BY MARK MAYNARD

The re-engineered, redesigned, and just-about-new-everything 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a formidable overachiever — luxury in a gloved fist. The new GX outdistances the previous Lexus GX in most categories, but without the V-8 engine so loved by owners.

The 2024 GX 550 is a larger SUV now with twin-turbo-V6 power and a tow rating of 9,000 pounds, or 2,500 pounds more than its predecessor. All models have full-time four-wheel drive, a limited-slip center locking differential, and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Now that Lexus dealers have the three-row, family-class TX model, Lexus could expand and enhance the GX 550 line. New for 2024 are two new Overtrail models fit for “overlanding” amid Lexus luxury.

Luxury off-roading SUVs are an oxymoron, but Lexus must see some sales-poaching opportunities. About the only GX Overtrail competition is the Land Rover Defender, an icon of mountain-goat ability with kid-glove resolve. However, the 2024 GX Overtrails have the pricing advantage, costing $70,000 to $80,000 well-equipped.

Whether for street or trail, the 2024 Lexus GX is tough looking, but the interior is calming, lux, and modern, Lexus says. There are six trim levels of pricing, four of which emphasize luxury, with seating for five, six, or seven. The Overtrail exclusively has five seats for its cargo-camping capacity.

Lexus says the GX marketing plan for the Overtrail models was to provide refined outdoor experiences. To support those experiences, Lexus created the Overtrail Project. Details are below.

It is not simple to design a husky SUV that offers luxury and off-roading dominance without compromises. As thoroughly conceived as this new GX is, there are a few missed opportunities.

A Pre-Production Note

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+ test vehicle was a pre-production model. Lexus says it is representative of a final production model. Or, as manufacturers will say, “If you like it, it’s production. If you don’t like it, it’s pre-production.”

The tester had accumulated 6,300 miles, which indicates it had extensive journalist evaluations. All the elements of the test vehicle looked to be at the production level. The interior assembly had precise fit and appealing finishes. All exterior body panels were well-aligned and secure.

In The Beginning

The first-generation GX entered the North American market in 2002. It would become a successful off-road racer in demanding events like the Baja 500.

The 2024 Lexus GX 550 is a completely new vehicle built on Toyota’s GA-F platform. It underpins body-on-frame Lexus and Toyota vehicles, including the Lexus LX 600, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Tacoma and Tundra pickups.

Comparing 2024 with 2023 GX

I tested the top-line 2024 GX 550 Overtrail+. It is not built on a namby-pamby unibody frame but a lightweight ladder frame. The truck-style frame increases body rigidity, crucial to withstand twisting off-road forces. The suspension capably manages the Overtrail+ curb weight of 5,675-5,705 pounds (depending on options) and its tow rating of 9,063 pounds.

With toughness comes size. Compared to the previous Lexus GX, the 2024 model has a wheelbase 2.4 inches longer, now at 112.2 inches. The GX body is 3.8 inches wider, now at 78 inches or 78.4 with the Overtrail’s fender overriders. Body length is almost 5 inches longer, at 197.05 inches. The GX stands taller by 1.39 inches, or almost 2 inches taller for Overtrail models. The wheel track is wider, too, by almost 3 1/4 inches, benefiting a secure driving stance.

Inside, there is more head and legroom throughout. Front shoulder room grew by 4 inches.

While the Lexus GX and Toyota Land Cruiser are platform partners, there are decisive separators. The Toyota is available only with a 326-hp, 2.4-liter i-Force Max hybrid four-cylinder engine. The powertrain has 465 foot-pounds of torque at a low 1,700 rpm, full-time four-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Land Cruiser went on sale Aug. 1, 2024. Available in three trim levels, starting prices range from $56,000 to $75,000 for the First Edition model.

2024 Lexus GX 550 Pricing

GX shoppers can choose from six trim levels: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and the new Overtrail and Overtrail+. Starting retail prices range from $64,250 to $77,250 for today’s review of the top-line GX 550 Overtrail+.

Suggested manufacturer starting prices include the $1,350 freight charge from the Tahara plant in Japan. The GX is built there with the Land Cruiser Prado and Toyota 4Runner.

With a few options, the test GX 550 Overtrail+ was an $81,000 commitment to exploring the outdoors. Standard features above the GX 550 Overtrail ($69,250) include:

  • Intuitive parking assist with auto braking and rear pedestrian detection;
  • Power rear door with kick sensor;
  • Front massaging seats.

All standard and optional features are highlighted in the specs chart at the end of this review.

Safety Features and Technologies

Among the standard GX 550 safety features, with 10 air bags, is the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0. Its advanced technologies include:

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection — PCS. Using a camera and millimeter-wave radar, the pre-collision system can help detect and alert to a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist. If the driver does not react, the system can use automatic emergency braking between 7 and 110 mph.

Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist. Emergency maneuvers get an additional steering boost to prevent lane departure between 25-50 mph.

Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking. If turning left in front of an oncoming vehicle, the system will issue a warning alert followed by automatic braking. This feature is functional only during daylight hours.

Emergency Driving Stop System — EDSS. If the system detects no driver input for some time, audible warnings will alert the driver. If the driver does not respond, the system will slow the vehicle to a stop, keeping it safely in the lane. EDSS only operates when driving on expressways with DRCC and LTA activated.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist — LDA w/SA. Functional above 32 mph, LDA w/SA will issue audible and visual alerts if an inadvertent lane departure is detected. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system will initiate gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance.

Proactive Driving Assist — PDA. Using the vehicle’s camera and radar, PDA monitors distance control between a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. The system will engage gentle braking and steering into curves as needed.

GX Overtrail Interior Function

The GX front seats are in command position, comfortable for hours. In the Overtrail+, the driver gets the added benefit of an eight-way power seat with an extendable cushion. However, the front passenger seat has only six-way power, and the cushion is not long enough for leggy occupants. For $80,000, the front passenger should be treated better.

The upright windshield and side mirrors offset from the body provide wide-open views. Access to all controls is finger-reach simple, with a functional presentation of digital and manual controls.

The GX has an expansive hood, but its size is minimized by the two slightly raised channels over the fenders and tires. The lower flat plain between the fender channels benefits improved visibility. When off-roading, the raised channels help the driver see where the tires are and where to place them.

The wide center infotainment screen is not prone to glare and is equally visible to both front passengers.

Headroom with the Overtrail’s standard moonroof is 39.4 inches. Delete the moonroof, and head space gains a couple of inches to 41.7 inches. The moonroof is irrelevant for Overlanders who travel with a loaded roof rack, allowing the $1,100-delete to be applied elsewhere.

Cargo entry is broad at 45 inches by 42 inches deep to the back seat.

Cargo entry is broad at 45 inches by 43 inches deep to the back seat.

Back Seats and Cargo Space

Step-in access to the back seat is a little tight and narrow. If the doors opened wider, it would facilitate child-seat access and gear loading. Legroom is good at a max 36.7 inches if tall people are not sitting up front.

The manual lever for the fold-and-tumble back seats could use some refinement for ease of use.

GX cargo space is big and square, 45 inches wide at the tailgate opening. Boxy gear is easily loaded and secured with 36 inches from floor to headliner.

Fold the 60/40 back seat for 5 feet in length. However, the expanded cargo space is not a contiguous flat space, such as for sleeping. There is about a 3-inch dip in the floor under the back seats. Some type of filler pad will be needed to fill the void for comfortable sleeping.

A tonneau cover is $110? For an $80,000 specialized luxury off-roading SUV, a tonneau cover should be standard equipment. The roller cover keeps eyes off the cargo contents, whether at the mall or on the trail.

Powertrain and Performance

For 2024 in the U.S., the standard powertrain in the GX is a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed direct-shift automatic Transmission.

Lexus says the 349-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 outperforms the previous generation V-8, with 301-hp Torque output—towing grunt—also rising to a substantial 479 lb.-ft. from 2,000-3,600 rpm. Compare that to the previous GX 460, with 329 lb.-ft. at 3,500 rpm.

Performance around town can be strong in Normal and Sport modes. Eco mode is too hand-wringing cautious for me.

Fuel economy ratings are essentially the same as before: 15 mpg city, 21 highway, and 17 mpg combined, a 1 mpg highway boost. As before, maximum power requires premium fuel.

When the GX tester was delivered to my San Diego home, the average mileage rating was 15.1 mpg. That was after the 100-mile drive from Orange County, near Long Beach. The mileage did not get much better. During my test week, I took two 80-mile roundtrips and a shorter highway drive of around 75 miles. With that much highway driving, using Eco or Normal modes, the average mpg rose just to 15.5 mpg.

With my average mpg, the 21.4-gallon fuel tank in GX 550 would provide a driving range of around 330 miles. The Land Rover Defender has a 23.8-gallon tank — and every dollar and gallon matters when heading to the backcountry.

Lexus says a GX hybrid powertrain will be available in the U.S. at a later date but gives no details. Could it be the engine in the 2024 Land Cruiser?

GX towing capacity is much improved for 2024, now up to 8,000 pounds for Premium and Premium+ models. Overtrail models have tow ratings up to 9,096 pounds, with a standard tow hitch. The previous GX had a tow rating of 6,500 pounds.

Looking at the twin-turbocharged V-6 engine in the new GX.

The only GX powertrain for 2024 is a 349-hp twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine.

Ride and Handling

It is big and blunt, but the GX 550 delivers a remarkably comfortable and soundproofed ride. The cabin is so well soundproofed that highway tire noise is minimal from the 33-inch Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires. A full-size spare cranks down from under the cargo area.

One of the overachieving skills of the GX 550 Overtrail models is the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. E-KDSS is an elaborate hydraulic system that adjusts front and rear stabilizers for consistent control. The setup of two two-way hydraulic cylinders keeps fluid moving front to rear. Sensors in the electronic circuit respond to the side-to-side and ups and downs of trail driving, and lumpy city streets. The stabilizer bars unlock for long wheel travel when off-roading. When one cylinder reacts by compressing, the other cylinder releases. Greater wheel travel increases traction by keeping the tire in contact with the trail, ruts, or sand runs. When driving on-road, the hydraulic cylinders keep the stabilizer bars fixed, allowing the bars to twist as normal to tame body roll.

Once a system used on Toyota off-road vehicles, E-KDSS is now an exclusive Lexus technology.

Lexus also says the GX adopts electronic power steering, adding increased steering feel on and off-road. The steering weight is light and responsive to small inputs. When off-road, its steering finesse is an asset when navigating a rutted or narrow track when inches matter.

However, a wide turning circle of 42 feet is a liability on a trail or at the mall. Sure, there is enough locking-differential traction to make a five-point turn on a trail, but at what cost to dragging along the greenery? Four-wheel steering would chop the turning circle by a few feet and make everybody happy at Tread Lightly.

GX as Off-Road Chaperone

With all of the electronic driver-assistance technologies, novice Overtrail riders have a nurturing guide. However, an experienced trail-driving friend would be helpful to point out what not to do.

A Torsen limited-slip locking center differential is standard on all GX models to harness the traction capabilities. The locking diff is necessary for traction in low grip situations, splitting engine power 50:50 front for a steady pull.

The Overtrail and Overtrail+ add an electronic locking rear differential engaged by a console-mounted switch. Locking the differential splits the power evenly between the left and right rear wheels to help the wheels turn at the same speed.

Other Overtrail assets include:

Crawl Control. This electronic low-range traction system operates in five driver-selected speeds, forward or reverse.

Downhill Assist Control. The semi-automated system works with the braking system to control slippage and prevent the brakes from locking. This assistance helps drivers focus on steering and scanning ahead for hazards without applying the brakes or downshift.

Hill-Start Assist Control. HAC prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped on an incline, whether off-road or on the street. Sensors detect when the vehicle is on a hill and automatically apply the brakes for about two seconds.

Multi-Terrain Assist. The electonic transfer case’s traction control system can switch between high range (H4) and low range (L4). L4 has four modes: Auto, Sand, Mud, and Rock. H4 has five modes: Auto, Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Deep Snow.

Multi-Terrain Monitor. Four cameras transpose images underfloor, front, side, and rearview, displayed on the panoramic view monitor. The underview is especially useful when off-roading.

Standard triple-beam LED headlamps.

Standard triple-beam LED headlamps have positioned higher to help avoid potential road impacts.

Observations and Considerations

Four-wheel steering. With a 42-foot turning circle, the GX 550 Overtrail+ has the grunt and traction to make five-point turnarounds on a woods trail. But at what cost to trampling the greenery? An option for four-wheel steering would be worth the price. And it would provide a better in-town parking experience.

More stash space! Off-roaders bring a lot of stuff into the vehicle’s cab. There are maps, guidebooks, gloves, a tire gauge, binoculars, and plenty of snacks. However, small-item storage is lacking in the GX 550. The door panel slots are narrow, and the center transmission console is huge and broad but has barely any space except for cup holders. There is an unnecessarily elaborate, covered slot for the 12-volt plug, which takes up valuable space. The optional Cool Box ($170) in the armrest console is smallish, with space for four small beverage bottles and a few energy bars. Cooled by AC, the insulated box is inadequate as a cooler or storage space.

Running boards fail. The GX has standard step-aboard rails that complicate ease of entry and exit. The running boards are positioned rearward and are not particularly helpful when loading the roof rail. The boards also restrict getting close to secure children into second-row child seats. When off-roading, running boards compromise trail clearance. Installing an aftermarket electric step rail would be better. These fold up after climbing aboard and automatically deploy when exiting the vehicle.

For those who use the roof rails, a handy aftermarket doorstep hooks into the door latch point. There are many choices online, and most have a weight rating of 400 pounds. Pricing ranges from $10 to $50 a step.

Lexus Overtrail Project

Lexus has introduced the Overtrail Project to explore nature through refined adventures. The project’s goals include new products, accessories, gear, and experiences. Learn more here.

Accessories for Turn Key Overtrail Experience

With dozens of outfitting choices, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail owner can hit the “Add” button to be (mostly) expedition-ready.

The Lexus off-roading accessories are of quality brands, but owners can shop for lower prices at aftermarket sites. However, a winch is not among the accessories. Loading up on the GX Overtrail accessories includes a Lexus warranty, which can be financed with the vehicle.

Find Lexus accessories at Associated Accessory Parts Program.

Rock Rails: $990. If you will be bashing down the Rubicon Trail, these rock rails will help protect the lower rocker panels. However, I have also seen rock rails torn off long-wheelbase vehicles on the way down.

Roof Rack $1,580. And the rack is useless without the optional cross bars, $560

ARB Premium Recovery Kit $526. Essential tools include:

  • Tree trunk protector;
  • Snatch strap, snatch block and bow shackles;
  • ARB snatch strap;
  • ARB snatch block to increase the tow winch capacity and facilitate winching from varying angles;

ARB Twin Portable Compressor $1,012. Serious off-roading requires an air compressor, portable or hard-wired to the vehicle (my preference). ARB does not cite what size tires this portable unit can handle. I expect it is intended for the 33s on the GX 550 Overtrail+.

ARB Air Compressor Pump Up Kit $114. Add this kit for its 20-foot air hose to air up after a trail run. The kit includes quick couplings and a T-junction for connecting an air check and pressure switch.

ARB TRED Pro $370, in red or gun-metal gray. Don’t leave home without these treads for lost traction in sand, mud, or snow. And ARB TRED Pro Mounting Kit $102.

A rear end view of the new GX

The new GX outdistances the previous Lexus GX in most categories but without the V-8 engine.

Why Buy the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+?

Who knew there were Lexus GX owners serious about off-grid travel? And why would GX owners subject the hand-rubbed paint of their pricey SUV to trail pinstriping? Will Lexus field a team for the Rebelle Rally? Will Lexus participate in the Overland Expos?

Only time will answer those questions. According to Automotive News, Lexus believes it can sell roughly 33,000 GX models in the U.S. in 2024. That tally puts the 2024 GX only slightly ahead of the 31,910 sold last year.

For now, the GX 500 Overtrail+ is a beefy, body-on-frame truck. In some respects, it has more in common with a Toyota than the luxury of a Lexus. However, there are valuable separators in Lexus warranty coverages, destinations by Lexus properties, and the kinder, gentler treatment at the dealership.

For those who still prefer the vault-like qualities of the previous Toyota Land Cruiser, they are still available in the Lexus LX 600.

BY MARK MAYNARD

It must be lonely on death row for the Volvo V60 Cross Country. This adaptable midsize wagon has nothing terribly wrong, but the company is leaving it behind. Volvo is charging full speed into a full-electric lineup by 2030.

According to a recent report in Automotive News, “Volvo will not sell a single car that is not full-electric after 2030, regardless of market,” said the brand’s chief commercial officer, Björn Annwall. “There’s no ifs, no buts.”

Vehicles in Volvo’s fossil-fueled lineup will limp along, but “we’re not investing in their base technology; there is no deep R&D,” Anwall said. “But we can upgrade infotainment, software [and] some exterior, interior design.”

Annwall’s tone is absolute when many automakers have backed off on a full transition to full-electric lineups. There are just too many variables in building a pure EV business plan. Too many regions of North America (and Europe) do not have an established infrastructure for public charging, and there won’t be in the immediate future. Developing reliable public charging stations has been a struggle in the U.S.

The front seat area showing the steering wheel, shift console and the goofy 9 inch vertical tablet for infotainment

V60 Ultimate features include a Harman Kardon audio system, tailored (stitched) leather dashboard, crystal Orrefors shift knob, and 10-way power-adjustable, heated and ventilated front seats.

The Winter of EV Discontent

Many EV-intending motorists hit the pause button after the winter’s deep freeze. Blame the well-televised reports of EV owners left in the cold at traffic-jammed charging stations. Couple that unpleasantness with the electric vehicle’s reduced range in cold weather and the typically dismal upkeep of charging stations. Public chargers are often poorly maintained, grimy, and faulty. At least gasoline stations have an attendant who might occasionally wipe down the pumps and hoses.

Public charging will get better. But countless apartment and condo dwellers have no access to “home” charging. The high MSRP of electrics is yet another steep step to mainstream EV adoption.

To paraphrase Mr. McGuire’s one word of encouragement to Dustin Hoffman (Benjamin) in the classic 1967 film “The Graduate:” Hybrids. And Volvo has several plug-in and mild hybrids, including the V60 Cross Country. However, the larger mild-hybrid Volvo V90 Cross Country is also on its way out, likely next year.

The Swedish automaker has told dealers that it expects to launch seven new and redesigned electrified models, including five battery-electric vehicles. On the doorstep are the large EX90 and subcompact EX30. And among the battery-electrics could be a crossover-like electric replacement of the V60 Cross Country in late 2027.

The 48-volt, “mild hybrid” V60 Cross Country would be an ideal “electrified” choice in cold regions without public charging. A 48V hybrid system is complex but almost required for powering the many electronics in a new vehicle. A mild hybrid goes beyond reduced fuel consumption and emissions, it gives notably better performance than a full hybrid system. But it also is more expensive.

The 9-inch vertical touch screen combines car functions, but the rearview image is too small.

V Is for Versatile

Volvo’s lineup of Cross Country wagons began with the 1998 V70 XC, or Cross Country. The 2024 V60 Cross Country and larger V90 Cross Country models are their descendants, each based on a Volvo station wagon.

The Volvo V60 wagon (V for versatile, 60 for the midsize body style) was first released in 2010 and given a facelift in 2014. The V60 Cross Country, with a body lift of 2.4 inches, came out in 2015, and the redesigned second-generation model came out in 2018 for the 2019 model year. The second-gen V60 was a full redesign based on the then-new Volvo Scalable Product Architecture, or SPA.

From 2021, the V60 is only available as the Cross Country. Then, in 2022, Volvo refreshed the styling of the V60 Cross Country and platform partner S60 sedan. But it was just a new front grille design and updated rear bumper inserts. New colors, wheels, and interior options, such as leather-free materials, were made available across the range in almost every model.

An upgrade to the infotainment system starting in 2023 included the capability for over-the-air updates. New Volvo vehicles can receive and install software upgrades remotely. As software updates roll out, Volvo says each car will continue to improve over its lifetime.

Interior plastics are durable but not completely premium in appearance or feel.

2024 V60 Cross Country Pricing

There are two versions of the V60 wagon: the Cross Country and the high-performance, 455-hp Polestar-engineered V60 Recharge plug-in hybrid. At $72,645, the latter is $10,000 more expensive than today’s tester, a top-line V60 Cross Country Ultimate.

In 2022, Volvo reduced the V60 Cross Country trim-level choices to Plus and Ultimate and trimmed the optional extras to streamline the production process.

All 2024 V60 Cross Country models have standard all-wheel drive and a panoramic roof. Free factory-scheduled maintenance is included. Coverage is for the first three services at 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 miles, up to 36,000 miles. The following retail pricing includes the $1,195 freight charge from Torslanda, Sweden.

V60 Cross Country Plus pricing starts at $51,695. Standard features include a power tailgate, leather upholstery, 12-inch digital gauge display, 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist, blind-spot monitor, cross-traffic alert, and 18-inch wheels.

The Orrefors crystal gear selector knob is by the Swedish glass design company.

Ultimate pricing starts at $56,795. Its features build on the Plus, with such extras as a Harman Kardon audio system, tailored (stitched) leather dashboard, crystal Orrefors shift knob https://www.orrefors.us/ , air purifier, power-folding rear headrests, and 10-way power-adjustable front seats that are heated and ventilated.

And how refreshing that the nine metallic or pearl paint colors are all a no-cost choice.

A three-year lease was available for the V60 CC Ultimate at the time of publication. With a $4,035 down payment, the monthly payment would be $685. But annual mileage is limited to just 10,000 miles and .25 cents a mile afterward.

Suburbs to Skogen

The V60 Cross Country personifies the Swedish family crossover utility vehicle. Volvo’s V60 catchphrase is from the suburb to the skogen (Swedish for forest).
The V60 is a comfortable and functional wagon born for the mean city streets to snowy roads to the mountains for outdoor fun. Its off-road ability is not at the SUV level for the rutted track.

This attractively styled wagon does many things right in its midsize footprint. Its electronic features were state-of-the-art six years ago, and its interior function is good but not great. The cabin is due for a major remodel (which it will not get) to carve out more interior space and improve storage areas.

My Ultimate tester totaled $62,780 with five options:

  • Climate Package $750, which adds headlight washers, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats;
    Trailer hitch $1,650;
  • Luggage roller cover $385;
  • 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system with 1,410-watt output $3,200;
  • Power tailgate with kick sensor $200.

No buyer in this price segment would NOT want the cargo roller cover as a safety feature from thieving eyes. And $200 for a tailgate with a kick sensor is gratuitous upsell when it should be included for $57,000.

All Ultimate features are in the specifications chart at the end of this story.

Luxury Wagon Alternatives

There are a couple of luxury alternatives to the Volvo V60 Cross Country:

Audi A6 allroad, $70,000-$75,000;

Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain Wagon, $80,000-$85,000.

Volvo Safety

Volvo has long been a vehicle safety advocate. It was Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin  who invented the modern three-point safety belt in 1959. Volvo then gave the patent to the world for free, and now the three-point belt is found in every vehicle, including tractors.

The V60 Cross Country continues that advocacy by thoroughly integrating advanced safety technologies. Standard V60 safety features include seven airbags, blind-spot information with steering assist, cross-traffic alert with auto brake, lane-keeping aid, forward collision warning, and post-impact braking.
Volvo’s standard City Safety with Autobrake is a collision-avoidance system with camera eyes to recognize pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals.

A vintage volvo photo showing a female connecting a 3 point seatbelt which was designed by Volvo in 1959

The three-point seatbelt was designed by Volvo in 1959. (Volvo photo archives)

Driver assistance technologies include Pilot Assist with adaptive cruise control for Level 2 semiautonomous driving; collision avoidance system of low- and high-speed collision mitigation; vehicle-pedestrian-animal detection; oncoming lane mitigation braking; and run-off road mitigation.

The Pilot Assist system does a respectable job of highway centering without drifting across the white lines in cornering. When engaged, the system can steer, accelerate, and brake on well-marked roads up to 80 mph. “Well-marked” is key because these systems tend to flake out on roads with crumbling surfaces and poorly marked lanes.

I experienced the absolute slam-stop of cross-traffic alert with autobrake when just backing into my driveway. The system thought it saw something. It was nothing, but such quick driver support can be appreciated. In tight parking situations, bumping a car or a wall is so easy.

Cross Country Interior Function

Volvo’s interior design is artful and mostly functional. The front-seat area feels roomy with headroom of 38 inches, with the panoramic roof. Sightlines are unobstructed at the side mirrors or over the shoulder.

The raised ride height allows comfortable entry and exit. The front seats, with 10-way power adjustment, conform to tall drivers with a seat-cushion extender.

The starter switch on the shift console is odd, but owners will adapt. And another uniqueness is the crystal Oreffors shift knob, made by the Swedish glass design company.

The driver faces a 12-inch-wide digital gauge display with two display modes. The Nav choice displays the map, and the “calm” mode shows black space between the left speedometer and the right tachometer.

Of questionable function and safety is the 9.0-inch vertically oriented touch screen. The tablet-like touchscreen combines car functions, navigation, connected services, and entertainment apps such as Spotify and Pandora.

Volvo likes this vertical screen arrangement, claiming the portrait view gives easy and fast access to features. But like a tablet device, it works well when sitting at home. On the road, it takes eyes from the road to hunt and peck. There is a dial for volume control at the base of the screen, but changing temperature and fan speed requires a tap or two on the screen.

Worse, the camera view is narrow and low on the screen, and the image is convex and rounded at the corners.

There is also no wireless charging pad or dedicated place to lay or prop a phone except in the cup holder. The shift console has a slim, covered storage tray, but it is best for spare change.

The back seat in the V60 cross country

Back seat legroom is short at 35.2 inches, and the transmission tunnel is awkwardly tall and wide.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

If the V60 were to be redesigned, a couple of inches of cargo space could be sacrificed to add legroom to the back seat. Back seat space is compact for adults, with just 35.2 inches of legroom, and shoe tips are stuffed under the seat ahead. The very wide and tall transmission-exhaust tunnel obliterates center seat foot space.

Cargo space is plentiful behind the 60/40 folding back seat, with 25.5 to 60.5 cubic feet stacked to the headliner. Unlike most SUVs, the load height is a manageable 26.7 inches from the ground to the cargo floor. The entry opening is wide at 43.7 inches, with almost 41 inches wide between the wheel housings. There are a couple of bag hooks and a corner nook with a net.

A full-size temporary spare with all the jacking tools fits neatly below the cargo floor. This is a much better spare tire location than the typical SUV, which carries the spare under the vehicle.

The raised hood showing the engine

The 247-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder 48-volt mild hybrid engine. (Note how upright the hood raises.)

The Mild Hybrid Powertrain

No Sport mode, no steering wheel paddle shifters, no problem.

Volvo’s V60 Cross Country powertrain consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and eight-speed Geartronic transmission. It is a sophisticated powertrain that integrates a 48-volt motor and battery. The so-called “mild hybrid” system is a half-step toward full gasoline-electric hybridization. It is an elaborate and expensive setup but with worthwhile assets. The system provides auto start-stop at idle and gives some instant acceleration boost from a stop. There is no turbo lag on takeoff, and the acceleration fills strongly into the mid-RPM range.

According to Volvo specs, the 48V system helps clock a 0-60 mph launch in 6.6 seconds. That is a reasonably responsible pull for the 4,100-pound all-wheel-drive V60 Cross Country.

The 48-volt mild hybrid powertrain has fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 mpg combined. But achieving those numbers requires premium fuel. I observed 24 to 27 mpg in my week of driving. With that range, the 15.9-gallon tank should provide well over 400 miles.

The eight-speed Geartronic rolls easily through gear changes. The transmission has a manual shift mode but no paddle shifters or Sport mode.

The cargo space behind the 60/40 folding back seat is wide and low. Below it are the full-size temporary spare and jacking tools.

Cross Country Ride and Handling

Volvo does suspensions differently for its Cross Country ride and handling. The so-called Cross Chassis suspension refers to a single rear transverse leaf spring. Whatever it does, the ride quality is well-supported and gives flat handling in fast cornering. That is important when hefting two-plus tons on a lifted chassis.

The four-wheel independent suspension has front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link. The setup smoothes broken road surfaces and limits road harshness from permeating the cabin.

A drag coefficient of 0.24.8 cd is remarkably low and slipperier than a Toyota Prius. However, there is noticeable wind noise at highway speeds.

Complimenting ride control are the Volvo-specific 19-inch Pirelli P Zero all-season tires, 235/45.

Large four-wheel disc brakes engage without grab or dive. The front rotors are 13.6 inches and 12.6 inches rear. Volvo cites a braking distance from 62 mph in 115 feet. That stopping distance is 19 feet shorter on average for midsized and luxury SUVs, per Consumer Reports.

The steering is comfortable and well-weighted, but it is not overly communicative to the driver. Volvo claims a curb-to-curb turning circle of 37.1 feet, which is nimble for a midsize sedan. The Ultimate’s 19-inch wheel package might push the distance a bit, but it was still handy in my experience.

Why Buy the Volvo V60 Cross Country?

The 2024 Volvo V60 Cross Country exemplifies “new-old stock.” You might not care if there is no wireless charging. It is the V60’s knife-edge styling and comfortable cabin that might have more meaning.
A three-year lease deal will make for an enjoyable skogen run, until there is an electric V60.

New owners can find online support through Volvo Forums.

Whether a bucket list item, a fantasy road trip, or a curated Extraordinary Journey of Discovery, I had to share this release from Bentley Motors for its third annual exclusive driving experience.

The program spans five days and four nights, on two 2024 dates:

• Aug. 19-23
• Sept. 2-6

Fortunately, there is enough time to plan for the adventure if you need to move some investments around. The cost per person (double occupancy) is £14,950 or $18,993.98 in U.S. dollars and includes using a Bentley.

The exclusive road trip is limited to just five couples per group.

“Sustainable, seasonal, and locally sourced produce will be served to guests throughout the programme of culinary experiences. Nature, history, arts and culture, wellbeing, and relaxation will all form a part of the trip.”

And, of course, the Bentley Event team will provide full concierge service, looking after guests’ every need along the way.

The route begins at the home of Bentley Motors in Crewe, Cheshire (the Pyms Lane site), and finishes at The Macallan Estate in Scotland’s protected Speyside region.

All departure arrangements, flights, and insurance are not included. However, the package includes all accommodations, food, drinks, and activities throughout the five-day programs.

Tickets may be purchased here.

The official release is below, lightly edited for length.

Guests will drive in convoy in Bentley’s latest models – the Continental GT, the Flying Spur and the Bentayga – toward the Peak District National Park. Passing idyllic chocolate-box villages and world-famous market towns, guests will then venture north into the “Dark Peak” region. The final destination for the day is set within the Yorkshire Dales where Georgian country house hotel Grantley Hall will play home for the evening, offering lovingly home-grown and locally-sourced seasonal produce for dinner.

The grand opening of the American Honda Collection Hall was yet another dream realized for the first Japanese automaker to begin sales in the United States.

The expansive collection hall opened Sept. 12, 2023, at U.S. company headquarters in Torrance, Calif. Dozens of media, Honda racers, and fans gathered for the red-logo day of fanfare. There were tributes to associates and longtime and retired American Honda personnel. The Torrance mayor and pro tem mayor spoke of American Honda’s significant contributions to the community in the last 60 years.

Headlining the grand opening was Noriya Kaihara, president and CEO-director of American Honda Motor Co. He spoke of mobility for the future, sustainability in auto production, and the power of dreams, the company’s marketing tagline and corporate philosophy.

Kaihara joined Honda in 1984, spending much of his early career in the service division of Honda Motor Co. He assumed his current role at American Honda on Oct. 1, 2021.

More than six decades of American Honda Motor Co. are on view

The collection hall represents more than six decades since American Honda Motor Co. was established in 1959 at a modest storefront in Los Angeles.

Honda’s Power of Dreams

“Our new American Honda Collection Hall reflects the important connection between the dreams and passion of Honda associates and the joy experienced by customers who love their Honda products and racing fans thrilled by our checkered flag successes,” said Kaihara. “Everyone at Honda is honored to share the expressions of our history in America that are on display in the form of products and technology that have helped move people and society forward.”

American Honda Motor Co. opened in a small storefront in Los Angeles on June 11, 1959. The Japanese brand started in the U.S. selling motorbikes — the Honda Dream, Honda C92 Benly, and Honda Super Cub, known as the Honda 50, in the U.S.

It was the foothold of an upstart to disrupt American motorcycle sales, including by Harley-Davidson and European makes.

The small office at 4077 West Pico Boulevard was moved to the nearby suburb of Gardena at 100 West Alondra in 1963. In 1990, headquarters was relocated to its existing address at 1919 Torrance Boulevard in Torrance. The Honda headquarters occupies 101 acres.

Embracing the Community

Located in the main lobby of American Honda headquarters, the museum is a way to bring the (car) community to Honda, said CEO Kaihara. The American Honda Collection Hall will be open to the public during regular “Cars, Bikes & Coffee” events starting Oct. 21, 2023.

While there was a previous museum at HQ, it was not open to the public. The new collection hall is a complete redesign, an open and airy walk-through learning experience of milestones. The 20,000-square-foot hall displays more than 60 vehicles from Honda and Acura, motorcycles, power products, engines, and racing machines.

The display will be updated several times a year to highlight different products and themes. Just added in 2024 is a new display of 12 electrified vehicles, concepts, and race cars, including the new Honda Prologue EV, Acura ZDX EV, 2nd-generation NSX, and a custom 1991 Civic EV Pikes Peak racer.

The collection hall is a 20,000-square-foot showcase of Honda milestone vehicles and events.

Honda’s collection hall is a 20,000-square-foot showcase of milestone vehicles and events.

Cars, Bikes & Coffee Events

The collection hall will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to noon on third Saturdays for “Cars, Bikes & Coffee” events. All interesting automobiles and motorcycles from all manufacturers and eras are welcome for attendees to display.

The events typically include giveaways, special displays, vendors, food trucks, and music. And, of course, participants can shop the merchandise display of Honda wearables and more.

Car clubs can plan to attend any upcoming events: April 13, 2024; June 15, 2024; Aug. 17, 2024; Oct. 19, 2024; and Dec. 21, 2024.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Specifications

BY MARK MAYNARD

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is not just a benchmark electric car; it is a well-done passenger car without gimmicks or compromise to comfort or drivability.

For those considering an electric vehicle, the Ioniq 6 treats you right, from its gracious ride quality to its ease of entry and exit and many appreciated details. Its potential as an emergency power source is not the least among its assets.

The midsize “coupe sedan” has been a breakout star for Hyundai. The Ioniq 6 debuted last year and is a “carryover” model with no changes for 2024.

Exterior styling of the Ioniq 6 has stirred controversy. The rear end is very busy with two spoilers, vertical metallic accent bars, and “parametric pixel” cubes liberally applied in the lighting.

Front views are sleek and refined, with a smooth slope to the hood, centered between the curvaceous fenders. The dramatic slope is key to aerodynamics, but at a compromise to space in the front trunk. The frunk’s 0.5 cu.ft. shows good use of space, but the space is long and shallow but lighted. How an owner would use this leftover space? For gloves? A microfiber towel? Christmas gift hiding place?

Trimming the height of the frunk was likely to allow the steep slant of the nose, contributing to low aerodynamic drag. Intended or not, the slope of the hood also allows open sightlines. The slant design treatment has been compared to the 1980s Porsche 911 Turbo S “slantnose.” The Porsche “Flachbau,” or flat front design, had a low front aerodynamic flow for its race cars.

Who Will Buy the Ioniq 6?

Hyundai’s marketing research has decided that the focus buyer for the Ioniq 6 will be:

  • Millennial professionals who are confident in their choices and looking to transition to electric;
  • Accomplished singles or couples who are typically urban. They are comfortable standing apart and differing from the status quo. They seek to make an informed choice for their next vehicle;
  • They are looking to reward themselves with an EV that makes a statement of confidence and doesn’t compromise on a premium interior, advanced technology (safety and connectivity), or limit (through charging and range) their active lifestyle.

Choices of Power and Driving Ranges

The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is sold in four trim levels in rear or all-wheel drive with standard and long-range battery options:

Standard range RWD with a 53-kWh battery pack of 264 cells; 149-hp (111kW); up to 240-mile range; 0-62 mph 9 seconds.

Long range RWD with a 77.4 kWh battery pack of 384 cells; 225 hp (168kW); up to 361-mile range; 0-62 mph 7.4 seconds.

Dual-Motor HTRAC AWD long range, with 77.4 kWh battery; 320 hp (239 kW), up to 316-mile range; 0-62 mph 5.1 seconds.

The single-speed transmission has four driving modes of Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow, and Custom, with a dedicated eAWD torque split for each drive mode.

Charging the Ioniq 6

According to Hyundai, the Ioniq 6 battery pack will charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in 18 minutes at an ultra-fast 800V charging facility. Connecting to the more common 350-kW Level 3 fast charger can add as much as 65 miles of range in 5 minutes.

Hyundai includes a 10.9-kW onboard charger as standard equipment so owners can plug it into a household outlet or a 240V Level 2 home charger. Charging a depleted battery at home on a Level 2 charger would take around seven hours. I plugged in at home with 150 miles remaining on the charge, and it took about 4 hours to reach 100 percent.

Here are the official charging times, up to 80 percent:

Level II standard 120-volt: 6 hours 55 minutes

50kW: 73 minutes;

Rapid Charging, 350kW: 18 minutes.

Hyundai’s Multi-Charging System

Hyundai has patented its multi-charging system, calling it world-first technology. The system enables the motor and inverter to boost 400V to 800V for stable charging compatibility.

The technology includes “reverse compatibility,” also known as bidirectional. This added level of engineering — Vehicle to Load (V2L) — allows the Ioniq 6 battery to be used as an alternate power source. V2L is handy in the event of a significant power outage. It has enough power to operate small appliances, recharge electronic devices, or boost another EV.

Recharging an EV on vacation travel is still a time-management effort, no matter if the EV has a range of 600 miles. The recharge still requires a break for a meal or shopping.

Hyundai has partnered with Electrify America to provide free fast-charge sessions. The plan is provided to any new all-electric Hyundai model. For the Kona small SUV, owners will receive up to 250kWh or about 1,000 miles of driving. Buyers of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 get two years of 30-minute DC fast-charging sessions.

Touchy Feely Design

Hyundai went far left coast in planning the Ioniq 6 interior. In the big wall map of features to be considered, Hyundai designers came up with many categories including “Mindful Cocoon,” “Ethical Design,” and “Emotional Efficiency.”

The cabin is referred to as “Living Space” and is defined by a cab-forward exterior design, a stretched cabin, and a low hood for a streamlined silhouette. The cabin as “Living Space” would have “Transparent Accents,” “Light Reflection,” “Parametric Pixel,” and “Eco Materials,” for “Sustainability.”

That’s a touchy-feely marketing focus that doesn’t mean a whole lot to an owner, but Hyundai neatly ties it all together. Perhaps most apparent is the “Parametric Pixel.” In, out, and around the Ioniq 6 are series of cube pixel-like accents, such as in the taillights, the trunk-lid spoiler, and on the steering wheel. There is no badge for Hyundai or Ioniq on the wheel, just a row of four, square pixels that light up when charging; they show the state of charge, whether one, two, or four squares.

The Human Experience

Popular magazine reviews of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 go deep into its powertrain kilowattage, 0-60 acceleration, and charging times. The Ioniq 6 aces those categories, which an owner will quickly accept and appreciate. However, there is a bigger presence of thoughtfulness toward the human experience. That aspect will be a pleasant discovery period for the many surprise-and-delight features throughout the living space.

Achieving max aerodynamic flow can mean lowering the car’s ride height. That’s good for the manufacturer’s fuel-efficiency standards but damning to the driver and occupants who must drop into a seat while peering into the taillights of the vehicle ahead. Ride height is one reason SUVs have become so popular. Hyundai, however, managed to give the Ioniq 6 a comfortable step-in height with a commanding forward view. Most modern sedans are now notorious for chin-scraping on driveways and dips in the road, but the Ioniq 6 has none of those tendencies.

Those attributes alone make the Ioniq 6 a “buy.”

An artsy view from the back seat forward showing the wide sunroof

Enter the Living Space

Modern low-riding sedans lost buyers because of trimmed headroom. Hyundai went upward with Ioniq 6 headroom, providing (tall for a car) 40.2 inches of hair space without the wide sunroof or 38.3 inches with it.

Seat design is another strong selling point, whether in the front or back. Hyundai’s H-Tex leatherette upholstery feels rich to the touch and is more compliant than leather hides. The front seatbacks gently cradle with modest cushion bolstering that does not give a goodbye wedgie when exiting. Thigh support is full-bodied and suitable for those tall enough to need all 45.4 inches of the car’s very long legroom.

The tester’s interior was basic black but refined by meticulously neat stitching, patterns, textures, and translucent plastics in the lower areas of the cabin. I liked the robust driver’s footrest, and the metal-trimmed pedals fit well with the interior design and black microsuede headliner.

And the greenhouse of the living space is a lighthouse of unobstructed views at the side mirrors, over the shoulder, and the somewhat cropped back glass.

A winglet-design dashboard is unique with 90-degree angles at each end by the windows. The dashboard looks like a plug-and-play unit, but it all works — though it will look odd for the first few drives.

Driver information comes from two side-by-side, 12.3-inch digital screens with white backgrounds. The driver’s instrument cluster with EV display is visible in all lighting conditions with text and graphics that are an easy read.

The HD touch-screen navigation screen includes a split screen for the around-view camera system. The screen anchors at least a dozen categories with icons for connecting a phone, media, climate, and charging.

Clever Function

A “bridge” console extends from the base of the instrument panel and divides the front seats, with unique storage. The upper level has cup holders, a wireless charging pad, window lift switches, and door locks. An armrest box has useful storage and conceals two Type C USB ports, and there is an old-style USB-A next to the wireless charging pad.

Below the bridge is a long, open storage space with low sides for a purse or take-out food bags.

Without a space-robbing gearshift lever, the designers rethought what could be. Placing window and lock controls on the console is different, but I adapted quickly. Moving the switches from the traditional door panel allowed the designer to create a long, padded armrest with an integrated grab rail for closing the door. On opening, the grab rail — with a bead of ambient lighting — provides the ideal leverage point to control the door from punching the car next to it.

Hyundai gives owners a 3-month trial for the Wi-Fi hotspot, followed by a $20 per month Verizon data plan. Or the owner can add the Ioniq 6 to their phone plan.

Mercifully, the digital infotainment touchscreen has various buttons and switches for such oft-used features as volume, tuning, fan speed, and temp control.

All controls were intuitive for me to quickly figure out and use — a degree in IT is not required. Also smartly designed is the steering-column mounted, shift-by-wire gear selector. The sturdy stalk is clearly marked D-N-R, with a Park button at the end. Turning the tab-end of the stalk was never confusing to select D or R.

Ioniq 6 AWD Ride and Handling

Underpinned by a seemingly unsophisticated steel suspension, there is outstanding control from the front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link. The setup provides capable finesse in enthusiastic driving, but the main asset is how the suspension absorbs the jarring roughness of crappy road surfaces and potholes. The ride is luxurious without a complex air ride system or electronic control.

On the Interstate with cruise set and Hyundai Drive Assist engaged, the Ioniq 6 settles in and tracks like a streamliner. The ride quality is consistently unruffled over California’s cantankerous concrete highways, but the ride is carpet smooth on blacktop.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is among the aerodynamic slipperiest cars on sale today. Models with 18-inch wheels have a drag coefficient of 0.20, while 20-inch models rise to 0.27 (matching the 2023 Toyota Prius). Other aerodynamically sleek cars include the Mercedes-Benz EQS and Mercedes-Benz EQE (0.20), Lucid Air (0.21cd), and Porsche Taycan (0.22 cd).

Driver Assist Technologies

The Ioniq 6 has all the expected safety features, including six air bags and a full spectrum of advanced technologies, including Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist 2.

This evolved system is reliably accurate for Level 2 semi-autonomous driving. When engaged, the lane-centering function is spot-on and keeps the car from drifting wide across the white lines or Botts dots. However, some stretches of light-colored Interstate highway can play tricks on the cameras, causing brief slowdowns.

The evolved technologies now allow Lane Change Assistance. It can be activated when the turn signal is held for a left or right move and the driver has hands on the steering wheel. In my experience, the response was too slow, and I intervened to make the lane change. This function is just one more layer of technology toward fully autonomous driving.

More relevant in the evolved HDA is how it now can respond to low-speed cut-ins of other vehicles or motorcyclists. The system also will adjust the car’s position in the lane if another vehicle in the adjacent lane moves too close.

Also evolved is the Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning. This electronic “intelligence” mimics the driver’s acceleration style and spacing with the vehicle ahead. I’m too much of an actual driver to give up this type of control.

Other advanced driving-assist technologies include:

  • Blind-spot collision-avoidance assist and Blind-Spot View Monitor;
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist;
  • Parking Distance Warning, reverse and forward;
  • Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist (reverse, forward, side);
  • Remote Smart Parking Assist 2;
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Car/Ped/Cyclist Detection and Junction Turning;
  • Lane Keeping and Lane Following Assist;
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist.

Back Seat and Cargo Space

The Ioniq 6 is too nice to use as a ride-share sedan, but what a lovely back seat it has.

A comfortable stretch of back legroom seems longer than its specification of 34.7 inches. Headroom is adult accommodating for all but the very tall, somewhat cropped by the trailing arc of the roofline.

A completely flat floor provides exceptional three-across footroom. The bench seat has good thigh support and a relaxed seatback angle. The door panel has a bottle slot and a uniquely integrated niche as a small catchall for gum wrappers and other bits. The door also has the armrest rail for easy closing.

Other occupant amenities include a fold-down center armrest with dual can holders, two USB-C ports, center air vents with left and right flow, and grab handles above each door with a jacket hook on the driver side.

Trunk space is wide and low, looking more spacious than its 11.2 cubic feet. But fold the 60/40 seatback for up to six feet in ladder or ski length. A power trunk closer is a bonus for the Ioniq 6 Limited.

Why Buy the Hyundai Ioniq 6?

For those who have said good riddance to a modern midsize sedan, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 could be a mind-changer, not just a game-changer.

The average price of a new midsize sedan is around $32,000, which compares to $48,000 for a midsize SUV, according to MoneyGeek.

Spending a little more upfront for the Ioniq 6 — charging at home is a lot cheaper than buying gasoline — buys a no-compromises family car, with the added incentive of it being a power source for emergency support or pleasurable activities.
