BY MARK MAYNARD

Even before I hit the switch for Sport mode, I knew the Dodge Hornet R/T was not a typical gasoline-electric hybrid. Its power is unhesitating, the force is quick, and its cabin is rich in attitude. This new SUV “coupe” is all about performance, emerging from the wake of what was the Dodge brand’s Hemi V8 domain.

Hornet is a small, all-wheel-drive SUV crossover. It is an Italian import as a byproduct of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, also new for brand survival. A new “Fiat Fastback” SUV coupe is also sold in South America.

The Hornet’s well-muscled five-door body style is one of the Dodge brand’s new attempts at socially responsible performance. Both Hornet models are gasoline-electric hybrids, and the Hornet R/T is a plug-in hybrid. It has a battery driving range of 31 to 33 miles and has a sophisticated hybrid system that allows a blend of gas and electric power or electric alone. There is also an e-Save mode to bank battery power for use later, such as sneaking home late at night or in European city centers that ban gasoline-powered vehicles.

Never pious but ever-rebellious, the hot-rod Hornet is a looker with balanced proportions and a sleek profile. The front fascia is the most noticeable body styling difference from the Alfa Tonale. Sharp eyes will notice that this SUV coupe has no roof rails. And note the double red slash marks that replace a written Dodge nameplate.

The Dodge Hornet could be a sales contender if it weren’t so pricey — or if there were a third less-ferocious model more focused on fuel economy.

The Hornet Beehive

Dodge is catching up in the compact SUV segment. The Dodge Brand’s “Never Lift” business plan is about power first and fuel economy second. Dodge has not been particularly good at small vehicles, and its last “compact” SUV was the V6-powered Nitro, which was discontinued in 2011.

After Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the Peugeot Group merged in 2021, the mega-conglomerate of Italian-French-American manufacturing was renamed Stellantis NV. Today, Stellantis represents 14 automotive brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram, and Vauxhall.

Dodge is the beneficiary of the long arm of global reach to Euro car brands. When bestowed with the luxury donor from Alfa Romeo, Dodge went full pedal with performance as a brand separator. However, as a “muscle hybrid,” it has some cultural growth pains.

Building the Dodge Hornet from a European model puts it at a size disadvantage in North America. European vehicle categories are slightly smaller than the corn-fed vehicles preferred by American motorists. Inch for inch, the Dodge Hornet (and Tonale) is a “tweener” in size, almost a class-below compact in all size specifications. Yet Hornet is fully priced for the midsize segment.

Consequently, the Hornet has flown into an unforgiving U.S.-spec “compact” segment. Among the Hornet competitors are the Chevrolet Equinox (new for 2024), Honda CR-V, Mazda CX5, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and VW Tiguan.

2024 Dodge Hornet Pricing

For 2024, the Dodge Hornet will be sold in two all-wheel-drive models with turbocharged hybrid powertrains in two trim levels: GT and GT Plus or R/T and R/T Plus.

Hornet GT pricing starts at $32,495 and the GT Plus at $38,590;

Hornet R/T pricing starts at $42,995 and the R/T Plus at $48,340.

The Hornet R/T Plus tester came to $52,525. It had options for Acapulco Gold metallic paint $595; Tech package, $2,245; and Track package, $2,595. (Package details are in the specifications chart at the end of this story.)

Retail pricing includes the $1,595 freight charge from the Alfa Romeo Giambattista Vico Stellantis plant in Pomigliano d’Arco, Naples, Italy.

Find current Dodge Hornet pricing here.  And look for special incentives and offers here.  A $500 National Retail Consumer Cash incentive was available for the Hornet GT at publication. The 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T offers a $6,500 EV incentive when leasing through Stellantis Financial Services.

For comparison, the 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale is also sold in four trim levels with starting prices that range from $45,440 to $50,435. Check out the Tonale at Alfa Romeo USA.

Hornet’s Sophisticated Extras

Building a Dodge from an Alfa Romeo has its benefits. The Hornet has many sophisticated extras that are not always associated with a compact SUV, but these come at a price. Among the niceties I appreciated are:

  • Interior plastics and trim materials that are above basic;
  • Big Brembo brakes
  • Power heated and folding side mirrors;
  • ParkView split-screen backup camera;
  • 8-way power adjustable driver seat with 4-way lumbar and memory presets;
  • 8-way power adjustable passenger seat;
  • Techno leather (heated) steering wheel;
  • Illuminated glove box;
  • Pedestrian-cyclist emergency braking;
  • Full-width rear taillight bar with double red slashes;
  • Aluminum hood with functional air intake vents and dual strut supports;
  • Cargo floor support stops;
  • The engine has some practical engineering designs, such as placing the turbo wastegate high on the engine rather than the usual down-low position, where it is prone to grime and highway salt degradation. Check-and-fill points for fluids and the 12-volt battery are easily accessed and clearly marked.

Hornet’s Hybrid Powertrains

With its curb weight of 3,715 pounds, the entry Hornet GT weighs 425 pounds less than the plug-in Hornet R/T. The GT’s Hurricane 2.0-liter has peak torque of 295 foot-pounds at 3,000 rpm, on its way to a 5,500 rpm. Dodge cites 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds, making it among the quickest small SUVs on sale today. The nine-speed automatic transmission should keep acceleration on point, but I have not tested this model. But premium fuel is recommended for peak power. The gas tank of 13.5 gallons should provide around 364 miles of range, depending on how much and how frequently Sport mode is used.

The Hornet GT has a top speed of 140 mph vs.128 for the Hornet R/T. But the GT is 0.9 seconds slower to 60 mph than the R/T.

The 288-horsepower Hornet R/T plug-in hybrid is a slab of well-marbled beefcake. Going smaller goes big for the Hornet R/T PHEV. Its 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine has a combined 288 horsepower. The dual-motor powertrain pulls 199 foot-pounds of torque from the front motor and 184 from the rear motor. And it can travel up to 84 mph in battery mode.

Thank the Italian gods for the Hornet’s six-speed automatic transmission rather than a continuously variable (and continuously boring) transmission. The six-speed rolls easily through the gears to maximize force. But at 65 mph the engine revs slightly high at 2,000 rpm, and it is not a particularly quiet engine. The engine will rev higher on start-up and other times at idle, such as at a stoplight, to heat and keep the catalytic converter hot, Dodge says.

Poke the Hive

Hitting the Sport mode button on the center console pokes the hive. It sharpens throttle response and shift points, tightens steering feel, and taps into the hybrid system’s power and torque. The ensuring angry buzz was a little much for around town. I would use it selectively when anticipating the need for a quick getaway.

There is also a Power Shot to the Sport mode. Pull back both battery regen paddles for an extra 30 hp boost lasting 30 seconds. (After a 15-second cooldown, it can be used again.) I tried it a few times. It’s not a scary exercise and seems to be a bigger marketing boost than a real-world asset.

Another view of the 10.25 inch main infotainment screen

The hybrid system has modes of hybrid, battery, or e-Save to bank battery power for later use. (Mark Maynard)

Battery Power

The 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, with nickel manganese cobalt graphite, provides a battery driving range of 33 miles, plus or minus a few. I recharged three times and could only get to 31 miles. However, aggressive energy recuperation can stretch the range. Official EPA mileage estimates are 29 mpg combined city/hwy or 77 mpg-e combined. With the 11.2-gallon fuel tank, Dodge cites a total driving range of 360 miles.

More useful is the bi-mode hybrid system. It can run as a hybrid using battery and engine power. At low speeds, it functions as a battery-electric, and the engine engages on the harder tip-in of the accelerator. Using the steering wheel thumb button (or via the navigation screen), the driver can select hybrid, battery, or e-Save to bank battery power for later use.

Dodge says a full recharge using a level 2 charger will take about 2 1/2 hours. Plugging into a household 110-volt charger will take almost seven hours.

The Blacktop Package, $1,595, includes 20-inch Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires. (Mark Maynard)

Hornet R/T Ride and Handling

As quickly as the R/T can reach 60 mph, it can stop just as quickly. Big Brembo front and rear calipers have vented 13.53-inch front and 12.08-inch solid rear rotors.

Stopping power is amplified by the 9-inch-wide footprint of the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires (235/40). The Michelins, an upgrade in the Blacktop package, are quiet rolling despite a fairly stiff 540AAA treadwear rating.

The R/T ride quality is variable, with a continual settling of the suspension, as if, on long legs with a heavy body moving its hips to balance the load. The raised ride height and 20-inch Michelins might overwhelm comfort control.

Front MacPherson and rear Chapman struts are paired with Koni’s frequency selective damping shock absorbers. The shocks work to balance comfort and handling. However, suspension jolts can feel like steel knuckles.

The curb weight of the Hornet R/T is a stout 4,140 pounds, including the battery at 276 pounds.

Dodge media materials list a turning circle of 37.86 feet, but I expect that is for the base 17-inch tires.

Safety Features and Technologies

The Hornet’s Italian roots provide a vault of safety features, including:

  • 7 air bags,
  • Automatic electronic brake hold,
  • Blind spot and cross-path detection,
  • Full-speed forward-collision warning-plus,
  • Lane-keep assist,
  • ParkSense rear park-assist system,
  • Traffic sign information and recognition,
  • Automatic high-beam headlight control,
  • Pedestrian-cyclist emergency braking.

The 9-inch footprint of the 235/40 Michelins.

With that safety suite, Dodge layers on optional Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance in the optional Tech Pack, $2,245. Among its features are:

Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (IACC) maintains an appropriate speed and distance with stop and go functionality;

Intelligent Speed Assist with Traffic Sign Recognition detects the speed limit and also provides a one-click feature to adjust speeds;

Driver Attention Assist detects signs of fatigue and alerts weary drivers with a visual and acoustic warning on the gauge cluster;

Lateral Control and Lane Support system combines Lane Control and Traffic Jam Assist to keep the vehicle centered on the lane.

Interior Function

The Dodge Hornet cabin is front-seat biased and feels roomier than a compact. Headroom is tall at 38.8 inches with legroom of 41.7. Cornering sightlines, however, are complicated by the stretched-out windshield pillars and the large side mirrors.

With the comfortably bolstered sport seats in the Track package ($2,595), the driver is set for the slalom course. The black Alcantara seat upholstery with red accents is attractive and the seats are supportive. Large drivers, however, might feel a little cramped at the shoulders.

Some elements in creating a buzz for a hot-rod Hornet seem gratuitous, even gimmicky. For example, the Klingon-class regen paddles look cool but are in the way of the turn signal and wiper stalks. These metal paddles, like curved battle blades, are mounted to the steering column, not the steering wheel. I prefer the column placement because the driver always knows where the upshift and downshift modes are. But are these big blades necessary for regeneration?

Because of Hornet’s Italian roots, however, there is an awkward translation to commonly applied procedures, such as setting cruise control. Drivers should get this figured out before setting out.

Helpful Hornet Details

Other than the complicated sightlines, the interior layout is functional and contemporary. The driver faces a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that has three configurable zones.

The center 10.25-inch screen for the Uconnect 5 infotainment system is also configurable. Various modules, such as music and maps, can be displayed. The split backup camera screen includes an overhead view, handy in tight parking situations.

The electric parking brake, large wireless charging pad, sliding front armrest, and sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors are also appreciated.

I like the smart-locking doors with a “chiclet” in the door handle. It takes just a hand swipe at the grip, and the door(s) unlock. On exit, just press the chiclet. However, for $52K, I’d like to have smart locking for all side doors. It is a convenience not to have to swipe the front door first before gaining access to the back doors.

Looking into the back seat with the attractive alcantara black and red upholstery

More of the good Track pack upholstery in a subcompact back seat. (Mark Maynard)

Back Seat and Cargo Space

If the front seat area is compact, the back seat is subcompact but with more of the Track pack’s black-and-red upholstery. The fast roofline crops headroom, and legroom is snug, even with knees against the front seatbacks for taller passengers. The space might be small for young families with growing children.

The 60/40 folding back seat has a ski pass-through and fold-down armrest with two can holders. But when lowered, the broad armrest cuts uncomfortably into elbow room.

No budget was wasted on overhead grab handles, so just lay your dry cleaning across the seat. But the back seat does have two USBs ports (Types A and C), center air vents, and bottle slots in the doors.

Cargo space is more like trunk space, with 22.9 to 50.5 cubic feet measured to the headliner. Packaging of the battery downsized the R/T cargo space by 4.2 cubic feet.

There are no roof rails, so there is no other option for cargo, yet the roof height of 63 inches would be reachable by most.

Oddly, the cargo floor is almost square and does not contour around the rear fender wells for niche space. But there is usable basement space to store the charging cable and the little flat-tire inflation compressor.

Folding the 60/40 back seat gives about 5 ½ feet in length. Entry height, however, is low at 26 inches, and cargo entry width of 39 inches makes it too small to load that big-screen TV.

Conveniences include two side lights, two bag hooks, and four tiedowns.

Why Buy the 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T?

Dodge Hornet seems to be in a strong pregrid position to introduce new buyers to the brand. It went on sale in 2023 and is currently lapping its 2024 model year. Early Hornet models were the subject of much concern, with owners experiencing a variety of electronic glitches. Software updates attended to most of those more or less promptly.

New buyers of Hornet can get good information from the Dodge Hornet Forum and the Dodge Hornet R/T & GT Facebook page

BY MARK MAYNARD

FEBRUARY 13, 2024, AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Chrysler today unveiled the Chrysler Halcyon Concept, exemplifying a fully electrified future of the Chrysler brand. The concept embraces sustainability-driven exterior and interior design, full autonomy paired with personalized driving experiences and futuristic technology.

Chrysler plans to launch its first battery-electric vehicle in 2025 and is on course to feature an all-electric portfolio in 2028. The Chrysler Halcyon Concept reinforces the brand’s commitment to the plan of Stellantis Dare Forward 2030, which cultivates electrified and more efficient propulsion systems. The goal is for Stellantis to cut its global carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2030 and to lead the transportation industry by achieving net carbon zero by 2038.

A forward view through the front seat area and expansive windshield.

The interior of the Chrysler Halcyon Concept has an almost 360-degree range of view. Chrysler says the design delivers a “digital detox” cockpit through stress-free autonomous features.

Chrysler Halcyon: A Forward-Looking Vision for an All-Electric Future

The Chrysler Halcyon Concept imagines a future that utilizes innovative Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer, DWPT. This technology will wirelessly recharge electric vehicles traveling over specially equipped, dedicated road lanes. The power transfer system is intended to allow unlimited range and travel from destinations, such as New York to Seattle, without needing a charger, charge cord, or public charging stations. Stellantis partnered in 2022 to demonstrate the potential of DWPT technology at the Arena del Futuro circuit in Chiari, Italy.

The concept also envisions incorporating breakthrough Lyten 800-volt lithium-sulfur EV batteries that do not use nickel, cobalt or manganese. By not using these mixed metal oxides, Chrysler anticipates an estimated 60 percent lower carbon footprint than today’s best-in-class batteries and a pathway to achieve the lowest emissions EV battery on the global market. In May 2023, Stellantis Ventures, Stellantis’s corporate venture fund, announced an investment in Lyten to accelerate the commercialization of Lyten 3D Graphene applications for the mobility industry.

Interior Design and Features

A cross-car pillar-to-pillar transparent display centers the sculpted cockpit. The screen provides a forward-looking view of information while keeping eyes on the road. A stowable 15.6-inch console screen can be rotated for portrait or landscape orientation and can assist in start-up and quick access to information. Voice recognition commands can fully control the displays.

AI functionality allows the driver to ask the vehicle anything. STLA Brain technology delivers over-the-air updates for software and features. The Stellantis AI system enables the concept to diagnose issues and communicate OTA solutions without visiting a dealership.

The reverse-yoke-designed steering wheel folds away, with pedals also retracting when the steering wheel retracts.

Detroit’s musical culture and heritage inspire Chrysler’s new wing logo. The logos on the steering wheel and other cabin areas are made from crushed and 100 percent recycled composite material made from post-consumer music CDs.

A glass center console links the cabin spaces from the front to the rear. Lighting is a focal point for the console and continues along the doors, footrest, and footwells.

Lightweight, keystone-shaped front seats can fully retract into the rear seat position, creating a giant accessible area.

Rear seats retract into the trunk area to highlight a potential next-generation vision of Stow’ n Go seating, invented for Chrysler minivans. The rear seats stow away either through biometric identification or voice.

Innovative Materials

The dark gray floor is a malleable, textile-infused wood with a microfiber backing, offering multiple potential applications. The wood is traceable throughout its entire production.

Brushed black copper door and door sill film accents provide an alternative to paint, lowering the concept’s use of volatile organic compounds emitted during the painting process. The thin film transitions in shades from black to brown.

The trunk area also features a textile-infused wood floor and a runnerboard on the floor that can be removed for more storage space. There also is a pass-through from the rear seats.

Halcyon Concept Bullet Points

  • Based on Chrysler’s STLA Large BEV platform, the Halcyon Concept integrates STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit, and STLA AutoDrive technologies;
  • The concept’s dramatic proportions create a low-to-the-ground profile with a front air blade aerodynamic pass-through for improved BEV range;
  • Butterfly-hinged canopy and red-carpet-style side doors create an open-air feel and give easy access in and out of the vehicle;
  • In Prepare Mode, Stellantis AI assistant preps the cabin to set HVAC levels; predictive navigation provides real-time traffic routing;
A rear view of the Halcyon

The rear of the Chrysler Halcyon concept also carries its own unique silhouette, with a water line that emphasizes the width and shoulders of the car, and the front’s cross-car read and LED-lit Chrysler Wing logo are mirrored in the rear.

  • A Welcome Mode uses biometric identification to greet the driver with LED exterior lighting animation, personalized exterior sounds, and a greeting on interior screens;
  • Personalized vehicle “cymatics” –— sounds and vibrations mirrored through visuals — give calming or energetic sounds based on driver presets;
  • Different sound frequencies prompt corresponding particle shapes on the wide console screen. So-called “calming frequencies” create dispersed particle patterns, while dynamic sounds have energetic shapes;
  • Chrysler’s STLA AutoDrive technology platform enables Level 4 autonomous driving;
  • A dimmable glass canopy and windshield can turn opaque with seats laid back for a unique augmented-reality Stargazing Mode;
  • Drivers can use voice recognition to deploy the steering wheel and control the vehicle through customized EV drive modes.

What is Mopar?

Mopar is the global name for Stellantis genuine parts and authentic accessories.

A simple combination of the words MOtor and PARts, Mopar offers service, parts, and customer care. Born in 1937 as the name of a line of antifreeze products, Mopar has evolved over more than 85 years to represent complete vehicle care and authentic performance for owners and enthusiasts worldwide.

Mopar made its mark in the 1960s during the muscle-car era with performance parts to enhance speed and handling for both on-road and racing use. Later, Mopar expanded to include technical service and customer support, and today, it integrates service, parts, and customer care operations for customer and dealer support worldwide.

Complete information on Mopar is available at Mopar.com and the Mopar blog at Blog.mopar.com.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary celebrates a rugged nameplate. With just 150 models built, getting one will require resources

BY MARK MAYNARD

I smile like a 10-year-old holding his favorite Tonka truck whenever I hoist aboard a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392. The view through the Gorilla Glass windshield, the rumble of the Hemi V-8, and its lock-and-load power are ridiculously gratifying.

In celebration of the Rubicon nameplate, the four-door 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary is even more outrageous. It has the look of a four-star general in full dress uniform. Give a salute to its gold-tone tow hooks, the Xtreme 35-inch tire package with bronze bead-lock capable wheels, and the barrage of black-and-gold Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary graphics.

This Jeep is thoroughly badass — in appearance and performance. If a carmaker is going to build such a beyond-expectations vehicle, the 470-horsepower Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary is how to do it.

For most Jeep enthusiasts, however, the Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary is “unobtanium.” Production was limited to just 150 units, and you’ll have to know a dealer to get one — and pay a substantial “market value” premium. Or spend an astronomical auction amount.

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary has a starting price of $92,690, including the $1,795 freight charge from Toledo, Ohio. My tester was $95,385 with options for Sting-Gray clearcoat paint ($495) and a Sky one-touch power top ($2,200).

20th Anniversary Regalia

Jeep opened the Mopar parts catalog to upfit this 20th-anniversary showcase. Among its special features are:

  • 20th Anniversary graphics: hood decals, swing gate plaque, and shifter medallion;
  • Half-inch suspension lift, which gives another 0.5-inch of water fording depth, now at 32 inches; and another 0.4-inch of ground clearance, now at 11.2 inches;
  • Triple hoop grille guard. (It feels more solid and robust than any aftermarket grille guard you can buy.);
  • Steel bumpers (winch-ready at the front);
  • 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires on 7.5-inch-wide beadlock-capable wheels;
  • 83-piece tool kit with canvas bag;
  • Front off-road trail camera;
  • Heavy-duty steel rock sliders;
  • Gorilla glass windshield;
  • Red-and-black Nappa leather seats;
  • Red leather-wrapped instrument panel bolster;
  • Auxiliary switches, such as for electrically disconnecting sway bars or locking the differentials;
  • All-weather slush mats.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe 20th Anniversary

There is a more conscionable choice in the also-extreme 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe 20th Anniversary.

With a price of $71,380, the Rubicon 4xe has about the same hardware upgrades as the 392 model but with 33-inch tires and hood decals and graphics in electric blue.

The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe is a 375-hp plug-in hybrid with a battery-driving range of 21 miles and combined fuel mileage of 49 MPGe. The dual-motor powertrain and lithium-ion battery work with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The combined torque rating of 470 foot-pounds at 3,000 rpm churns up a lot of launch power to heft its curb weight of 5,222 pounds, which is 124 pounds heavier than the Rubicon 392. Consequently, Rubicon 4xe acceleration to 60 mph takes about 6.3 seconds, according to online estimates, vs. 4.5 seconds for the 392 Hemi.

However, the Rubicon 4xe has relevant assets of an eight-speed automatic transmission (not a CVT) and a tow rating of 3,500 pounds. But most important, the driver can save the battery charge to use on the trail for silent running, except for the pleasant crunch of trail dirt or the graunch of metal on rocks.

Jeep’s ‘Lunatic Fringe’

Rubicon is the off-roading pinnacle of the Jeep Wrangler line. The nameplate was initiated “as an internal underground project, led by a small group of passionate Jeep engineers” known as the “Lunatic Fringe.” Their test bed included the Rubicon Trail in the California High Sierra. The team of trail jockeys wanted a more off-road-focused Wrangler, one they would buy.

Their work yielded the 2003 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. It was introduced in the spring of 2002 to the brand’s legion of faithful followers at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah.

The first Wrangler Rubicon started production in summer 2002 and went on to beat all sales expectations, Jeep says. Each successive evolution of the Wrangler Rubicon gets more capability. Hundreds of tested Mopar options and accessories are among the upgrades, all backed by a full warranty. And those extras can be factored into the financing when buying a new Wrangler Rubicon.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Pricing

There are a dozen trim levels of the Jeep Wrangler, eight with two doors and a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission on some trim levels. All have some level of four-wheel drive.

Engine choices are a standard 285 horsepower, 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, an optional 270-hp direct-injected and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, or the mighty 470-hp, 6.4-liter Hemi only for the Wrangler Rubicon 392. (The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 is ending production for 2023 in North America. See the “Farout” below.)

Starting prices range from about $33,000 for the entry two-door Sport with six-speed manual transmission (add $4,000 for four doors) to $57,000 for the four-door Wrangler High Altitude.

Today’s tester is the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary.

Without the anniversary regalia, a 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 starts at $84,290. And there are dozens of Mopar accessories and upgrades to ratchet the price.

American Expedition Vehicles Package

As tough as these Rubicon anniversary models are, Jeep worked with aftermarket firm American Expedition Vehicles for an adventure-tested hardware upfit.

A special shock absorber by American Expedition Vehicles

The 15-piece upgrade package by American Expedition Vehicles includes the 2.5-inch DualSport RT Suspension System with Bilstein 5100 shocks. (Stellantis/Jeep).

Exclusive to the Rubicon 20th Anniversary editions, the Level II upfit by American Expedition Vehicles is an off-roader’s dream list of content. Among the 15 total upfit features are:

  • 37-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires;
  • Warn VR EVO 10-S winch;
  • AEV 17-inch Savegre II wheels;
  • AEV 2.5-inch DualSport RT Suspension System with Bilstein 5100 shocks;
  • AEV 7000 Series off-road lights;
  • Benefits of the complete AEV upfit package include:
  • 14.2 inches of ground clearance;
  • 37.1 inches water fording;
  • 50-degree approach angle;
  • 33-degree breakover angle;
  • 43-degree departure angle.

The AEV Level II packages are pricey at $22,978 for the 20th Anniversary Wrangler Rubicon 4xe and $21,130 for the 20th Anniversary Wrangler Rubicon 392. Pricing includes a $995 installation fee.

Rubicon 392 Hemi Powertrain

The Hemi V-8 is a cornerstone engine in the annals of muscle-car fame. For the Rubicon Wrangler 392, the 6.4-liter engine has 470 hp at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 470 lb.-ft. at 4,300 rpm. The engine redlines at 6,400 rpm.

The 392-cubic-inch V-8 breathes through sequential multipoint injection and pushrod-operated overhead valves. The engine has 16 valves with sodium-filled exhaust valves and hollow-stem intake valves. All 16 hydraulic lifters have roller tips.

A heavy-duty 8HP75 eight-speed overdrive connects with the full-time Selec-Trac 4WD. This sophisticated system has 4WD Auto, 4WD High, Neutral, and 4WD Low. True-Lok axles front and rear provide tractor-like grunt.

Jeep says the two-and-half-ton (5,098 pounds) Rubicon 392 can power to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and stampede through the quarter mile in 13.0 seconds.

This rewarding hunk of  Hemi delivers official fuel economy ratings of 13 mpg city, 17 highway, and 14 mpg combined, using the required premium fuel for max power. I saw 14.4 mpg in highway driving, but so what.

If you think the Rubicon 392 has bad mileage, ask your V-8 4WD pickup-driving friends for their honest guestimates for fuel economy for their truck. It might be better by 2 or 3 mpgs, but hundreds of thousands more gas-guzzling pickups are sold than this radical Rubicon.

Keep watch for filling stations on the way to the trail. The 21.5-gallon tank gives a range of 301 miles, on a good day.

Check your vehicle’s mileage here.

Last Call for Wrangler Diesel

The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, once available for the Wrangler, will end production this year (2023) in North America. However, the diesel-engine option will be available a while longer for the Gladiator pickup.

Jeep will send off the Motori diesel with the special edition Jeep Wrangler Rubicon FarOut. Based on the Wrangler Rubicon four-door, the FarOut edition features a “Diesel 3.0L” hood graphic, “3.0 D” badging, and a unique wheel style. Pricing starts at about $70,000.

The reinforced tailgate (to secure the 35- or 37-inch spare tires) integrates a Mopar air compressor. To the right is a commemorative build plate.

Rubicon 392 Hardware

The Rubicon 392 can ford water up to 32.5 inches deep — even if a bow wake washes over the hood. Instead of an external snorkel, a functional hood scoop connects to a tri-level Hydro-Guide air intake. The system feeds the V-8 with cooler outside air, and a one-way drain in the air box can separate up to 15 gallons of water a minute.

Active dual-mode exhaust engages automatically to open valves in the exhaust system. Under higher engine loads, the open exhaust reduces back pressure. The driver can also hit a switch to open the pipes manually.

Chassis changes include:
•Heavy-duty brakes.
•2-inch factory lift.
•Upgraded frame rails.
•Specially calibrated suspension geometry with FOX high-performance shocks.

Low-speed descents use engine braking, a revised torque converter lockup control, and a 48:1 crawl ratio. The system allows the driver to manage vehicle speed without using the brake pedal.

Four-wheel-disc braking has 12.9-inch vented front rotors with two twin-piston floating calipers. The rear brakes have 14-inch vented rotors with two single-piston floating calipers.

Rubicon 392 Ride and Handling

With the steely upgrades for the Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary, it is not such a shaggy beast to drive.

Acceleration, of course, is breathtaking, as in “Yikes, watch the fuel gauge drop.” Throttle tip-in is responsive, and the Hemi shrugs off any sluggishness that might come with hefting two-and-a-half tons.

The exhaust tone is deliciously ’60s Plymouth Road Runner and music to the enthusiast’s soul. There is an electronic switch to open the pipes to neighbor-angering boldness. But the open pipes also resonate boldly through the cabin, so I didn’t feel the need.

Besides, there’s enough wind and blunt-shape noise at highway speeds. However, the nine-speaker Alpine audio system, with an all-weather subwoofer and 552-watt amplifier, has plenty of clarity for easy listening at 65 mph.

Jeep claims a turning circle of 38.9 feet, it just seems tighter as the Rubicon 392 pivots around tight corners. And it must have a helluva strong power steering pump to turn 35-inch tires so easily, with no cavitation in lock-to-lock turns.

While there is plenty of sidewall to protect those 17-inch wheels, the black “beadlock” band will show rock scrapes allowing the aluminum to shine through.

The Sky roof is the easiest to enjoy of any of the four-door Wranglers’ sunroof choices. It might be expensive, but you will enjoy it more often.

Interior Function

The Wrangler cabin is a vertical environment, beginning with the short, flat windshield and stacked controls. Sightlines are open across the hood and over the shoulder.

Inside the Rubicon 392, the interior includes leather-trimmed upholstery with bronze Rubicon 392 stitching. The leather-wrapped, performance steering wheel has paddle shifters, a first for the Jeep Wrangler.

Because of the tall tires and broad fenders, foot space up front might be cramped for size 14 shoes. I wished for an actual driver’s footrest, but there just isn’t room for it.

The Uconnect system projects on a standard 8.4-inch screen, which is small for at-a-glass views. The system includes Jeep Off-road Pages that allow owners to monitor such elements as pitch, roll, altitude, GPS coordinates, and drivetrain power distribution.

Safety Features and Technologies

For a vehicle with such raw potential for off-roading survival, it is somewhat surprising that there are so many comfort and safety features.

All Jeep Wranglers have front and seat-mounted side air bags, all-speed traction control, electronic stability control, hill-descent control, and hill-start assist.

A pair of safety groups add the advanced technologies:

Jeep Active Safety Group: ParkSense rear park assist, blind-spot
monitoring, rear cross path detection, and LED taillamps;

Jeep Advanced Safety Group includes: adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.

Why Buy the Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary?

One and done. Can it get any better, or more outrageous, than this 2023 Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary?

You’ll not likely find a new Rubicon 392 20th Anniversary on a dealership lot, but these Jeeps will be cherished and used with care. In 10 years, the Rubicon 392 20th will still be rewarding to own, but still at an “unobtanium” price.

Without the anniversary fanfare, you can get all the grunt and glory from a stock 2021, 2022, or 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392. These are still pricey at $80,000 to $100,000, but that is the cost of distinction.

Something old, something new, something borrowed, and some things that will totally blow you away

BY MARK MAYNARD

The big San Diego International Auto Show is back after a 2-year pandemic-induced hiatus. The show is ongoing in the San Diego Convention Center through Jan. 2, 2023.

As all regional auto shows in the U.S. regain their footing following the pandemic (and manufacturers’ shift from plowing ad dollars into these shows), this show will look much the same upon entry, but the show floor is smaller. The immense space was cropped at the western end, where the Exotics Vault and other specialty vehicles were displayed. Those show favorites are reorganized in other areas.

There are still many classics and outrageous vehicles to be seen. In my Friday morning visit, I saw no concept vehicles, but several new vehicles were not yet on sale. Among them are the Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid and the Dodge Hornet, which will be the first dedicated plug-in hybrid from Stellantis.

The major automakers on display are Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Ram, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
