhaust tips hint at its show of force. There is no screaming attraction of 1 percent wealth, though at $122,000, the tester is an elevated choice. The SQ7 is at peace in the church parking lot, dropping kids at school, or loading up at the home-improvement warehouse.

If needed, the Christmas tree can be lashed to the roof (with the optional crossbars). And the muscle-bound SUV can tow up to 7,700 pounds with the optional hitch and wiring harness ($750).

Driver sightlines are refreshingly wide open at the side mirrors and over the shoulder. A low and short dashboard opens forward views. A low shoulder line, mirrors offset from the body, and corner glass are assets when carving through S turns. For nose-in parking, the split-view camera shows the exact footprint and nearness to a wall, car, or shrubbery. Should the driver get distracted, the safety system gives a mule kick of brake force to protect the grille area. And the SQ7 has a complex fascia with camera lenses, sensors, and grille work.

Audi Q7 Lineage

The 2025 Audi SQ7 is primarily a German-bred and raised SUV. 28 percent of its parts are from Slovakia, where the Q7 has been built since its debut in 2005. Another 1 percent are from the U.S. or Canada.

Audi’s largest SUV in North America shares a strong family lineage. It is built on Volkswagen’s MLB platform with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne, and VW Touareg.

Audi has a larger luxury SUV, the Q6, that is sold primarily in China. Audi refers to this Q6 as a “land jet.” However, this Q6 is mechanically unrelated to the battery-electric 2025 Q6 e-tron sold in the U.S.

In the U.S., the first Q7 was first released as a 2007 model. Audi gave the Q7 several mild redesigns from 2010 to 2015. The second-generation Audi Q7 went on sale in 2015, followed by a mild redesign in 2020.

A low angle view of the front end

New grille inlays are L-shaped on the SQ7.

What’s New In the Redesign?

As Audi concentrated on introducing its electric e-tron models, the Q7 went unchanged until 2024 as a 2025 model. Much of the second-gen facelift is cosmetic but meaningful. Exterior updates range from new front and rear fascias, and OLED rear lights with selectable light patterns. Upper trim levels include digital daytime running lights. Inside, Audi upped the connectivity features.

On the outside, Audi’s singleframe octagonal grille has vertical inlays, visually extending its height, Audi says. The inlays have a teardrop shape on the Q7 and are L-shaped on the SQ7. The new grille contours help emphasize the elevated placement of the headlights, with the front end anchored by color-framed air intakes.

Three new metallic exterior colors were added: Sakhir Gold metallic, Ascari Blue metallic, and Chili Red metallic. All the metallic colors are $595 each, but Ascari Blue and Chili Red are SQ7 only.

Audi has maintained a tastefully forceful and enduring exterior design for its Q7 and SQ7. It is the interior, however, that needs a redesign.

Interior Changes

For 2025, the Q7 45 entry model has seam-stitching trim in a contrasting gray color. The Executive package ($1,800) adds dual-pane acoustic glass, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rear sunshades, four-zone automatic climate control, and traffic sign recognition. The SQ7 has new Carbon twill matte interior inlay.

Audi adds some red-mist attitude to the top-line SQ7 Prestige in the Sport Crimson Red package ($500). Red elements include seatbelts and red stitching on the seats, center armrest, door armrest, and center console.

Owners of previous generation Q7 will appreciate the new connectivity technologies. For the first time, multimedia apps, like Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube, can be downloaded from the Audi app store.

Audi also includes online navigation services and Traffic Light Information for 3 years at no cost. And there is a 6-month trial for streaming services and full-speed Wi-Fi.

5 Cool SQ7 Features

  • HD Matrix-design LED headlight with Audi Laser light. Standard on the Prestige trim, the laser beam pattern is active at speeds above 39 mph. High-beam headlight technology uses a blue laser to extend visibility. A small laser module in each headlight generates a blue cone of light that can extend hundreds of yards. The laser light is converted into a soft light with a color temperature of 5,500 kelvin, which is ideal for the human eye.
  • Four-wheel steering.
  • Power soft-closing doors.
  • Acoustic laminated windshield and dual-pane acoustic side glass.
  • Headlights with digital daytime running elements. The DRL has four selectable light patterns for a more personalized appearance. For the first time, the SQ7 Prestige adds digitalized OLED (organic light emitting diode) rear taillights. This lighting, too, has four digital light signatures.

Audi Q7, SQ7 Powertrains

All Audi Q7 and SQ7 models have Quattro all-wheel drive. Three different powertrains are available:

  • Q7 45 features a 261-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
  • Q7 55 has a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger.
  • SQ7 features a mighty biturbo 500-hp 4.0-liter V-8 engine. The sophisticated V-8 features a cylinder-on-demand system. When coasting or on extended downhill grades, the engine runs on four cylinders. Tip into the throttle, and the engine seamlessly switches to full force.

All Q7 55 and SQ7 models boast a towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds, adding significant practicality.

2025 Audi SQ7 Pricing

Offered in two trim levels, the entry-level SQ7 Premium Plus starts at $92,095, and the uplevel SQ7 Prestige starts at $98,195. Manufacturer suggested retail pricing includes the $1,295 freight charge from Bratislava, Slovakia. Today’s SQ7 Prestige tester came to $122,840.

The Prestige package, $6,100, includes:

  • Dual pane acoustic side glass,
  • HD Matrix-design LED headlights with Audi laser light,
  • Headlight washers,
  • Head-up display and traffic-sign recognition,
  • Heated rear seats,
  • Intersection assist,
  • Memory presets for front passenger seat,
  • OLED taillights,
  • Soft-closing power doors,
  • Remote park assist,
  • Sunshades for rear side door and tailgate,
  • Ventilated and massaging front seats.

Safety Features

Standard Q7 safety features include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning. See the specifications chart below for the full list.

In the United States, the Q7 received five out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety test for front and side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Q7 its Top Safety Pick 2009, with Good ratings in all 14 measured front and side impact test categories.

A quick check for recalls at NHTSA.gov shows nothing significant.

Cargo corner cubby houses the power seat and suspension controls to lower the ride height.

The cargo area corner cubby.

Interior Function

With an easy step-in height, the driver area is a functional, hands-on experience. The short and low dashboard (rather than “cab forward”) allows clear sightlines. There are unhindered cornering views at the corner side glass and side mirrors that are offset from the body. Drivers will appreciate the openness when cresting a rise at speed when what’s on the other side could be a sharp turn or a truck. In town, there is no blockage of pedestrians in crosswalks.

Headroom with the panoramic sunroof is a tall 39.9 inches, with front legroom of 41.7 inches. The front sport seats are bolstered but not so steep as to rub on entry or give a wedgie on exit.

The interior is richly rewarding in décor but lacking in interior storage spaces. The center console is wide but has meager cup holders that are best suited for cans. There is no open space to drop a phone, and the make-do cup holders cannot keep a phone from falling out. However, door panels have slots for large bottles.

While there is wireless charging, the pad is under the console armrest. That’s not a huge issue because cabin-monitoring electronics give an audible reminder that your device is still in the vehicle.

3 Screen Array

Cabin and driving information are a three-screen array. The 12.3-inch “Audi virtual cockpit” is a high-definition digital instrument cluster. It can be configured with a map display, a sportier treatment, or the basics.

In the center stack are upper and lower screens. The top is for the camera system, navigation, phone, and media selections. The lower screen is for climate control. There is just one physical knob for volume control, an enduring Audi feature. The screen graphics are large and readable for digital adjustments for heat, AC, and fan speeds. The various settings give a tactile “thunk,” a response that helps keep eyes on the road.

Looking into the second row seats

The second-row legroom of 38.8 inches is comfortable for adults.

Second and Third Row Seating

With a max of 38.8 inches, second-row legroom is adult comfortable, at least at the window seats. With a 40/20/40 seat split, the tall center exhaust-driveline hump compromises footroom at the slim center seat. Reclining seatbacks and a B-pillar vent add to traveling comfort. The Prestige trim has fully functional climate controls for temperature, vent direction, and seat heaters.

The pair of third-row 50/50 seats are short on legroom (29.2 inches) but good for the school carpool. The seats are power-raised or lowered from the cargo area, and the seats fold flat for extended carrying capacity.

Second-row seats tilt and slide for entry-exit from the way back. And those in the third row have power seatback releases.

The pair of third-row seats are short on legroom but good for the school carpool.

Cargo Space

The cargo space has usable dimensions. Fold both rows of seatbacks for 6 ½ feet in length, with 29 ½ inches in interior height. Entry at the power liftgate is 4 feet wide.

A control corner is especially handy, with switches to lower the ride height and power fold the third row. The corner notch also has a net, a bag hook, a light, and a 12-volt plug.

Looking into the open cargo area with seatbacks folded.

Fold both rows of seats for about 6 ½ feet in length.

SQ7 Performance

Hit the start button, and the V-8 gives a rumble and rev. At idle, the 4.0-liter ticks quietly like a four-cylinder. The V-8’s bravado is unobtrusive in easy driving. But punch up Dynamic mode, and the pipes open for a thunderous report.

Fuel-economy ratings on the required premium fuel are 15 mpg city, 21 highway, and 17 mpg combined. Around town, my average mileage was 10 to 13 mpg. On highway cruising, it stretched to 17.6 mpg. Mercifully, there is a 22.5-gallon fuel tank.

Audi claims 0-60 mph acceleration in a believable 4 seconds. The 4.0-liter’s 568 foot-pounds of torque make it so.

The eight-speed Tiptronic transmission is an ideal match with the V-8. Shift points are well-timed, and there is no hesitation when evasive acceleration is needed. In Dynamic sport mode, the shift response is competition grade, with strong downshift engine revs. But for a quick hit of Sport, tug the shifter back a notch. Toggle the shifter right for manual shifts.

Get Out, Get It, and Get Home

It was a quiet Monday morning when I drove out to a favorite backcountry run. The tangled shoelace of two-lane county road has soaring views and second-gear S turns. The morning rush was over, and school buses were already unloading. Now was the time to deglaze the brake discs.

Anticipate the need for power, cock the trigger, and engage. Aiming into a tight S, the SQ7 hoovers through the turn. The gutty below of the twin-turbo V-8 under pressure is invigorating and tingling. Remember to breathe, and look ahead to the next turn.

The black optic wheel package ($1,500) added 22-inch summer tires on attractive multispoke, bi-color S-design wheels. The tester’s Continental SportContact 6 tires, 285/35, are grippy-soft with a very low treadwear rating (UTQG) of 240. These tires are 10.7 inches wide and were original equipment on Audi’s high-performance R8 V10 Plus. Owners will need a second set of winter tires.

These max-performance Continentals give a lush ride quality, and try as I may, the tires would not whimper in aggressive driving. Enjoy them because replacements run around $500 each.

Looking at a closeup of the The optional 22-inch Continental SportContact 6 tires

Ride and Handling

The SQ7 is heavy—5,291 pounds at the curb, before factoring in the weighty items in some of the tester’s options. When powered up and rolling, there is no sense of heft or lean. It feels nimble and agile. Audi steadies its SQ7 sex jet with adaptive air suspension, active roll stabilization, and progressive steering. Audi pays much attention to creating a low-friction ride, which also benefits fuel economy.

While some air suspensions become jittery over rough road surfaces, Audi’s adaptive air suspension provides control and balance. Head toss at driveways or speed humps is composed. The ride quality is a true air ride.

The electromechanical progressive steering system with all-wheel steering has infinite degrees of control. The weight is two-finger easy while circling the mall parking lot and stable and precise in open cruising. At speed, the all-wheel steering helps tuck in the rear. In town, the steering system cuts the turning circle from 41 feet with standard steering to more like 38 feet. Audi doesn’t break out steering specs for four-wheel steering. However, I had no concern about curbing a wheel on my residential street.

Some of the SQ7 heft comes from vault-class side doors, but there is no slamming with soft-closers in the Prestige package. An acoustic glass windshield and side glass add some weight, but it is worth it for the traffic-calmed cabin. The extended leather in the Luxury package ($3,700) adds a few pounds and is also worth it.

This weight, like fat on a prime steak, adds flavor and pleasure, making ownership a rewarding experience.

The wide tire face is 10.7 inches wide.

10.7 inches wide.

Observations and Considerations

Accessing cruise control and the various semi-autonomous driving modes are via the old-style lower stalk on the steering column. For owners new to the Q7, it will be helpful to have a dealership tutorial, or at least to read up on how to use the system in the owner’s manual.

48-volt lithium battery. The highly sophisticated electronics in the SQ7 require the power of a 48-volt lithium battery. The battery does not assist in traction but powers the belt alternator starter (start/stop system) and other elements like the electromechanical active roll stabilization. If your SQ7 will not be driven for extended periods, the battery will gradually drain. Monthly charging is recommended, per the owner’s manual. Should the battery die, replacements must be done at the dealership. A new battery will cost around $1,800, not including dealership labor for installation and electronic configuration.

Crappy visor coverage at driver’s left. The shallow visors are most problematic with a low sun angle morning or evening. The visors have dual flaps to swing to the left but are not particularly beneficial.

Back door ashtrays in the door-side armrest? There would be no smoking in my $122,000 SUV.

Why Buy the 2025 Audi SQ7?

I like that the SQ7 is executive elite but does not require an advanced degree in Information Technology to learn how to use it. At its core, it is hands-on driving and oh-so enjoyable.

For buyers in this high-performance segment, what’s another $24,645 to get the best of Audi? Most buyers will lease rather than buy, which is smart with all the sensors, pricey tires, and a 48-volt battery.

Why Buy the 2024 Buick Envista?
Specifications

BY MARK MAYNARD

The Buick Envista tooling past me on the highway was a glint of whoa-what-is-that? Its fastback shape looked European. It looked aspirational. It looked expensive. I changed lanes for a better look. Why do I not know this car, looking so smart in its pearlescent metallic white?

This new-for-2024 Envista “sport coupe crossover” is the smallest Buick and the first Buick to adopt the brand’s new design language. It carries over some styling elements of the compelling Wildcat EV concept.

The Buick Wildcat EV concept.

Buick’s sex-jet Wildcat EV concept.

The 2024 Envista is a new Buick nameplate and a comfortable fit as a subcompact-plus small SUV. It is a corporate GM platform partner with the Chevrolet Trailblazer. However, the big separator of these GM SUVs is Envista’s distinctive styling and Buick’s more premium interior treatment.

Competing five-seat subcompact SUVs include the Chevrolet Trax, Mazda CX-30, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and Volkswagen Taos. While most competitors have a powertrain option for all-wheel-drive, the Envista is strictly front-wheel drive. However, Buick’s other subcompact SUV, the Buick Encore GX, does have an AWD option.

Buick has structured an E nameplate series: Envista, Encore, Envision (a compact-class SUV), and Enclave (3-row, V6-powered SUV).

2024 Buick Envista Pricing

The Buick Envista is available in three trim levels, all front-wheel drive. All trims have a 137-hp turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Also standard for all trims is a single-panel digital display that combines an 8-inch screen for driver instruments and an 11-inch infotainment screen. Below is the price walk:

Preferred, $24,590. Standard features include black leatherette upholstery, 17-inch silver painted wheels, and 3 years of OnStar Remote Access.

Sport Touring, $25,690. Standard features include black leatherette upholstery with Santorini Blue stitching and ST embossed headrests, 18-inch black-painted wheels, a wrapped steering wheel, gloss black side mirrors, and body-side trim moldings.

Avenir, $29,695. Standard features include perforated leather-trimmed upholstery (in black with terracotta stitching or gray with Whisper Beige stitching), and 19-inch pearl nickel alloy wheels.

Retail manufacturer pricing includes the $1,095 freight charge from Bupyeong, Korea.

There is a choice of eight Envista paint colors, but only Summit White is a no-cost color; six hues are a $495 option. White Frost Tricoat is $1,095 but $600 for Avenir.

Today’s 2024 Envista Avenir is $31,090 with the advanced safety package, $795, and White Frost Tintcoat, $600. The advanced safety package is worthwhile for its upgrades of:

  • Adaptive cruise control;
  • Rear cross-traffic alert;
  • Lane-change alert with side blind zone alert;
  • Power, heated side mirrors with turn signals;
  • Rain sensing intermittent wipers.

Check current Buick special offers here. At publication, there was an ultra-low-mileage lease for the base Preferred trim level. The 2-year/20,000-mile lease is $219 monthly, with $3,439 due at signing.

Safety Features and Technologies

Envista safety features include six air bags (with Passenger Sensing System that automatically switches on or off the front passenger seat when no occupant is seated), front seat knee bolsters, StabiliTrak electronic stability and traction control, and hill start assist.

Safety technologies include the standard Buick Driver Confidence package of:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking;
  • Front Pedestrian Braking;
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning;
  • Forward Collision Alert;
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • IntelliBeam auto high-beam assist.

The Avenir advanced safety package, $795, adds driver assistance technologies for lane change alert with side blind zone alert, adaptive cruise control, and rear cross-traffic alert.

A cropped image showing LED headlights and amber LED running lights

Envista has LED exterior lighting, including those amber running lights. Headlights are below.

Interior Function

There is simple, no-stress access to getting comfortable behind the wheel. It is a position of confidence.

With its subcompact-plus size, the front-seat area of the cabin feels roomy, with broad shoulder room of 56 inches, door to door. Front headroom of 39.4 inches, without the moonroof, should fit most 6-foot drivers. A flat-bottom steering wheel improves thigh space for larger drivers. The Envista wheel has a non-leather wrap with elaborate stitching. I liked that the 9-and-3 spokes of the steering wheel have channel-changing and audio volume buttons.

Sightlines are refreshingly open over the hood and at the ellipse of the rear window. Side mirrors offset from the body add visibility when turning, and the design helps reduce wind turbulence and noise.

With a new dashboard design, there is ergonomic order and smart placement of switches and controls. Special features include a single-panel digital display that combines an 8-inch screen for driver instruments and an 11-inch infotainment screen.

Envista has a slim shift lever on the slim center console. There is not much “drop” space on the console, and cup holders are small.

Looking into the back seat of the Envista with back doors open

Max legroom of 38.7 inches seems long, but the bench is short.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

While front-seat space feels more compact class than subcompact, the back seat feels more subcompact in dimensions. Max legroom of 38.7 inches seems, but the bench is short. The flat floor accommodates three across seating to drive colleagues to lunch. There is no seatback recline, but the fixed angle is comfortable.

Duck your head when slipping into the back seat to allow for the low roof contour.

Useful back-seat amenities include:

  • Large door panel stash space with bottle slots;
  • Dual types of USB ports (A and C);
  • Wide, padded fold-down armrest with can holders.
  • The trailing arc of the fastback body takes away some height for big-box cargo capacity. However, the 20.7 cubic feet of space behind the back seat is functional for a young driver or family. The cargo area entry is about 3 feet wide, with almost 3 feet to the seatback. Fold the 60/40 back seat for up to 5 ½ feet in length.

Envista Powertrain and Performance

No Sport mode, no paddle shifters, no problem (mostly).

Envista is a hustler with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. The turbocharged and direct-injected engine spins up 137 horsepower and has a usable torque of 162 lb.-ft. from 2,500-4,000 rpm. Power is sent forward through a six-speed automatic transmission.

The diminutive engine’s torque, the pulling force in the low to mid rev range, makes the engine feel more potent. Acceleration from the 1.2-liter three-cylinder is responsive away from the traffic light. However, performance lags when cruising along to keep the power underfoot. There is no Sport mode, so it takes a heavier foot for a transmission kick down. Highway cruising is competent, but anticipate your need for passing power.

Official fuel-economy ratings are 28 mpg city, 32 highway, and 30 mpg combined. Regular unleaded fuel is recommended. According to the onboard computer, my average fuel economy over the test week was 25.6 mpg with a best of 42.1 mpg.

GM uses this 1.2 liter — its smallest engine in North America — in the Buick Encore GX and Chevy Trailblazer. However, both vehicles have a slightly more powerful engine upgrade in the 155-hp 1.3-liter. This somewhat larger choice would reinforce more of Buick’s “premium” position.

“Compared to previous generations of our 1.2L Turbo engine, this version is lighter and uses fewer parts, which reduces the overall vehicle weight, increases efficiency, and creates nimble ride and handling,” said Scott McLane, lead development engineer, Buick Envista.

An open hood view of the 1.2-liter 3 cylinder engine

Ride and Handling

Buick’s QuietTuning and active noise cancellation are rewarding technologies in this small sport-coupe SUV. Zipping along the interstate at 70 mph, conversations are comfortable without raised voice volume.

Push hard through corners, and the all-season Continental ProContact tires grip without squeals of protest. These Continentals are premium all-season touring tires with a comfortable treadwear rating of 500. The tires have a 65,000-mile limited warranty and are pricey to replace at around $250 each.

A long wheelbase (106.3 inches) helps with a settled highway ride. However, the torsion beam rear suspension transfers jolts over potholes and rough city streets.
The long wheelbase with 18- or 19-inch wheels pushes the turning circle to 38.4 feet. That span is awkwardly wide for a “subcompact” vehicle. With 17-inch wheels, the circle is a foot shorter.

The standard Buick Confidence Package includes driver-assistance technologies, such as lane-keep assist with lane departure warning.

To get full semiautonomous driving requires the Avenir Advanced Safety package, $795. It adds adaptive cruise control, including lane change alert with blind zone alert.

Always keep hands on the wheel when using this semiautonomous mode. Lane centering is not accurate and lets the Envista drift wide in interstate cornering. However, the suite of safety systems is well worth the $795.

Observations and Considerations

  1. There is a lot of black plastic throughout the cabin. The Avenir, however, is dressed up with multiple grain patterns and engaging “zicka” lines on the door panels from the dashboard. Avenir’s padded dash pad has a line of copper stitching, which continues onto the seat trim aesthetics.
  2. Power windows have an auto-down function but no auto-up, which is a silly budget issue.
  3. Visors do not slide.
  4. Front seat belts have no height adjustment; some will not like the position of the seat belt at their neck.
  5. The front passenger seat has no power adjustments. That is another compromising budget measure that detracts from “premium” for a $30,000 price.
  6. No rear wiper! Buick (and other makers saving a few dollars) seems to think that rain will blow down the rear glass while driving. However, the large back glass will still accumulate dirt and grime as it sits, and somebody will need to clean it. However, I’m not sure I would want a rear wiper because it would clutter up the gorgeous rear-end design. The shapely front end has the same dilemma when affixing a license plate to the Avenir’s attractive black-chrome ice grille treatment. (Michigan does not require a front license plate.)

BY MARK MAYNARD

The Kia EV9 electric SUV looks like a digital traveler from an alt dimension. This midsize, three-row crossover makes a futuristic impression on the EV landscape of so many awkwardly designed vehicles.

The EV9’s boxy, triangular blueprint spearheads Kia’s “Opposites United” design language. Inside and out, the treatment is a thorough and thoughtful presentation for a next-generation family SUV crossover. Bristling with electronic features, the EV9 is high-voltage but not intimidating to drive and enjoy.

This SUV’s refinement and accommodation are important to Kia — the brand’s electrified future rides on its shoulders.

“The EV9 is a beacon that points to the future of an electrified lineup for Kia as a mobility leader,” Sean Yoon, president and CEO of Kia North America and Kia America, said in a statement.

Built on Kia’s E-GMP architecture for electric vehicles, the EV9 uses fourth-generation, 800-volt battery technology.

“Lightweighting” helps compensate for battery weights of 1,021.4 and 1,248.9 pounds. High-strength aluminum was used in areas such as the hood, tailgate, front bumper rail, and extruded side sill.

The EV9 interior uses several sustainable and non-leather materials, including SynTex upholstery.

The EV9 interior uses several sustainable and non-leather materials, including SynTex upholstery.

Competing 3 Row Electric SUVs

The segment of electric three-row SUVs is largely uncharted territory. The main comparables are the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and Rivian R1S. Both of those SUVs cost significantly more than the Kia EV9 for about the same size footprint and energy package.

The EV9 is now the brand’s flagship SUV and its largest vehicle to date. At 197.4 inches in length, it is slightly longer than the Kia Telluride SUV, but it is comparable in height (up to 70.1 inches) and width (77.9 inches).

Front headroom, legroom, and cargo capacity are comparable to the EQS and R1S. However, Kia’s EV9 cabin carves out more front shoulder and hip room, 61.6/59.4 inches. Those dimensions compare to the Rivian R1S at 60.6/54.9 and the EQS at 59.5/56.5. (See more EV9 specifications below.)

The EV9’s long wheelbase (122 inches) and flat floor benefit rear seating foot and leg room.

EV9 Fundamentals

The 2024 Kia EV9 is offered in five trim levels, rear- or all-wheel drive, with standard or long-range batteries. Entry rear-wheel-drive models are powered by a 76.1 kWh hybrid battery with an EPA-estimated range of 230 miles. The 99.8 kWh long-range battery pack provides around 304 miles of range.

Standard features on all trim levels include:

  • Onboard power generator (V2L) to use the hybrid battery for small appliances, charging systems, and multimedia devices;
  • Driver assistance technologies;
  • Smart power liftgate;
  • Heated and ventilated power front seats;
  • SynTex seat upholstery;
  • LED projector headlights and LED tail lights. (Land and GT-Line trims are upgraded to Cube Projection LED headlights with digital pattern lighting grille);
  • Kia Connect (formerly UVO) uses cellular and GPS navigation connections for remote features and services. These include locking and unlocking the vehicle, using the smartphone digital key, charging, Find My Car, and recovering stolen vehicles.

2024 Kia EV9 Pricing

Choose the driving range and starting price:

EPA-estimated range of 230 miles — EV9 Light RWD $56,395, with 76.1 kWh hybrid battery. Standard features include SynTex seat upholstery in black and gray, second-row bench seat, and 19-inch wheels. The Light RWD has no factory packages and paint colors are limited to four choices, two of which are $695 options.

304 miles of range — EV9 Light Long Range RWD $60,695, with 99.8 kWh battery. Features include six-passenger seating, second-row Captain’s chairs, and heated and ventilated front seats.

280 miles of range — EV9 Wind AWD (long range) $65,395, with dual motor e-AWD and 99.8 kWh battery. Standard features include dual sunroofs, a heated steering wheel, and a heat pump, which pulls less energy than radiant cabin heating.

280 miles of range — EV9 Land AWD $71,395 (long range), with heat pump. Features include second-row Captain’s chairs (heated and ventilated), 20-inch wheels, and driver’s seat relaxation mode (power leg rest).

270 miles of range — EV9 GT-Line $76,390 (long range), with heat pump. Features include power front seats with relaxation mode leg rest, a premium headliner, and second-row Captain’s chairs (heated and ventilated). Hardware features include self-leveling rear suspension, 5,000-pound towing capacity, and high utility roof rails. Exterior features include Cube Projection LED headlights with digital pattern, dual sunroofs, and 21-inch alloy wheels. Choose from nine paint colors, four of which are no-cost; the others are $695 or $995.

Manufacturer suggested retail pricing includes the $1,495 freight charge from Gwangmyeong, Korea.

EV9 GT-Line Powertrain and Performance

All EV9 models use a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a single-speed reduction gear automatic transmission. The shift-by-wire transmission has regen brake paddle shifters, and performance modes of Sport, Eco, Normal, and MY (for driver preferences).

The single-motor (RWD) Light has 215 hp and 258 foot-pounds of torque from 0-4,200 rpm. (The Light Long Range has 201 hp.) The EV9 Light has acceptably safe 0-60 mph acceleration in 7.7 seconds, per Kia. Its 76.1 kWh lithium-ion battery can be recharged to 80 percent in 63 minutes using a DC 50kW fast charge. That’s 20 minutes faster than the 99.8 kWh battery in all-wheel-drive models.

The Wind and Land AWD with 99.8-kWh battery can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and 5 seconds in the GT-Line.

Looking at the open charge door on on the right rear fender.

Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes less than 25 minutes for the base model, but 83 minutes for the Ev9 GT-Line.

Kia recommends AC charging to keep the high-voltage battery in optimal condition. For owners with a 240-volt 48-amp home charger, a full recharge would take 8 hours and 45 minutes. In my experience, it would take 2 hours or less to top off a battery after a day’s errands.

However, with a total range of 230 to 300 miles, only 80 percent of that is easily recharged at high-speed chargers. That means 80 percent of 280 miles is shortened to 224 miles, making road trips an endurance drive. The high-speed chargers slow down after reaching 80 percent, sometimes taking another hour to hit 100 percent.

gloss black 21 inch wheels on the GT-Line

The EV-9 GT-Line with 21-inch smoked black gloss alloy wheels and Hankook Ion Evo all-season tires.

EV9 GT-Line Ride and Handling

The EV9 GT-Line smoothes the four-wheel-independent suspension with rear leveling shock absorbers. The suspension has a slight feeling of heft as it manages the EV9 curb weight of 5,800 to 5,886 pounds. Yet, there is just a gentle dip of the shoulder in turns. Rough patches of gator-back are mitigated without transferring harshness to the cabin.

I especially like the extended blink-to-pass turn signals. Rather than the usual three-blink, these continue to blink until the driver has completed the lane change.

Kia assured a secure footprint for its EV9 GT-Line with 21-inch Hankook Ion Evo all-season, 285/45. (Other EV9 trim levels have tire sizes of 19 and 20 inches.) The tester’s smoked black gloss alloy wheels have a handsome design of digital and futuristic.

These Hankooks are designed for electric vehicles. Despite a firm treadwear rating of 500 (UTQG), the tires did not feel hard or noisy.

Electric SUVs are hard on tires because of their hefty curb weight, and replacement tires can be pricey. Online sources indicate pricing for the 21-inch Hankook Ion Evo all-season of $300 to $400 each, not including installation. There is no temporary spare, only a “tire-inflation” system of sealant and a pump.

Hankook Ion Evo all-season, 285/45, with Sound Absorb technology; treadwear rating of 500; spare tire sealant kit.

The tires have a firm treadwear rating of 500 (UTQG), which translates to a 50,000-mile warranty.

Those 21-inch tires also extend the turning circle. Kia lists a turning circle of 40.6 feet for 19-inch tires. However, the span with 21s is awkwardly wide for maneuverability in tight parking situations. For the more expensive EV9 models, rear-wheel steering would be worthwhile.

The GT-Line front passenger seats have extendable “relaxation” leg rests.

Electric and Somewhat Sustainable

Kia has attempted to use sustainable materials that owners see and feel. Among them:

  • Non-leather SynTex polyurethane seating surfaces;
  • BTX-free interior trim, in some areas. (BTX is an abbreviation for aromatic chemical products called benzene (B), toluene (T), and xylene (X).
  • Partially recycled materials are used for some fabrics and carpets.

 EV9 Safety Technologies

Among nine air bags is a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems. The Level 2 semi-autonomous driving proved trustworthy in my interstate driving. The assistance actions are settled with accurate lane centering and are not prone to alarming alerts.

Included tech for driver assistance:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2;
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Highway driving assist
  • Park distance warning: forward, reverse, side
  • Parking Collision Avoidance Assist-Reverse
  • Navigation-based smart cruise control-curve.

Cool EV9 Features

  • Onboard power generator (V2L), for recreational or emergency use of appliances, chargers, or media devices.
  • Hidden-until-lit haptic switches for key infotainment features.
  • Star Map LED animated Digital Pattern Lighting Grille.
  • Over-the-air software updates;
  • Ultra-wideband-based digital key. Use this handy smartphone “key” to hand off vehicle use to family or a friend;
  • Flush door handles automatically extend when the key-holder approaches.
  • Dual-level, floating center console stretches from the first to the second row.
  • Second-row sliding storage console.
  • Steering wheel LED lighting illuminates the Kia logo.

Interior Function

The Kia EV9 is a comfortable cruiser with open sightlines at the side mirrors and over the shoulder. Headroom with dual sunroofs is tall at 39.6 inches.

The GT-Line has eight-way adjustable front seats — and they are hours-long supportive. The power leg rests are more relaxing than I thought possible. Kia likes sporty front seats, but I could do with a cutdown driver seat cushion bolster. The stiff bolsters created an up-and-over sequence with a parting wedgie.

Wiper coverage is thorough from pillar to pillar. And sliding visors are another convenient asset.

Owners can use fingerprint authentication for multiple-driver presets and preferences. Touching the lens-like console sensor will load such preferences as seat and side mirror positions and infotainment choices. Owners without multiple users might not see the value.

Among the other GT-line distinctions is its creative décor of smoked chrome trim with matte chrome details.

And amid the generous door-to-door elbow room are thoughtful touches throughout the cabin. Among the budget-bending niceties are:

  • Headliner vents above the second and third rows;
  • “Chauffeur” seat controls to move forward the unoccupied front passenger seat;
  • USB ports in front seatbacks for second-row passengers;
  • Grab handles above each door, with coat hooks in the rear handles;
  • Jacket “hangers” molded into front seatbacks;
  • Reclining third-row seatbacks.
GT-Line Relaxation Package for reclining second-row seats with leg rest, $2,000.

GT-Line Relaxation Package for reclining second-row seats with leg rest, $2,000.

Back Seats and Cargo Space

Second-row passengers are treated to a maximum of 42.8 inches of legroom and the footloose freedom of a flat floor. The GT-Line’s Captain’s chairs are enviable with fold-down armrests and three-stage ventilated and heated. However, I was not comfortable using the “Relaxation” recline and foot rest, $2,000. The reclined seat position felt perched and narrow.

The front console connects in the second row for the sliding storage console.

The front console connects to the sliding storage console in the second row.

I do like the clever (and lighted) slide-out table on the back side of the extended front console. Below the tabletop, there is a storage bin and dual cup holders.

Also thoughtful are entry grab bars at the B pillars for the hoist-aboard, though the step-in height is moderate. The comfortable step-in makes the optional side step bars, $690, unnecessary, except for loading the roof rails. However, with the GT-Line’s high utility roof rails, accessory cross bars are a necessary $360 accessory.

The third row has tall headroom of 39.5 inches, but legroom is just 29.9 inches with the second-row relaxation captain’s chairs. However, with the non-relaxation captain’s chairs, legroom is a more comfortable 32 inches.

A view of the 2 person third row bench seat

Legroom of 32 inches, with second-row Captain’s chairs, is average for a three-row SUV.

Versatile Cargo Space

The EV9 offers versatile cargo functionality. The rear cargo space is 4 feet wide, 29 inches tall at the entry, and has a 32-inch lift to the floor. Fold the third row for 45 inches to the second-row seatbacks.

Cargo space extras include a 125-volt, 15-amp household power outlet and a 12-volt port. Some trim levels have a power-folding third row.

A front trunk, “frunk,” has 1.8 cubic feet of storage space. It is large enough to hold the cable for the onboard charger. How would you use it?

Walk briskly behind the “smart” power tailgate because it takes just a second to open. I was too lazy to go into the vehicle settings to cancel the automatic opening function.

Looking from the second row out the back of the EV9 with third row folded

There is versatile cargo functionality in the EV9.

Why Buy the Buy the Kia EV9 GT-Line?

The Kia EV9 will be a charmer on the test drive for those considering a three-row EV SUV. It conveys a sense of “Buckle up, and let’s go for a long ride.”

My EV9 GT-Line cost $78,430 with three options:

  • Ocean Blue gloss paint $695,
  • Second-row relaxation seats $2,000,
  • Carpeted floor mats $225, and carpet cargo mat $115.

While I liked some GT-Line extras, I could do without the 21-inch tires, increased tow capacity, and front passenger relaxation seat.

I would pick the EV9 Wind AWD (long range, 280 miles), $65,395, with 19-inch tires and second-row bench seat. The bench seat provides a larger flat cargo space. At the time of publication, there was a 24-month lease of $389 a month with $4,999 down. That does not include the $7,500 customer cash incentive.

A two-year lease will provide a good learning experience. Besides, there can be issues with a zillion electronic sensors zooming messages throughout. Be prepared. Some owners have had exemplary new-vehicle experiences. Others have had several problems that the dealership has struggled to solve. Some of that struggle is due to too few technicians certified to work on Kia EVs.

BY MARK MAYNARD

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is a bewildering example of “Second verse, same as the first!” The CX-70 is a new nameplate for the brand, but it is not, technically, a new vehicle. It is a variant of the CX-90 and largely unchanged except for having two fewer seats. Both 2025 CX models, on sale now, have several updates.

The CX-90 is a midsize, all-wheel-drive, three-row SUV crossover with six-cylinder or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The two-row, five-seat CX-70 is a perplexing addition because it has the same dimensions and powertrains as the CX-90.

Manufacturers often create variant SUV models, such as the Volkswagen Atlas and its variant, the Atlas Cross Sport. It is genius marketing because the “coupe” or sport variant crops rear interior space in favor of fashion. And the flashier body style can cost more.

Mazda made no body-style changes to the CX-70 but charges more for it—about $2,700 more than the gasoline-powered CX-90. The CX-70 PHEV (plug-in hybrid) has a larger price premium—$4,455 more than the CX-90 PHEV. However, Mazda says the CX-70 “has a higher level of equipment out of the box and has a slightly more streamlined list of trims, compared to CX-90.”

Deleting the third row only saved about 69 pounds, with no improvement to the fuel economy. But there is a lot of subfloor cargo space, with an optional organizer for $100.

Time will tell if buyers favor the CX-70 for its added cargo space or the CX-90 for its three-row functionality.

Engineered for Electrification

The CX-70 is built on Mazda’s large platform, shared with the CX-90, and engineered for electrification. The CX-70 has two powertrains featuring some form of electrification. The e-SkyActiv G 340-horsepower 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six engine integrates M-Hybrid Boost. The second choice is the advanced e-SkyActiv G PHEV, with the same charge-while-driving feature as the CX-90.

The salvation comes from a second plug-in hybrid model with Mazda’s e-SkyActiv PHEV powertrain. From my research, only Volvo offers a charging mode while driving for its XC60 T8 Recharge and XC40 Recharge SUVs. Volvo’s “Hold and Charge” function can charge and bank electric power for later use or charge the battery while driving.

Mazda’s e-SkyActiv PHEV powertrain consists of an inline four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery pack. The direct-injected 2.5-liter engine makes 189 hp with premium fuel or 185 hp with regular unleaded. The engine is paired with a 68-kW electric motor, which adds 173 hp and 199 lb.-ft. of torque at a very low 400 rpm.

Combined system power is 323 hp when using premium fuel or 319 hp with regular unleaded. Peak torque of 369 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm is the same with regular or unleaded fuel.

The CX-70 PHEV has an estimated battery-powered driving range of 26 to 32 miles and a combined driving range of 490 miles. That peak range, however, depends on the use of air conditioning, seat heaters, and other electronic features.

The dash-top infotainment screen has a 12.3-inch color display and 360-degree camera system with See-Through View and Trailer Hitch View.

2025 Mazda CX-70 Pricing

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 is sold in two turbocharged powertrains: a gasoline inline six-cylinder and a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid PHEV.

Inline-six-cylinder models are offered in five trim levels of CX-70 3.3-liter. Starting prices range from about $42,000 to $57,405, including the freight charge of $1,455 from Hofu, Japan. All CX-70 models are richly equipped with entry-luxury features and interior materials. Standard equipment includes:

  • Keyless entry;
  • Leather-trimmed upholstery;
  • Eight-way power driver seat;
  • Extensive safety features and technologies.

The six-cylinder powertrains are turbocharged with 48-volt mild-hybrid boost. An eight-speed automatic transmission helps stretch fuel economy. EPA mileage ratings are 24 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 mpg combined on the recommended premium fuel. The engine also functions on 87 octane but at slightly reduced power ratings.

The 2025 CX-70 PHEV plug-in hybrid is sold in two all-wheel-drive trim levels with eight-speed automatic transmissions. The entry PHEV Premium starts at about $56,000, with interior color choices of gray or black. Standard equipment includes 21-inch alloy wheels, a power sliding-glass panoramic moonroof, and a 12-speaker Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound System.

Today’s review of a CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus costs $59,275, with one option for Melting Copper paint, $450.

For a pricing comparison, the 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV has starting prices of $51,400, $56,355, and $59,405. Pricing includes the $1,455 freight charge.

CX-70 Options and Special Offers

There is a choice of six paint colors for both CX-70 models, but only Jet Black Mica is no-cost. Of course, there is Mazda’s special Soul Red Metallic, $595, and Rhodium White, also $595. My tester came in the striking Melting Copper Metallic, $450.

Worthwhile accessories include the retractable cargo cover, $275, and a cargo net, $60. The premium carpeted floor mats are appropriate for this luxury SUV, $240, rather than the standard carpet mats. I would also opt for the padded carpeted cargo liner, which cost $275. Besides protection, the padded mat can add a layer of soundproofing. Mazda also offers several accessories for pet access and seat protection.

At the time of publication, there were no special offers for the CX-70 PHEV. However, the CX-70 3.3 had a lease offer of $357 a month for 33 months, with $3,999 down. The term allows 10,000 miles a year.

There also was a purchase incentive of 3.9 percent financing for up to 60 months. Other offers include:

  • $1,000 Mazda loyalty reward;
  • $2,000 lease-to-lease reward;
  • $500 military appreciation for lease or purchase.

Mazda Warranty Coverages

Mazda might be moving on up to a premium level, but its warranty coverage is basic: 3-years or 36,000-miles. However, hybrid components, including the battery, have a warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles. In California, the hybrid battery has coverage of 10 years or 150,000 miles.

CX-70 Performance

All Mazda CX-70 models have turbocharged powertrains with M-Hybrid Boost, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with stop-start at idle.

Mazda’s plug-in powertrain integrates a turbocharged 2.5-liter e-SKYACTIV-G four-cylinder engine and a 68 kW electric motor. Total system power is 323 hp, and the battery-electric driving range is 26 to 32 miles.

The uplevel e-SKYACTIV G 3.3-liter gas Turbo S engine has 340 horsepower and 369 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm. Mazda recommends premium fuel for peak horsepower or 319 hp from 87 octane. It has fuel economy ratings of 23 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 mpg combined.

There is little mileage difference between the entry 3.3-liter Turbo engine, which has 280 hp and 332 lb.-ft. torque at 2,000 rpm using the recommended 87 octane. Its mileage ratings are nearly identical, with 24 mpg city, 28 highway, and 25 mpg combined.

The engine-motor bay has the upscale features of hood struts, not a prop rod. However, when the 12-volt battery needs a jump start, getting a solid connection will be a challenge. The battery is in the far left back corner under a plastic shroud. Pop it off for access, but there’s another cable in the way. The battery’s positive post is under a separate cap, making securing a clamp difficult. Mazda should have included a separate positive charging post somewhere convenient under the hood.

Why Use An Inline-6 Engine?

There are many reasons why Mazda moved away from a V-6 engine to an inline 6. (The six-cylinder is used in non-hybrid models).

Among the reasons, an inline-6 keeps the engine nice and narrow, a spokesperson said. The design creates slight efficiency in the powertrain. Also, with the CX-70’s double-wishbone front suspension, the inline engine benefits steering feel and stability, he said. However, it also has a wider suspension compared to more economical suspensions. And that also benefits a tighter turning circle because the turn angle was increased. Still, the turning circle with 21-inch tires is a broad 41.2 feet — a deal killer for me. Rear-wheel steering would be a good option if tire sizes get any bigger.

8-Speed Automatic Transmission

Power flow to the axles is rear-biased, channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Gas models have manual steering wheel shift paddles, while PHEV models use the paddles to adjust the regen deceleration force.

I experienced rough transmission shifts, sometimes on deceleration or electric mode as I rolled on power. Could that be a problem down the road?

Mazda says its plug-in hybrid has a comparable level of performance to the inline-6 models. Sport gives a more immediate launch force but is not aggressive. Get on the gas hard, and acceleration can be swift. However, passing power takes a heavier foot at speed on the interstate.

Multifunctional Performance

The e-Skyactiv plug-in system has multifunctional performance, Mazda says.
In Normal mode, the hybrid system will prioritize EV battery driving when there is sufficient battery charge.

When the battery’s charge is below 20 percent, the system will keep the gas engine fired to charge the battery to make EV assist available.

An EV mode can be engaged through the Mi-Drive controller on the shift console.
When the accelerator pedal reaches the kick-down switch, the gas engine can turn on in EV mode. When this occurs, the system puts CX-70 back into Normal mode for quicker acceleration.

The PHEV performance while on gasoline power felt the same as with the electric boost.

PHEV Battery Charging

Electric vehicle charging times, to 100 percent:

  • Level 1 (household 120-volt AC): 6 hours and 40 minutes;
  • Level 2 (240V AC): 1 hour and 30 minutes.

I have a Level 2 home charger in my garage, but I didn’t need it for this test. While driving in town, the e-Skyactiv system added charge incrementally. However, it is a lot quicker to charge at highway speeds, where it becomes a dollars-and-sense asset to commuters.

The CX-70 has a sturdy footprint from Falken Ziex CT 60R all-season tires, 275/45. There also is a temporary spare rather than an “inflation system.”

The CX-70 has a sturdy footprint from Falken Ziex CT 60R all-season tires, 275/45.

Ride and Handling

The CX-70 PHEV feels to be of robust construction. It is not sporty to drive, but it has confident handling under pressure and in evasive maneuvers.

For handling control, Mazda’s so-called Kinematic Posture Control applies light brake force to the inside rear wheel during cornering. Because the CX-90 platform is rear-drive based, KPC minimizes the tippy feel for more natural poise through corners.

Mazda does not use adaptive dampers to help smooth the ride. The steel spring suspension underpinning the CX-70 lays down a luxuriously compliant — almost carpeted — ride on smooth surfaces. But the attitude swiftly changes over rough roads with jarring impacts. There is much trucky head toss over speed bumps and driveway entrances. But that suspension is hefting a curb weight of 5,198 pounds.

The variable assist steering force feels overly firm at low speeds, at least too stiff for two-finger tooling through mall garage parking.

At speed on the interstate, the CX-70 is settled and confident.

I have grown to appreciate (and somewhat trust) Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assist in heavy traffic. These systems keep watch on the lanes and will work with navigation to speed up and slow the vehicle, usually to a stop in heavy traffic. Mazda has enhanced its driver-assist technologies for full Level 2 semi-autonomous driving.

The hands-on assistance is accurate in lane centering without a freak-out of loud alerts should an overtaking vehicle cut in too close.

An open studio image shows the whole interior.

Among the CX-70 safety features are eight air bags, hill start and hill descent assist, off-road traction assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keep assist.

Safety and Advanced Technologies

Mazda has armed the CX-70 with layers of safety features and advanced technologies.

Among the features are eight air bags, hill start and hill descent assist, off-road traction assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and front and rear parking sensors.

Driver-assist technologies are thorough, including:

  • Radar cruise control with stop-and-go and automatic speed limit adjustment;
  • Blind-spot assist;
  • Emergency lane keeping;
  • Traffic sign recognition (which does not require a data plan);
  • Secondary collision-reduction system;
  • Smart brake support reverse;
  • Front cross-traffic alert with front cross-traffic braking.

New to the CX models is Cruising & Traffic Support, an automatic system also called Unresponsive Driver Support. This emergency-only system will decelerate and stop the vehicle if it detects that the driver is unresponsive to escalating alerts.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 PHEVs have earned a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick. Read the report here.

The Crafted Cabin

Contemporary materials and harmonious colors and textures have a near-luxury presence throughout the cabin. Perforated Nappa leather seats in the Premium Plus model are supportive and comfortable for the hours between fuel stops. The steering wheel and shift lever are wrapped in rich, glove-soft leather.

The driver seat has eight-way power adjustments with a strong lumbar inflator. In the Premium Plus package, the front passenger also gets an eight-way power adjustment, up from the standard four-way power.

Most controls and readouts are ergonomically placed, with a functional mix of digital and manual buttons and switches. The 12.3-inch digital gauge array changes configurations according to the drive mode. Some categories, however, could be clearer to page through.

The 12.3-inch full-color center infotainment display is simple to access with the shift-console controller. It contains the usual lineup for phone connections, apps, navigation, connected services, audio, and other elements. The screen peeks above the center stack of AC and other climate controls, where the display is not prone to glare.

The rearview camera screen is divided into a broad view and an overhead view. Mazda has also added a unique “See Through View” for a wide-angle rear or front view.

The shift console is large and broad but constrained in space, yet there are other areas for small-item storage. The seatbelt reminder alert is especially annoying and insistent.

There are four charging USBs throughout the cabin, all of which are Type C. The wireless charging pad is in a nook at the base of the instrument panel. There is also a 12-volt plug at the charging e-bin for those with an older radar speed detector.

A door panel of the CX-70 shows the premium materials and precise assembly

The interior has an immaculate presence with quality materials and assembly.

Interior Function

There is full-bodied cabin space in the first and second rows. Because the PHEV’s battery pack is situated in the center of the floor structure, it does not compromise interior space.

Front headroom of 39.6 inches with the panoramic sunroof should suit most adults 6-foot-plus. With shoulder room of 59.2 inches (door to door), there is room to spread out while resting elbows on nicely padded armrests at the doors and center console.

Sightlines are unobstructed across the hood and out the back glass. Side mirrors are on the doors, not the windshield pillars, eliminating sightline issues while cornering. Spray-arm wipers are a smart feature for precise windshield cleaning.

Cabin soundproofing is traffic-calmed around town, but there is noticeable highway wind noise at the roof and side windows.

New for 2025 is Alexa built-in, a first for a Mazda crossover. Drivers can ask Alexa to change the temperature, the radio station, and even to control smart home devices.

Among the desirable features of the CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus are Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery, ventilated and heated front seats, and keyless locking with push-button start. The tester’s list of features and advanced safety technologies is in the specifications box below.

Looking at the open cargo area

Generous cargo space is 42 inches wide at the tailgate opening, with 50.1 inches in length behind the back seat.

The cargo area with a variety of materials and a big cooler

The padded carpeted cargo liner is a useful option, $275.

Colossal Cargo

All CX-70 models have a split 60/40 second-row bench with seatback recline and a center foldout armrest. (Only the CX-90 offers second-row Captain’s chairs.)

The second row has tall headroom of 38.4 inches and max legroom of 39.4 inches, with fore-aft slide and recline. Back doors open wide to almost 90 degrees, an asset when buckling toddlers in child seats.

With the back seat folded, the rear cargo space could almost fit a sheet of plywood. The liftgate entry is 42 inches wide and 30 inches tall. Fold the back seat about 8 feet in length.

A standard 1,500-watt converter is an uncommon perk and an option for most other makes. It is handy for powering an air compressor, device chargers, or other gadgets.

Also new to the CX-70 are power folding rear seats from two buttons on the cargo side wall.

The subfloor storage compartment option, $100

The cargo area sub-trunk has an optional organizer accessory, $100.

Why Buy the Mazda CX-70 PHEV?

There are more than a dozen choices of plug-in hybrids in many price ranges. Mazda’s CX-90 and CX-70 plug-in hybrids are unique for their on-road charging capability.

Mazda marketers say the 2025 CX-70 is aimed at well-off empty nesters. However, this roomy SUV crossover will appeal to any well-off owner, with or without children.

I am not convinced that a CX-70 has more appeal than a three-row CX-90. The third row folds flat, providing as much cargo capacity as the CX-70. I understand that Mazda wanted another CX in the showroom; I just wish it were not as big as the CX-90.

There is a Mazda CX-60 in Australia, Japan, and Europe. Its powertrain choices are similar to those of the CX-70 in the U.S., including a plug-in hybrid. The big difference between the CX-60 and the CX-70 is size. It is 14 inches shorter, making it closer in size to the U.S.-spec Mazda CX-50.

Of course, Mazda will not speak of “future product,” only to say, “We’re focused on our current product line-up.”

You do not have to buy the top-line CX-70 PHEV Premium Plus model, but the tester shows how Mazda is moving its design and interiors upscale.

BY MARK MAYNARD

The 2024 Lexus TX 500h is a big, roomy, family-class, three-row SUV crossover with sophisticated styling and innovative features. The 366-hp turbocharged, four-cylinder gasoline-electric powertrain exceeds performance expectations for its 5,000-pound curb weight with all-wheel drive. Standard rear-wheel steering is an urban dweller’s godsend, chopping a foot or more from the turning circle. At 38 feet curb to curb, the TX empowers drivers to go where large vehicles usually fear to tread.

Inside, the cabin has tall headroom of 40 inches amid luxury class materials and leather-trimmed upholstery. Lexus loaded the TX 500h F Sport model with a full complement of powered and pampering conveniences. The pair of second-row captain’s chairs have impressive legroom of 39.5 inches. Even the power-folding third-row seats are not a penalty pad with decent legroom (33.5 inches). And those in the waaay back have full-service treatment with air vents, reclining seatback, ports for phone charging, cup holders, and lighting.

I gladly went out to run errands in this nearly 17-foot-long F Sport people mover, which has a Trail Mode. Lexus doubled down on soundproofing and body reinforcements. The exterior styling is handsome with only the broad and louvered F Sport grille as the lone gimmick. Its bold statement will be marred with a license plate.

The weeklong evaluation was thoroughly enjoyable, until it wasn’t. My pleasurable job of testing this TX 500h F Sport hit a short circuit that nearly left me stranded.

Looking from the second row seats at the TX front seat area

The Lexus TX has front headroom of 40 inches with a panorama glass roof.

An Electrical Gremlin?

I had been out on a long note-taking drive on a Friday morning and then parked the TX at home. I did not drive the TX on Saturday but demonstrated its charms to a Lexus-owning neighbor couple. I showed them the power tailgate, the power-folding third-row, and the power push-pull electric door releases. On Sunday, I made a Home Depot run for garden soil, a distance no farther than six miles round-trip.

Upon my return home, I backed the TX into our driveway and unloaded the bags of soil. With the tailgate raised, I took the opportunity to measure the cargo space for liftover, width, depth, and height. When I went around to the rear side door to lower the seatback, the door would not open. Hmm, what am I doing wrong?

This TX model has door-release sensors on all side doors. I touched the lock sensor again, and again, but nothing. I pulled out the key fob and hit the unlock button. Nothing.

I then moved to the front doors, which were also locked.

Earlier in the week, I noticed that the driver’s door handle end cap to access the key port was loose. It was held in place by a thin strip of Velcro. Odd, I thought, and surely not factory. I wondered if a previous driver had a similar experience to mine, needing entry by the valet key.

It was then that the girlfriend-wife came out to the TX, and I explained the situation. She volunteered to climb through the open tailgate, across and around the second-row seats, to reach the driver door release lever. Success. The driver’s door opened, but no other doors would unlock.

The Amateur Diagnosis

And there was no response when I hit the start button.

Was the problem a dead or dying battery in the remote key fob? If the 12-volt battery were dead, why could I open and close the tailgate, several times?

I consider myself a semiprofessional auto journalist with 33 years of experience. But it was time to use my lifeline and call a friend. My neighbor Peter Badore is a retired Chrysler International Operations vice president and former military engineer. He is always up for an automotive problem. (Peter is also a Porsche collector who buys and repairs German cars. He also owns two hybrid cars and an electric Ford Mach-E.)

He answered my call, and we reviewed the processes I had just completed. He came over with his digital voltmeter and a hefty jumper box.

The underhood decal graphic showing battery placement

The under-hood battery decal.

We raised the TX hood in search of a positive battery post but found none. Peter happened to notice a 2-by-1-inch decal under the hood. It is a tiny graphic showing the locations of the hybrid battery (under the second-row seats) and an image of a 12-volt battery identified as Pb. Some of us might remember from high school chemistry that Pb is the metallic element of lead. (Peter did, I did not.)

The decal showed the 12-volt battery in the right quarter panel of the cargo area. There was no identifier on the side panel to indicate a battery, but we popped it off, and there it was. Peter used the voltmeter to check the battery health, which was indeed low, down to 9 volts. It should have been closer to 11 or 12 volts for cranking power.

Start-Up Stumbles

It was time now to charge the battery for an hour or two. But the battery is tucked so low into the side compartment that getting the positive charger clamp to stay on the post was a struggle. Peter persevered and wrestled the clamp into position.

A red jump cable connected to the positive battery post on the battery in the cargo side corner.

A tight location to jump-start the 12-volt battery.

With power flowing from the jumper box, I tried to start the TX. But instead of engine cranking, a dialog box appeared in the center gauge display. I was instructed to touch the remote fob on the stater button so the system could recognize the key. It made an immediate connection, and I could start the TX.

At last, it appeared we were exiting the electrical resistance — but would the charge hold? Or was there a parasitic drain? Indeed, the charge held for the next two days before the TX went back to its L.A. press fleet.

If this happened to an owner and family who had just spent a fun day at Disneyland, the TX would need to be towed to a dealership. Trust would be lost in the vehicle, if only temporarily.

Toyota can and should do better under the hood and in the cargo area to clarify and illustrate jump-starting procedures.

Lexus Responds

My contact in Lexus PR responded to my email query: “Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention and I’m so sorry to hear that! This was a prototype vehicle, rather than production and we have not experienced this issue on our other prototypes. I am keeping track of all prototype issues, and again, I appreciate you sharing this.”

Lexus got back to me in a week with this reply: “We have identified that it was a one-off battery issue and we have addressed this with our quality team.”

About the 2024 Lexus TX

There are seven SUVs in the Lexus lineup, but only two models — the midsize GX and large LX — have seats for six to seven. Neither, however, is ideal for a growing family. However, Lexus has filled its people-mover gap with the TX three-row SUV crossover.

Lexus benefits from several upcycled vehicles from its parent company, Toyota. Its latest addition, the 2024 Lexus TX, is based on the Toyota Grand Highlander, introduced last year.

The TX is now the brand’s most efficient vehicle for a growing family. It could become the choice for drivers who cringe at the M-word — minivan. The second and third rows are easily entered with tip-and-slide seats, and the cargo space is broad, square, and functional.

Three-row competitors include the Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Infiniti QX60, and Volvo XC90.

The 2024 Lexus TX is available in five trim levels with three powertrains of gasoline, gasoline-electric hybrid, or gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid. The hybrids use two battery chemistries: nickel-metal hydride for the TX 500h F Sport and lithium-ion for the TX 500h+ F Sport plug-in hybrid. Both hybrid models include F Sport Performance features, rear-wheel steering, and all-wheel drive.

Five paint colors have no additional cost on F Sport models, but Cloud Burst Gray is a $500 hue on the TX 350.

Tire and wheel sizes are 20 inches on non-F Sport models and 22 inches for F Sport.

Lexus TX Pricing

Today’s review is of the 2024 TX 500h F Sport Performance Luxury, which has an as-tested price of $77,235.

Here is the price walk of the three trims:

275-hp TX 350: 2.4-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder with eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive fuel economy ratings are 21/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined and 20/26/23 mpg AWD. Lexus recommends premium fuel for all TX powertrains. Toyota, however, recommends 87 octane or higher for its Grand Highlander Hybrids. The TX 350 is available in three trim levels with starting prices of $55,050 (front-wheel drive) to $62,550 AWD.

366-hp TX 500h F Sport Performance Premium AWD, $69,350: 2.4-liter turbocharged gas-electric hybrid with DIRECT4 AWD and six-speed automatic transmission. The parallel hybrid system integrates a front 64-kW motor and a rear 76-kW eAxle. Lexus says this system provides near-instantaneous power to the rear wheels. The TX 500h combines DIRECT4 and Dynamic Rear Steering. The 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery of 240 cells has a 5 amp-hour charge and 1.4 kW of total power.

TX 500h F Sport Performance Luxury AWD, $72,650. This trim uses the same gas-electric hybrid powertrain as the TX 500h F Sport Performance.

404-hp TX 550h+ Luxury AWD, $78,050:  3.5-liter V-6 plug-in hybrid and e-CVT transmission. The plug-in system provides fuel economy of 28/29/28 mpg city/highway/combined, with 33 miles of battery driving. TX550h+ Luxury has a fuel tank of 14.5 gallons, which is 3.3 gallons smaller than the standard TX 500h. The lithium-ion battery adds 408 pounds above the 500h for a curb weight of 5,357 pounds. However, the TX PHEV cannot recharge the battery while driving. Mazda provided this game-changing technology for its CX-90 PHEV, which costs around $60,000 fully loaded.

Lexus TX Enhancements

Transitioning from a Toyota model, Lexus engineers reinforced the TX body rigidity, including robot-applied automotive glue (adhesive) in optimal locations. Other stiffening enhancements include: Spot welding; rear multilink suspension design; widened front and rear tracks.

To help control weight gain, Lexus says the outer panel thickness has been “fine-tuned” on the side members, front door assembly, and rear door assembly. The hood and front fenders are aluminum, and the back door is steel, optimized for front-to-rear weight distribution.

TX Suspensions

Entry-level TX models have a MacPherson strut-type front suspension and a rear five-arm multilink. F Sport models have standard rear-wheel steering and an adaptive variable suspension. AVS uses solenoid-type actuators to modify the shock absorbers’ damping force on all four wheels. Near-instant damping adjustments are based on driving and road conditions. When driving on a rough road surface, the damping force keeps a lower rating for a comfortable ride. When entering a turn, the damping force sharpens responsiveness and control.

All TX models have four-wheel ventilated disc brakes. The front-drive TX 350 has front disc rotors of 13.3 inches. TX 500h hybrid models have 15.7-inch rotors, and all models have 13.3-inch rear rotors. And all TX trim levels can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

*More chassis components are in the specifications at the end of this story.

TX Safety Features and Technologies

There are eight air bags in the Lexus TX, including a driver knee bag and front passenger-seat-cushion air bag. Under the skin of the TX, there is NASA launch capability for the sensors and computer calculations.

Among the safety technologies is the Lexus safety system 3.0. It protects occupants and the TX with level II semi-autonomous driver assist. It is a reliable lane-centering system without drifting across the white lines or Botts dots, as do some systems. If you manage to activate the rear cross-traffic alert, know the braking response is set to “Slam stop.” It is rewarding, and frightening.

Elements of Safety System 3.0 include:

  • Lane-tracing assist;
  • Road sign assist;
  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection;
  • Dynamic radar cruise control with curve speed management;
  • Lane departure alert with steering assist;
  • Intelligent high beam headlights (dimming).

Worth noting is the infrared driver eyesight monitoring camera on top of the steering column. The camera detects driver distraction and will give a chime for too much rubbernecking. I got a message saying to “Sit Up” on the center gauge display. My remedy was to lower the power steering wheel a bit.

Among the F Sport features is a stylized grille.

Interior Function

With 60 inches of door-to-door room, there is plenty of space for ergonomic and intuitive control and switch placement. Sightlines are unobstructed across the fenders, at the side mirrors, and over the shoulder.

The F Sport seats, however, have “sporty” wedgie-inducting seat-bottom bolsters. And I felt some seat-bottom sag after an hour on the road. The second-row captain’s chairs are short on thigh support, likely to benefit legroom.

A 14-inch color touchscreen display centers the instrument panel for navigation, cameras, and CarPlay apps. Below are temperature dials and a volume button. The display works well even when making adjustments while driving.

Below the center stack is the charging e-bin with a wireless pad and three USB ports. The short electronic shifter provides solid and unconfusing gear engagement. The center armrest console has a split-style padded top, which allows the passenger to flip a lid to dig into the storage space. Cup holders are modular and removable and can accommodate a favorite mug.

Because the big infotainment screen takes up so much space, the air vents are placed below and at both ends of the dashboard. The placement could be better; they tend to blow air on elbows or hands.

Somewhat unique in the TX specifications chart are measurements for “Couple Distances.” I’d not seen that before for any make or model. The Lexus TX has second-row couple-space of 39.3 inches shoulder to shoulder.  But I’m not sure how that is relevant with the captain’s chairs.

Cargo Space

There is as much emphasis on utility as creature comforts in the TX. There is 20.2 cubic feet of grocery and gear space behind the third row. Bags of groceries won’t roll around, and there should be enough depth for a big golf bag.

Fold the third row for 57.4 cubic feet, stacked to the headliner. Power folding the third row, however, is painfully slow. I would rather have a manual release. But with both seat rows folded, there is 7 feet in length. Load-in entry is wide at 49 inches. And there are 33 inches of entry height to load tricycles, bikes, and boards.

Cargo space is generous and configurable. Fold both rows of seats for 7 feet in length.

Ride and Handling

The Lexus TX F Sport is not particularly sporty to drive, though it is quite capable of rapid cornering. Braking is absolute and balanced with tender engagement and no nose dive.

However, the adaptable suspension allowed a bouncy, jostling, but comfortable ride. The F Sport’s 22-inch tires and nearly 5,000-pound curb weight might be part of the sway.

Sharpening the suspension in Custom mode didn’t help, but it did make the ride feel harder. And in any suspension setting, the front end could take a hard jolt on the chin.

After bounding along some interstate undulations, the girlfriend-wife started to feel queasy. That tendency would be worse in the back rows.

Despite just slim roof rails (with optional cross bars), there was noticeable wind noise at highway speeds. Insulated side glass (despite a weight gain) might help reduce ambient interior noise.

The F Sport Luxury AWD tester was fitted with 22-inch Continental CrossContact LX 20 EcoPlus tires, 255/45. These are tough all-season tires with a fairly hard treadwear rating of 680 for a 70,000-mile limited warranty, per Continental. Continental says its EcoPlus Technology helps the tires stop shorter on wet roads and extends tread life. The tires’ flanged lower sidewall helps reduce the possibility of curb damage to wheels. Replacement tires will run around $350 each (before installation), per TireRack.com.

Why Buy the 2024 Lexus TX 500h?

I was unaware I was evaluating a prototype rather than a production vehicle until I communicated with Lexus. (The tester had the quality construction of a production vehicle.) Had I known, my story would have been more of an overview of the TX, with a Lexus follow-up on the battery drain.

Journalists are usually advised in advance when manufacturers hold media drives that include prototype or preproduction vehicles. If a problem arises, the response is: “If you like it, it’s production. If not, it’s preproduction (prototype).”

The electrical issue I experienced could be dismissed as a growing pain and easily resolved. But it was worth the discussion and awareness.

Electric glitches are the bane of the modern automobile. Considering the thousands of neural synapses all talking simultaneously, it is surprising that I haven’t encountered such gremlins in testing other vehicles. Could a 48-volt battery be necessary to monitor all these systems in the TX F Sport models?

There is much I like about the F Sport styling and content, but not the front seats or adaptive suspension. My preference would be a Lexus TX 500h without F Sport glam, but an absolute yes for rear-wheel steering. For now, however, Lexus won’t say if such a choice is in the future.
