2013 Stagecoach Country Music Festival Sets the Stage for 2014 Toyota 4Runner Reveal
  • First Toyota Global Automotive Reveal at a major music festival
  • Exclusive performance by Country star Dierks Bentley
  • ‘World of Wonders’ circus-themed fan experience, ride & drive and campground activities

Toyota will stage the world debut of the redesigned 2014 4Runner midsize SUV this Saturday, April 27 at 1:15 p.m. PDT at the 2013 Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, Calif., near Palm Springs. The event marks the automaker’s first-ever public reveal at a major music festival.

The Toyota 4Runner, now in its fifth generation, still uses rugged body-on-frame construction but with a compliant suspension setup.

It is sold in three models: a well-equipped SR5, top-of-the-line Limited, plus a Trail grade for amazing off-road capability. 2014 pricing has not been announced.

Returning for its seventh year as presenting sponsor of Stagecoach, California’s premier country music festival, Toyota will kick off the three-day event with vintage circus-themed fan experiences followed by the unveiling of the 2014 4Runner.

The reveal takes place on a unique Toyota stage and will be hosted by SiriusXM Channel 59 New Country radio personality, Buzz Brainard, with a special performance by recording artist, Dierks Bentley.

VW makes electrification seem natural

Volkswagen’s hybridization of its most popular model is a technological mile-marker for its intuitive activation.

If you didn’t now you were driving an electrified car, the Jetta Hybrid may seem just like its mainstream, gasoline-powered model mates.

Except for the large gauge display, the driver may just assume this is how a car should operate. The digital screen highlight transitions from electric mode to blended electric with engine power and on to full turbocharged force.

0420_JettaHybrid_DriverArea

Starting out in EV mode seems logical. Then the engagement of the 1.4-liter four-cylinder comes on without notice. Get on the gas for merging or passing and the request is delivered without hesitation or sensation of drivetrain engagement. The seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission rolls smoothly through gear changes.

And then there’s the main purchase motivation: fuel economy.

On my first drive, I headed for lunch about 30 miles away and gradually uphill. The majority of the route was on Interstate. I set the cruise at 67 mph and only twice did I have to accelerate hard to change lanes. The round-trip of 56.6 miles returned 45.8 average mpg. The EPA says to expect 42 mpg city and 48 highway or 45 mpg combined. With a little throttle modulation, I knew I could do better.

Blending the little 1.4-liter’s 150 hp with the electric motor yields a peak of 170-hp at 5,000 rpm. And the peak torque of 184 foot-pounds is grippingly low at 1,000 rpm. Put ’em together and the Jetta Hybrid will do 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds, VW says. There’s also a Sport mode that puts an edge on performance without the edginess that sometimes comes with sharpened power.

The Jetta Hybrid can be driven as an EV up to 37 mph for about a mile. That range, however, depends on battery charge, driving style and hilliness.

The 220-volt, lithium-ion battery is recharged in the usual hybrid ways: the engine, regenerative braking and coasting.

A mile on EV power may not seem like much, but it is more significant when creeping quietly in traffic or cruising for blocks in the city.

It is the transmission that gives improved highway mileage. Most hybrids (and EVs) use a continuously variable automatic to transfer power, which, typically, yields higher fuel economy in the city.

Sold in three trim levels, starting prices range from $27,785 to $31,975, including the $795 freight charge from Puebla, Mexico.

The hybrid models are well dressed with standard features including keyless access with push-button start, 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with all-season tires, power windows and (heated) mirrors , six-way manually adjustable front seats with power recline, media interface with iPod cable, Bluetooth phone-music connection with six-speaker CD-aux-audio, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel.

The SEL test car, $30,120, adds a navigation system, 16-inch wheels, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat.

The Jetta Hybrid gets some notable drivability enhancements, including the four-wheel independent suspension from the sport-tuned Jetta GLI. The Hybrid corners flat like a rear-drive sport sedan. It is sporty without trying. It lacks the sophisticated differential of the GLI model (which is basically the four-door version of the hot GTI hatchback) – but who would have thought a hybrid could be such a contender.

Sightlines are good over the hood and over the shoulder. Driver controls are easily accessed and viewed. Entry and exit is without restriction. The door grab handles are ideally placed for leverage. But a rearview camera is available only on the top-end model and there are no automatic headlights, which isn’t a deal-breaker for those who’ve never experienced them.

Headroom at 38.2 inches with the moonroof may be restrictive for some. Back seat legroom at 38.1 inches is regal, for a compact sedan. But the Hybrid’s reduced trunk space of 11.3 cubic feet may limit luggage space for family travel.

The Jetta Hybrid isn’t trying to be sporty, it just is. That’s an unusual trait for a mainstream hybrid that will be modern and enjoyable for at least the life of its hybrid warranty – eight years or 100,000 miles.

California DMV legacy plates

Order now for delivery …. In 2015
Available for vehicles of all years

The California DMV is now taking pre-orders for replicas of California license plate designs issued in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
The Legacy License Plate program, which became available at the start of 2013, is available for any model year car or truck, commercial vehicle, motorcycle or trailer. The plates are $50 a set, sequential or personalized, and $40 for the renewal.
But there’s a catch in getting the plates. Plate pre-orders are being accepted now … for delivery in 2015 or later.
A total of 7,500 pre-order applications have to be received before the manufacturing process can begin, said California spokeswoman Jessica Gonzalez. “Once we receive 7,500 pre-orders it could still take up to one year to get the plates in the hands of customers,” she said.

If the 7,500 pre-orders are not secured, the pre-order money will be returned to customers, she said.

As of April, the DMV had received 2,626 pre-paid applications for the 1960’s plate, 850 for the 1950’s and 590 for the 1970’s plate.

The actual plates will have as many characteristics of the originals as possible, Gonzalez said, but they will not be exact replicas due to changes in manufacturing processes and for the legal requirement that the plates be reflectorized.

The webpage for the Legacy License Plate program will update the pre-order tally on a monthly basis.

Order plates online at www.dmv.ca.gov/legacyplates/index.htm. The completed form and payment must be mailed to Sacramento (address is on the form). Payment can only be made by check, money order or cashier’s check. Pre-orders cannot be processed at DMV Field offices or Auto Club offices.
The Legacy plates are separate from plates for Horseless Carriages ($25), which the DMV defines as motor vehicles with an engine of 16 or more cylinders manufactured prior to 1965, or any motor vehicle manufactured in 1922 or before. There also are plates for Historical Vehicles ($25), which are for vehicles built after 1922, are at least 25 years old and of historical interest. These vehicles will be limited to use in historical exhibitions, parades and historic vehicle club activities. Details: http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg17a.pdf

Mazda wants to go where no carmaker has gone before and has partnered with Paramount Pictures for a TV spot highlighting the 2014 Mazda6.

The promo features Mazda’s Skyactiv technologies with imagery from the upcoming film, “Star Trek Into Darkness.” Skyactiv is an engineering foundation that includes vehicle design and structure, performance, and fuel economy.

The advertisement is just one piece of the media package between Mazda and Paramount. Other national marketing efforts will weave in broadcast, cable, digital, social media, such as Mazda’s Facebook page and dealer showrooms.
The television spot will air on broadcast and cable networks, and online properties.

Special signage will rotate on a digital board in New York’s Times Square as well as an oversized billboard along the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. The campaign began April 16 and will run through May 26.Mazda 2014 Star Trek poster

Mazda also is featured in Paramount’s “Star Trek” app. There will be five interactive missions, one launched weekly. Uses will go on scavenger hunts to find Star Trek and Mazda content in the real world (like dealer showrooms).

By completing each mission, fans will win prizes, exclusive materials, videos and content. And they will rise in rank through the Starfleet Academy.

The App is available on IOS, Android, and Amazon at www.StarTrekMovie.com/App

Dealership integration will include movie posters, ticket giveaways through the service department (during May), and showroom visits to complete an App mission.

The movie debuts this summer.
